Nine: SYSTeM eRROR
*Third Person*
Long after dark, all three were still awake. They laughed and talked around their campfire, having quite a bit of fun warming up to each other.
"So you guys are from the same village, but you're not brothers?" Jason asked.
"No, we were neighbors, but Ty spent like almost every night at my house anyway." Sky said. "We're basically brothers."
"That's sweet." Jason said teasingly, pursing his lips.
Ty rolled his eyes. "So what about you? Where are you from?"
Jason tensed up. "...It's far from here."
"Yeah, our town is took maybe we're near each other." Sky said.
"No, trust me, mine's further."
"Sure dude." Ty said, shrugging.
Sky sighed. "Alright, well... I'm gonna get some shut eye. You guys should too, we got a lotta ground to cover tomorrow."
"Yup."
"Sure..."
Sky laid down in the grass on his back, taking off his sunglasses and covering her eyes with the crook of his elbow. Ty stared at him for a moment before looking into the fire again. Jason was laying on his back, hands behind his head. Ty wasn't sure if he was asleep or not because his eyes were covered by his helmet.
After several minutes of silence, Ty decided the odd Star Cadet must have called asleep as well. He sighed and stood up, stretching. Over the past month that he'd been training, he hadn't gotten a single break. Well, that was really his own fault. He only had to train for two hours every day. But he'd been training fourteen hours every single day. He would go up to the Dead Army leader, Tom as he liked to be called even by recruits and ask for help again and again because he wanted to get better. Because he was horrible now. He couldn't even do a flip.
Ty was working on a move where you leapt up and kicked off a wall, and flipped over, landing on your feet. He'd tried it over and over, but not once had it worked. Ty look around now and saw a tall tree, void of low branches it looked like. He chewed at his lip and looked around. Jason and Sky still hadn't moved, both looking asleep still. Ty looked back at the tree and sighed. Well... What did he have to lose?
He backed up a few steps before focusing himself and running forward. He leapt up and kicked off the tree, bending back quickly. But as he did, his foot caught on a branch above and he lost his balance, falling to the ground on his back, his headphones falling off. He let out a soft yelp of pain and his holographic form phased.
Over by the fire, Jason sat up. He had been awake the whole while. "Oh shit, are you okay?"
"Uh... Y-Yeah..." Ty stood shakily, before he stumbled and fell again. He tried to use his arms to break his fall, but one went through the earth like mist. He stared at it in shock for a moment, Jason's face unseen due to his helmet. Then Ty cried out and scrambled to his feet backing away. His projection started to fade again.
"Wait wait, hold still!" Jason stood and ran over to his headphones. He put them on Ty's ears again, grabbing his wrist to hold him still. He smiled lightly behind his visor as Ty's skin grew less and less transparent until he looked real again. "You need to wear the headphones or your soul will return to your body in the cell." He said. "You're okay now though, it's alright."
Ty took a deep breath and calmed himself down. After a moment, he looked down at Jason's hand, which was still holding his wrist. Jason seemed to realize this as well and let go. "You good?"
"Yeah... I'm fine." Ty said.
"Cool. I'm gonna go lay down again."
Jason started to turn away, but Ty grabbed his arm. "Hang on a sec."
Jason blinked. "What?"
"Why are you always wearing your helmet?"
"...Oh..."
"Are you hiding something?" Ty asked. Jason tried to pull away gently, but Ty tightened his grip. "I won't tell anyone! C'mon, trust me. I'm just curious is all."
Jason stared at him, his expression - as usual - hidden by his helmet. Finally, he sighed and pulled his hand from Ty's grasp and reached up to his helmet. He bowed his head and he pulled off his helmet and held it at his side as he looked up, eyes closed.
Ty blinked in surprise. Jason had light brown hair, almost blonde, that was rather messy due to his helmet. He had freckles dotting his cheeks and nose, and even his forehead in some places. Overall, he looked quite attractive for a science nerd.
Ty stared at him for a moment. "...Open your eyes."
"Um... No."
"Why on earth not?"
"Because... It's not on earth..." Jason hesitated before he sighed. "I'm gonna regret this." He opened his eyes.
Ty froze.
