Twenty three

Maggie sat in one of the carriers hovering over the Wakandan ground as the team rode towards the end of the dome for the fight. Natasha was holding her hand tightly, with Steve and Bucky behind them. Rhodey was flying above them with Sam, while Bruce was parading around in the metal hulk costume he had.

T'Challa and Okoye were in another carrier with the Wakandan tribe leaders.

"How we looking, Bruce?" Natasha asked Bruce. Bruce laughed over comms as he jumped over the carriers.

"Yeah, I think I'm getting the hang of it. Wow! It's like being the Hulk without actually-" Bruce cut himself off as he fell flat on his face. He got back onto his feet quickly. "I'm okay. I'm okay," he said.

"I got two heat signatures breaking through the tree line," Rhodey said.

The carriers touched down and everyone quickly climbed off, running ahead to join the ranks of soldiers already gathered. Maggie, Natasha, Steve and T'Challa walked ahead to the end of the dome to the two aliens at the dome. One was the same female one, but there was a new male one.

"Where's your other friend?" Natasha asked.

"You will pay for his life with yours. Thanos will have that stone," the woman alien said.

"That's not gonna happen," Steve shook his head.

"You are in Wakanda now. Thanos will have nothing but dust and blood," T'Challa said.

"We have blood to spare," the woman said.

She held up her sword with a snarl and the buildings behind her started raising their outer walls to let their alien soldiers out.

Maggie, Natasha, T'Challa and Steve hurried back to the massed forces.

"Did they surrender?" Bucky said.

"Oh, yeah. We're having a tea party to celebrate on the lawn," Maggie said sarcastically.

"Yibambe!" T'Challa yelled, holding his spear up.

"Yibambe!" the Wakandans yelled in response.

Maggie pulled her baton out and twirled it in her arms before splitting it back into two.

The lady alien dropped her sword and they watched as mountains of aliens raced out of the trees towards them.

"What the hell?" Bucky muttered.

"I think we pissed her off," Natasha said.

"No shit, Sherlock," Maggie muttered.

The Outriders raced towards the force field and started piling up as they tried to break through. If any broke through, they died within seconds.

"They're killing themselves," Okoye whispered in horror.

As a few Outriders squeezed through, still intact, the Border Tribe took a knee to raise their holographic shields. The Kingsguard behind them leveled their spears over their shoulders and waited for T'Challa.

He nodded once and they started firing at the aliens. Bruce used the Hulkbuster's hand repulsors, Bucky used his M-249 machine gun and Maggie fired with her pistols, using slight hints of her powers to make sure they hit their marks.

Sam and Rhodey swooped around above them, taking them out from up high.

Rhodey dropped bombs down over the heaviest concentration of Outriders and they exploded, killing most of them in their path.

"Guys, they're circling the perimeter," Maggie said quickly.

"Cap, if these things circle the perimeter and get in behind us... there's nothing between them and Vision," Bruce said.

"Then we better keep 'em in front of us," Steve sighed.

"How do we do that?" Okoye asked T'Challa.

"We open the barrier," he said, putting the comms to his mouth. "On my signal, open North-West Section Seventeen," he said.

"Requesting confirmation, my King. You said open the barrier?" a voice came.

"On my signal," T'Challa nodded.

"This will be the end of Wakanda," M'Baku said to Okoye.

"Then it will be the noblest ending in history," Okoye said.

Maggie lifted her chin in agreement, getting herself ready to attack.

T'Challa stepped in front of them, not taking his eyes off the barrier. He crossed his arms in the Wakandan salute and Maggie remembered being thirteen and watching King T'Chaka teach her, Shuri and T'Challa the right and proudest way to do it.

"Wakanda forever!" T'Challa shouted.

He started running and everybody followed, brandishing their weapons.

"Now!" T'Challa shouted into comms.

The section of the dome opened and Maggie took a deep breath, preparing herself for the fight ahead. She had to survive.

