Six Weeks Since
Feldcroft was a quiet place, and the Abbotts were very lovely. All they ever asked from June was for her to complete minimal chores whilst they worked; she didn't mind helping out where she could, especially with all they had done for her. They were the reason she was alive right now. A few snatchers came through the village a few weeks ago, knocking on doors to assure everyone was at least half-blood. One person disappeared that day. But they never even bothered the Abbott's. Being a part of the sacred 28, they didn't even consider that they could be hiding a Muggle-Born, let alone Mrs Abbott being a Muggle herself. June didn't sleep at all that night. Nobody ever spoke about it. Even the Fiance of the Muggle-born who was snatched kept his mouth shut.
June figured it was best to hide in the house, get chores down and keep her head low. It worked well.
Feldcroft was smaller; there were more small clusters of the village spreading around the mountain. It was beautiful, and since it was autumn, it tempted June to explore, but she was limited. Every time she considered it, she had to remember that snatchers searched in every crevice. If they ever thought her to be a muggle-born, she would have no authentic way to prove them wrong. Then, she and the Abbotts would both be endangered.
Everything felt like a trap, a cyclical life. She did the same thing every day and was too scared to write a letter to William. It could put too many people in danger. And she hadn't heard a thing from him. It was weird for them, but it was like the summer.
He said he would visit but has yet to do so. It made her worry. She could only imagine what Hogwarts was like under Snape's control.
There wasn't much she would even be able to tell any of her friends about her time in Feldcroft. It's just been so dull, so repetitive. What could she say? Every night, she is haunted by the idea that she could become a threat to everyone June cares for just because she is alive. Her existence puts everyone who conspires with her in danger. The funniest bit about it all to her is that if she is found and killed, to the Death Eaters, it wouldn't really mean anything. She'd just be one of many. It would mean nothing to any of them in the end.
Just like Harry Potter's parents' death, that probably means nothing to them all. They just want Harry dead. That's the death they care about. Eradicating the muggleborns is the bonus at this point.
That is June's biggest fear.
She'd officially been in hiding for six weeks. Six weeks of the same thing, over and over again. The only change is the increase in nightmarish thoughts and sleepless nights.
But something, this one particular day, something different happened. Sirenna and William showed up in Feldcroft. They came into the Abbott cottage through the back door. Nobody expected them to arrive, especially in the condition they appeared in. William was bruised across his face, and Sirenna appeared weakened. June rushed over to the pair without a second thought. Just fear.
"What the fuck happened to you both?"
"Just the Carrow twins. They wanted us to use Crucistus's Curses on people who got detention, but I refused. William got beat up the cause of his mum by Goyle." Mrs Abbott appeared by June's side, guiding William to the sofa, while June did the same for Sirenna. "What about Max?"
"He's smarter than me," Sirenna chuckled at her words. "He complied to the Carrows. He looked terrified of himself after."
"Why didn't he come?"
"He was too ashamed of himself. He's locked himself away in the Ravenclaw Tower. We spoke to Luna before we left. She said she'd seen him enter his dorm, but nothing since." June felt so bad for him; she could only imagine Max sitting on the edge of the bed, far from the wand he used to inflict pain onto others. "I could tell he wanted me to follow his actions, but I'm too stubborn. I'm just glad he didn't get tortured. If you refuse, they just perform it on you." Sirenna said. There was so much behind her look. She started off slightly into the distance as if she was watching herself get tortured over and over again, that her soul only shrivelled away to the back of her mind out of pure dread. "Why did you guys come to visit? How stupid. What if you get caught?" Much to the shock of all in the room, June raised her voice slightly. The stress was really getting to her. "It's okay, June." William placed his hand on hers, looking her dead in the eyes as he spoke. His tone was so calm it was hard not to believe what he said. "We thought it threw. Neville realised most passages have been blocked, so we have all started to make new ones. Plus, half of us go around grafting Hogwarts throughout the night without getting caught. Trust us." June did. She trusted all her friends blindly, which was probably a fatal flaw, but she was utterly loyal to each of them.
June spent much time with them, looking after the pair. She hated seeing her friends in such fragile conditions. She worried for Max; she always knew that he kept many of his feelings close to his chess; he was challenging to decipher, mainly cause that was his aim. But he didn't usually isolate himself.
William watched how June acted. She seemed different, not in a good way. As if her mental health deteriorated slightly each day, which it did. She was constantly worrying. He felt selfish. He was running around at night, attempting to terrorise the Death Eaters with simple vandalism about Dumbledore's Army and Harry Potter. He wasn't scared of what might happen to him. He didn't even think about how it would affect June if he got caught. He didn't even think about what she'd feel when he turned up, all bruised from his early morning beating. He had been so selfish and would never forgive himself for that. There she was, considering everyone, and he just thought of himself. Of course, many of his actions were done in the name of June and his mother, but he never considered how they'd feel if he got hurt or worse.
Later, when they all left. June cried. And William knew it. He could feel it deep down from seeing what she was like when he visited. Leaving her for a second time was just as hard.
