"Has anyone got eyes on Maggie?!" Natasha yelled into her comms as Fury flew the helicopter around the sky.

"I don't see her," Sam panted into his comms. He was fighting Rumlow on the 41st floor.

"Steve?!" Natasha yelled.

Steve was sprawled on the last Helicarrier, gunshot wound to the abdomen. The Helicarrier was burning around him and he could see Bucky stuck under a large metal pipe.

He looked down through the glass, noticing two bodies falling from the other Helicarrier.

"Steve?!" Natasha yelled again.

"Look down," Steve panted, struggling to his feet to save Bucky.

"Natasha," Fury trailed off as he saw the two bodies descending towards the floor.

Natasha looked down with a grimace. She grabbed a backpack with a parachute in and put one of her arms through it. She pulled off her headphones.

"Follow me down. We're gonna need you when I get her," Natasha said.

She jumped out the side of the helicopter, descending down towards Maggie and the man she had been fighting.

Her daughter was in danger and Natasha had to save her.

Dimitri latched on to Maggie as they fell, wrapping his arms around her neck to strangle her. Maggie spat more blood into the air as her stomach flipped again. She had never been one for flying, or falling through the air. She didn't know anyone who actually liked doing this, because she definitely didn't.

"Nobody is coming to save you, princess," Dimitri smirked at her.

Maggie's eyes caught sight of Natasha, falling towards them with her arm outstretched to grab Maggie. Maggie smirked as she looked back at Dimitri. Her hands grabbed one of the knives in her belt and she pulled it up, stabbing it into the side of his neck.

Blood spilt from his skin and down her hand. His grip loosened around Maggie and she gave her father one last look.

"You were my family once, but I found a new one. They're saving me," Maggie said.

"I'm your father," Dimitri gasped.

"You stopped being my father the day you took me from my mom," Maggie said. She pushed Dimitri's hands off of her and he let go at the same moment that Natasha slammed into Maggie.

Maggie watched Dimitri fall as Natasha got the backpack on her and deployed the parachute. Dimitri fell out of sight and Maggie looked at Natasha.

"You saved me," Maggie said breathlessly.

"I told you. You're family and I love you," Natasha said.

"Then this might be a good time to tell you that he shot me and I'm feeling pretty shitty right about now," Maggie winced.

"Fury?" Natasha said.

"Under you. Get ready," Fury said, turning the helicopter on the side.

When they were close enough to drop in, Natasha unbuckled the parachute and they dropped into the helicopter.

She strapped Maggie into one of the seats beside Sam, grabbing her headphones again to talk to Fury.

"We gotta land. She needs a hospital," Natasha said.

"On it," Fury said. Sam put his hand over the bleeding hole in her stomach to try and keep her from bleeding out.

Maggie swallowed the blood in her mouth and ignored the pounding in her head. She looked at Natasha and smiled slightly.

"Hey, Nat?" she said.

"Yeah, Mags?" Natasha looked at her as she knelt down to temporarily pack her wound.

"I love you, too," Maggie said quietly.

Maggie managed to see Natasha's wide smile for a few seconds before the pain got too much for her. Her eyes fell shut.

Everything went dark.

"What did he say to her? Over comms?" Natasha asked Sam as the two of them, Maria and Fury waited for both Maggie and Steve to get out of surgery.

"He said he was her father, he'd raised her better than this. He said he was building an army but she ruined it. He said he killed her mother," Sam said slowly.

Natasha put her head in her hands.

"She has to make it, Sam. They both have to make it," Natasha whispered. Sam put a hand on her shoulder.

"They will," Sam said.

"Family of Magdalena Romanoff?" a doctor stepped into the room.

Natasha jumped to her feet.

"That's me. I'm her mom," she said. She had adopted Maggie to allow her to stay in America, so she didn't feel too guilty about saying it right after she'd found out that Maggie's biological mother had been murdered by her father. Families were complicated nowadays.