Jason's eyes were a bright blue; like a white-ish blue. They were shining brightly, almost enough to illuminate the dark. "...Whoa..." Ty said softly.
Jason's cheeks tinted a dark blue color. "I um... I'm... Not from around here..." He said, not meeting Ty's gaze.
"...Tell me." Ty said. "I won't laugh."
Jason chuckled lightly as he looked up at him. "Swear?"
Ty nodded without missing a beat.
Jason sighed again, biting his lip before he looked up. "See that star there? Just east of Orion?" He pointed at the star he meant.
"I see it."
"That's where I'm from."
"...Oh. Oh! You're...?"
Jason nodded, not looking at him. "It has two suns in the center of the solar system. A little one circling a black hole. There are there planets orbiting both. There used to be four..." Jason swallowed. "It was called Thea. We took care of our planet. The grass and the leaves were blue like our blood and the sky was orange and the sunset was golden. It was beautiful."
Ty stared at Jason while Jason looked at the stars. "Yeah..." He looked up. "So... What happened?"
Jason said nothing, still looking up.
"Jason?" Ty said, looking at Jason.
Jason waited a moment longer before looking away. "It doesn't matter really." He cleared his throat and walked back over to the fire, rifling through the bag he brought and pulling out a book.
Ty stared at him for a few seconds before he walked over tot he fire as well and sat beside him. "What's the book?" He asked, dropping the original matter.
Jason smiled lightly, not looking up. "Jane Eyre." He said. "Old-ish human literature. I can't get enough of it... Homer, Oscar Wilde, Arthur Conan Doyle, Beowulf, you name it. It's just fascinating to me."
Ty scooted closer to him. "Read some to me."
Jason looked at him, then smiled and returned to the first page before he started reading the text aloud. Ty listened to him, the only other sounds being the fire crackling, the crickets chirping, and Adam's soft breathing as he laid in the grass, out cold.
Ty, after several chapters, eventually drifted off, leaning against Jason's shoulder unconsciously. Jason stopped reading and looked at him. He smiled lightly and gently moved him so he was lying on the ground, and Jason sat beside him. He took Ty's rather old-looking iPod and turned it on.nit had a passcode. Jason hesitated, squinting at Ty for a moment before typing in four numbers. 7437. Nothing. He tried again. Still nothing. Jason looked at Ty again, before he typed in a last try. 3323. The iPod unlocked.
Jason smiled lightly and went right to his music, scrolling through until he found something slow and peaceful, turning the volume down so it wouldn't wake Ty up. Jason then put the iPod down and laid down a few feet from Ty.
The next day, the three were on the move again. "Yes there is a squid problem. It's you going over the edge because you suck." Sky pulled the poster off the wall and tossed it nonchalantly over the edge. He sighed. "This thing is way longer than I thought it would be."
"What are you gonna do, give up?" Jason asked as he reached the top of the ladder and swung over the side after Ty.
"Yep, I'm done. Sorry Ty you're on your own."
Ty snorted from out of sight. "I've been doing all the work so far anyway."
Sky rolled his eyes as he vaulted over the edge, landing on his feet on the ground. He ran to catch up with Jason and Ty, why were already halfway across the rickety old bridge. Then he stopped.
"Hang on."
"Nah if you're taking a piss over the edge you're just gonna have to catch up with us."
"No, really, wait."
"What, are your Spidey senses tingling?" Ty asked.
Sky didn't reply as he looked back the way they'd come. Ty and Jason started bickering lightly about something while Sky stayed still. Then, suddenly, someone tripped over the edge of the ladder and fell down onto the ground below. Sky blink in surprise. The boy scrambled to his feet quickly and ran out onto the bridge. "It's coming, hurry! Now!"
"What?!"
"Go!"
Sky looked at Ty and Jason, who had stopped in surprise. He looked back at the boy who was starting to get on the bridge. The old ropes began to creak against the added weight.
"No, wait!" Sky ran back, and grabbed the boy's wrist, dragging him back onto the land. Ty and Jason gasped as the bridge started to go and ran to the other side, opposite from Sky and the strange boy.
Just as they made it, the bridge collapsed and fell into the seemingly bottomless ravine, leaving no way to cross the massive gap.
"Adam!" Ty called.
