Seventeen: Magic
In the night, Seto had a dream.
He woke up gasping and in a cold sweat, and try as he might, he couldn't remember what the dream was about.
He sat there in his tent, staring straight ahead as he he racked his brain, but he couldn't remember anything at all.
He rubbed his face tiredly with a sigh, laying down.
He shut his eyes and curled back up under his blanket, trying to sleep again.
It took him almost another hour to do so.
Little did he know that every Sorcerer had a nightmare they couldn't remember the night before they unlocked their magic.
The next morning the team packed up and set out again.
They were quieter than yesterday, knowing they were closer than ever.
To Sky's surprise, they reached the base a few hours past midday.
Every teenager in the group was unsure and worried, but they knew they had to do this.
Sky took a deep breath. "Okay... We'll split up into two groups. If you find Void and Amanda, set off the base alarm and run."
"That's a really dangerous idea."
"Well how else can we tell the other group we made it out."
Jason hesitated, then looked at Ty. "Ty's headset. And my helmet. They both have radios in them. But my helmet blew up..."
"We don't have time or the materials to have you make another one. Anybody have any other ideas?"
"...I held onto the pieces." Jason said, setting down his backpack. "If you give me ten, twenty minutes I can make something more crude."
Sky bit his lip. "...Alright man. Hurry."
Jason nodded and took out the pieces, then a small bag that was full of tools.
Everyone watched as he got to work.
He started sawing off a large piece of his helmet's visor. "I'm gonna have to fix this when we get back..." He muttered to himself as he attached the communicator that had been inside his helmet.
A few minutes passed as he continued to work.
Then, finally, he grinned and put it on. "How's it look?" He asked. It was an orange visor that only covered his eyes.
"...You look kinda like Frozone." Ty said.
Jason rolled his eyes and switched something on on the side of his visor. "Can you hear me in your headphones?"
Ty hesitated, then nodded.
"Try saying something, see if I can hear you." Jason said as he started to pack his supplies back inside his backpack.
"Jason wanna get those chains and do something kinky wth me?"
"TY."
"What? You told me to say something so I did."
"I was thinking like 'Testing testing one-two-three' not some sexual shit - you know, I shouldn't have expected anything else." Jason looked at Sky. "What are the teams?"
Sky stared at the team, biting his lip as he thought."...I'll lead team A, Ty, I want you to lead team B."
Ty blinked in surprise. "Me?"
Sky nodded. "You're my backup guy, you know better than anyone what I might do."
Ty nodded. "Alright..."
"Jason, you come with me... Seto with Ty. Ian and Husky will stay with me and Mitch and Jerome go with Ty. There."
Everyone nodded. "Everybody ready to do this?"
The other nodded.
"Alright... Team B, you guys go in through the South Entrance and start looking. Team A, we'll go in North and do the same. Any questions?"
"What do we do if either of the teams are caught?" Husky asked.
"...Don't get caught."
"Great."
"Maybe you should give us a speech Sky." Mitch said. "You know, pep talk us?"
"Good idea. Don't die."
"... Wonderful. We're all wonderfully inspired." Ty snorted.
"Fine. Survive and I'll pay for everyone's lunch for the next month."
"The lunch is free."
"WE'LL GO OUT TO EAT THEN."
Ty snorted with laughter. "Okay, sold. C'mon B-Team, let's get this show on the road."
The teams separated with their leaders.
As Sky's team walked through the North entrance, they stayed dead silent.
Their hearts pounced as their blood pumped in their ears.
Sky gripped his sword tightly and turned to the left. They reached a staircase after a few moments. "Up or down?" Jason hissed.
"Cells would be downstairs, wouldn't they?" Ian whispered.
Sky nodded. "Right... Down it is." He started down, leading the way. As he reached the bottom, a squid noticed and gasped. Husky quickly lifted his water from his canteen as Ian opened his shield.
Sky's eyes narrowed in concentration before their swords clashed.
He kicked him in the shin before elbowing his jaw and stabbing him through as Jason ran past him, looking in all the cells. Near the end, he stopped and gasped. "Commander! General!"
"About ti - Jason?!" A familiar voice exclaimed in surprise.
Sky looked up and grinned in relief, shoving the squid's limp body to the side as he raced toward Jason.
Jason nodded and ran to the side, activating the radio on his helmet.
As he told the other team to meet them in the cells, Sky ran up to Void and Amanda. "What's the damage?"