"Magdalena is out of surgery. We successfully removed the bullet and it didn't hit any vital organs. We had to remove her appendix but she should be back on her feet and to her usual level of mobility within a month," he said.

"Can I see her?" Natasha said.

"Follow me," the doctor nodded.

Natasha followed him down the hallway and into the hospital room where Maggie was.

"She'll be coming out of the anesthetic in a few hours. She will likely be in pain, so tell her to press the red button on her IV and it'll automatically give her a dose of morphine," the doctor said.

"Thank you," Natasha said.

He left and Natasha sat on the chair beside Maggie's bed, taking in the sight of her.

Maggie was sixteen, barely, but she looked younger than Natasha had ever seen her. She was pale but colour was coming back to her cheeks. Her eyes were shut and her hair was still in the braids Natasha had done, just messy now. Her hands were flat by her side.

Natasha took one and intertwined their fingers. She squeezed Maggie's hand.

"Don't you die on me, kid. That's not how this works," Natasha said quietly.

She leaned back in the chair and closed her eyes, putting her feet on the end of Maggie's bed so she could rest until Maggie woke up.

"I figured she'd want some food when she woke up," Sam stood in the doorway with his arms piled high with crisps, chocolates, pudding cups and a few sandwiches for Maggie to pick from.

"Maggie doesn't like sandwiches," Natasha shrugged.

"Who doesn't like sandwiches?" Sam dumped the food on the empty chair.

"Maggie doesn't," Natasha said. She didn't know why. Maggie just really hated sandwiches.

"Move the food," Steve sighed, walking slowly into the room with his IV trolley. Sam moved it off the chair and Steve sat down, looking at Maggie.

"How is she?" Sam asked.

"She's okay," Natasha said. "Hasn't woken up yet, but that's not surprising," Natasha said.

"It's not?" Sam said.

"She doesn't have the best sleeping schedule. She's probably catching up while she can," Steve said.

"She was," Maggie muttered, blinking a few times to gain her bearings. "But you idiots are really, really loud," she said.

"Mags," Natasha said, leaning forward. She cupped Maggie's cheeks and Maggie smiled tiredly at her.

"Hey, Nat," she said.

"I got so worried," Natasha whispered. She hugged Maggie carefully, pressing repeated kisses to her forehead.

"I'm fine," Maggie laughed, wincing when she realised it hurt her. "Oh, okay, maybe I'm a bit sore, but I'm mostly fine. Did we do it?" she said.

"We stopped the launch, kid," Steve smiled at her.

"And Dimitri? Did anyone get him?" Maggie said.

"Nobody got the body," Sam shook his head.

"He isn't dead, then," Maggie said.

"What?" Natasha said.

"He's not dying that easily. I mean, he'll be hurt, but I hurt him worse last time and he survived. He's still alive. We just don't know where again," Maggie said.

"Are you gonna run?" Natasha said, eyebrows bunched in worry.

Maggie considered it. She could run and probably save a lot of lives in the process, or she could stay with her family and fight with them to take down what was left of HYDRA.

"No. I'm gonna stay. Family, remember?" Maggie said. Natasha smiled and hugged Maggie tighter, kissing her temple.

"Family. But you're grounded for scaring the shit out of me. You tell me you love me and then pass out. Not happening," Natasha said.

"Okay," Maggie chuckled, wincing again at the pain.

"Want some morphine?" Natasha said. Maggie nodded and Natasha pressed the red button on the IV.

"He killed my mom," Maggie said.

"He said that, yes," Natasha said.

"We could probably look it up. We don't know if it was actually true," Sam said.

"It's true, but it's not her I'm thinking about," Maggie said.

"Who are you thinking about?" Natasha said.

"My brother and sister. Johann and Katerina. Johann was eight, Katerina was six, I was four. He never mentioned them. If my mom is dead, where are they?" Maggie asked.

"Do you think he experimented on them, too?" Steve said.

