Chapter VI
"I know you're in here," said that familiar, deep I couldn't seem to get away from.
I rose up from behind the desk I was hiding behind to find him standing a few feet away eying me, quietly.
"Are you following me?" I asked, suspiciously.
Releasing a hearty laugh, he walked towards me slowly, unsure of how to approach me. After weighing my options in my head I decided there was no use in running away and stood my ground waiting for him to approach me.
"I go on runs sometimes to clear my head. How about you?"
"Same as you, minus the running," I answered vaguely.
"Are you going to tell me your name or run away again?" he replied with a serious gaze on his face.
"Saron."
"Why did you run away from me in the Cafeteria?" he asked, hurt in his eyes.
"I- I was hungry. I don't like to talk when I'm hungry." I was hungry? Really? I couldn't come up with a better excuse. What was it about him that made me so hot and flustered?
Clearing my throat, I changed the subject by asking, "What's your name?"
"Zion."
"and what kind of hybrid are you?"
"How do you know I'm a hybrid?" he asked, narrowing his eyes at me as he stepped forward.
Shit. What do I do now?!
I backed away, averting my gaze to the ground to avoid his fierce gaze as I thought up an excuse.
"I didn't see you with any of the other groups so I assumed. Star, my friend told me about the hybrids," I answered quickly.
"You know, you're a horrible liar."
My eyes shot up and I glared angrily at him before replying, "You don't know me."
"I know you're lying to your friend."
My eyes widened in shock, rendered speechless by his words. What did he mean? He couldn't possibly know. How could he? Stay cool, Saron. He's bluffing, that's what boys do.
"I don't know what you're talking about," I replied calmly, maintaining his gaze before walking past him to return back.
As I passed him, he grabbed my wrist stopping me in my tracks causing me to stumble. He instinctively placed his hand on my lower back steadying me. I suddenly felt myself being whooshed into a distant memory.
"Father!" cried out a young boy, giggling happily as he began waddling towards his father who had just entered the house.
"Zion, my boy!" an older gentleman with brown hair and thick rimmed glasses exclaimed while bending down to scoop up the excited toddler.
"Careful Jacob, you'll drop him," rang out a voice from an older woman seated on a nearby couch knitting.
"Mommy, mommy daddy's home!" Zion cooed cupping his fathers face in his hands lovingly.
"JACOB!" the woman screamed in terror.
The child was suddenly dropped to the ground as the elder man collapsed beside him, a pool of blood forming around him. A hooded figure emerged from behind him with the man's heart clenched between his fingers. He dropped the heart on the ground and stepped towards the woman ignoring the cries of the child screaming. The woman backed away, frightened, eying the door. Taking a bold leap forward towards the exit, she also fell to the ground as the man removed her heart from her chest with one fell swoop. The bodies of the man and the woman lay on the ground lifeless in mere seconds with their hearts detached near them as the child cried and screamed for them. The hooded man grabbed the child with one hand and walked out of the house, the child struggling in his grasp, face wet from tears.
"Saron? Wake up, Saron!"
I woke up to find myself on the ground Zion frowning down at me in concern as my head laid in his lap. I felt tears rolling down my cheek, remembering what I had just seen.
"Saron? What did you see? What's wrong?" he asked frantically, wiping the tears from my face.
I sat up, wiping the tears from my face and stood. I gave him a sad smile sniffling as I brushed myself off.
"It was nothing Zion," I assured him. My heart felt heavy and ached for him. He had watched his parents murdered before him as a child and had been taken away by their killer. I can only imagine the pain he has endured and I only got one memory. I longed to take some of his pain and torment away. He hid it so well but every so often I saw it resurface.
"I'm getting tired. I'm going to head back to my wing," I quickly said without giving him a chance to object and press me for more details.
I walked away quickly without looking back, following the white signs, arriving back within minutes. I walked in to find students awake, many in the Common chatting away and laughing amongst one another. I walked quickly back to my section to see if Star had awoken. As soon as I walked in I spotted Star perched atop my bed eying me suspiciously. She must have been waiting for my return. How long had I even been gone?
"And where have you been?"
"I couldn't sleep so I took a walk."
"You went alone! Why didn't you wake me?"
"You looked so peaceful sleeping! I didn't want to wake you."
Satisfied with my answer she hopped off my bed, pulling me out of the room with her.
"Where are we going?"
"To eat duhh or did you eat without me too?" My stomach growled in response, to her delight.
We took our time walking to the cafeteria taking in the view of the Academy. As we neared the Cafeteria I heard loud snickering coming from behind us. I stopped, turning around to see where the sound had come from. To my disgust, Thing 1 and Thing 2 were huddled not too far away at a table with some other witches eying us giggling.
"Who's that?" asked Star, following my gaze to the table of witches figuratively and literally.
"The two glaring at us are my sisters," I explained not breaking eye contact with the table.
"Hey Star, wanna have some fun?" I asked grinning at her.
"Do you even have to ask?" replied Star with the same twinkle of mischief in her eye.
