Epilogue: Return Home

(Erebor) Ariana's POV

Bilbo and I were there when the funeral first started for Thorin and his nephews. But we grieve differently in the Shire. So we decided to slip away and head home. First I had a deliver something to Thranduil's camp site, his wife's necklace. Gandalf is waiting for Bilbo and I with two horses. Bilbo will be riding with me on the horse we had used to get to Raven hill.

"Could you tell the others we say goodbye?" Bilbo asks Balin. He had seen us our.

"Tell them yourself" he tells him. I turn and see what is left of our company. I smile and hug them all.

"If you ever pass through Bag End, tea is at four. You are welcome ANY time. Don't bother knocking" Bilbo tells them.

"It's been an honour traveling with you all and we'll never forget you" I tell them.

"You both are welcome here anytime" Dwalin tells us. We nod our heads and say our final good byes. Bilbo, Gandalf and I leave Erebor heading to the elf camp in the ruined city of Dale. Bilbo sneaked in and left the necklace for me. Along with the quick letter I had written on the way from Erebor. The three of us then set off for the Shire before we're spotted by the elf guards on duty.

(Ruined City of Dale: Elf camp) Third Person's POV

Thranduil expected to have a squad escort Ariana and her brother back to the Shire. But they had already left. He found another letter in his tent with a box. He sits on the bed and opens the box. He gasps and gently touches the necklace that had been made for his late wife. He opens the letter and recognizes Ariana's hand writing from her previous letter.

Dear Thranduil,

I am sorry for leaving without saying goodbye again. But with the recent death of our friends. Bilbo and I just wanted to sneak away. And go home without drawing attention to ourselves. Didn't go quiet according the plan, the rest of our company spotted us and gave us a formal goodbye before we left with Gandalf.

I wanted to let you know I am safe and return your necklace to you. I know we didn't part on the best of terms when I went to save my friends with my brother. But I hope we can still be friends. As I know elves only love once and you loved your wife. So can never love another and I won't be someones second choice.

Take care of that son of yours. Remember what I told you about your late wife, the necklace and your son. You elves may live many years, but you only have one son. Cherish him and never take him for granted.

Your friend,

Ariana Baggins of the Shire

Thranduil sighs, she wasn't his second choice. His late wife was chosen for him and he cared for her dearly. But she was never his one, Ariana is. He vows to prove himself to her as Legolas appears. He places the letter down, first he needs to talk to his son. It's long over due.

(Shire: Bag End) Ariana's POV

Needless to say, Bilbo and I were shocked when we arrived home to see our things been auctioned away. Everyone thought we were dead. "Stop! Stop! There's been a mistake!" Bilbo and I shout.

"Who are you two?" Lobelia asks us.

"You know who we are, Lobelia Sackville-Baggins" Bilbo snaps.

"This is our home and those are our spoons!" I retort taking them from her. "Thank you very much" I snap. The auctioner calls for our attention.

"Excuse me. It's been more, than 13 months since the disappearance. If you are in fact Ariana and Bilbo Baggins. And are both undeceased can you both prove it?" he asks us.

"What?" Bilbo asks him.

"Something official with your name on it would suffice" the auctioneer states.

"Show him the contract Bilbo" I tell him. "The rest of you can start putting our things back then go get the rest of our things back and repay those who brought them" I order. As Bilbo takes out the contract giving it to the auctioneer.

"A contract of employment as a bur. Never mind as what. There. Our signatures" Bilbo says pointing to our signatures at the bottom. The auctioneer examines our signatures.

"Yes, well... Uh... Well, it certainly seems to be in order. Yes. Seems there can be no doubt" he declares. The crowd starts to leave.

"Thank you, now kindly contact all the buyers and see that our things are returned as soon as possible" I tell him.

"Of course Miss Baggins" he says. "Who is this you pledged your service to? Thorin Oakenshield?" he asks Bilbo and I. As we head to go inside.

"He was a friend" Bilbo answers and we go inside to see the house is empty. "What a mess" he grumbles.

"Don't worry, we'll get everything back and put everything back where it belongs" I assure him. "Who about I make us some tea with our left over rations?" I suggest. He agrees and goes to put his things in his room. There's a knock at the door. I answer it to see Drogo Baggins with Primula Brandybuck. "How can I help you both?" I ask them.

"We thought you could use some help cousin" Drogo states.

"Don't worry we didn't buy anything in the auction" Primula adds.

"Help would be great, I was about to make dinner. Care to join us?" I ask them. They agree and I let them in. "I'm sorry about the house, we didn't expect to be gone so long and presumed dead. And have our things auctioned off" I tell them. As Bilbo appears. "Bilbo, Drogo and Primula offered their help. I invited them to dinner as thank you" I state.

"Thank you, your help will be most appreciated" Bilbo tells them. "Drogo, how about we go start bringing in the furniture that hasn't been sold?" he suggests. Drogo agrees and they go get started. They are soon joined by Hamfast Gamgee, his wife Bell, and the auctioneer. Us girls made dinner while the men worked, the auctioneer assured Bilbo and I we'd have all our things back by this time next month. Dinner was lovely and I let Bilbo sleep in my bed as his had been auctioned off. While I slept on a pile of blankets and pillows by the fire. I pray we got our things back quickly.