Sky looked around, then sighed and looked at the boy. "What the hell was that?!"
"We can't be on this side, we have to move!" The boy said.
"Why?!" Sky snapped.
"There's a frickin' octopus! I'm not even kidding, it's huge and it was right behind-" The boy gasped as a massive tentacle reached over the edge of the ladder. Sky's eyes widened as it rose over the edge.
"That's no octopus..." He said.
Jason's eyes widened in shock as the huge squid, the size of a kraken on land, spilled over the side.
"Holy shit..." Ty said.
The squid let out a gargley growl, then a loud roar. Sky held as it slammed down a tentacle and he dove to one side after shoving the boy to the other, separating them.
Another huge tentacle headed at Sky and he just barely managed to dodge it.
"Fight it off!" Ty yelled.
"I can't!" Sky gasped as yet another came at him and he had to literally bend over backwards to avoid being shoved over the edge of the cliff. "Bodil took all our weapons!"
Jason snarled and looked around.
"We gotta do something!" Ty said.
"I know, I know!" Jason turned to the tunnel behind them and ran in. "Aha!" He said.
"What?" Ty asked peering after him just in time to see Jason pulling an old-looking sword out of a skeleton's chest.
"Wow, that's disgusting." Ty said.
Jason ignored him as he took off his back pack and knelt next to it, opening a hatch on the back. "I hope you're all happy, I'm using my damn final project to save you morons..." He muttered.
Ty just watched him in confusion as he worked on his backpack, turning it into something else.
"Who the hell are you?!" The boy shouted to Sky as he hid behind a rock.
"I could ask you the same thing!" Sky replied a bit harshly.
He leapt over a tentacle, but it tripped him, and he fell hard on his back.
"Adam!" He heard a shout, and looked up.
Across the ravine, Jason slammed a few switches up and pushed a button on the side of the backpack, and the bottom burst into flames like a rocket. Ty jumped and his eyes widened in shock. "What the-"
"Adam, duck!" Jason snapped.
Sky yelped and quickly did as he said as the jet pack soared over his head and got stuck to the wall by something. Sky stood and drew closer, and saw that it had a sword inside that had its tip buried in the dirt. Sky's eyes widened and he reached forward to pull it out when suddenly, a tentacle grabbed his ankle and dragged him back.
"Damnit, Adam, you had one job!" Ty shouted.
"Oh, shut up Ellis!" Sky replied as he resisted in vain. The boy watched behind the rock with wide eyes as Sky was raised up by his foot. The boy raised a camera over the edge and took a picture, eyes still locked on the squid.
Ty noticed the flash and noticed the boy. "Hey you!"
The boy looked at Ty.
"Grab that sword and toss it to Adam!"
The boy's eyes widened.
"He's your only chance at survival unless you can fight!" Ty said.
The boy's face was pale as he looked at Sky, then at the sword. He swallowed and ran out from behind the rock, awkwardly shoving his camera into his messenger bag. He ran behind the squid as it moved to the edge of the cliff, holding Sky over the ravine.
"Sky!" The boy shouted as he yanked the sword clumsily out of the dirt wall. Sky looked in the direction of the voice and reached out quickly, just in time to catch the old sword by its hilt. He swung it up immediately and cut off the squid's tentacle. The squid roared in pain and fell back a few steps as Sky fell down, just barely managing to grab the edge of the cliff with one hand. He sheathed the sword and quickly pulled himself up now with both hands.
As he was crouched on solid ground, preparing to stand, the squid roared in anger and threw down another tentacle. Sky gasped and rolled out of the way just in time. He pulled out his sword as he stood and ran forward, cutting a massive gash in the huge squid's side. It roared yet again and as he was aiming another blow, shoved him back. Sky stumbled back and was just starting to regain his balance when the ground behind him gave way. He waved his arms around frantically as he tried to keep his footing in vain. He fell backwards over the edge with a yelp.
"Adam!" Ty shouted out and ran to the edge, Jason grabbing his arm to keep him from falling into the ravine as well.
The squid let out a roar of triumph, but the roar grew glitched and robotic, then cut off and everything in the land suddenly disappeared, so it was only the four people trapped in the realm and pure white as far as the eye could see.
