ONE. in the eyes of rodrick heffley... you're hot

ADELAIDE MONROE knew one thing about her sister that her sister didn't know about herself.

And that was her utter adoration for her best friends Greg Heffley and Rowley Jefferson.

No matter what, Keegan would do anything to protect her now seventh-grade best friends.

But for now, we'll shift the narrative towards Adelaide.

Adelaide could be considered independent. She liked doing certain things on her own but didn't mind a partner.

In the sense of work-life and relationship life.

Though still being a teen, she felt as if she had completely known the ins and outs of being in a relationship at her dire age.

She felt like she knew when to do what and how to do it.

She didn't. She had her fair share of relationships, but she sucked when it came to the nitty-gritty. She knew nothing.

Throwing that out there was enough to let people know what Adelaide's relationships looked like.

But that wasn't what her relationship with Rodrick Heffley looked like.

It wasn't a romantic one but if you quickly glanced at the two of them; you would've thought that something was going on between them.

Whether people saw tension or an actual relationship (remember this is all at first glance), people saw something.

Adelaide saw nothing. She wanted nothing. Her friendship with Rodrick was definitely odd, with the two of them not having that much in common. You could look at them and see the difference in them.

It confused not only Keegan but Greg and Rowley also on how close Adelaide and Rodrick were. The two of them being friends for years and if not for them Keegan definitely wouldn't have been friends with Greg.

Not Keegan's story though.

Adelaide and Rodrick definitely didn't hit it off right away. Actually, Adelaide remembered hitting Rodrick dead in his face for whistling at her when they were younger (maybe elementary school).

Regardless of past emotions and past actions, the two of them drew close with Adelaide being the one who became not only Greg's tutor but also Rodrick's.

Greg could thank both Adelaide and Keegan for getting him into the seventh grade.

Speaking of; currently, both Keegan and Adelaide sat at the local skating rink, tying the laces on their skates.

The local rink was welcoming the newest seventh graders in the surrounding area.

Keegan knew Greg and Rowley were gonna be there and because she seemed to not unattach her from them (not looking at last year's incident) she knew she had to be there.

Adelaide saw no point because she knew Keegan would see them at school the very next day, but took her sister there anyway.

Adelaide didn't want to be alone so she took it upon herself to invite her other friend, Daliah Bowen.

It shocked people that Daliah and Rodrick weren't friends, let alone acquaintances because of how similar the two of them were.

They seemed to like the same music, have similar styles, both of them were friends with Adelaide.

Daliah just didn't see the need to be near, with, or talk to Rodrick in any sort of manner.

Just like Adelaide, Daliah cared about school, wanted to be something, do something with her life that could pay her well. Just because she and Rodrick had similarities in taste didn't mean they would have those same similarities when it came to the outlook of life.

Daliah didn't hate Rodrick. She didn't even know Rodrick. Daliah just didn't care. She made her own friends in her own way.

Dropping that subject, Adelaide finished tying her lace as Keegan had spotted Rowley over by the corner.

She waved her sister off and Adelaide peeked over to see her sister standing with one of her friends.

Daliah sat beside Adelaide, she didn't want to skate and she really didn't want to be near all of the seventh graders and their parents. She asked Adelaide what seemed like a dozen times if she had to go.

The obvious answer stood before us.

Adelaide stood up and brushed her hair out of her face. She didn't want to be at the function herself but if she had to be, she was gonna have fun with it.

"Are you sure you don't want to skate?" Adelaide asked.

"I'll just watch you skate around and hope your skirt doesn't fly up."

Daliah definitely liked to tease Adelaide. Whether it was small things that Adelaide knew were jokes or things that Adelaide couldn't tell if Daliah had been serious about.

"Is my skirt really that short?"

Daliah smiled softly, "No. I promise."

Reassurance was something Daliah and Rodrick knew Adelaide relied on. Adelaide wanted things to be right or good the first time around. No do-overs, no starting over. She wanted things to be the best the first and only time.

Adelaide smiled back at her friend and put herself on the rink.