She had to survive for Natasha, for Wanda, for Steve and Tony and Thor and all of the other Avengers. She had to survive for Yelena, Melina and Alexei. She had to survive for Johann, Katerina, Claudia and Andreas.

She had to survive for herself.

"How much longer, Shuri?" Maggie shouted into comms, knocking two aliens back at once as she electrocuted them from either end with her baton.

"We've barely begun, Magdalena," Shuri said.

"You might want to pick up the pace," T'Challa joined the conversation.

"Like, really pick it up," Maggie muttered, sliding between an alien's legs to avoid it eating her head off. She stabbed it down and turned to fight another. "I'd rather be fighting robots right now," she added.

"Fuck!" Maggie cried, falling to the ground as three Outriders tackled her to the floor.

She used her baton to knock one back but more just joined the pile forming on top of her.

"There's too many of them!" Bruce yelled into comms, before being taken down, too.

Maggie concentrated her energy into the baton and used it to smack the Outriders back enough to stop them from ripping her throat out. She pulled out her gun and quickly fired at them, but the bullets did little to deter them.

Maggie screamed as a bright light burned in her eyes. The Outriders attacking her turned at the intrusion and were quickly knocked out by a massive ax.

It swung around the Outriders that had managed to tackle most of the Avengers and Wakandan leaders down, and then landed in a familiar hand. The beam cut out and Maggie grinned as she got to her feet.

Thor, with a tree and a raccoon with a gun.

"Still not the strangest thing I've ever seen," Maggie grinned.

"Hahaha!" Bruce laughed loudly. "You guys are so screwed now!" he yelled.

"Bring me Thanos!" Thor yelled, charging at the Outriders with the tree and the raccoon.

They watched as he leapt into the air, lightning bouncing off his chest. His eyes glowed white as he landed, his ax banging on the ground. The lightning channeled through the ax and burnt the Outriders around them all to a crisp.

Maggie laughed as she put her gun away and grabbed her batons again.

"Yelena would kill to be here, mama," she said into comms.

"Damn right she would, malyshka," Natasha chuckled, the forces charging at the fresh wave of Outriders again.

"Mighty Maggie!" Thor beamed at Maggie as he used his new ax to send five Outriders away from her. She laughed and hurried over, hugging him quickly.

"Love the haircut," she said.

"Thank you!" Thor grinned. "I like your scar. You look very badass," he said.

"Oh, this?" Maggie hummed as she touched the scar through her lips. "Last year, car accident caused by fighting some human robot thing in Budapest," Maggie said.

"Sounds exciting," Thor said. He turned and motioned to the raccoon and the tree he was fighting with. "These are my friends, Tree and Rabbit," he said.

Maggie snorted as the raccoon snarled at Thor.

"I am Groot," the tree cried, sticking it's arm through four Outriders.

"Oh, that's so cool!" Maggie said. "I'm Maggie Romanoff," she said.

"You know, maybe we should get back to fighting instead of catching up," Natasha called as she took out another Outrider.

"Mama's orders," Maggie shrugged, turning back to fight.

"Is she still as scary as I remember?" Thor muttered to Maggie.

"Scarier," Maggie pat his arm reassuringly. "A lot scarier," she said.

"Holy shit, guys!" Maggie yelled into comms as she turned to look outside of the dome again.

There was a thundering noise and the trees were falling. As it reached the end of the trees, it looked like something enormous was trying to break free from the ground. Large Threshers, motorized spike wheels, easily broke through the dome and headed towards the battlefield.

"Fall back! Fall back now!" T'Challa yelled.

Maggie ran backwards away from the Thrashers, using her baton to tackle Outriders in her way. She wanted to save her powers so Wanda could destroy Vision's stone but she figured she might have to use them if she didn't want everyone she cared about to die now that Sam and Rhodey seemed unable to find a weakspot from above.

"Maggie!" Natasha yelled. Maggie turned and winced.

