Fifty-Nine
"Are you guys ready for your final night as a boring human?" Sammy questions the young teens sitting around the kitchen table in Gage's dining room. "Are you finally ready to be Waveside graduates?" Sammy makes face air quotes with her hands around the word 'graduates'. The three kids nod vigorously. Stephanie, Opal and Henry would be the first to step into the world of being a mermaid.
I listen carefully sitting next to Sammy and Gage. Gage placed his hand on my thigh squeezing gently. He leans over to whisper into my ear. "I'm really glad we were able to make this work."
None of this would even be possible without his willingness to let us use his house. Maybe one day we would have enough money and people we would be able to build an actual school, but for now classes in Gage's kitchen was going to have to do.
I thought back to what had happened the last week. From all the classes the kids had taken to the swimming lessons. I glance over at Sammy, the green crystal hanging from her neck. I wanted to take everything back, to protect her from this life. I felt horrible that she had given up her normal life for me. Sacrificing herself to save me. I turned to Gage, he had done the same thing. Giving up his feet in the ocean for a fin. A blue crystal hanging from his neck.
I glanced across the table to Asada. She was smiling at me, the pink crystal hanging from her neck. All The necklaces decorated the same way. I wanted to kick myself, if I hadn't been so stubborn, or if I would have went about the situation with Asada better I would have been able to get one of these necklaces sooner. This made taking a shower so much easier.
"Okay kids, I need an agreement tonight, and i'll need another one tomorrow night before the transformation happens," Asada looks around the table. Shockingly all three of the kids were staring at her, awaiting her next words, "The transformation will hurt the first time, it's not the worst pain you will ever feel. It's nowhere near your first heartbreak but I promise it gets better. I will have to hold you under water until your lungs feel like they are going to explode, and honestly they might. But you will come out of this alive, there's no way to die in this transformation. You guys are just the start of a revolution. We are bringing back the mermaid population. Repopulating the waters with those who know the history." I listen carefully as Asada speaks.
"Speaking of history, pop quiz..." Sammy looks around to make sure she has all of the kids attention. They watch her intently waiting for her question. "Who is Asada's mother? And why does she have control over the sea?"
"Atargatis!" Opal pops off. Her silver blonde hair flowing around her face. She looks at the ceiling as if she is pondering for a moment before her hand shoots through the air once more, "And you have control over the sea to protect the sea creatures from going extinct,"
"Good job Opal," Asada whispers patting her head. Sammy couldn't help but chuckle at the excitement the little girl held in such a small package. Suddenly Sammy's phone starts ringing, picking it up she answers the phone before walking away from the table. I could hear her giggling on the end of the line before she entered the kitchen once more.
"Hey guys, that was Hudson, I think i'm going to head out to spend some time with him," Sammy smiles, her whole body glowing with excitement. I roll my eyes as she disappears towards the front door. Asada sits on the other side of the kitchen table pretending not to gag.
"How does it feel she is dating your younger brother?" Gage teases the blonde sitting carefully taking in his words.
"Weird, horrible, but good all at the same time, Sammy is a good girl and Hudson needs that," Asada was seeming to settle into the idea of Sammy and Hudson together. I couldn't help but chuckle to myself. The two of us coming into her life and flipping everything upside down. It was kind of funny how we were able to do that so easily.
"Well I guess we should probably get heading to bed," I sputter off with a yawn. It was half past midnight and we had a long day of makeshift classes to get through tomorrow. I hope Sammy didn't stay out too long as she has the longest day out of all of us with her college classes and then the transformations. Asada needed the help of someone whose been through the transformation to understand, to help calm the children down when their bones break for the first time.
I turn to help the kids towards their rooms. Opal's head lays on the table as she snoozes to the sound of the waves outside. I smile, my heart feeling for the cute kid. How could anyone leave this girl out on the streets?
Gage swipes her up into his arms before I trail behind him towards the room she had been using. He delicately put hers in the bed before tucking the sheets over her. She was the youngest of the three kids.
Once she is all tucked in to bed we head back to the kitchen to meet with Asada, we needed to get our lesson plan started for tomorrow. I laugh at how our lives had all changed in such a short amount of time. Sammy and I now recruiters for the sea, Gage and I are together, our hearts connected. He gave up his humanity for me, and I'll never be able to repay him for that. I reach over interlacing my fingers with his before sinking into his embrace.
"Go get your rest guys, we have a lot of work to get done tomorrow,"
