Eleven

Maggie rubbed her eyes tiredly as she, Natasha and Clint waited for Steve to find Dr. Cho in her lab in Korea. They were in the Quinjet while Steve had taken the building.

Dr. Cho's voice came over comms.

"He's uploading himself into the body," she said.

"Where?" Steve's voice joined hers.

"The real power is inside the Cradle. The gem, its power is uncontainable. You can't just blow it up. You have to get the Cradle to Stark," Cho said.

"First I have to find it," Steve said.

"Go," Cho nodded.

"Did you guys copy that?" Steve said.

"We did," Clint said.

"I got a private jet taking off, across town, no manifest. That could be him," Maggie looked up from the Quinjet tablet she was using.

"Sounds like it is," Natasha agreed.

"There. It's a truck from the lab. Right above you, Cap. On the loop by the bridge. It's them. I got three with the Cradle, one in the cab. I could take out the driver," Clint said, narrowing the jet towards the truck speeding away from them.

"Negative! If that truck crashes, the gem could level the city. We need to draw out Ultron," Steve's voice came. Maggie looked out of the window to see Steve jumping on the back of the truck.

Steve got blasted off the truck when he tried to open the door. Maggie winced as he crashed into another car.

"Well, he's definitely unhappy! I'm gonna try and keep him that way," Steve grunted.

"You're not a match for him, Cap," Clint said.

"Thanks, Barton," Steve huffed.

"Okay, you two, suit up," Clint looked back at Natasha and Maggie.

"Let's go," Maggie nodded.

"We got a window. Four, three... give 'em hell," Clint said over comms.

Maggie and Natasha dropped out of the Quinjet on motorbikes, speeding up the road towards the truck where Steve and Ultron were still fighting. Natasha was steering her motorbike herself, while Maggie was using her telekinesis to control hers.

Natasha reached down and caught Steve's shield, throwing it to Maggie. They'd decided Natasha would deal with the cradle while Maggie helped Steve fight Ultron.

"I'm always picking up after you boys," Natasha said sarcastically.

"They're heading under the overpass, I've got no shot," Clint said into comms.

"Which way?" Maggie asked, eyes darting around for their next move.

"Hard right... Now," Clint said.

Maggie and Natasha took sharp rights. Natasha sped through the traffic, but Maggie's terrible sense of direction had her almost launched onto the top of a car's hood.

"Sorry!" Maggie yelled, speeding off after Natasha.

She caught up to the truck as Natasha threw Steve's shield up at him. Maggie kept control of her motorbike as she slowly got to her feet, standing on the seat.

"You ready, Steve?" Maggie said, getting her arm out ready.

"Ready when you are, little Romanoff," Steve said.

"Now," Maggie said. She jumped up into the air and Steve grabbed her arm.

He swung her up and her body, sideways in the air, hit Ultron back. He skidded to the roof of the driver's part of the truck and Maggie let go of Steve's arm, landing on one knee beside him with one hand to support her.

"That's how you do it," Clint whooped over comms.

"What the hell?!" Ultron groaned moodily, throwing another jet of yellow light at Steve's head.

Steve blocked it with his shield, unintentionally sending it in Maggie's direction as she moved to get a better vantage point to fight Ultron.

Maggie stared at the jet of light with wide eyes. She held her hands out in front of her, already scolding herself for not ducking instead because she was gonna die now.

"Stupid way to die," Maggie muttered.

She opened her eyes when she didn't feel the usual pang she got when she was almost near death. She was holding the beam just in front of her hands with her powers. Steve and Ultron were both staring at her.

"Well, that's something," Ultron said.

"It really is," Steve panted.

"Yeah," Maggie agreed.

She took a deep breath and then pushed her hands forward at Ultron. The jet knocked him off of the truck and into a train speeding alongside them.

"That was easy," Maggie shrugged at Steve, grabbing onto his arm so they could keep fighting him.

"That was cool," Steve said, jumping with Maggie onto the train.

"The package is airborne. I have a clean shot," Clint's voice came over comms.

"Negative. I am still in the truck," Natasha's joined his now.

Maggie ducked as Ultron shot a blast of yellow light at her.

"Fuck, man, watch my hair! I got a haircut two goddamn weeks ago," Maggie cried.