Natasha, Maggie and Okoye were in direct line of the Threshers.

"Fuck, okay," Maggie muttered.

She held her arms up, focusing on pushing them back. It slowed them down but the weight of all of them combined was too much for Maggie alone.

So, she supposed she wasn't really surprised when Wanda floated to the ground beside her. She took Maggie's hand and Maggie felt the surge of electricity run through them as they both used their powers.

The Thrashers were stopped by a red mist, floating up in the air. Maggie looked over her shoulder and saw Outriders were racing towards them.

"Behind us," Maggie said.

"Got it," Wanda said.

The two of them dropped the Thrashers at an angle, sending them skidding across the grass. They took out the Outriders behind them and Maggie grinned, squeezing Wanda's hand as she looked to make sure Natasha and Okoye were okay.

Natasha was smiling proudly at them, while Okoye looked amazed.

"Why was she up there all this time?" Okoye asked.

"For Vision," Maggie said. "How's it going?" she asked.

"Better than out here, I suppose," Wanda said.

"Look out!" Thor yelled. They turned, seeing more Outriders racing towards them through the holes that the Thrashers had created.

"Fucking fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck," Maggie cried, grabbing her batons and turning them into one again. She ran forward at one of the Outriders and knocked it back with a swift hit.

"Guys, we got a Vision situation here," Sam said over comms.

"Somebody get to Vision!" Steve said.

"I got him!" Bruce said over comms, running backwards and then using the flying stimulation in the Hulkbuster suit.

"On my way," Wanda's voice came over comms.

Maggie heard a thud and turned, seeing the lady alien had knocked Wanda down into a ditch.

"Oh, no. Not my girlfriend," Maggie muttered, starting to run over, but Natasha was faster.

"He'll die alone, as will you," the lady alien said.

Maggie and Natasha stood behind her, while Okoye moved to stand in front of her.

"She's not alone," Natasha said. The lady alien looked at them, jaw clenching.

Okoye spun her spear around, Maggie doing the same with her batons. Natasha put hers together into one and the lady alien grabbed hers.

The lady alien jumped at Natasha, who blocked her staff with a bang that sounded like a fuse blowing. Maggie delivered a quick kick to her side, stepping out of the way so that Okoye could hit her with her spear.

Maggie knelt quickly beside Wanda and helped her to her feet.

"Get to Vision," Maggie said.

"Come with me," Wanda squeezed her hand.

"No. I'm gonna stay. Go. I'll see you in a minute," Maggie kissed her before turning back towards the fight.

"Duck!" Wanda shouted, pulling Maggie back down into the ditch. The sky above them went dark and Maggie looked up when it was light again.

Another Thresher had still been moving around.

The alien took the distraction to kick Natasha in the face, sending her to the ground. She grabbed Okoye and tossed her across the ground like she was nothing. Maggie clenched the baton in her hands as she stood up, glaring at the alien.

"Hey, bitch! Get away from my family," she said.

The alien came at her and Maggie split her baton into two, using them to block her sword. She knocked it out of her hands and kicked her in the stomach, spinning on one foot to deliver another kick to her head. Yelena had taught her that one a few weeks ago over Facetime.

Maggie's legs fell out from under her and she groaned, landing on the hard dirt as the alien grabbed a long blade. Maggie brought her batons up, blocking the knife before it could cut her head off.

Wanda quickly took the chance to use her magic and lift the alien up into the air. She was caught in the Thrasher and promptly crushed, leaving blue blood splattered on Maggie and Natasha's faces as the only remaining factor of her.

"That was really gross," Natasha winced, wiping her face.

"Yeah," Maggie muttered, wiping the blood off her cheeks. "I prefer human blood over alien blood, but no blood is better. Fighting robots is clearly superior to humans and aliens," she said.

"Maybe we worry about fighting robots when we're not fighting aliens," Natasha said. "Get to Vision, destroy his stone," she said.

