Thirteen: Squids

It was near Thanksgiving, 2009 when he just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Mitch and Jerome had been out hunting when they found an Atlantian, a member of a race very closely related to the squids, wandering out in Ellis Forest outside the base.
They put him in a cell despite his protests and many claims to not having anything to do with the squids.
Jason stared at Amanda as she explained the newcomer to Jason. "...So why don't you believe him?" Jason asked.
"Today, my opinion doesn't matter. Yours does, because you're going to be interrogating him." Amanda said.
    Jason's eyes widened. "Wh- me?!"
"You're my apprentice aren't you?" Amanda asked.
    "Yeah, but-"
"Jason, when I'm gone, you're gonna be in charge. And when that happens, you're gonna be doing all the interrogations around here. You gotta learn sometime kiddo."
    Jason sighed. "Fine..."
"Okay well here's a few tips." Amanda said. "How's your poker face?"
    "What's poker?"
"Never mind. Um... Try to keep as straight a face as you can. And don't let him know you're nervous. And don't try to be good cop and bad cop at the same time."
    "I need Ty."
    "What? Why?"
"Ty can be my bad cop."
"Jason no you have to do this alone."
    "Damn it..."
"C'mon, you can do this." Amanda smiled encouragingly. "We both know you've been through worse."
    "...Yeah..." Jason sighed. "Okay, fine..."
"Good!" Amanda grabbed his wrist and dragged him out the Lab door. "C'mon, I'll watch and make sure you don't have a train wreck."
Jason just nodded and kept in stride beside her.
They went down the stairs into the basement, where the cells were. Six of them, three on each side of the stairs. Most of the cells were empty, aside from one. The prisoner inside was sitting down at the table. His eyes were white, his hair in a quiff, black and fading to a turquoise color at the tips. He wore a grey jacket with two blue symmetrical patches on the front and a darker grey shirt underneath. He had orange fins on his cheeks. He looked pretty pissed.
Jason took a deep breath and looked at Amanda, who gave him the thumbs up, before he unlocked the cell door and went inside, Amanda locking it after him.
The boy, maybe in his late teens, looked at Jason as he sat down across from him. For a moment, they stared at each other.
Then the boy spoke. "You gonna ask me something, army boy?"
Jason swallowed. He couldn't think of anything to ask.
"Are you trying to intimidate me?" The boy asked. "It's not working."
Jason coughed. "Er... What's your name?"
   "Husky Quentin Kipp, you?"
   "Jason."
"Cool. Can you let me go please?"
"No, I have to ask you a few questions first..." Jason cleared his throat nervously. "So um... Why were you on our territory?"
"I was taking a stroll." Husky said, clearly very bored. "I live in Mistral. I got bored. I took a long walk. Next thing I know I got jumped by the frickin' Farpoint Control over here."
"Do you have any way to prove you're not a squid...?"
"Do you have any way to probe I am?" Husky sighed. "And can you stop with the squid thing please? They're called Teuthidans. Which, by the way, have tentacles. Do I have tentacles? Do you have eyes behind that odd-looking helmet of yours there?"
Jason hesitated, then glanced back at Amanda for help, who had sat down on the floor behind the bars.
She was biting her lip in thought. "...Your call." She said finally.
Jason turned back to Husky after taking a deep breath. He stared at the  Atlantian for several minutes, searching his face. "You do realize that if you're lying, if you're not who you say you are, this entire base could fall."
   "Um... General...?"
Amanda looked up and blinked as she saw Ian, the boy who had appeared in Bodil's odd realm a few months ago. "Yes, what is it?" She asked.
Husky seemed oddly happy about the newcomer.
   "That's Husky... He's not a squid, ma'am..."
Husky sighed loudly in relief. "Thank you, Ian!"
Jason looked at Ian in surprise. Said boy looked quite sheepish. "You know him?" Jason asked incredulously.
Ian nodded. "He's my friend. He's never even been inside any squid base."
   Husky nodded. "That's true!"
Jason stood, looking at Amanda. "Alibi checks out."
Amanda smiled and nodded. "You did well. Alright, Husky, you're free to go."
Husky huffed and stood. "Finally..." He said rather grouchily.
Jason left the cell and watched as a Husky did too. "Husky, you wanna join me and my friends for lunch?"
   Husky shrugged. "I could eat."
Jason looked at Amanda. "Is that all?"
Amanda nodded proudly. "Go eat, you deserve it."
Jason smiled, before he and Husky left the cells. Ian followed them rather shyly, sticking close to Husky.
Amanda watched them go, then went her own direction, towards West Wing.

It had been Sky's idea to train, as it usually was. Ty always teased him, saying he was just trying to make his mentor proud, and Sky never once corrected him. But it was working, and Ty and Sky made an excellent pair on the battlefield.
Ty was getting very good at his parkour thing. He was starting to apply it to his fighting as well, so he was hard to beat even in training.
The two brought the others along this time; Mitch and Jerome, who had adjusted well to living among humans although he quite often communicated with Mitch in only Latin. Sky had expected Mitch to stick to himself and practice shooting at the archery range, but to his surprise, he picked up a practice dagger. Also with them was Husky, who mainly just used water from the nearby pool under the parkour course, and of course, Jason and Ian.
The two weren't the best at fighting, so they sat on the side, watching their friends beat the shit out of each other with mild amusement.
Ty and Sky kept on going only against each other, and it was close. Neither seemed to be able to be able to beat the other. Then Ty did something unexpected. He dropped his dagger and grabbed Sky's wrist, and with a surprising bout of strength, he somehow managed to flip Sky over with help from his foot kicking the back of Sky's knee to make his leg buckle.
Sky fell down on his back and before he could react, Ty grabbed his blade and pointed it at his chest, smirking. "Say uncle."
Sky snorted. "What are you gonna do, stab my with that wooden sword?"
Ty didn't answer, and instead began to hit Sky repeatedly with the flat of the oaken practice blade. Sky yelped and got up quickly. "Alright, uncle! Uncle!"
Ty grinned triumphantly. "Ha! The Deadlox in training wins again!"
Then he was promptly drenched by Husky, who was smirking. Ty just sighed.
"Oh, how the mighty fall." Sky said, snickering.
Ty didn't even look at him.
Jason looked up from where he was studying the notes he'd taken at the Academy that day as Seto sat beside him and Ian.
He raised an eyebrow. "Aren't you gonna train too?"
Seto shook his head. "Nah... Can't."
    "Why not?" Ian asked.
"I don't have any fighting skills at all." Seto said. "Maybe if I had stronger magic, I could participate, but..." He held out his hands, and nothing happened. He sighed. "I'm just an Enchanter."
Jason shrugged. "Well, join the club of people who just kinda hang out and watch."
"We're gonna have jackets made!" Ian said excitedly.
Seto just chuckled and leaned back against the bench, watching as the other five continuing to train. None noticed as Tom walked into the room and leaned in the archway, watching interestedly as they continued to train for almost a whole hour before he nodded to himself and walked away.