Steve hit Ultron with his shield and Ultron flew backwards into Maggie's way. She extended a leg and kicked him back towards Steve.

"It's like playing metal football," Maggie said.

Ultron turned in the air and flew at Maggie, grabbing her and flying with her towards the end of the train. The two flew through most of the train doors, all of the glass shattering against her skin.

Maggie closed her eyes tightly as she went, shielding her face with her arms. Finally, her body slammed against a door but it didn't smash. Maggie opened her eyes and saw a blue blur had pulled Ultron off of her and now red mist was forcing two metal luggage racks to block him off. Steve was behind Ultron, a frown on his face.

"Please. Don't do this," Ultron said.

Maggie recognised who the blue and red people were when she saw Wanda Maximoff look back at her briefly. Maggie felt her heart leap in her chest, the same weird tingling feeling she got around the scepter flooding in her veins.

Wanda's eyes widened but she turned back to Ultron.

"What choice do we have?" Wanda said, Sokovian accent ringing thick. Maggie's knees may have accidentally gone weak.

Ultron stared at her before flying out of the train window.

"Now who's dramatic?" Maggie muttered.

"Maggie?!" Steve yelled.

"I'm good!" Maggie yelled back, getting to her feet so Steve could see.

"I lost him! He's headed your way!" Steve said into comms, quickly stepping into the control room to see if they could stop the train.

"Cap, Mag, you see Nat?!" Clint's voice came over comms.

"What?!" Maggie said loudly.

"If you have the package, get it to Stark! Go!" Steve shouted.

"Do you have eyes on Nat?!" Clint said.

"Go!" Steve yelled.

"Clint?!" Maggie said into her comms, making Wanda and Pietro Maximoff's attention snap to her. "Where the hell is she?" she said.

"I don't know," Clint said quietly.

"Maggie," Steve shot her a look that said he knew she was terrified, he was too, but they would die if they didn't get their shit together right now.

"Yeah," Maggie nodded at him to say she was shutting off her emotions to finish this thing.

"Civilians in our path," Steve told Pietro. He sped off. Steve turned to Maggie and Wanda. "You two, stop this thing," he said.

Maggie knelt on the floor of the train and placed her hands flat so the train's wheels would absorb the full power of energy. She closed her eyes and concentrated on slowing the train down.

After a few seconds of straining, it suddenly felt a lot lighter. Maggie opened her eyes and looked at Wanda. She was pointing her hands at the floor of the train, red mist helping to slow the train down.

The familiar tingling feeling was back in Maggie's stomach and, though Wanda would never have told Maggie at this moment because Maggie probably hated her, she felt it, too.

The train juddered to a stop and Maggie forced her gaze away from Wanda's. She stood up and stormed off the train, putting her finger to her ear to make sure her comms was still on.

"Does anybody know where mom went?" she said quietly.

"I'm gonna say this once," Steve said as he, Maggie and the Maximoff twins stepped into the lab where Tony and Bruce were trying to upload Jarvis into Ultron's Vision.

Maggie frowned slightly as the tingling feeling in her veins increased. It had been around since she'd seen Wanda and Pietro but it was more pronounced in this room, with the Vision. It was slightly worrying Maggie, so she forced herself to ignore it all. What she didn't know couldn't hurt her.

"How about nonce?" Tony said.

"That means something completely different to what you meant," Maggie said offhandedly, sitting down in one of Tony's spinning chairs.

"Shut it down!" Steve said.

"Nope, not gonna happen," Tony shrugged.

"You don't know what you're doing," Steve said.

"And you do? She's not in your head?" Bruce nodded at Wanda. Maggie raised an eyebrow.

That was a good point. Some part of Maggie wanted to believe that the witch was making Maggie think Tony would go as far as to upload Jarvis into Ultron's vision. But, as Maggie realised, that part of her seemed to be incredibly stupid because it was Anthony Howard Stark. Of course he would do something like that.

"I know you're angry," Wanda said.

"Oh, we're way past that. I could choke the life out of you and never change a shade," Bruce said.

"Banner, after everything that's happened-" Steve said.

"That's nothing compared to what's coming!" Tony yelled.

"You don't know what's in there!" Wanda said.

