Twenty seven
Maggie's feet touched the floor and she quickly looked around.
"Did we get them all?" Bruce said eagerly.
Bruce, Nebula, Scott, Tony, Steve, Thor, Rocket, Clint and Natasha.
"Are you telling me this'll actually work?" Rhodey said. Maggie frowned when she saw who was missing.
"Mama, where's Kat?" she said.
Nobody answered. Maggie looked between Natasha and Clint, seeing how Clint's jaw tensed and Natasha looked down so nobody would see her cry.
"Where is she?" Maggie said, voice slightly louder.
"I'm sorry, Maggie," Clint said quietly. "She made the decision. A soul for a soul. We tried to do it but she wouldn't let us," he said.
"But..." Maggie trailed off as she thought of her niece, probably playing peacefully with Andreas upstairs. "But what about Valie?" she said.
"She wants her to stay with you and me, and Wanda when she gets back. She wants Wanda to show her all of the good memories when she meets Valie," Natasha said quietly.
Maggie stumbled back off the platform, tugging her uniform off.
"Magpie-" Tony tried to take her hand.
"Get off me!" Maggie cried, pulling herself out of his grasp.
"Leave her, Tony. Please," Natasha said quietly.
Maggie kicked her suit away and hurried out of the lab, jogging upstairs to get to Valie.
"Valentina?" Maggie called as she got onto the kid's floor. "Valie?!" she shouted.
"Aunt Mags?" Valie wandered out of the playroom, Andreas behind her.
"Maggie? What happened?" Andreas said, noticing the distressed look on Maggie's face. "Did someone die?" Andreas asked.
"I need to talk to you two," Maggie said, taking their hands.
Maggie led Valie and Andreas into the living room and sat them on the couch, kneeling in front of them.
"Maggie?" Andreas said.
"Guys, I need to tell you something bad and it's gonna be sad to hear, but it's gonna be okay, because we're working on making everything better," she said.
"Is it Kat?" Andreas said.
"My mama?" Valie perked up. Tears filled in Maggie's eyes and she rubbed them away quickly.
"It is Kat," Andreas whispered, tears in his own eyes.
"I'm sorry. Valie, baby, your mommy had to go away like uncle Johann and aunt Claudia did, like aunt Wanda did," Maggie said gently.
"When will she be back?" Valie asked.
"I don't think she will be back," Maggie tucked her blonde hair behind her ears, watching as her eyes filled up with tears.
"But I miss her," Valie whispered.
"I know. I miss her, too," Maggie pulled Valie onto her lap, letting her sob into her neck. She sat beside Andreas on the couch and pulled him into her side.
"Did you get them? The stones?" Andreas whispered.
"We got them," Maggie nodded.
"Can't we bring her back with them? Like we can bring my mom and dad and Wanda back?" Andreas said.
"No. That's not like this," Maggie kissed his forehead. "I wish it was. I really, really wish it was," she said.
"When my mom and dad come back, am I staying with you like Valie is?" Andreas mumbled.
"Well, I think we'll have to talk about that with your mom and dad but, yeah, I think you guys could stay with us still. We'll stay together, maybe get a real house instead of living in the compound," Maggie said.
"Wanna stay here," Valie mumbled. "Stay here with mama," she whispered.
"I know," Maggie kissed her forehead, closing her eyes so they wouldn't see her cry. "I want mama to be here, too," she whispered.
"How'd they take it?" Steve asked as Maggie joined them in the lab a few hours later. Natasha wrapped Maggie into a hug as she got close enough and Maggie leaned tiredly against her chest.
"They both fell asleep in my room. Cried all afternoon, wouldn't eat, but they're asleep and they'll be too exhausted to wake up for a while," Maggie mumbled.
"I'm sorry, malyshka. We tried to stop her," Natasha whispered.
"People die every day. We have the stones. We have to bring who we can back. We owe it to Kat to do it," Maggie said.
"Good thing you're here, then, Mighty Maggie," Thor said. "Banner was just about to snap everybody back into existence," he said.