"On it," Wanda grabbed Maggie's hand and they quickly flew up in the air.

"Are you okay?!" Maggie and Wanda dropped on the ground in the forest in front of Vision, slumped on the floor. He winced in pain.

"What? What is it?" Wanda asked, grabbing his face to feel if it was the stone.

"He's here," Vision whispered.

The wind around them picked up and Maggie knew they were probably going to die today. So, she did what she always did when there was chaos. She became calm.

"Okay, guys, this Thanos guy is here. Vision can feel him. It's time for us to destroy the stone. It's time for you to give us time to do it," Maggie said.

"We'll handle it, little Romanoff," Steve said over comms.

Maggie looked at Wanda and Vision, seeing Wanda crying as Vision tried to talk her into destroying the stone.

"Thanks," Maggie said. She knelt back down in front of Vision beside Wanda.

"It's not fair. It shouldn't be you two, but it is," Vision said. Wanda intertwined her fingers with Maggie's and Maggie saw her eyes turn red in the reflection of them on Vision's metal suit. "It's alright. You could never hurt me," Vision said.

Wanda and Maggie extended shaking hands, their combined energy starting to beam at the Mind Stone. Maggie looked over their shoulder to make sure they were still safe.

Thanos was a purple alien thing with a weird beard face thing. Maggie didn't even know how to describe it. What she did know, however, was that he was knocking the Avengers down like flies. Rhodey, Bucky and Okoye were on the floor, while Natasha was trapped in a stone-cage. Groot was groaning against a tree trunk.

Maggie lifted hers and Wanda's conjoined hands to try and speed it up.

Steve joined the fight next, but Steve was quickly knocked out and thrown away.

"Maggie," Wanda whispered, terror in her voice.

Maggie quickly turned so her free hand was pointing at Thanos. Red mist shot out of her palms from Wanda and their combined energy managed to build a forcefield strong enough to seriously slow Thanos down.

"It's alright. It's alright," Vision mumbled. Maggie looked quickly at him and saw that the Mind Stone was starting to crack.

She watched as it shattered completely, yellow energy shaking the trees around them for miles. Maggie and Wanda let their hands drop and Wanda completely curled into Maggie's chest, sobbing openly for her dead best friend.

"I understand, my child. Better than anyone," Thanos said quietly as he approached them.

"You could never," Wanda snarled up at him. Maggie's face was set in a glare and her hands pulled the baton from her belt. She was ready to fight if she had to.

"Today, I lost more than you can know. But now is no time to mourn. Now... is no time at all," Thanos said. He clenched his fist and Maggie felt her stomach drop as yellow light started to form into the Mind Stone again.

"No!" Maggie tried to jump at him, but he quickly knocked her away from Wanda and Vision.

Wanda lunged for Vision but Thanos threw her beside Maggie. He picked Vision up by the throat, watching his eyes widen before prying the Stone out of his head. Vision went limp and colourless in his grip and he threw him aside.

Thanos moved the stone over the last empty setting on his gauntlet and dropped it in. Thanos bellowed loudly as bright lights shone all around them, the group of Infinity Stones now combined for the first time in a very, very long time.

Thanos studied the gauntlet, but a massive lightning bolt struck him as Thor dropped down and tackled him back.

Maggie and Wanda took the chance to crawl over to Vision. He was definitely dead and Wanda's cries picked up again.

"No!" Thor roared.

Maggie turned to see a white light coming from Thanos' hand. He had snapped his finger.

"No," Maggie whispered, face draining of colour. Wanda wrapped her arms around Maggie, crying into her neck.

"Magdalena," Wanda cried. Maggie kissed her temple, her own tears streaming down her cheeks.

"He did it," Maggie whispered.

She could feel Wanda getting lighter around her and she pulled back, mouth dropping as she saw Wanda's legs started to disappear and turn into ash.

"Wanda, no," Maggie whispered. "Wanda, don't you dare!" she cried.

