Seven: Epic

A month passed and with it a treaty between the High City and the Sky Army was formed. Throughout that time, Jerome persuaded Mitch to leave the library and train with him in West Wing, where the Dual Legion was located. Turner was impressed both by their ability to work together and their skill, and took them on as his apprentices.
Unfortunately, this left the library without a daytime librarian.
Also during that month, I got used to training every day. But honestly, the whole deal was incredibly frustrating to me. I didn't seem to be getting any better in any way, and Void never gave a wayward "nice" to anything I did. Maybe I should just resign, honestly, it might be best for everyone.
I started having nightmares of my dad. While I was in serious depression, I didn't have any. But now I did. Sometimes I couldn't tell what was real and what wasn't. The only one I told about them was Ty, as always. He attempted to convince me to go to the Infirmary for help sleeping, but I didn't want to. I started getting less and less sleep, but I would be fine.
But then, something I didn't expect happened.
It had been over a month, almost two, since Ty and I joined the army. I walked into the Training Hall early to start another day of training, but Void wasn't there. He'd never not been there, I was even a few minutes late myself. Could he possibly be late?
I could've just gone home, but to be honest, I was curious. I went to his office, and knocked on the door. "Commander?" I called.
The door creaked open on its own. I poked my head around the corner and blinked in surprise. Void was there, having had fallen asleep at his desk. I was about to leave him alone and go do something else, when I noticed there was a paper in his hand. Curiosity came over and I entered the room, creeping towards him. I gently took the paper and looked at it. It was a letter, from someone named Lillian.
I blinked and looked at him again, and at the hand still on the desk. It was then I noticed that on his finger, there was a ring. I didn't realize he was married... I guess he must have moved on from his dead fiancé then.
I set the letter down and stepped away, leaving him alone. I walked down the hall to the lab, finding Amanda there at her table as usual. I cleared my throat and she looked up and smiled. "Sky, hello!" She greeted.
    I smiled. "Morning."
She blinked in surprise. "Is it morning already? Oh dear, I stayed up all night again..." She coughed. "Well, anyways, what can I do for you?"
"I was just curious... Who's Void married to?"
Amanda blinked. "Void isn't married, sweetheart."
"Huh?" I was now very confused. "But he has a ring."
Realization dawned on her face. "Oh... Sky, he isn't married. He wears that ring to honor his fiancé, the one who died."
    I blinked. "Oh..."
After that I went home, and got a few hours of sleep. I had a nightmare again, but I ended up fine, as always.
I was three months in to my apprenticeship before I got another mission. And this one was fun.
I'd started hanging out with Mitch and Jerome more often; they were actually really cool.
Ty became friends with some Star Cadet named... What was it Aren? I dunno, but he isn't really that important to the story, except for the fact that he rigged Ty's headphones, the ones he was always wearing, that if he said the word "stop" he'd shift into two forms. A ghosting form and a sleeping form. The kid was really smart, he would've been a great scientist. Would've.
Three days after the invention was finished, squids attacked the base. They raided the Lab and of course, only two people had been in there at the time. Aren was killed, and Ty was captured.
I went right to Void, and demanded I be given the mission to find him. He tried to order me to stay, saying a single Dead Army recruit worth risking my life over, but I didn't listen. I told him I'd stay at the base, listen to his word, but that very night I got a sword from the base and headed for the door. As I was going, a Star Cadet stopped me.
   "Er... Where are you going?"
I turned and blinked in surprise as I recognized the Cadet. Or rather, his outfit. "Oh, Jason." I said. "I'm going after Ty."
He raised an eyebrow. "That kid with the headphones? Why?"
"He's my best friend." I explained. "And I can't let him get hurt. What about you, what are you doing awake?"
He held up a small device. "Something set off an alarm on the perimeter."
I blinked. "Something broke in and you're going by yourself to find out what it is?"
I couldn't see his expression through his helmet, but he probably rolled his eyes as he pulled something out of the sheath on his side and showed it of me. "Ray gun." He said. "Shoots basically bullets of plasma and is powered by both moonlight and sunlight."
"...Wow." I said. "So you can shoot?"
"Yeah can shoot easy." He shrugged. "Aiming is hard though."
I snorted. "Right, have fun with that. I can't waste time here."
He nodded. "Good luck, dude." He contined walking down the hall in the opposite direction as I headed to the door. I was almost out, when suddenly, Jason shouted out. I stopped and turned around. "Jason?!" My conscience got the better of me and I ran back. Jason had turned a corner before he shouted and I pulled my sword out of my hands. I saw something blue and didn't take any chances. I brought my sword down, but as I touched it, the blue thing disappeared. I blinked and looked around in confusion. Jason was standing a few feet away, looking very surprised.
The blue figure reappeared a few feet from Jason. "Well that was a bit of an over reaction." He said.
It was then that I recognized him. "...Ty?!"
Jason looked at him as well. "What the hell is this?" He reached out to touch him, but his hand went right through. He was a bluish color, and transparent. Jason's eyes widened. "Holy shit." He said. "Aren did it."
"What? What'd he do?" I asked.
Jason's eyes stayed on Ty. "Aren has been working on building a protonic cerebral magnifit using brain waves for years, I didn't realize he'd actually pulled it off!"
"Uh..." Ty stared at him. "What the hell did you just say. Was that mandarin."
Jason sighed. "Protonic cerebral magnific via brain waves. You're basically a hologram ghost thing being projected from whatever place you're being held in. Your solid body is probably asleep in your cell, your consciousness mostly here but also there like a dream... God, that must be exhausting, your soul is split between two forms."
"Wait, so Ty is Voldemort?" I asked.
"No no, the hologram isn't always around, so Ty's like... Temporary Voldemort."
Ty raised an eyebrow. "Temporary Voldemort." He said.
"Yeah, pretty much. Do you feel alright? How do you feel?" Jason asked.
"Really tired, but I'll be fine." Ty pointed a finger first at me, then Jason. "You two idiots need to bust me out and I don't trust either of you to do that right so I'm coming with you."
    "What? Why me?" Jason asked.
"Because my other smart friend is dead and you look interesting."
Jason glanced at me, then back at him. "You know what, sure. I could go for a mission."
I nodded, smiling slightly. "Let's do this!"
Ty cheered, and I noticed how his voice was slightly distorted, a bit like a robot. "LES DO DIS!" He shouted excitedly.
