The Game of Fate
"Hey babe!" A familiar voice calls out as I turn around with the basketball in my hand after rolling my eyes in annoyance.
"Hey!" I say with the least enthusiasm I probably would have ever shown as we sit down on a bench outside the court. He hands me a bottle of water as his free hand lingers beside my exposed thigh. I cringe and shift uncomfortably and give him a 'wtf you doing' look. He removes his hand as I watch him from the corner of my eyes while drinking water as he scrolls through the dull cracked screen of his phone. His long fingers gracefully move on the screen hypnotizing me as I zone out staring at his slim fingers. Suddenly my phone starts buzzing in a waltz pattern and my favourite song plays 'I've got my eye on you, say yes to heaven say yes t-' I pick up the call coming from my boyfriend as I stand up with all the stuff I have and wave at my best friend mouthing a goodbye but he doesn't even look at me.
I shrug off the disappointment and rush out of my basketball club after changing. He tries to kiss me but I dodge it feeling a little down.
Suddenly my phone buzzes again indicating an incoming message. I pause on my talk and open it with a weird feeling. My hands start sweating out of the blue as I tap on the download button.
My boyfriend comes closer to me and we both intensely stare at the screen with 100 different mixed feelings.
As the photo becomes clear, my heart skips a beat when I see my boyfriend on the bed with some whore. From the corner of my eyes, I see him break into a cold sweat as he tries to deny it even after being caught red-handed...such a prick.
I slowly approach him with a poker face and whisper in his ears, "I wish your future generations all the best...Samuel Brown." I kick him hard on his balls and walk away flipping him off without looking back.
My best friend stood leaning on a wall in the same bedazzling way he always gets me to look at him every time, as I pull him by the collar making him shift his attention from his phone to me with a cold look in his beautiful blue eyes.
"It was you, wasn't it?.. The one who sent me the photo." I ask with anger laced in my words like poison as if he just cheated on me.
He tilts his face to an angle and says, "Well I couldn't just fuck around knowing that he was cheating on you and still shamelessly try to kiss you with that dirty little mouth of his!" I leave his collar with a push as his back hits the wall and turn away folding my arms. He starts scrolling on his phone again. We stand there in silence until I sigh and start speaking again.
"I know you have feelings for me." His fingers pause for a second and he looks up at me with an unbothered look plastered on his face.
"Yeah so?..."
"SO?! Why didn't you ever utter a word to me about it?!"
"BECAUSE I WAS AFRAID TO LOSE YOU!"
We both yell at each other letting go of all the years of frustration, years of keeping quiet, years of feelings...his one sided feelings.
"Let's end this friendship."
"Okay. I don't care about anything anymore."
We both part ways and never talk to each other again for 5 years. But after 5 years, when I have almost forgotten about him, I see him getting the same iced americano from the same café I used to work at. I have a meeting at the location and I am seeing the café after 7 years. It looks like it got renovated and it surely looks better than that shabby half-torn shop with a mismatched tile on the floor.
I wait for him to go before I walk inside so that we don't ever meet..like we swore to that day.
His eyes look colder than before but his habit of scrolling is still there. I unknowingly chuckle while looking at him finish his coffee exactly till the label. Suddenly he turns around and we almost make eye contact but my reflexes save me by a second as I take a peek at him and he is back to scrolling.
He stands up and leaves the shop as I let out a sigh of relief and as I turn around, he stands there....in front of me...staring and burning holes into my delicate soul....
I jump back holding my heart as my fish-like eyes stare at his cold, hooded ones.
"You know I saw you from a mile away and I can recognize you no matter how much you change....even your back." He says while leaning his shoulder on the wall.
My heart....I turn around trying to escape from his intense gaze but he pulls me by my wrist and back hugs me.
"Why are you running away? Didn't you miss me?" He says smiling against my ear.
He smiled....
It makes me smile back ear to ear, "I did...I cried a lot that day...I missed you...to death."
He giggles at my words. I tear up as he hugs me tighter and snuggles in my neck.
"That day, I promised to myself that I won't let you escape till you love me back..." I smile with tears sliding down my cheeks and turn around to kiss him but he was not there.
Suddenly, I hear tires screeching. I run towards the direction of the sound and see him....I kneel down beside his body surrounded by a pool of his own blood.
Suddenly someone taps on my shoulder from behind. It was his translucent form...his beautiful soul that I failed to protect, failed to love....
I cry hard as he crouches down beside me and says, "......but, you had already lost me...to death."
