Gotta Go Fast

Kiyomi was sleeping soundly on the couch when she was awoken by a cry. She pushed the blanket off her and looked at where the cry had come from. Haruki was crying, with Katashi comforting him. They were both there for a sleepover.

She crawled over, "Haruki?"

"N-Nightmare."

"About the play?"

"Yeah."

Kiyomi hugged him, "It's fine. It's over."

"It's still scary. How do you deal with this so easily?"

"I mean I was part of a shooting earlier this year..."

Katashi interrupted them, "Hey, Kiyomi, you never told us what happened after you forced us out."

Haruki rubbed his eyes, "Can you tell us?"

"Oh, of course!"

------------

Kiyomi sat down next to Katashi and Haruki in the cafeteria at their usual table.

Haruki raised his hand in greeting while Katashi simply nodded.

"What's going on with you two on this here fine day?"

Katashi shrugged, "Nothing exciting."

"I-I have a test later today."

"Oof same," Kiyomi laid her head in her arms, "Ugh, I suck in math."

"I could help you, you know?" Katashi tapped her on the head.

"Yeah, but you're boring."

"Wow, thanks."

Haruki giggled.

Kiyomi sat up straight, "So what I was thinking of was-"

A faint gunshot was briefly heard.

The trio paused, but everyone else in the cafeteria kept talking.

Kiyomi shrugged, "Maybe we could have a study group-"

Another gunshot echoed around the cafeteria.

This time, everyone quieted a little.

Kiyomi stood up, looking into the hallway that led to the high school classes, seeing a gun peek around the corner.

"Get down."

"What're you-"

She grabbed the boys' heads and shoved them underneath the table, following soon after.

A loud gunshot, easily identified as being inside the room, was heard from across the room.

Everyone screamed in unison with more gunshots.

Kiyomi glanced at the other two, and quietly whispered, "Run. Hide. Fight. Run. Use anything as cover and quickly get to an exit. Avoid contact with the shooter." She grabbed a tray off their table and dumped all the food off it.

Kokichi had made her binge school shooting instructional videos one night with him just to be prepared, and Kiyomi was glad for that.

They were on the opposite side of the cafeteria from the shooter. Near them was a hallway leading to the kitchen and emergency exit.

Kiyomi grabbed their hands, making sure her voice was quiet, "On my mark, we go."

"Are you crazy?" Katashi hissed, in a similarly quiet manner.

"Yes. Ready?"

She felt both of their hands tighten.

"Yeah."

"O-Ok."

"Go." She let go of both of their hands.

Kiyomi used the tray as a makeshift shield, running towards the hallway. Looking back, she saw that all three of them had made it without any injuries.

She peered out.

Multiple kids were still cowering, and a few were undetermined. (She didn't want to believe they had died just yet.)

Barely anyone was near the exit hallway.

Perks of being the loner kids.

A small whimper came from her right.

Karen was hiding behind a trash can near the back. Seemed like she was just trying to throw her trash away when this started.

"You two go."

"W-What about you?"

"I'll be fine."

"Kiyomi, don't be stupid."

Kiyomi turned to the two of them and smiled, "Trust me."

Katashi paused, before nodding, "If you die, I'm reviving you to kill you again." He proceeded to take Haruki towards the exit and left.

Kiyomi waited til the two were out of sight before crawling over to Karen, using the tables as cover, "Hey."

Karen squeaked, curling further into a ball.

Kiyomi reached out her hand, "Grab on, I'll take you towards the exit."

"B-But he'll shoot us."

"We can use the tables as cover. C'mon. The opportunity isn't going to be available for much longer."

Karen slowly took Kiyomi's hand in her own.

"Let's go."

Kiyomi weaved through the tables with Karen, making it to the exit again.

"Hey, you should go."

"What about you?"

"I'm going to try and get more people to the exit."

Kiyomi turned around, but the slightly shorter girl grabbed her and turned her back.

"Be careful. I don't want you to get hurt."

Kiyomi pat her head, "Gotcha."

She turned back around to be met with the sight of the shooter's back.

Apparently, he had blocked the exit without noticing the two girls, somehow.

Kiyomi turned back around, pushing Karen in front of her.

Abort mission. Abort mission. Abort mission.

Karen and Kiyomi walked out of the school.

Police were at the doorway, guns pointed at the two.

Kiyomi immediately put her hands in the air, nudging Karen to do the same.

The police stormed into the school.

Kiyomi let out a heavy sigh, "Holy shit."

------------

Haruki interrupted, "And that's when we met up again!"

Katashi nodded, "Hey, did you know your dad came to us first?"

"No? Share!"

----------

Katashi and Haruki were standing near the parking lot. Katashi had  already called the police.

In a matter of minutes, the police had shown up.

Thank god for their school being close to a police station.

Shuichi walked up to the two, "Hey!"

"Ouma?" Katashi turned to look at him, "What're you doing here?"

"I was at the police station when you two called," He looked around, "Where's Kiyomi?"

"S-She's still inside."

"...What?"

Haruki started messing with his ponytail, "I-I said s-she's still i-inside."

Shuichi seemed to go into a state of despair.

They all did for a minute.

The exit doors slammed open and Kiyomi and Karen walked out.

"YOMI!"

Kiyomi turned to her dad, and tackle hugged him, "Dad!"

"Are you okay? What happened? What did you do? Who was shooting-"

"Yes. Shooting. Get three people and myself out. I don't know. Calm down!"

Shuichi only hugged her tighter in response.

-----------

"It was sweet h-how much he cared about you."

Katashi clicked his tongue, "Hey, who actually was shooting?"

"Some high school student. No one died, but some got injured."

"That's nice."

Kiyomi pat Haruki's head, "Can you go back to sleep now?"

Haruki nodded.

She hugged him, "Alright then. Good night."

Shuichi watched the trio fall back asleep from the kitchen. He smiled and went back to his room with Kokichi.
