Chapter 23

Newt, Tina, and a No-Maj they had accidentally got acquainted with some time earlier that day named Jacob Kowalski. A bite mark was seen on the man's neck as he had looked ill and they had to help him tiptoe up the stairs to Tina's apartment building.

"That you, Tina?" The landlady, Mrs. Esposito, called out that made the group freeze in their steps.

     "Yes, Mrs. Esposito!" Tina responded.

     "Are you alone?"

"I'm always alone, Mrs. Esposito!" Tina sighed with a shake of her head while she and Newt continued to help Jacob up the steps. They enter the apartment and the living space was almost alive by workaday magic. An iron was working away on its own in a corner, and a clothes horse revolved clumsily on its wooden legs in front of the lit fireplace, drying an assortment of underwear. Magazines were scattered around: The Witch's Friend, Witch Chat, and Transfiguration Today. Queenie stood wearing her silk slip and watching the mending of a dress on a dressmaker's dummy. Jacob stares at her in awe at how beautiful the blond was while Newt had barely noticed her at all as he was getting impatient to leave as soon as possible. He looked out the windows as Queenie looks over at them with a slightly surprised expression.

"Teenie-- you brought men home?" She said softly as Tina cleared her throat.

"Gentlemen, this is my sister. You want to put something on, Queenie?" The older sister asked as the youngest looked at her obliviously at first before nodding.

"Oh, sure-" She says, unconcerned while she ran her wand up the dummy and the dress magically ran up her body. Jacob watched with a dumbfounded expression on his face at the display as Tina started to tidy up the apartment a bit, slightly frustrated. "So, who are they?" Queenie asked.

"That's Mr. Scamander. He's committed a serious infraction of the National Statute of Secrecy-"

"He's a criminal?" Queenie asked in an impressed manner.

     "--uh-huh, and this is Mr. Kowalski, he's a No-Maj--"

"A No-Maj?" Queenie gasped, suddenly worried, "Teen-- what are you up to?"

"He's sick-" Tina sighed heavily, "it's a long story-- Mr. Scamander has lost something, I'm going to help him find it." She explained as Jacob suddenly staggers, very sweaty and ill. Queenie hurried over to him as Tine hovered, also worried.

"You need to sit down, honey." Queenie claimed as Jacob slumped back onto the sofa, "Hey-" She reads his mind, "-he hasn't eaten all day. And-" She pauses as she reads his mind some more, "-aw, that's rough," she reads his mind again, "-he didn't get the money he wanted for his bakery. You bake, honey? I love to cook." Queenie beamed with a smile, Newt watched her with clear interest as his scientific attention was now caught.

"You're a Legilimens?" He asked as the blond looked up at him with a nod.

"Uh-huh, yeah. But I always have trouble with your kind. Brits. It's the accent." She said softly as Jacob let this information sink in.

"You know how to read minds?" He asked as she looked back at him.

"Aw, don't worry, honey. Most guys think what you was thinking, first time they see me." She said with a coy smile on her pink lips as she playfully gestured at Jacob with her wand, "Now, you need food."  Newt looked out the window to see a Billywig fly pass and his patience was wearing thin as he wanted to get out and find his creatures. While Tina and Queenie busied themselves in the kitchen, footsteps are heard in the hall outside and the door of the apartment magically swung open suddenly, making everyone jump in surprise and panic set in the witches and wizard.

(Y/n) walks in with a huff, her dark grey overcoat buttoned up as her face was nuzzled into the black scarf wrapped around her neck, obviously cold, "Hey." She greeted.

"(Y/n)! Wh-What brings you here?" Tina asked as she and Queenie quickly stand in front of Jacob in attempt to hide him before she noticed. (Y/n) sees Newt, who smiles nervously at her while shifting from foot to foot, and arches her brow while taking off her coat and scarf.

"Didn't I say we were gonna talk earlier back at work? Well I'm here for that and Queenie was gonna help me with some things for my wedding." (Y/n) stated as a matter of fact, her back turned to them as Jacob peeked out from behind the two women in curiosity and then awe as he watched her use her wand less magic to close the door and hang up her coat and scarf. "Also, who're you two hiding from me?" She asked without even looking at them, Tina sighed at how sharp her observation skills were.

"No one..." Tina attempted to lie in a murmur as (Y/n) looked at her with a brow arched.

"Let me guess, it's someone you don't want me to see because this person is highly restricted to come into any contact with, such as a No-Maj for example?" She asked with a brow arched and arms crossed over her chest. The sisters looked at her in slight shock as Newt looked at her, clearly impressed.

"I swear to Merlin you have some kind of sixth sense. Are you sure you're not a Legilimens?" Queenie said before she squeaked in surprise when (Y/n) rolled her eyes and used her magic to gently push Tina and Queenie out of the way of her line of sight at Jacob, who started to feel somewhat intimidated by the young woman skeptical gaze on him.

"State your name, No-Maj." She said as Jacob gulped nervously.

"U-Uh Jacob. Jacob Kowalski." He said as the Auror nodded and looked at Tina and Newt.

