    LIARA ELOISE SEYMOUR  was born to be a warrior, despite what history said about girls not being heroes.  She knew what her mother used to say: being a hero is overrated.  Being a hero leaves you broken.  Being a hero gets you killed.  But all great heroes are remembered. Think about it—Perseus, Hercules, Odysseus, Jason.  You know them.  Everybody does.  Lia wanted to leave her mark on this world, a world where kids fight for their lives...  and don't always make it back.

    PERSEUS JAMES JACKSON  didn't want to be a half blood, and more importantly, he didn't want to be a hero.  He just wanted to be a normal kid, who worries about grades, and crushes, and all the things teenagers worry about.  Being a hero gets you killed.  He didn't want to be one of the ones who didn't make it back.  Even his namesake didn't have a happy ending. Percy wasn't especially happy about his circumstance, or about his deadbeat dad who never even sent an email, but he supposed he'd do what he would have to do.