"No," Maggie shook her head. "He only experimented on me. They were normal," she said. "They're either dead or he gave them to HYDRA or the Red Room," she said.

"We'll look into it," Natasha said.

"He injected me with something, too. It was blue," Maggie frowned.

"Where?" Natasha said.

"My neck," Maggie said. Natasha pulled her gown down and looked at her neck. There was a small needle mark, slightly inflamed.

"Do you know what it was?" Steve said.

"No. But when he used to inject me with stuff, it wasn't blue. It was clear," Maggie said.

"What kind of blue?" Steve said. Maggie tried to think.

"Blue, like the blue from Loki's scepter, but that isn't possible. How would he have that?" Maggie said.

"It is missing again," Steve said slowly. "HYDRA have the scepter," he said.

"But the question is," Sam said, "What the hell did they inject Maggie for? If he wanted to kill her, is it a poison? Or did he know she wouldn't die and that he wouldn't? Did he experiment on her again to give her better powers?" he said.

"I don't know," Maggie whispered, feeling her stomach sink. She really had no idea what the hell he was doing to her.

"We'll figure that out, too," Natasha said. "But, for now, you rest," she said.

"I will," Maggie nodded, leaning her head against Natasha's chest. Natasha kissed her forehead again.

"We love you, little Romanoff," Steve said.

"Love you guys, too," Maggie relented with a smile.

"You should be honored. That's about as close as he gets to saying thank you," Natasha told Steve as she and Maggie stepped over to join him at Fury's 'grave'. Sam had stepped back to give the three of them some privacy and Fury had just left.

"Not going with him?" Steve said.

"No," Natasha said. She and Maggie had made that decision together.

"Not staying here?" Steve asked.

"I blew all my covers. We gotta go figure out new ones," Natasha said, resting her chin on Maggie's head as she snaked her arms around Maggie's waist.

"That might take a while," Steve said.

"We're counting on it," Maggie said.

"That thing you asked for, I called in a few favours, had Maggie do some hacking," Natasha said, producing a file from the back of her pants. She handed it over to Steve. "Will you do us a favour?" she said.

"Call that nurse," Maggie finished for her.

"She's not a nurse," Steve said.

"And you're not a SHIELD agent," Natasha said.

"What was her name again?" Steve said.

"Sharon. She's nice," Natasha said.

She let go of Maggie and kissed Steve's cheek. Maggie stepped forward and hugged him for the first time in her life.

"Be careful, Steve. You might not want to pull too hard on that thread," Maggie said, patting Bucky's file in Steve's hands.

"Be careful yourself, little Romanoff," he said.

"Didn't you hear? She has a new name," Natasha smirked.

"No, I don't. I'm not a superhero so I don't need a stupid name," Maggie rolled her eyes.

"What is it?" Steve gave a shiteating grin to Natasha.

"Arcane," Natasha said.

"No," Maggie groaned loudly.

"Arcane. What does it mean?" Steve smiled.

"Secretive, mysterious, understood by only a few," Natasha said.

"I think it's pretty fitting," Steve said. He held out his hand and Maggie sighed, shaking it. "Pleasure to work with you, Arcane," he said.

"I may be on your side, Captain, but I will still kick your ass," Maggie said. Steve chuckled.

"I don't expect anything different from my favourite superhero," he said.

"I hate you all," Maggie said flatly, walking away from them.

Natasha laughed and followed after Maggie, tangling their fingers together and swinging their arms back and forth.

"You ready for this?" Natasha said.

"Yeah," Maggie smiled. "We're just trying to figure out what the hell Dimitri injected me with, find leads on the rest of HYDRA and the Red Room and then try and take them down without being murdered. I mean, how hard could it be?" Maggie said.

Natasha laughed again and wrapped her arms around her.

"I love you, Mags," Natasha said.

"I love you, too," Maggie smiled, letting her adoptive mother kiss her forehead.