I pulled her into the cafeteria with me and walked straight to the table with the blood bags, grabbing one as I headed towards the human food.
"Saron what are you do-"
"Trust me Star."
I grabbed two omelettes from the tray heading to a nearby table and sitting down with Star settling down across from me. I tore open the blood bag with my teeth as Star watched in fascination. I poked a hole in each omelette, pouring the blood in. Star's mouth dropped open in realization as it dawned on her what I was about to do.
"You are evil," she said, staring at me in awe.
"Why, thank you!" I replied, flipping my hair dramatically.
Satisfied with my work, I got up with the two omelets on the platter ready to bring them to my lovely sisters. Star followed me out of the Cafeteria, giggling unable to contain her excitement.
"We have to act cool so they don't suspect anything," I instructed her as we walked towards the table where they were seated. She nodded in agreement, settling down to a steady pace.
"Well, well, well, look who it is Bea," Amy remarked, looking at Bea.
Eying my plate in delight, Bea replied, "How nice of you to do our bidding without being asked Saron. There might even be a place for you here yet."
"Girls, this is Saron the pathetic girl who lived in our house because no one wanted her that we told you about.'' Amy introduced me to the rest of her flock of mean girls.
To their surprise I smiled back, warmly which earned a few more snickers. This was the first time I would get revenge and I wasn't going to ruin it by reacting prematurely. I could sense Star getting agitated beside me and I reached out, squeezing her hand reminding her of our mission.
"Oh look she found a friend," Amy said smiling at Star sympathetically.
"Word of advice. Stay away from her. She's beneath you," Bea said to Star.
"I saw omelettes in the kitchen and brought some because I know you and Amy love them," I blurted out, scared Star was going to cause a scene, ruining our plan. I could see from her face her anger was building up inside of her and from her clenched fists I knew it was just a matter of time before she blew up.
"I had one earlier! They're so good!!" Star added.
Bea smiled at Star before picking up her omelette to take a bite. As if on cue, Amy picked up her omelette as well not hesitating to bite into it. Bea also did the same.
I pulled Star away, determined to make myself scarce before things blew up.
"But their faces are the best part of this!"Star objected.
"We won't miss it but trust me, you do not want to be around when two drama queens throw a fit," I assured her.
I ducked behind a nearby plant, as I started to hear gagging. I pulled Star down beside me to conceal her from their view. I peeked out from behind the plant to find Amy downing a bottle of water trying to wash the taste of the blood from her mouth. I stifled a laugh as I watched in amusement.
"Look at Bea!" Star said, pointing excitedly at Bea. I shifted my gaze to see Bea on her knees spitting wads of blood repeatedly on the ground in a frenzy. The students nearby them were all cackling at the sight.
"Where is that bitch???!!!!!!!!" Amy screamed, scanning her eyes through the room searching for me. I ducked further behind the plant grabbing Star closer to me to hide us completely.
"I'm going to kill her!" yelled Bea.
I covered my mouth to keep myself from bursting out laughing and looked over to Star to see her doing the same. After a few minutes, the chatter died down and I slowly peeked out to find Amy and Bea were gone and so were their clique of witches.
"We're safe," I told Star as I got up.
"That. Was. AWESOME!" Star squealed, jumping in excitement.
"Come on, it's our turn to eat," I said beaming in delight. We walked in and grabbed a platter piling on as much food as possible before heading towards a table.
"Hey."
I turned around to find Tom standing behind me with a smirk on his face.
"Hey!" I greeted him excitedly, still pumped up from pranking Amy and Bea.
Star cleared her throat, reminding me of her standing beside me.
"Sorry Star, this is Tom. I met him yesterday in our wing. He's a third year."
"Hey Star. Are you a first too?"
"Yeah!" she answered, fluttering her eyelashes at him.
"Hey, why don't you guys come sit with us?" he asked, gesturing to a table with two other boys and another girl. They waved welcomingly in response.
"I don't kno-," I started to reply.
"Sure, we'd love to!" Star answered, interrupting me before I could finish my sentence. She looked at me in a way that said "are you crazy?" while threatening my life at the same time. I took the hint and followed Tom back to the table alongside her. Maybe it was a good thing to interact with other people in our wing. I could probably learn a lot from people in higher years.
Reaching the table, I put down the platter sitting across from Star and next to Tom. Star sat between Tom's two other friends leaving the girl sitting on my other side.
"Guys, this is Saron and Star. They're first years in our wing," Tom introduced us.
"I'm Gwen, second year," spoke up the girl. She had grey hair pulled back in a ponytail, dark black eyes and deep dimples that sunk deep into her cheeks as she smiled at us.
"Joel," said a freckled, tan boy with long-haired pulled up into a bun.
"David. Me and Joel are third years also, except I'm the most skilled," the brown haired boy with an athletic build boasted.
"Shut up!" replied Tom, playfully shoving him as he laughed.
I watched in interest as they chatted away, speaking up every so often while devouring the food before me. Star did the same, looking at me every so often to see if I was alright which I reassured her of with a smile.