She hadn't paid much mind to anything around her. From her peripheral, her sister stood near the exit with Greg, Rowley, and Chirag Gupta.

"Hey, Greg! Can you break a leg or something, so we can leave?"

Rodrick took notice of notice of the curly-haired teen that stood with his brother (and of course Rowley but whatever).

He knew that Keegan wouldn't come to a place like this by herself. Yeah, Greg and Rowley were bound to show up, but Keegan definitely wasn't here alone.

And bless took the eye in Adelaide Monroe as she skated past the now quartet (plus two of Rodrick's lingering friends).

In the eyes of Rodrick, Adelaide was hot. Whether she knew that or not. Rodrick knew he was attracted to Adelaide and not just by looks either.

Adelaide finally looped around the area again and stopped right in front of Rodrick. The small smile she gave him would make him melt to the floor, but not in front of everyone.

"That'll never happen." Rodrick chuckled, "Not a chance. There's no way that girl will ever talk to you."

Adelaide looked over at Keegan who gestured towards the blond girl.

"Weren't you two talking earlier?" Adelaide asked.

Siblings argued and siblings teased, but Adelaide and Keegan weren't Greg and Rodrick.

Rodrick teased Greg to the point it felt like he was terrorizing him.

Adelaide teased Keegan to the point it felt like both of them were gonna laugh to the point tears sprang from their eyes.

"I did." Greg smiled, "We'll probably skate later."

"Really? Okay. Well, you see that clock? They play a slow song at the top of every hour for couples skate. If you're so confident, ask her to skate."

"Maybe I will."

"Whatcha ya waiting for, wimp?" Rodrick teased, "You the man."

Adelaide rolled her eyes as the two lingering friends headed off in one direction, leaving her and Rodrick alone.

"Skate with me."

Rodrick looked over at Adelaide.

No, he didn't want to skate, but it was Adelaide.

Rodrick wanted to see Greg fail at this attempt on getting this couple skate with the blond (later known as Holly Hills), but Adelaide.

"No."

Adelaide let her head fall slightly. She really didn't want to be here either, but for the sake of making sure that her sister was okay (not knowing that the Heffley parents were also there), she was staying until Keegan was ready to go.

Adelaide pouted, "Why not? Trying to impress someone?"

"No, but seeing my brother fail at anything brings me amusement, so I'm gonna make him fail."

She knew she couldn't pull Rodrick out of messing with his brother. She could diminish any small interaction they had but overall Rodrick was gonna go what he wanted.

"Just one loop around, please."

Rodrick rested his arms on the border of the rink and looked up at Adelaide who had been moving ever so slightly.

Rodrick shook his head slightly and held a small smirk on his face, "I'll tell you this, I'll do anything else but skate."

"Anything?"

"Anything you want."

He messed up by saying that.

"Fine." She smiled, "You win."

She pushed herself away from him and glided away from him.

He watched her for a moment before walking towards the DJ's booth.

The lights quickly dimmed. The couple skate starting fast than Adelaide had expected.

She rolled her way off and sat back down with Daliah.

"No couple skate for you and Heffley?"

Adelaide sighed, rolling her eyes as she unlaced the skates on her feet.

It was common for Daliah to tease Adelaide about any small couple thing ever.

It was pretty evident (in Daliah's eyes) that Rodrick liked Adelaide in some type of form.

"Stop! Enough of that lameness! Who's ready to rock?"

Looking over, everyone had seen Rodrick standing with the DJ as every other person quickly made their way onto the rink.

That was quickly stopped as Greg's name was shouted from at the same booth by his mother.

If that wasn't embarrassing enough, his father picked him up from the rink and placed him down in front of Rodrick.

It was expected that the Heffley's were going to embarrass Greg whether they meant to or not.

Adelaide held a tight lip as her sister approached her.

Greg Heffley stood in front of everyone in the skating rink as he wiped cake from his face.

"He's not gonna live that one down."

Adelaide looked down at Keegan and over at Rodrick.

He held a wide smile at his brothers embarrassment and looked over at Adelaide.

This was only the beginning.
