Thirty-Six
We travel through the water for what felt like an eternity. I search for any sign of whatever was pulling me deeper, I couldn't see a single thing. It was a mere shadow with the strength of nothing I've seen before. I tried letting out another bellow of a scream before a slim black hand wraps around my throat, large enough to cover my mouth at the same time. I kick my fin, trying to hit the creature but it only helped push us further into the sea.
When we finally stopped moving, the pressure on my chest was almost unbearable. I was gasping for air, struggling to breathe through the shadows hand. A chuckle echoes from somewhere in front of me, but I can't see anything other than the outline of a person.
My eyes slowly focused, the water becoming more bearable to breathe under. Coming into sight was the person I never wanted to see again, and trailing behind her was a large bubble almost the size of a human itself. I tried lunging forward, my arms caught behind my back. My scales lay delicately in my fin. I cursed myself for not transforming into my more angry form. The shadow felt cold on my skin, nearly freezing me to the core.
"Welcome Olyvya," I knew that voice, and as soon as I heard it the anger started boiling up inside me once more. I continue to struggle, the grip only getting tighter as I did. I watch as Asada waves the shadow away, he listens, releasing his grasp on my body. I fall forward in the water, nearly collapsing into a rock on the bottom of the sea.
"Asada," I hiss looking up at the blonde demon. I show my teeth, as they had changed into sharp fangs. Asada leans forward, chuckling slightly as she stands over me. Her face contorts as she starts to morph into something completely different. Her pink scales now a dingy red covered her face, sharp teeth protruding from her snarled lips. Her eyes were filled with fire, large gills fanning from her head as she hisses back at me. The sound emanating through the water causing a tidal wave to crash over us.
"You are young, you are weak, learn that," As Asada spoke she turns back into her beautiful form. The hair flowing around her head in a perfect mess, her eyes a soft blue, her lips, and cheeks now a rosy pink.
I sat frozen staring at her for what felt like an eternity. She swam in circles around me, closing in each time she passed. The bubble still bobbing in the water, far enough away I couldn't quite make out what it is. Asada must have noticed me staring as she shot forward, clutching my face with her long claws. Her nails were sharp like razor blades, scratching the surface of my skin. Turning she motioned for the bubble to come closer, her hand dancing through the water. My breath hitched in my throat, the rock digging into my skin from the weight of her body on mine.
"For now, he is sleeping soundly, but any minute and the bubble will pop. It can only last so long at this depth," Asada's words were evil, her mind wicked. The bubble finally drew close enough to see its contents. Gage sat effortlessly sleeping in the fetal position. The bubble had captured him in what was a little underwater cocoon.
"Let him go!" I shout reaching for the bubble.
"Stop, if you wake him, and he panics, he will die." She placed her fingers to her lips, slithering around like a water snake. My heart was racing, the tears welling up in my eyes. I felt useless and helpless. I couldn't save the day.
"What do you want from me?" My voice felt broken, my head falling to the sand, the tears forming in the corner of my eyes before creating the tiny crystals.
"I want you gone. Out of the country, you are a danger to our kind," Asada swam closer to the bubble. Her long sharp fingernail getting closer to the bubble as she watched me panic. My heart pounding in my throat and I almost couldn't get the words to come out. My hands were shaking, my fin trembling, my whole body frozen with fear. Save him...save him...save him.
"Why, what did I do to deserve this?" The tears were flowing like river rapids crashing against the shore, each one forming a tiny crystal falling into the sand. The sand glistens in what little sunshine reached this depth.
"You're clumsy, you threaten to out us all. I can't have that!" Suddenly a trident appeared in her hand, shells covered the golden metal, crystals of every shape and color decorating the sharp spikes. She leans forward pressing the spikes into my throat. I glance over at the bubble one last time, the words still caught in my throat. Gage slowly shifts inside the air pocket, his eyes fluttering open before he shoots them open, his brain trying to take in everything. His arms come up beside him, flailing against the sides of the bubble. I shake my head begging for him to just close his eyes and go back to sleep. He moves his legs stretching them out to the very edge of the bubble. He is going to pop it.
"Better hurry so you can save your friend," Asada whispers, her voice soft and cynical, "you wait any longer and you both will die. There are no laws here, we are twelve miles out, this is international water. I'm not afraid." The spikes press deeper into my throat, making it harder to get the words out.
"Fine!" I shout with all the force I can muster. Asada drops the trident, down by her side before laughing one last time.
"Better hurry," she teases as the bubble pops, sending Gage flailing into the water.