"Good to go, yeah?" Tony asked Bruce as he got ready to put the gauntlet on.
"Let's do it," Bruce nodded.
"You remember– everyone Thanos snapped away five years ago and just bringing them back to now, today. Don't change anything from the last five years," Tony said.
"Got it," Bruce said.
Everyone formed a circle around Bruce, gearing up in case things went wrong. Maggie held her batons in her hand in front of herself and Natasha.
"Friday, do me a favor and activate Barn Door Protocol. Will you?" Tony said.
"Yes, boss," Friday said. They heard the thuds of the facility going on lockdown.
"Everybody comes home," Bruce said.
He put the gauntlet on, which robotically expanded to fit his hand. The stones lit up brightly as he clenched his fist, the power surge making him groan loudly in pain.
"Take it off, take it off," Thor panicked.
"No, wait. Bruce, are you okay?" Steve said quickly.
"Talk to me, Banner," Tony said.
"I'm okay. I'm okay," Bruce panted, sitting up more with the gauntlet still burning brightly.
Thor gave him an awkward thumbs up.
Bruce screamed as the pain intensified through his arm. He managed to snap his fingers and then collapsed onto the floor, the gauntlet sliding off his arm. Clint booted it away and they quickly crowded around Bruce.
"Bruce!" Steve said.
"Don't move him," Tony said, using his suit to shoot water over Bruce's burnt arm.
"Did it work?" Bruce mumbled.
"Worth a shot. It's over. It's okay," Thor mumbled.
Maggie's phone vibrated in her pocket and she pulled it out, smiling when she saw it was Johann.
She put the phone to her ear quickly.
"Jo?!" she said.
"Maggie?! Where the hell are Katerina and Andreas?!" Claudia cried into the phone.
"Oh, I'm so glad you're back," Maggie whispered, covering her face as she started to cry. "They're with me. Something happened five years ago. You were snapped out of existence. Look, we're in America. I'll send a jet for you two, alright?" Maggie said.
"Guys!" Scott yelled.
Maggie looked up in time to see blue beams of light coming towards the facility. Maggie dropped her phone and turned, running so she could get Andreas and Valie to safety before they were blown up.
"Maggie!" Natasha yelled after her, ducking down as the facility started to explode around them.
"Maggie? Where are we?" Andreas groaned as Maggie carried him and Valie onto one of the surviving quinjets. She lay them both on the seats and strapped them in, tightening the straps so they wouldn't fall out.
She'd, luckily, found them uninjured in her old room. The ceiling had caved in, but nothing had landed on top of them and they were absolutely fine, except for their emotional health. Maggie had no idea how the hell they didn't die, if she was honest, but she liked to think that maybe Kat was keeping an eye on them, protecting them from wherever she was now.
"You're okay. You're going to Russia, okay? Your mom and dad are back at your old place waiting for you. I'll come and get you guys when this is all over. You're gonna have to explain to them as best as you can, okay, and I'll fill in the gaps when I get back," Maggie said, quickly putting the coordinates in the jet.
"They're back?" Andreas said quickly.
"They're back. But something is happening here so you two need to go and be safe with them. I'll be back soon," Maggie promised, kissing their foreheads.
"With Wanda?" Andreas said.
"And Nat?" Valie mumbled, sliding her thumb into her mouth.
"With Wanda and Nat. Be safe. I love you two," Maggie said. "You'll be there soon. Sleep, okay? The jet will wake you up when you get there," she said.
"Okay," they mumbled. Maggie kissed their foreheads again and then hurried outside, using the control panel outside to send the jet off.
She waited until it was out of sight before looking back at the burning and destroyed Avengers facility. She nodded to herself, wiping the blood off her forehead where she'd been cut in the blast.
"Time to fight," she said.
"It's about time you joined us!" Steve yelled as Maggie skidded to a stop beside him, Thor, Tony and Natasha, who were fighting Thanos.
"Sorry I have kids to take care of," Maggie snarked, putting her baton together.
"Can you feel her?" Natasha said.
