Eight: Bodil and the Map
"Alright, so where's the base where they're holding you?" Jason asked.
"I don't actually know." Ty replied, rubbing the back of his head. "They knocked me out so I don't know."
"Oh great, so what now?" I sighed. "We could scour the entire globe and then discover its underground somewhere."
"Look, let's just play it by ear." Jason said. "We'll figure it out as we go."
"Okay, fine." I hesitated, then sighed. "Which way should we even go?"
Ty groaned. "See this is why I'm coming with you idiots."
Jason rolled his eyes. "Whatever, just be glad we're saving your sorry ass at all."
Ty smirked lightly, and looked away.
We all grew quiet for a few minutes, then I looked at Ty. "What d'you think mom would think if she knew we were doing this shit?"
Ty laughed. "Write a column about it."
I snorted. "Yeah, you're probably right..."
Jason looked between us in confusion. "You guys brothers o-"
He was cut off sharply as the ground suddenly fell out beneath him like rotting wood.
I gasped. "Jason!" Then the ground under me collapsed as well. And before I could hit any ground or wall or anything, everything just blacked out, like nothing at all was there. No wind, no light nothing. I wasn't unconscious, I could move and speak and everything. I wasn't falling, but there was no light, or sound, or ground beneath my feet. What was this, space? No no, I could breathe.
What the hell just happened? We were just walking along in a grassland and suddenly this went zero to sixty in five seconds.
"Ty?" I called. "Jason?"
My voice echoed through the darkness, but there was no answer.
"Anybody?" I asked. Still nothing.
I glanced around, still unable to see. I took a step forward cautiously, pulling my sword out of its sheath and gripping it tightly. As soon as I put my foot down in front of me, there was a loud buzzing sound and everything around me bugged out in bursts of neon pink and green like a computer glitch. I yelped and covered my ears as loud electronic noises filled the space.
What the hell is this?! Is this literally hell or something?!
"If you could stop moving, that would be nice. I'm still trying to calibrate the map."
I looked up in surprise at the sudden new voice. "Who's that?"
"You'll see in a moment, dumb human..."
I hesitated, waiting for something to happen as I looked around. Then, suddenly, the ground lit up beneath me. It spread out like lights on a floor, going everywhere. It made trees and birds and flowers and everything like the world above. I looked around in confusion. "What is this?" I asked.
"This is a game." Suddenly, there was a solid voice behind me, hinted with an accent. I turned around and blinked in surprise. Standing in front of me, a few meters away, was a rather short man. He couldn't be much older than me by the look of him. He had black hair and wore sunglasses over his eyes like me. He smiled rather brightly. "Hello."
I blinked. "...Hi. Uh... Where on earth are we?"
He laughed, and his laugh was funny and infectious. "We're not on earth, my friend."
I stared at him. "...So... What planet...?"
He shook his head. "We're not on a planet. We're not in any universe. I've brought you to a separate realm. A different plane of reality."
"...Uh huh..."
He looked away, around the area that had formed into existence. "I sorta assumed you were the leader of your group. They seemed to like following you. And considering you're training to be a leader, it wouldn't be a bad idea for you to lead your group, would it?" He laughed lightly. "Anyways... I know what you're looking for, and I can take you there. But I want something from you first."
"What?" Sky asked.
"I'm bored." He looked at mr. "I'm going to give you a path to the base where your friend is being held. All you have to do is travel it, and that's it. Basically all I'm going to do is watch and have something to do for a while."
Honestly, I didn't see much of a downside. We needed a way to get there and this was it. I nodded. "Yeah, sure."
The man smirked. "Let's get started then."
"Wait, wait. What's your name? What side are you on?"
The man looked at me. "My name? Martin. But you can call me Bodil." He looked away. "As for me side, I don't like wars. I'm not on a side." He smiled lightly again. "Good luck, Sky." He said, then disappeared like a chameleon into the surroundings.
A moment later, everything around me changed into a differed landscape.
"Adam!"
"Oh hey, look!" I turned and saw Jason and Ty running over to me.
I sighed in relief. "Oh good, you're alive." I walked to meet them in the middle. "Okay, good news."
Ty blinked. "What?"
"I got us a way to the base. But we gotta follow a specific path."
"Sure, what path?" Jason asked.
"Um.... Well I don't know quite where it is yet, but..." I looked around. There was only grassland for miles and miles, as far as the eye could see. All there was except that was a well. I glanced back and Jason and Ty, who shrugged. "There is obviously magic involved."
I looked at the well again.
"...I think Ty should go look in it." Jason said.
"What? Why me?"
"There could be something dangerous in there!"
"So you want me to die?!"
"...You are a HOLOGRAM."
"Oh right..." Ty crept over to the well and peered inside. "Whoa, holy shit." He looked back at me. "I think we're supposed to jump."
"I dunno if that's a good idea." I said.
Ty shook his head. "Nah, I'm going for it." He fell back into the well without another word."
I sighed. "If he's dead I'm gonna kill him." I walked over to the well and peered into the well curiously. There was no water, just black below, like an abyss. Jason hopped onto the edge beside me and I looked at him. I looked into the well again, then back at him.
