Thirteen

Sammy lined the four glasses of water on the table. Filling each one separately. I watched her every move, the book placed on the table in front of her. She took careful steps, setting the glasses up as if they were her science project. Gage leaned against the counter next to me, fiddling with his thumbs.

"What is this exactly?" Gage questions pointing to the glasses. I brought my attention to him, taking in his body language. He looked exhausted, the poor boy practically lived here last week.

"Well, this book here says after she has completed her first full transformation she should have a special ability. Something she can do with water," Sammy took a step back to revel in her setup. I roll my eyes, it was four glasses in a row all filled with the exact same amount of water. Hardly anything to feel accomplished about. She slid the first glass closer to me. "Okay, control this water."

Was that really the explanation I got? I've never been a mermaid before I wasn't sure how I was supposed to just freeze the water, or make more water appear, how does one go about learning to do something like that? I stare at the glass closest to me, watching the water as it sits motionless. Nothing.

"How?" I looked back at the red-head. Her head drooped towards the table like she was falling asleep. Shaking her head she pulled the book closer to her, reading the words for the umpteenth time.

"It doesn't say," She mumbled. "It just says that you are supposed to have some power."

"I think she is losing it," Gage interjected grabbing the last glass of water, throwing it back, gulping the water down. Sammy smacked him nearly causing him to choke.

"Hey! We needed that." Sammy glared at him, swiping the glass from his hands, refilling it quickly before setting it back down on the table. "Come on Oly, focus."

"Focus on what?" I nearly snapped, there was not enough information. This wasn't like Harry Potter where I would just wave a wand and something would happen. My face felt warm, the collar of my shirt felt itchy, and my hands were sweaty. Here I was sitting on a stool in our new kitchen trying to freeze water with my mind. "I can stare at it for hours Sammy, but if I don't know what I'm doing, then I don't know what I am doing."

Gage rushed to my side, wrapping his arm around me, his hand rubbing my hair. I nestled into his grasp, the comfort of someone, anyone calming me down. My body was tingling and the urge to run to the ocean was growing stronger.

"I don't know, I just know that you've completed a full transformation so you have to have some sort of power." Sammy folded her arms looking around the room. She quickly grabbed two of the glasses and headed for the sink. She was giving up.

"No, wait, let me try one more time," I let out a heavy sigh before taking one of the glasses in my hand. I stare at the clear liquid for a few breaths before closing my eyes. I tried my best to imagine the water as ice, frozen solid in the shape of the glass container. As my brain thought of the magic happening, my body began tingling on the inside. Like an orb of light pounding against my chest begging to be freed. The water seemed heavier now, and a gasp filled the room. I quickly opened my eyes nearly dropping the glass from how cold it was. I had done it.

"What the hell?" Gage shouted, pressing himself against the table, his eyes studying the once liquid but now a solid in front of me. I set the glass on the table, taking it in myself. I glance at my hand, tiny scales covering my fingertips. Sammy quickly took notes in her notebook.

"So I guess I can freeze water," I mumbled, my voice raspy, my breathing heavy. My heart was racing, but my body felt calm, the tingling feeling subsided.

"Okay, now do another one," Sammy pushed another glass towards me. I glanced up at her, examining her face for any signs of humor. She really wanted me to freeze another glass of water. I placed my hand on the new glass going through the motions. The water slowly bubbled before it froze completely.

---------- A Few Hours Later ----------

Glasses of frozen water scattered the kitchen counter. Sammy kept grabbing new glasses out of the cupboard until there were no more. I held the last one delicately in my hand ready to do what I've been doing all night. Sammy had the stopwatch open on her phone and she was timing me. I closed my eyes and listened for her command to begin. She pressed the screen while shouting 'Go', and I did what I was told. Focusing on the liquid I imagined it expanding into a frozen cube of water.

Gage stood next to me, his eyes watching intently as I transformed the water. My heart was racing faster this time, the tingling more dominant in my chest, I just knew this would be my fastest time yet. I felt the glass getting increasingly colder with every passing second, the glass screaming at the sudden expansion before exploding completely, the shards slicing at my skin.

"Shit!" I shouted, dropping the glass, letting it crash against the countertop. What was left of it broke into even smaller pieces sticking to the ice. My hand throbbed as glass shards stuck in the skin began to bleed.

"Olyvya let me help you." Gage rushed to my aid, a kitchen towel in his hand, blood running down his face. The glass had shattered at the sudden force spraying myself and my friends with lethal pieces. Sammy quickly grabbed a broom trying to clean the mess from the floor while Gage went to work on removing the glass from my skin.

A tear slid its way down my cheek as I bite my lip trying not to scream. The sudden pain scaring me to the core. But before the tear could fall, it transformed into a tiny crystal to be swept away with the rest of the glass.
