~Chapter 8~
I got up from the couch and went into the kitchen. The only sound in the house was the television that played in the background. I was home alone, Damon and Rachel were both at work. They wouldn’t get off for a few hours so I’ve been keeping myself busy. All was well until I got hungry and didn’t find anything good to eat. Normally I would suck it up and find something in the house but I had money to buy something.
I made an online order to pick up and was set on my way. Nothing too special, just some food from a local restaurant. When I got the food I decided to take a shortcut home so the food would be hot. It was around eight at night as I walked home, the sun slowly starting to set. I went through an alleyway and as I got to my street I bumped into someone.
“Sorry.” I said, but something was off about this person. Because they didn’t even look at me, they just hurried off.
I shrugged it off and kept moving, as I was almost home, I saw this beautiful black cat sitting in a tree. I reached into my back pocket for my phone, only to find that pocket empty. After searching all my pockets, I concluded that it had been stolen. I continued to walk home, the police couldn’t do anything, I never got a look at the person’s face.
When I got home, I turned on the television and decided to watch Sherk. As I was finishing my setup I had, there was a knock at the door. Who could be at the door at eight fifteen? When I opened the door, it was revealed to be Takashi.
“Takashi, what a wonderful surprise. What brings you here at this time?” I asked, inviting him inside.
“I’ve come to return something to you,” Before I had a chance to reply he continued as he reached into his pocket. “Your phone.”
“How’d you find it?”
“I saw it being sold.” He said as he handed it to me. “And I should know that phone case from anywhere.”
It wasn’t too surprising he still remembered. Our graduation year, we bought each other gifts. We had already broken up but we had both gotten each other gifts so we figured why not still do it? He got me a phone case with our friend group on it and he gave me a heart locket, while I gave him a watch with our names engraved on it.
“Come on in, I need to return that jacket you let me borrow from last week.” I said as I went into the laundry room to grab it. I quickly returned and handed him the jacket.
“Thank you.” Were the remaining words that were said before he started to leave.
“Wait! Did you want something to eat? I bought extra food, but I don’t think I could eat it.” Truthfully, I could’ve eaten it but I shouldn’t and I could use some company.
“Are you sure? I wouldn’t want to intrude.”
“Nonsense, if anything I feel like I’m going to lose it by myself.”
As we sat to eat and started watching Sherk, it was like feeling déjà vu. Then it was like I unlocked a memory I had forgotten about. This was our first date after we became official. We wanted to keep it simple yet classy, so dinner and a movie. It hurt a lot thinking about that memory. After that date, I thought we would be together for a long time.
But that was just high school me, the one who also thought she would never fall in love. I shake off those feelings and try to make new, friendlier ones with Takashi, after all I’m an adult not a teen.
If anything truly reminded me of the good old days, it was the amount of uncomfortable silence. When it was broken, it was only broken by small talk that would last three minutes.
When the movie ended I walked Takashi out front.
“Well, thanks for finding my phone and thanks for joining me.”
“It’s no big deal.” He gave a small smile but his eyes only showed sadness. “I’ll see you around.”
“What if we do this again, except we go out?” I was finally able to let out. “We could meet up at the local park Friday at five?”
“That would be nice. See you in two days.”
As he left, I smiled to myself. I can repair and reconnect the friendship I once had with Takashi.
