On Rehabilitation: Nothing Down Below

The famous saying is right

Love is like a drug.

And it has all'o'the functions of a drug.

Once you're there, the taste is exciting;

But when it dissolves,

You'll crave it forever.

Forever.

The weight is lifted from an indifferent heart

As writing it; a little hug, touché, if pleased,

Oozes from the bodies of the soul,

Densely glazed in umber.

It oozes onto the ink, which, seamless really,

Constructs itself into these squiggly-seeming sentences,

Honest, in mad sense.

And the final verse appears

Why – has not been drenched in tears?

Have the minstrels flounce-appeared

To commend such loss of fear?

The commend is lost, my dear

And the fear is never lost;

Losing love is leaping low;

Earth appears, appears and sneers:

"There is nothing down below."

Hence the worst is down below

Nowhere at to aim or throw

The remains of ragged souls

And the concrete of fall'n hope

What was there is now long gone:

There is nothing down below.

There shows nothing down below.
