Chapter III

I stared at her in shock, unable to respond. I could feel myself shaking uncontrollably, my mind spinning trying to grasp what I just heard. It wasn't possible. I was not one supernatural creature but four. All my life, I had been helpless, relying on others when I had all this power in me. I, the only one left of my kind was drugged up in bed, never had a friend, never stood up for myself. The entire time, I had more power than anyone could imagine. It was exhilarating to think of but there was also a part of me that was terrified. What was I capable of? I had never experienced my own power outside of the incident when I was a child. How was I to control powers from four supernatural creatures?

"Saron, are you okay?" Sengal stepped forward with a concerned gaze.

"Yes," I replied, nodding my head violently, trying to refocus from my internal meltdown.

"If I may ask, how is it possible that your powers have not surfaced in all this time," spoke up Alan.

I frowned, realizing that what I feared was probably right. That is why I was drugged all these years. I was a monster. Only a monster would possess as much power as I did. What if I lost control? How much damage was I capable of? I shuddered at the thought. I shook my head dispelling the thought of me losing control.

"Maybe we should hold off on the questions and give her time to process. This is a lot to take in," offered the Headmaster, smiling at me.

"It's okay. I can tell you. Mrs. Gerbin gave me pills. She told me I was sick but now I know that I wasn't. The pills made me weak and kept me in bed. She was scared after what happened," I replied.

"After what happened?" Alan questioned me, narrowing his eyes.

"Where will I be assigned?" I avoided his question, not willing to get into my past.

I saw Alan open his mouth in the corner of my eye, quickly shushed to silence by the Headmaster before she redirected her attention towards me.

"Since there is no wing for Arogen, I will leave it up to you to choose between the four wings of the four powers you possess. The Red wing houses witches. The Blue wing houses werewolves. The White wing houses angels. And the purple wing houses vampires."

I silently weighed out my options. I shivered, remembering the hungry gazes of the vampires I saw when I entered the academy. I definitely wouldn't fit in Purple. I don't think I'd even be able to sleep at night with those red eyes in my peripheral. The Red Wing was where Amy and Bea were so that was out of the question. It was between White and Blue. I let my mind weigh both options, deciding between the two. I felt my gut pushing me to choose White.

"Your sisters are in the Red wing so maybe it would be easier for you to join them," offered John.

"I choose the White wing." I said, ignoring John's suggestion. There was no way I was going to be anywhere near Amy or Bea. If I was lucky, I'd never see them again.

"Very well," said the Headmaster, with an understanding smile.

I turned around, eager to leave but was quickly halted by the Headmaster's voice.

"Saron, wait. I have something for you."

I looked back at the headmaster. I watched her pull a stunning necklace out of her pocket. It was a thin, silver necklace of a stone with an angel carved into it.

I stared at her in shock. How did she know I'd choose an angel?

She gave me a knowing smile before taking a pocket knife out of her pocket and carefully poking her finger until a drop of blood emerged from the wound. She squeezed her finger onto the necklace letting the blood splash onto it.

"Locseru saerau beajin," she chanted as the necklace levitated drawing the blood inside it until it dissolved completely into the necklace.

I silently watched in amazement as the necklace fell back into her hand. She walked behind me, brushing my hair to the side as she placed the necklace around my neck and secured it.

"Saron, this is a protective enchantment that I sealed with my blood. If you ever need me or find yourself in danger, touch the necklace and invision me in your mind. It will summon me from wherever I am to you."

"Thank you Headmaster," I replied with a smile on my face, touched by her thoughtfulness.

"You can head to your new Wing now. Good luck Saron. Remember, you are not like the other students so be careful. Most importantly, do not let your emotions get the best of you. We will be checking in often to make sure you're settling in. If anything happens or your powers get out of control, come to any of us immediately," added Sengal.

I nodded before walking out the door. As I walked through the hallway back to the office I couldn't help but feel excited. I was able to leave the room and go where I wanted. I swore to myself I would never allow someone to take my freedom away from me ever again. I took a deep breath before pushing the office door open, to join the rest of the students.

In the time I had been stuck in the office, I had almost forgotten how huge the Academy was. I looked around and saw pathways separating off in different directions and the never ending staircase twisting and turning into oblivion. This place better have an elevator because I'll collapse before I ever make it up those stairs. There were so many kids scattered throughout the halls. Some were sitting on balconies. I even caught a few flying. My imagination ran wild at the possibilities of what I could do. Does my angel side come with wings? I looked to my left and saw white arrows pointing left. There were many arrows in different colors scattered about so I decided these must lead to the White wing.