"Amanda got tortured the most, I only got it for maybe an hour and it wasn't that bad. She's unconscious, but she'll be okay... I hope."
"Seto can look at her when we get out." Sky looked up. "Can you carry her?"
"Of course! I ain't that old yet!"
Sky nodded and stood. "C'mon, let's get moving! We don't have much time!"
Just as he said it, the alarm went off.
Husky groaned. "Can we not get a break?!"
"Apparently not." Sky growled and ran up the stairs. "Let's move, hurry!"
Everyone followed him, running as fast as they could, Void looking rather impressed.
Sky ran into Ty, who glanced at Amanda and nodded to him.
The whole team, now with Void and Amanda, bolted out the front door.
"Okay, okay, headcount!" Sky said once they were in the woods. As he looked at them all, Ty froze.
"Where's Seto."
"...You've gotta be kidding me." Sky groaned. "Stay here, get Amanda and CV to safety!"
"But Sky-"
"I'll be fine!" Sky interrupted Void. "Go!" He snapped, before he turned and sprinted back inside alone.
"Damnit Rookie!" Void hissed.
Sky raced through the squid base, praying he would find Seto.
"Seto?!" He called out, hoping for an answer.
There was a silent moment before he got a reply. "Sky!"
"Oh thank god..." He muttered before running toward the sound.
Then he turned a corner and froze.
A hybrid squid was standing there, holding a blade up to Seto's neck.
He stared at the hybrid, his eyes narrowed.
The squid smiled grimly. "I think you know how this is going to go."
Sky's grip tightened on his sword.
"You're going to put down your weapon and tell me which direction your companions went."
"Tuh." Sky scoffed. "And hell will freeze over, right?"
The squid smirked. "I'll see what I can do, Vaerin."
"My companions are long gone." Sky growled.
"In which direction." The hybrid demanded.
"I'm not telling you. Go ahead, kill him, see if I give a damn."
The squid raised an eyebrow. "You'd risk your friend's life to try to outsmart me?"
"He's not my friend; he's just someone I got stuck with on this mission. Kill him, see if I care."
"I'm too smart for that, Adam. I know you're close to him. You had to be to risk your life coming back for him."
"I'm the mission leader, I'd get in trouble if I didn't try."
"Stop taking me for a fool. Put down your weapon."
"Nah."
The hybrid sighed as though all of this were nothing more than a nuisance. "Oh please, we don't have all - hey!" He yelped as a purple spark lashed out at his hand and Seto pushed away, running to Sky.
Sky pushed Seto behind him protectively, pointing his sword at the squid. "Are you alright Seto?"
"Y... Yeah..."
Sky sighed in relief. "How'd you do that?"
"I-It just happened..."
Suddenly, a whole bunch of squids ran into the large corridor and surrounded them completely.
Seto's eyes widened. "Oh no...!"
The squid smirked. "Should've run while you had the chance."
Sky glared at him. "I'm no coward."
The hybrid raised an eyebrow. "There's a difference between cowardice and cleverness. Just as there's a different between bravery and stupidity."
Sky rolled his eyes, standing back to back with Seto as the squids closed in around them.
Seto looked around with wide eyes. "Wh-What do we do?!"
"Fight like hell? I don't know!"
Seto sighed and looked around for an idea, but none came. He felt an odd feeling rise up in his chest, slowly growing more powerful than the fear.
Sky held his sword tighter as the squids got closer.
"Who are you?" He growled to the squid who had first held Seto captive.
The squid smiled at him. "Owlet." He said calmly. "And I must say, it truly is an honor to finally meet you, Adam Dahlburg."
The squid's name made bells go off in Sky's head, but before he could think about it...
Seto started glowing.
Sky looked over his shoulder in surprise. "Seto?"
Seto didn't answer. He let out a cry and suddenly grabbed his head. The second he did, a ring of violet fire flew out from his body and rested in a circle, separating he and Sky from the squids.
Sky's eyes widened. "Oh my God!"
Seto looked up in shock, his eyes wide as stared at it. He lifted his hands and the fire extended up to the ceiling. He smiled wide and looked at Sky.
Sky stared back with wide eyes before he grinned in excitement and something like pride.
Seto bit his lip and turned his head back around. His eyes narrowed and they started to shine bright white. He moved his hands, and they etched runes into the stone floor with the fire. Then, as they were all finished, the ring suddenly closed in around them and there was the sound of a loud explosion before everything went black.