"This isn't a game-" Steve said.

"The creature-" Wanda started.

Pietro darted around the room in a blue blur. He held up the plug to the machine.

"No, no. Go on. You were saying?" Pietro said.

A bullet flew through the glass under Pietro's feet and he dropped down a floor.

"Pietro!" Wanda yelled, jumping towards the glass.

"What? You didn't see that coming?" Clint's voice came from underneath them.

"I'm rerouting the upload," Tony said.

Steve threw his shield towards Tony and Tony held out his hand. His Ironman hand came flying into the room and caught the shield, sending it launching across the room. Maggie ducked as it skimmed over her head.

"Sorry, Magpie!" Tony called.

He shot a blast of light at Steve and the rest of his suit formed around him. Steve was launched back and Wanda jumped forward, but Bruce grabbed her.

"Go ahead, piss me off," Bruce hissed.

Maggie sighed as she got to her feet.

"You are all children," Maggie said, using her powers to deflect Steve's shield away from Tony. She used them again to deflect Tony's jet of light away from Steve.

There was a loud bang as Thor jumped into the room. He landed atop of the cradle and pointed his hammer up. The room cracked with lightning and Maggie ducked down to avoid it.

The tingling feeling in her veins was spreading rapidly and she could feel something inside of her getting stronger, like a weird force of energy channeling her powers.

"Wait!" Bruce yelled, but Thor slammed his hammer down onto the cradle.

They all stared at the cradle with wide eyes. The glass shattered and Thor was lurched back onto the floor as a red robot thing landed on the end of the cradle, a yellow gem glowing brightly in it's forehead.

"What the fuck?" Maggie whispered, getting to her feet again.

The creature straightened up as it examined it's body curiously. It looked up and saw Thor. The room was still for a second before the creature launched itself at Thor.

Thor grabbed him and launched him towards the windows looking out to NYC in Tony's living room. The creature caught itself before it smashed through the window, examining itself in the glass.

"Okay, I'm out. This is too weird," Maggie said, holding her hands up with a frown.

"Come on, mighty Maggie," Thor sighed, putting a hand on her shoulder as he led her out towards the Vision.

Maggie's chest panged at the nickname as she remembered Thor calling out for mighty Maggie before he died.

She could feel Wanda staring at her as the rest of them following Maggie and Thor. All Maggie could feel then was anger. Wanda had been the one to make Maggie see Thor dying. She was the one who made Maggie see her entire family dead, who made Maggie believe that they knew she was the monster Dimitri created.

"Are you alright?" Thor said quietly.

He had noticed the quick flash of emotions on the young girl's face and he had a feeling it was to do with the Maximoff girl, who was still staring at the back of Maggie's head with wide eyes. He also figured it was probably to do with the fact that Natasha was missing, or that they'd set what could very be the all time world record of creating two murderbots in less than two weeks.

"Yeah," Maggie said, equally as quietly.

"Worried about your mother?" Thor said. Maggie nodded. "She's a fighter, mighty Maggie, just like you. We'll get her back, soon," he said.

"I know," Maggie said softly. She didn't want to get into her feelings.

"I'm sorry, that was...odd. Thank you," Vision thanked Thor as they all gathered around him.

"Thor, you helped create this?" Steve said.

"I've had a vision. A whirlpool that sucks in all hope of life and at its center is that," Thor pointed at the gem in Vision's head.

"What, the gem?" Bruce said.

"It's the Mind Stone. It's one of the six Infinity Stones, the greatest power in the universe, unparalleled in its destructive capabilities," Thor explained.

"Then why would you bring it to-" Steve started.

"Because Stark is right," Thor said.

"Oh, it's definitely the end times," Bruce sighed.

"Right," Maggie agreed.

"The Avengers cannot defeat Ultron," Thor said.

"Not alone," Vision said.

"Why does your Vision sound like Jarvis?" Steve asked.

"We reconfigured Jarvis' matrix to create something new," Tony said.

"I think I've had my fill of new," Steve said flatly.

"You think I'm a child of Ultron?" Vision said.

"You're not?" Steve asked.

"I'm not Ultron. I'm not Jarvis. I am... I am," Vision said.

"Are we speaking in riddles?" Maggie frowned.