"No," Maggie shook her head. "But I can use my magic anyway. It just won't be easy to control," Maggie said.
"At this point," Tony sighed as he observed the destroyed Avengers facility, "We need all of the help we can get, Magpie, including uncontrollable magic," he said.
"As you wish," Maggie said.
She put her batons back in their holders and held her hands in front of her, forcing herself to concentrate on the rubble surrounding Thanos. She started shaking as it rose into the air, vibrating with the lack of control.
"I hate this," Maggie muttered, launching the rubble at Thanos. He quickly knocked some away with his massive sword but Maggie forced more rubble up and at him. "Oh, I'm not winning this war alone. Get in there!" Maggie cried.
"Sorry!" the other four yelped, hurrying over to fight Thanos while Maggie tried to keep crushing Thanos.
Maggie grunted as Thanos booted her away across the rubble. She landed in a pile of dust with a grimace, head pounding with a feeling she hadn't felt in five years.
Someone was in her head.
"Magdalena?" a soft voice whispered.
Maggie rubbed her eyes and blinked ahead. She was imagining it. Wanda wasn't back. She wasn't here.
She watched as Steve used Thor's hammer to try and take Thanos down, but he was quickly launched away, too. His shield was almost broken and the hammer was halfway across the battlefield.
"Magdalena?" the voice came again.
Maggie groaned as she struggled to her feet.
"Not the time to be imagining things. Really not the time, Maggie. Stop it," Maggie muttered to herself.
"Hey," Natasha grabbed her as she stumbled over, helping her regain balance.
"In all my years of conquest– violence– slaughter– It was never personal. But I'll tell you now– what I'm about to do to your stubborn, annoying little planet– I'm gonna enjoy it. Very, very much," Thanos drawled as he stared at Maggie, Natasha and Steve.
"You know, you're a total dick," Maggie said bluntly. Thanos laughed as he raised his arms.
Maggie watched as Thanos' army floated to the battlefield. It consisted of Children of Thanos, Chitauri, Sakaarans, Outriders and Chitauri Gorillas. Steve stumbled to his feet and Maggie handed him his broken shield.
"Cap, you read me?" a voice came over comms. Maggie, Steve and Natasha looked around. "Cap, it's Sam. Can you hear me?" he said.
"Guys," Maggie whispered.
A large yellow portal was growing behind them.
"Magdalena," the whisper came again.
"Wanda?" Maggie looked around eagerly.
"On your left," Sam's voice said.
They all turned to the left.
Okoye, Shuri and T'Challa stepped out of the portal, ready for a fight. The Wakandan forces followed them, with Sam swooping through the portal and flying around. More portals started appearing, people coming to join their army.
Doctor Strange appeared, with Drax, Mantis, Star Lord and Spiderman. Valkyrie and the Asgardians came, then Wong and the Masters of the Mystic Arts. Maggie caught sight of Bucky, Groot, a Wasp (?) and Pepper Potts, clad in her own iron suit.
"Hey, sweetheart," a voice came from behind Maggie. She turned slowly, staring with wide eyes at Wanda Maximoff in front of her. "Missed me?" Wanda smiled.
Maggie stared at her before stepping forward slowly.
"Are you really here?" Maggie whispered. Wanda stepped forward and put one hand on Maggie's cheek. She brushed her thumb across the soft skin and smiled.
"I'm really here," Wanda said. She pulled Maggie into a kiss and Maggie relaxed for the first time in five years, tangling her fingers in Wanda's hair.
"While this is really adorable and emotional, we're fighting a war," Natasha's voice came from behind them. Wanda broke away with a laugh.
"Is she still a cockblock?" she said.
"It's been five years without you. No. She hasn't had to cockblock me once," Maggie rolled her eyes, pulling Wanda into another kiss.
"You waited for me?" Wanda smiled.
"I told you I would. I love you, remember," Maggie rolled her eyes.
"Avengers!" Steve yelled.
Maggie turned back to face Thanos, Wanda grabbing her hand. She felt the familiar surge of electricity in her veins and she grinned as objects around them started levitating. It felt so natural, so in control, so normal and exciting and it was all because of Wanda.
