Chapter IV
"Star! I see you made a friend."
I turned around to discover the person behind the voice. A tall, slender brunette who seemed to be in her thirties shot me a welcoming smile as she walked towards us.
"I'm Anne, overseer of the White wing. And you must be Saron. I was told you'd be joining us. We're happy to have you. We have your things already and we'll bring them to whatever bed you choose."
"Saron, there's an empty bed beside me," Star piped up, tugging on my sleeve.
"Very well," said Anne laughing. "I'll alert the movers to move your things there and let Star show you around. I'll be here if either of you need me."
"Thank you so much!" I replied, happily. Everyone here was so nice. It was a breath of fresh air to be around people who didn't look at me like they hated me. I smiled as I felt myself being dragged away by Star.
"You're going to pull my arm off Star!"
"Sorry!!" peeped Star sheepishly, loosening her grip.
"Okay so here are the bathrooms. The boys section is on the other side." Star led me into a bathroom and began pointing at a section of the wing with rows of stalls in private sections. I sighed in relief as I noticed private showers lined along the opposite side.
"That's how I felt too. I couldn't imagine showering in a communal," Star agreed, gagging dramatically.
I rolled my eyes in amusement and followed her as she led me to a huge lobby with private study rooms with students crouched behind computers. There were students laid out on couches laughing and playing games. I ignored the eyes watching me and tried to pay attention to Star's voice introducing me to the wing.
"This is the Common. People study in the rooms and hang here during the day and after hours when people are sleeping."
"Where do we sleep?" I asked.
"That's next," replied Star, smiling from ear to ear.
We walked out of the Common, going deeper into the wing until we came across a set of rooms, each labeled alphabetically by letter.
"I'm sleeping in F. You'll be with me."
We walked past each letter until we came to our designated room. To my surprise, I walked in to find what must've been a hundred girls. Some were napping. Others were huddled whispering. Others were reading or on their phones. But all the chatter fell to silence once me and Star walked in.
Suddenly aware of the eyes upon us, Star came to a halt with me stopping right beside her. I eyed her nervously but was met with a shrug.
"She must be a new one," said a girl.
"Yeah I've never seen her before," another agreed.
"Hey, what's your name?" asked a blonde girl walking towards me.
"Saron."
"Welcome. I'm the leader of our section. As long as you keep your space clean and you're respectful to the girls we'll get along fine," she said, smiling at me coldly, sending shivers up my spine. I didn't believe her at all.
"I'll finish showing her around," Star said quickly, pulling me out of the room.
"Nice to meet you," I said, smiling fakely on my way out. I could already tell I didn't like her but no reason to start off on the wrong foot, right?
"Who was that??" I hissed at Star.
"Alice. She's the oldest so by default she became our leader but nobody actually likes her. She's terrifying so the less time we spend talking to her the better."
"I agree. I have no intention of spending any time with her. She gives me bad vibes," I said shivering in disgust.
"Me either. I'm starving, wanna go eat?"
My stomach rumbled at the mention of food. I had been so focused on getting accustomed at the academy I had forgotten I hadn't eaten in almost a day.
"That's the best thing I've heard all day."
"Let's go then," Star cooed, pulling me through the wing and out the door.
"Where are we going," I asked out of breath struggling to keep up. Star was actually a few inches shorter than me so it was a surprise to find myself unable to keep up with her fast pace.
"We have a cafeteria. They serve food for all supernatural creatures. Human food. Meat for werewolves. Blood for vampires. Human flesh for sirens. They have it all. The hybrids have more to choose from since they have more than one nature."
"Hybrids?? There are hybrids here?" I asked, perking up at the thought of others like me.
"Yeah. There are two types of hybrids here. Werewolf dragon hybrids and werewolf vampires."
"What about tribrids?" I asked, remembering what the Headmaster had told me about my father being a tribrid.
"There aren't any here. I've only heard stories dad told me about them."
"What did your dad tell you?" I asked, seeking for more.
"He told me of two. The first one was Daelon. He was the first known tribrid— a witch dragon fairy combination. He had more power than any creature but the power only made him greedy for more. He started using dark magic and it corrupted him, turning him evil. The magic he was using was so powerful, he became sick. He had a son for the sole purpose of taking over his body once he became too sickly to live in anymore. His son, Ben, died fighting his father to the death from continuing on his evil reign in his body. He's seen as a hero by supernaturals. The second one I've heard of is Edward. I don't know what powers he has, nobody does. Nobody knows anything about him. He keeps to himself. There might be more around but I haven't heard of any."