I smirked and pushed him forwards. He yelped before falling ungracefully into the dark. I took a deep breath and jumped in after him, still holding tightly to my sword.
As I watched, a blue dog grew bigger and bigger below me and I gasped in alarm as I suddenly fell into a water way with a loud splash. I swam to the surface as fast as I could and coughed as I reached the air. I was in what looked like another well.
"Oh dude..."
"Adam, come look at this!"
I sighed and reached up, grabbing the edge of the well and pulling my way out. I yelped as I flopped over the edge and onto the ground. As I stood up and looked around. I froze. "Holy shit..."
In the sky were all sorts of floating islands and some fireworks going up as if nothing had been above us in the first place. Everything else seemed unrealistically.... Majestic maybe? Whatever it was, Jason was losing his shit.
"How is this even possible?!"
"Dude calm down."
"Don't tell me to calm down, the laws of physics have literally broken down! Why don't we just travel through time now?! You know what, screw it, someday I'm gonna pick out a genius apprentice and he's gonna learn how to travel through time, I'm doing it, screw everything!"
I walked over to an egg that for some reason was randomly on the ground. "Hey. Hey Jason. Jason." I said.
He looked at me. "What?!"
I threw the egg at him.
He just stood there silently as it hit his helmet. All three of us were just quiet. Jason reached up and brushed it off. "What was thE POINT."
Ty cleared his throat. "So like, maybe we should actually start moving so we can do what we're supposed to do."
I snorted. "You're basically saving yourself here."
"No kidding." Ty smirked lightly, then headed down a cave be its entrance. Jason and I followed him closely after exchanging glances. Ty turned round the corner ahead of us and gasped in surprise. "Whoa!" He looked at me as I ran around the corner as well. He was standing on a ledge apart from the one Jason and I were on. "Look, it's beautiful!" He stepped on a pressure plate, and sparks shot out like fireworks.
I smiled lightly. "Well that's not quite foreboding is it?" I asked.
Ty didn't reply as he jumped to the other side and yelped. Then there was an explosion. I jumped. "Ty?!" I jumped over to the ledge, then to the other side of the gap. As I did, I only just made it, holding on by my arms. I glanced below to see another black abyss, but this one seemed somehow less inviting. I pulled myself up with a heave and stood up as Jason leapt onto the other edge somewhat ungracefully beside me. A few feet away, Ty was pressing himself against the cave wall, eyes wide. "...Okay." He said. "So you know those things that explode?"
"...Creepers?"
"Yeah yeah, the green bastards. There's a whole bunch of them here, but they're yellow."
"Oh brilliant." I rolled my eyes and continued walking. The cave opened up into a wooden ledge, going around the edge of the outside of the cave until it went onto the ground. And led down a road. I turned around, walking backwards so I was facing Ty and Jason. "Whatever, there can't be too many of them, can the-"
I turned my head, my eyes widening as I heard a hiss. As I heard the explosion I yelped and fell over the fence backwards, flopping onto the dirt below with a thud.
"Okay, so uh... I was wrong..."
Jason sighed. "You moron, Ty quick!"
Ty ran quickly to the railing and vaulted over the edge, landing solidly beside me as I stood. I looked at him incredulously. "Where'd you learn to do that?!"
Ty shot a smirk in my direction. "Dead Army, remember?"
Before I could answer, Jason leapt onto the railing and jumped off just before the yellow creatures could start to explode. He jumped over top of us, turning on his jet pack momentarily to break his fall as he landed, stumbling lightly. He beamed. "Holy shit, it actually worked!"
Then we heard the hissing again and I jumped. "Hurry up!" I started running along the green path, Jason and Ty following me. I found myself at a ledge a second later. Floating ledges one after the other spanned the distance from that to the other side. Below were a bunch of squids swimming in water. Literal squids, not the ones that try to kill us. The slimy animal ones that can't hold weapons and are altogether rather harmless.
I wrinkled my nose in confusion. "Just... Why?"
Ty glanced over his shoulder. "No idea!" He leapt the gap easily between the grass and the first ledge and speedily moved on to the second. Jason took a deep breath and followed. I groaned as I too went after Ty, just barely making the gaps every time. I was still better at parkour than Jason though. Most people were.
Upon finally making it to the other side, I saw Jason was leaning against the wall, sitting down to catch his breath. Ty had flopped onto the ground as he did the same. I gestured for them to follow as I started to run for the next obstacle. "Come on!" I said.
Jason shook his head. "Adam, I don't think that's a good idea." I looked at him in confusion and he continued. "Ty's soul has been split in half. That's tiring. But that paired with a lot of running is exhausting. We need to pace ourselves here."
Ty got up slowly. "I could make it..." He said tiredly.
I shook my head. "No... Jason's right. We have to do what Void would do here, we have to be careful." I glanced at the sky. It was about sunset, we would've had to stop soon anyways. "We'll set up camp here." I walked off into the trees nearby to get firewood as Ty and Jason exchanged glances.