"Is he sick?" She asked as the two nod and she nodded, "I see..." (Y/n) took out her wand and pointed at Jacob, making the sisters jump and stand in front of Jacob.

"(Y/n)! Please don't do this! I know this is extremely against the rules but we got to help him because he's sick and we're still trying to figure out how to make him feel better! Please don't tell MACUSA or-" Tina blurted out and babbled quickly before it goes silent with a swish of (Y/n)'s finger, her voice gone.

"Woah, Tina. Calm down, I'm just helping him a bit." She said as she flicked her wand at Jacob and he feels his body temperature go down and become a bit cooler, "It looks like he broke out in a fever or something and he's sweating like crazy. Listen, I'm not gonna snitch on you. You two are my maid of honor and bridesmaid for Merlin's sake, you think I'll rat you out like that? I mean, whatever mess you guys got yourselves into is probably stupid but I'll help in any way I can." She said as the sisters breathed a sigh of relief.

"Oh. Thank you, (Y/n)." Tina thanked while hugging her, (Y/n) smiled as she hugged back.

Queenie hugged them as well with a beaming smile, "So, do you wanna stay for dinner, sweets?" She asked the Auror sweetly as (y/n) laughed softly and nodded. The three pulled away and started to head back to the small kitchen.

"Of course. And all of you have some explaining to do." She said with playful seriousness while ingredients came floating out of cupboards as Queenie enchanted them into components of a meal-- carrots and apples chop themselves, pastry rolls itself, and pans stir.

"Hot dog... Again?" Queenie asked as Tina frowned.

     "Don't read my mind!"

"Not a very wholesome lunch." Queenie stated as (Y/n) snickered. The Auror snapped her fingers and music starts to play on the gramophone, Marion Harris began to sing faintly in the background as (Y/n) then used her wandless magic to dim the lighting a bit in the apartment and set the cloth napkins on the table before the fold themselves into boats. Tina pointed her wand at the cupboards. Dishes, assorted cutlery, and glasses came flying out, setting themselves on the table next to the napkin boats with a little prodding from Tina's wand. Jacob was half-fascinated and half-terrified as he watched the women work with magic effortlessly and staggered to the table. Newt had put his hand on the doorknob of the door, "Hey, Mr. Scamander, you prefer pie or strudel?" Queenie asked suddenly without looking at him, making Newt freeze as everyone looked at him. He felt a sudden wave of embarrassment as he removed his hand from the doorknob.

"I really don't have a preference." Newt sheepishly said as Tina stared at him with disappointment and hurt. Jacob had already sat himself down while tucking his napkin into his shirt.

Queenie reads the man's mind and smiles, "You prefer strudel, huh, honey? Strudel it is." Jacob nods excitedly and enthusiastically as Queenie grins back with delight. With a flick of her wand, Queenie sent raisins, apples, and pastry flying into the air. The concoction neatly wrapped itself up into a cylindrical pie, baked on the spot, completed with ornate decoration and a dusting of sugar. Jacob took a deep breath in and let out a content hum at the heavenly smell. Tina lit the candles on the table and (Y/n) filled the glasses with cold water, dinner was ready. A small squeak is heard from Newt's pocket as a Bowtruckle named Pickett poked his green head out in curiosity. Tina looked at Newt as everyone sat down but him.

"Well, sit down, Mr. Scamander, we're not going to poison you." She said.

"We don't bite." (Y/n) hummed with a playful smile, "Hard." She added jokingly. Newt stayed hovered by the door but looked somewhat charmed by the situation. Jacob glared at him subtly, willing him to sit down.

Credence walked alone through a worldly crowd of late-night diners and theatergoers. Traffic roared past as he tried to give out leaflets but is met with only incredulity and faint derision. The Woolworth Building loomed ahead and Credence glanced towards it with a hint of longing. Percival stood outside watching Credence intently as the young man spotted him, hope fickering across his face. Utterly fascinated, Credence moved across the street toward Percival, barely even looking where he's going- everything around him seem to be forgotten. Credence found himself standing at the end of a dimly lit alleyway with his head bowed. Percival joined him and moved in very close to whisper in a conspirational manner, "You're upset. It's your mother again. Somebody's said something-- what did they say? Tell me?"

Credence grimaced, "D-Do you think I'm a freak?" He asked quietly.

"No-- I think you're a very special young man or I wouldn't have asked you to help me, now would I?" Percival rested a hand on Credence's arm. The human contact seemed to startle and Credence all at the same time. "Have you any news?"

"I-I'm still looking. Mr. Graves, i-if I knew whether it was a girl or boy-"

"My vision showed only the child's immense power. He or she is no older than ten, and I saw this child in close proximity to your mother--she I saw plainly."

"That could be anyone of hundreds." Credence said.

"There is something else." Percival said, his tone had softened as he was being beguiling and comforting, "Something I haven't told you. I saw you beside me in New York. You're the one that gains this child's trust. You are the key-- I saw this. You want to join the wizarding world. I want those things too, Credence. I want them for you. So find the child. Find the child and we'll all be free."