"Assemble!" Steve shouted.
Thor let out a loud battle cry, as did T'Challa, and they all charged forward to fight. The two forces met in the middle and Maggie grinned as hers and Wanda's combined powers took a large group of Chitauri soldiers out.
"I missed this," Wanda grinned.
"You have no idea," Maggie grinned back.
"Cap, what do you want me to do with this damn thing?" Clint yelled over comms.
"Get those stones as far away as possible!" Steve said.
"No! We need to get them back where they came from," Bruce said.
"No way to get them back. Thanos destroyed the quantum tunnel," Tony said.
"Hold on!" Scott said. "That wasn't our only time machine," he said.
They heard La Cucaracha playing across the battlefield and Maggie snorted, making Wanda look at her with wide eyes.
"Time machines?" she said.
"I'll explain later. Promise," Maggie said.
"Anyone see an ugly, brown van up there?" Steve said.
"Yes! But you're not gonna like where it's parked!" Valkyrie said.
"Scott, how long you need to get that thing working?" Tony said.
"Maybe ten minutes," Scott said.
"Get it started. We'll get the stones to you," Steve said.
"We're on it, Cap," Hope's voice came over comms and Maggie looked at Wanda.
"What?" she said. Wanda had been staring at her for a few seconds. "Wanda, what?" she said.
"Katerina," Wanda said slowly. "She's gone," she said.
Maggie looked away quickly.
"Yeah. She's gone," Maggie said.
"She died for us to fix this," Wanda said.
"Yeah," Maggie said.
"And her daughter..." Wanda trailed off.
"Valentina Joanna Romanoff. Kat changed her name before Valie was born and Valie's Romanoff now, too," Maggie said.
"She wanted her to stay with us?" Wanda asked.
"If we survive," Maggie nodded.
"Well, we better survive then," Wanda said quietly, tangling her fingers with Maggie's.
"Yeah. We better," Maggie sighed, running her free hand through her hair.
"Look!" Maggie pointed across the battlefield.
T'Challa was holding the gauntlet and running away from Thanos while Thanos chased him.
"Let's go," Wanda said, lifting her and Maggie off the floor. She landed them in front of Thanos, blocking him from going after T'Challa.
Maggie felt burning rage flourish inside of her, for Vision, for Katerina, Wanda, Yelena, for Bucky, Sam, Groot, everyone who had disappeared in the snap or died to change the past. It was all because of Thanos and she wanted to make him pay.
"You took everything from us," Wanda said, voice angry as red mist spurred from both hers and Maggie's hands.
"I don't even know who you are," Thanos scoffed.
"You will," Maggie said.
She and Wanda used their combined powers to pick up some debris, pushing it down on Thanos. He used his sword to try and block it. He swung the sword at them, knocking Wanda away from Maggie.
Maggie fell backwards onto the floor, holding her arms out so the red mist still coming from her palms would stop the sword from slicing her in half.
She felt Wanda's energy join hers and she grinned, pushing the sword back until she was on her feet facing Thanos.
"Rain fire!" Thanos yelled.
"But sire, our troops," a Squidward looking alien called back.
"Just do it!" Thanos shouted.
A spaceship appeared above them, firing at the heroes. Maggie felt herself be tackled and she blinked wearily at whoever had done it.
It was Wanda and a red shield was protecting them and the rest of their forces from the bullets.
"Uh, is anyone else seeing this?" Pepper's voice came over comms.
Maggie followed the sound of her voice until she saw one of the cannons had hit a dam. Water was starting to flood into the battlefield.
"I'm on it," Doctor Strange said over comms.
Maggie looked back at Wanda, the two of them getting to their feet.
"Come on," Maggie tangled their fingers together again. "We can't let him win," she said.
"No, we can't," Wanda agreed.
"What the hell is this?!" Sam cried over comms. Maggie and Wanda looked up. The ship was firing at the sky, now.
"Friday, what are they firing at?" Tony said.
"Something just entered the upper atmosphere," Friday said.
