Chapter 1
Hey guys, so, as I said this is the new rewritten version of Armageddon I didn't like how I was writing it before so I deleted it to get a fresh start. This chapter changed quite a bit from the original which no longer exists.
Also, please comment. I love chatting with all of you wonderful readers.
Anyway, I hope you enjoy!
David's POV
I had picked up my five year old son, Ethan, and his best friend, Sophia, who's parents had asked me to pick her up because they were both slammed at work, from school and we were driving home when my phone rang. We were at a red light so I picked it up. And when I saw who was calling I immediately knew that something was wrong. It was my wife's doctor. I answered and put the phone to my ear.
"Hello Dr. Stotts." I said.
"Dr. Wilson. I'm so sorry. Your wife just passed away." Said Dr. Stotts.
It was silent for several seconds before I spoke again.
"W-what happened? You t-told me she had a g-good chance of m-making it through." I said quietly so Ethan and Sophia wouldn't hear.
"I know. And she should have, but we found another tumor forming when we checked on everything this morning. The cancer had moved to her brain. We wanted to call you and ask what you wanted us to do, but Sarah said not to bother you, and to go ahead and do the surgery to remove it. She didn't make it through the surgery. I am so, so sorry." Dr. Stotts responded.
"Dad! The light is green! The car behind us is honking!" Shouted Ethan.
I drove through the light and into a Target parking lot. I saw Ethan's green eyes and Sophia's blue eyes looking at me in the mirror.
"Dad... why are we at Target?" He asked as he pushed some of his brown hair out of his face.
I didn't answer him, instead I put my head on the steering wheel and then spoke to Dr. Stotts again.
"I-I'm on my w-way there now." I said, then hung up the phone.
"Mr. Wilson, is something wrong?" Asked Sophia as I pulled out of the parking lot at started towards the hospital.
"Yes..." was all I could say without breaking down into tears.
She shouldn't have died... this is all so wrong... she was going to make it through, all the doctors thought she would... they practically assured us that she would survive.
"D-Dad... what's wrong?" Asked Ethan.
How am I gonna tell my son that his mom just died? He knows she was sick... but he didn't know how bad... I had promised him that the doctors would help her. I can't lie to him. That would just hurt him more.
"Ethan... y-your mom j-just... passed away." I said quietly.
"W-what... but y-you said the doctors w-would h-help her." He said as tears started falling down his face, Sophia grabbed his hand and pulled him into a hug.
"I k-know... but s-suddenly her c-condition got w-worse. The d-doctors c-couldn't do anything." I said.
Ethan cried onto Sophia's shoulder the entire way to the hospital. When we got there we parked and walked in. The receptionist recognized us and looked at me sadly.
"I'm sorry for your loss. Go on up, I'll sign you in." She said.
I nodded my thanks and the three of us went to the elevator. A few minutes later we were on the ninth floor and walked down to the room that we had visited several times since Sarah had been diagnosed. When we got there Dr. Stotts was standing outside of the room.
"C-can we go in?" I asked him.
"Yes. Go on in." He said.
I opened the door and walked in. There she was on a hospital bed, her eyes closed and her head bald from the chemo she had gone through. I could see where the doctors had glued her skin back together after the failed surgery.
I thought back to when we first found out she had cancer.
Flashback, five months earlier.
She had gone to a normal checkup and was told that she may have a really bad cancer. She had walked into the house in tears and told me the news. I immediately thought that I would have too find a cure for cancer before it was to late.
"Sarah, I'll discover a cure soon, I was already working on it before this happened." I cried while we were in bed that night.
"David, as great of a scientist you are, even you won't be able to do this in time, they said I only have about five months left to live. I think we should spend some of that time as a family instead of trying to find a cure. The doctors will do everything they can. So, please I'm begging you to just spend some time with Ethan and I before we can't do that anymore." Replied Sarah in a calm whisper.
"But I can't let you die, Ethan needs you, I need you. I know I can do this I just need more time." I croaked.
"Which is something we don't have David." Said Sarah in a reasonable tone.
"But..." I started to say, but she stopped me.
"David, there is nothing you or anyone else, other than my doctors, can do, stop being stubborn!" Screamed Sarah, all show of calm or reason gone. "Don't you realize I'm terrified? And this fight isn't helping me at all." Sarah plead.
"Ok, you're right, there is nothing that can be done to change what's happened. I also don't have any clue how terrified you are right now, I just wanted to try, but if you ask me not to try to find a cure I won't. I promise." I said.
It was silent for a few minutes before Sarah broke the silence.
"Maybe we could go camping, Ethan has a long weekend so we can stay at the camp site for a few days. That's something we all enjoy." She said.
"Ok honey, we'll leave tomorrow morning." I said, then kissed her and we both fell asleep.
We woke up early so that we would be able to go on our camping trip with Ethan. When we woke up we got everything ready and got Ethan up and got in the car, the trip to our favorite spot would take a couple hours so we wanted to leave early.
Third Person POV
When the family arrived at the camp site, a beautiful place by a small lake in a clearing in the forest, David began collecting firewood while Sarah and Ethan set up the large tent and a fire pit. When everything was ready Sarah decided that they should go fishing for a while, all three of them grabbed their rods and walked down to the lake.
"Ethan can you carry my rod?" Asked David. "I just realized we left the bait back at the tent." Said David.
"Sure dad." Replied Ethan as he took his dads fishing rod.
When Ethan and Sarah got to the edge of the lake they found a nice spot to spend a few hours fishing, there were some large, mostly flat rocks right on the edge of the water, some tall trees provided shade and there was a slight breeze. They sat down on the rocks and waited for David to get back with the bait.
"Mommy, why were you and dad yelling at each other last night?" Asked Ethan. "I couldn't tell what you were saying but it sounded like something was wrong."
"Oh, don't worry Ethan, I was just ranting about work and got a little overexcited about it. Your dad and I always talk about work before we go to sleep." Answered Sarah, she felt awful about lying to her son, but she didn't want to ruin what would likely be the last trip she ever got to go on with him.
"Oh, ok." Said Ethan.
David walked down the path and saw them sitting in the rocks, he went over to them and sat down.
"Ok, who's gonna catch us our dinner for tonight?" He asked as he sat.
"Me! I'm gonna catch it! But I'll let you deal with getting it ready... I don't want to cut out all its bones and stuff." Said Ethan happily.
"Ok, it's a competition then, because I think it'll be me who catches dinner." Said Sarah. "But I agree, we'll have your dad deal with the bones and stuff. That's the disgusting work!"
They fished for about an hour and caught several small catfish. But Ethan caught the biggest one.
"I win!" Shouted Ethan.
"Yeah, I guess you did." Said Sarah with fake sadness.
"Don't be sad mommy. Maybe you'll win tomorrow." Said Ethan.
"There's no maybe about it. I'm definitely going to win tomorrow." Said Sarah.
End of flashback.
Wow. I think that is the most emotional chapter I've ever written for any of my books. I cried the entire time I wrote this. I hope you enjoyed, and as awful as it may sound, I hope I made some of you cry.
Now, question time:
Do you want me to do a Meet The Characters chapter so that you can get some extra info about some of the characters?
If so, do you want me to do it in a separate chapter or just in an authors note at the end of one of another chapter?
THANKS FOR READING!