I shuddered at the thought of another person taking over my body. Was that why I was created? If so, why did Edward leave us? He left mother to die and me to be adopted by a family that didn't want me. Was power really that intoxicating? What would happen once I started using my magic? Would I be like Daelon? No. I could never let that happen. But, would I be able to stop it?
"Hey! Saron! Where'd you go?"
"Sorry," I blurted out, remembering I was with Star in the middle of the Academy on the way to the cafeteria.
"What's on your mind?" she asked with a concerned gaze.
"Oh, nothing. I'm just worried about starting classes."
"Me too, but since we're in the same wing we should have most of our classes together."
"Really?"
"Yeah they put us in normal classes but we should probably have our angel classes together since we're both first year angels."
Another conundrum. What about my other powers? How would I be able to take four different classes without being discovered as a hybrid? Even worse, how would I explain to Star about me taking werewolf, angel, vampire, and witch courses. I hope the Headmaster will visit me soon so I can get some answers.
"Hey, I thought you'd be excited," said Saron frowning after seeing the worried look on my face.
"I am! I'm just not in a rush to start classes," I answered honestly.
"I agree. Let's not talk about class. Let's talk about FOOD!" she exclaimed excitedly gesturing to the huge cafeteria in front of us.
"Finally."
It was a food heaven. Star wasn't kidding. There were trays and platters of all different types of food for each supernatural creature. My eyes lingered over to the blood bags scattered on a far table. I wonder how it'd feel to taste blood. Angels, however, were known to eat normal food so now wasn't the time to blow my cover. I walked over with Star to the human food I was accustomed to looking around at the multitude of students as she chatted away. Star wasn't kidding about the cliques. They were huddled in groups, most of them adhering to people from their wing with their powers. There were a few groups I saw with students from different wings, mainly fairies and witches. One table in particular caught my attention. There were two boys and two girls seated near the back of the cafeteria. I knew nothing about them and they showed no sign of their supernatural powers yet, I knew they were hybrids. It was as if every bone in my body was telling me to join them. I could feel myself being pulled in their direction.
"Saron! Where are you going? The food is here," said Star pulling me from the trance I didn't know I was in.
"Right."
I found my eyes lingering back over to that table. I contemplated walking over and introducing myself. But, what would I say? I couldn't reveal who I was. I forcibly pulled my eyes from the group but not before one of the boys caught my eye. He had messy, curly black hair and tan skin. He had dark, green eyes that pierced through me the moment he laid his eyes upon me.
Startled by the intensity of his gaze, I turned around focusing on Star even though my mind was elsewhere.
"Is this good?" asked Star looking up at me proudly with a platter filled with food.
"Yeah," I replied with not even a glance at her selections.
"Hey," said a deep, husky voice coming from behind me.
Oh no. I didn't even have to turn around to know it was him. Maybe if I pretended I didn't hear he'd go away?
"Saron!" screeched Star, whirling me around to face him.
I reluctantly looked up at him and he was even more beautiful up close. His green eyes had a hint of blue that I hadn't noticed before that sparkled like stars at night. His muscles were rippling through his shirt as he breathed. I've never seen anything so perfectly beautiful. His perfectly red, full lips curled up in a smile as he asked, "What's your name?"
"I can't talk right now," I said as I pulled Star away towards a table in the far corner of the room.
"Wait-," he called out.
"Hey! Saron! Are you crazy?! He was hot," Star wailed, pouting.
I ignored her objections and focused on putting as much distance as possible from me and him. I could smell trouble from the moment I put my eyes on him. I needed to stay as far away as possible from him and any other hybrid if I was to keep my identity hidden.
Once I felt satisfied with our distance, I stopped collapsing at a table with Star not too far behind me. I couldn't help but look back, to see him standing at the exact same spot where I left him staring at me. I saw a flash of pain in his eyes for the briefest of seconds. So brief I thought I had imagined it. In that moment, I felt his pain, his loneliness, his grief, all of it. I didn't even know his name yet I had just seen through his soul. Who was he? I scolded myself for even allowing myself to be curious. He was trouble and I was going to stay away.
"SARON WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU?!?!" Star screamed at me, causing the table next to us to pause their conversation to glare at us.
"Let's just eat Star."