Wanda looked up with tearful eyes, cupping Maggie's cheeks with shaking hands.

"I didn't want to say it like this, but I need you to know it before I go," Wanda whispered. "I love you, sweetheart," she said.

Maggie wrapped her arms around Wanda, cradling her as she continued to turn to ash right in her arms.

"I love you more," Maggie cried. "I'll wait for you, okay? I promise. But you have to come back. Promise me you'll try and come back," Maggie mumbled.

Wanda gave her one last kiss before she disappeared completely. Maggie's arms dropped now Wanda wasn't in them and she felt her chest constrict painfully.

She forced herself to her feet, though. She had to find out who else had been snapped away.

"Mama!" she called, voice shaking. Her hands were fidgeting with the red woolen bracelet around her wrist, now one of the only things she had of Wanda left.

"Maggie?!" Natasha shouted back.

Maggie heard footsteps and she turned, seeing Natasha running towards her.

"Mama," Maggie burst into more tears, crashing into Natasha's arms. "Wanda's gone and he killed Vision and he snapped and they're gone," Maggie sobbed.

Natasha hid her own tears in Maggie's hair as she cradled her daughter, kissing her forehead to try and calm her down, but they knew it was useless.

"Who else?" Maggie whispered.

"Let's go and find out," Natasha swallowed roughly.

The two Romanoffs walked through the woods until they saw where the other surviving Avengers were gathered.

Okoye was there, but T'Challa wasn't. The raccoon was there, but Groot wasn't. Steve was there, but Bucky wasn't. Rhodey was there, but Sam wasn't. Bruce was there, too, but that was it for their group.

Maggie didn't even know if Tony was still alive, as he'd been missing for like, a week now with aliens. She hadn't spoken to Peter Parker in three weeks and the last time was just because he wanted her opinion on which Lego set to build. She had no idea if Pepper was alive, or if Yelena, Melina, Alexei, Johann, Claudia, Katerina and Andreas had survived the snap.

"Where's Wanda?" Bruce said. Maggie looked up slowly, tears in her eyes again.

"Gone," Maggie whispered.

Her phone vibrated loudly against her hip and she jumped in surprise. She pulled it out and sighed. Katerina was calling her. It was either just to check in, or someone had disappeared.

"Kat?" Maggie put the phone to her ear, stepping away to compose herself.

"Auntie Maggie?" Andreas said quietly into the phone. Maggie's stomach dropped instantly.

"Andreas? Where's Kat? Where's mommy and daddy?" she said.

"Auntie Kat's crying. Mommy and daddy are gone. They were here and now they aren't. Where are mommy and daddy?" Andreas whispered.

"Andreas, put Kat on the phone, please," Maggie said. She heard shuffling and then she could hear Katerina crying.

"Maggie? What the hell is going on?" Katerina cried.

"Half of the universe has been destroyed by a titan with six powerful stones. Jo and Claudia are gone?" Maggie said.

"They disappeared right in front of me," Katerina cried.

"I'm coming to get you. Pack your shit. Andreas', too," Maggie said.

"Where are we going to go?" Katerina said.

"You're going to come home with me. I can keep you safe," Maggie sighed. "I'll be there soon. Promise," she said.

She ended the call and turned to Natasha.

"Johann and Claudia are gone. Katerina's on her own with Andreas. I told them to come and stay with us. You should, uh, call Yelena and check in that everyone's okay," Maggie said.

"Maggie," Natasha held up her phone with tears in her eyes.

"No," Maggie shook her head slowly. "All of them?" she whispered.

"Just Yelena," Natasha mumbled.

She tucked her phone in her pocket and wrapped an arm around Maggie's shoulder.

"Let's go and get Kat and Andreas, hey?" she said.

The two of them walked away from the others in silence.

"I said we made it, but I don't think we did," Maggie mumbled. Natasha sighed and kissed her temple.

"Me either, malyshka. I don't think we made it, either," she said.