There was a bright light of thundering energy that came surging down as Carol Danvers flew through the ship. The ship exploded as she exited it, crashing into the lake hard enough to shake the floor under their feet.
"Oh, yeah!" Rocket whooped over comms.
"Danvers, we need an assist here," Steve said.
"She's cool," Wanda whispered.
"She's a badass. Let's go," Maggie laughed, dragging Wanda back to the fight so they could help get the gauntlet to Scott and Hope.
They landed in front of Peter with Carol and Valkyrie. Peter handed the gauntlet to Carol.
"I don't know how you're gonna get it through all that," Peter eyed the battle still going on ahead of them.
"Don't worry," Wanda said.
"She's got help," Okoye appeared next to Maggie with a smile.
Pepper landed beside Okoye with Natasha, followed by Mantis, Shuri, the Wasp, Gamora and Nebula.
Maggie smiled at the women and turned, looking ahead at the war they had to win.
"You ready?" she said.
"We're ready," the women chorused.
Carol took off into the air with the gauntlet. Valkyrie got back on her Pegasus and flew alongside her. Wanda and Maggie took the other side, while Pepper covered above her. Nebula, Gamora, Natasha, Mantis, Okoye, Shuri and Hope took the ground underneath them.
Thanos caught sight of them flying towards the van and started racing towards them. Pepper, Shuri and Hope blasted him back easily. Carol flew above him and he followed her gaze to the van. He launched his sword at the van and Maggie's stomach dropped as the van and the Quantum Realm tunnel were destroyed.
Carol was launched backwards and dropped the gauntlet, it falling to the ground. Maggie and Wanda were flicked off in another direction, Maggie landing about twenty feet from Wanda with a pile of rubble falling on top of her.
Maggie groaned under the weight of the bricks.
"So not fun," Maggie groaned exhaustedly.
She started kicking the rubble off herself and eased herself to her feet. She blinked a few times to make sure she was actually seeing what the hell Thanos was doing.
He had the gauntlet on his fist, with Tony hunched on the floor across from him.
"I am inevitable," Thanos said.
He snapped his fingers but nothing happened. Maggie frowned when she saw the infinity stones were missing.
"And I... am... Ironman," Tony croaked. Maggie's gaze snapped to him.
He had the infinity stones in his own gauntlet, body coursing with gamma radiation.
Tony snapped his fingers and there was a blinding flash of white that sent Maggie right back down onto the floor.
She quickly struggled back to her feet, watching as Thanos' army started disappearing around them like theirs had five years ago. She looked and watched as Thanos disappeared, too.
"Oh," Maggie whispered, a weird feeling burning in her chest. "It's over," she whispered.
"Not yet," Wanda's voice came from behind her and Maggie knew Wanda had made her way to Maggie as soon as she'd been able to.
Wanda intertwined their fingers and pulled Maggie over to where Tony was slumped on the floor.
Peter and Rhodey were with him, trying to talk to Tony.
Maggie knelt in front of him, his eyes falling to hers with a weak smile.
"Magpie," he mumbled.
"Hey, uncle Tony," Maggie smiled tearfully, squeezing his hand. "Pepper's coming, alright? So hold on until she gets here," she said.
"You're a great kid, you know? A great kid. Valie is lucky to have you as a role mode," he said slowly.
"Morgan has me, too, alright? I promise. Valie and Morgan are gonna grow up and remember the sacrifices their parents made to save the world," Maggie whispered.
She heard the thuds of Pepper landing and she stood up, moving back so Pepper could take her place.
A set of arms wrapped around her and she leaned back, feeling two bodies instead of one. She looked behind her. Natasha was holding Wanda and Maggie. Wanda was crying silently, head resting on Natasha's shoulder, while Natasha watched Tony and Pepper talk with tears in her eyes.
Maggie looked back in time to see Tony's arc reactor fade completely to darkness. Pepper started crying on his shoulder and the rest of them knelt in front of Tony, honouring his sacrifice and all of the other sacrifices made to defeat Thanos, once and for all.