I walked slowly, taking in the beauty of the academy while occasionally checking to see if I was going in the right direction. I spotted a glass sculpture of an angel piercing a centaur with an arrow. For something so violent, it was depicted so beautifully. The angel has wide wings with long slender feathers that extended outward in a perfect angle. The angel was beautiful. It was a tall, slender man with perfect features. A slender face coupled with a sharp jawline, piercing eyes, and perfect curls falling over his face. The centaur was merely a prop that seemed to enhance the beauty and divinity of the angel.

"Beautiful, isn't it?"

I jumped, unaware I was not alone and turned to find a girl that looked no older than me with striking grey eyes, tan skin, and long, flawless red hair bouncing down to her waist grinning at me.

"Yeah, it is," I agreed.

"I'm Star. You're new here, aren't you?"

"Is it that obvious?"

"Most of the kids tend to forget the beauties of this place once they get settled in."

"I don't think I'll ever get over how beautiful this place is," I said, gawking at the sculpture once again.

"What's your name?"

"Saron."

"Pretty name! Did you come alone?"

"Yes. I mean...technically no"

She cocked her head and shot me a questioning look.

"I came with my sisters. But we aren't close. Actually they're not my real sisters-," I attempted to explain.

She scoffed, giving me an understanding gaze "Family is useless. I'm not close to my sister either except she's actually my real sister."

I laughed, relieved to finally find someone who understood me.

"How long have you been here?" I asked.

"4 days."

"How do you like it so far?"

"I love the Academy. There's so much to do here. But, everyone has their little cliques."

"Cliques?"

She pointed over to the far end of the hall to a group of kids huddled together giggling infectiously with small, multicolored wings protruding from their backs. "Those are the fairies. They tend to stick together and are always laughing."

Next, she motioned towards the balcony where five grim faced students were staring us down with fire, red eyes. "Those are the vamps. They don't talk to anyone outside of their wing. I actually don't think I've seen them talk at all."

"There," she said pointing down a floor to a seating area with 4 girls dressed in dark colors speaking in unison in hushed whispers, "are the witches. They hang with the warlocks and seers."

"Most kids stay within their wings or with people who share powers similar to them," she explained further.

"What about you? Who do you stay with?" I was curious to see which group she belonged in.

She looked down, shuffling her feet nervously before replying, "I haven't been able to find friends here yet. Hopefully, when we start class next week, it'll get easier."

"Looks like we're in the same boat."

Her eyes lit up as she looked back at me with a smile erupting on her face.

"Where are you assigned?"

"White."

"NO WAY ME TOO!" she shrieked in excitement causing a group of kids to turn around and shoot us murderous looks. She paid them no mind, entangling her arm in mine pulling me away from the sculpture and we began following the white arrows together. Things were finally looking up. Maybe making friends wouldn't be so hard after all.

"So you're an angel, like me?"

I opened my mouth to tell her she was partly right when I remembered what the Headmaster had told me. I wasn't to tell anyone, not even Star, who seemed like the most trustworthy person in the world.

"Yeah," I nervously replied.

Sensing my hesitation, Star narrowed her eyes at me in confusion.

"I just found out I was an angel. This is all still new to me," I said, redeeming myself.

"Really?" She asked, wide eyed in disbelief. "Your parents never told you?"

"My mom is dead. My father, well, I don't know about him. My adoptive mother never told me what I was."

"What about your sisters? What are they?" She asked, shooting me a sympathetic look.

"Witches, which is fitting," I snorted.

She giggled infectiously causing me to laugh along with her until my stomach was crying out for me to stop.

"We're close," she huffed out of breath, after regaining composure.

"Finally. My legs are killing me. Do they have an elevator here?"

"No they don't. That's the one thing they don't have," she replied, frowning.

A couple feet ahead, I saw the entrance to the wing. It was impossible to miss with angels carved above the door and a white door frame that must've been 20ft tall. Strangely, there was no door handle.

I looked to Star for clarification but found her looking at me with a grin that said she already knew what was on my mind.

"Just wait for it," she giggled, unable to contain her excitement.

We got to the front of the door and to my surprise, she continued to tread forward straight into the door.

"Star watch ou-," I started to warn her when to my disbelief, she disappeared before my eyes through the door. I stared at the door in confusion, swinging my head left and right to see if anyone else saw where she had gone.

"You coming?" She asked, dunking her head back through the door as if it was thin air.

"How are you-," I stuttered, unable to process what I was seeing.

"Just walk through and you'll see."

I gulped before carefully stepping into the door. My leg went straight through and I was standing on the other side looking in an enormous white room with the words, WHITE WING, hanging from the ceiling. I whirled to my side where Star was standing beside me, waiting for me to speak.

"Ho-How did we just do that??"

"Only angels can get through that door. For every supernatural creature, the doors are made of elements that only creatures of that kind can walk through. It's a security thing but also to make sure you're where you belong. Now you know you belong here," she replied beaming.