"I looked in your head and saw annihilation," Wanda looked at Vision.

"Look again," Vision said.

"Yeah, her seal of approval means jack to me," Clint snorted.

"Agreed," Maggie chimed. She ignored the sad gaze Wanda gave her. "Can I ask a question?" she said.

"Sure, Magpie," Tony nodded.

"Why do I feel a weird tingly thing while I'm around Vision and the Maximoffs?" Maggie said. Tony looked slowly to Thor for help.

"Their powers, the horrors in our heads, Ultron himself, they all came from the Mind Stone," Thor said. He looked at Maggie. "Your father injected you when you saw him. You found a vial in the HYDRA base. It's the same thing he injected you with," Thor said.

"So, I got injected with some special chemicals and now I'm connected to an Infinity Stone? Surely this is bullshit," Maggie frowned.

"Not special chemicals," Tony said, his and Bruce's eyes meeting. "We told you that the vial was being charged by the scepter. The mind stone came from Loki's scepter. When you were injected with the liquid, you were being charged by the stone," he said.

"You're all connected to the stone, now, and what it's created is nothing compared to what it can unleash. But with it on our side-" Thor said.

"Is it? Are you? On our side?" Steve turned to Vision.

"I don't think it's that simple," Vision said.

"Well, it better get real simple real soon," Clint said.

"I am on the side of life. Ultron isn't. He will end it all," Vision said.

"Oh, and now we gotta deal with the pro-lifers," Maggie groaned into her hands. "Surely there's been enough crazy American bullshit for one day," she whispered.

"What's he waiting for?" Tony said, ignoring Maggie's whining.

"You," Vision said.

"Shocker," Maggie said.

"Where?" Bruce said.

"Sokovia. He's got Nat there, too," Clint said. Maggie's eyes snapped to his and he nodded. Maggie sighed in relief.

"If we're wrong about you, if you're the monster that Ultron made you to be..." Bruce trailed off, leaving his threat towards Vision hanging in the air.

"What will you do?" Vision said. He looked around all of them. "I don't want to kill Ultron. He's unique, and he's in pain. But that pain will roll over the earth, so he must be destroyed. Every form he's built, every trace of his presence on the net, we have to act now. And not one of us can do it without the others. Maybe I am a monster. I don't think I'd know if I were one. I'm not what you are, and not what you intended. So there may be no way to make you trust me. But we need to go," Vision said.

Vision grabbed Thor's hammer and shoved it into his hand. They all watched, gobsmacked, as Vision strutted off to get ready for the fight ahead.

"Right," Thor nodded. He pat Tony's shoulder. "Well done," he said.

"Three minutes. Get what you need," Steve said.

Maggie took off quickly to go to Natasha's room. If she was going into a fight without Natasha at her side, she sure as hell wasn't going without wearing Natasha's lucky leather jacket to protect her.

"Ultron knows we're coming. Odds are we'll be riding into heavy fire, and that's what we signed up for. But the people of Sokovia, they didn't. So our priority is getting them out," Steve said as the team, Vision and the Maximoff twins flew in the Quinjet to Sokovia.

Maggie was sat in the front beside Clint to fly the jet, just so she could get them as close to Nat as possible. Bruce would be getting her out. Tony and Vision would be confronting Ultron. The rest of them were clearing the city.

"All they want is to live their lives in peace, and that's not going to happen today. But we can do our best to protect them. And we can get the job done, and find out what Ultron's been building. We find Romanoff, and we clear the field. Keep the fight between us. Ultron thinks we're monsters and we're what's wrong with the world. This isn't just about beating him. It's about whether he's right," Steve said.

Maggie visibly stiffened at the words and Steve's face dropped as he realised what he'd said. He'd known Maggie struggled with believing she wasn't a monster, especially now with someone like Ultron running around that she had, inadvertently, had a hand in creating.

Maggie felt the eyes of the Maximoff twins burning into the back of her head. She kept her eyes ahead, ignoring the heavy feeling in her chest and stomach.

"Hey," Clint said softly, putting his hand over the microphone of his headset so nobody else would hear them. "It's gonna work out, kid," he said.

"Maybe," Maggie muttered. "But maybe not," she said.
