introduction

EVERY NIGHTMARE STARTS WITH A DREAM, and the dream starts out as something ethereal as someone eating ice-cream. Next thing you know, you're slammed by the ice-cream truck and dead.

Then, you wake up, screaming, and your mother rubs your back and soothes you, whispering, "It was just a dream, love, just a dream."

But our minds won't accept that it was a dream. It seemed so real at that moment, it couldn't have possibly been just a dream.

You go back to sleep after your mother left you, leaving the light on and the door open since you begged her to.

STARS. That's all you can see, with the night sky and the gorgeous constellations your naïve little seven-year-old self can't name. You looked out into the night sky, amazed by the ravishing beauty of the stars. Then, a star kisses your cheek, as gentle as a butterfly. You grasped the star in your hand, and then let go of your tight grip, not wanting to hurt it. You look in your cupped hands, and then you're gone.

LUMINOUS. You don't know the meaning of that word yet, but you heard your father say it once, when you asked him, "Is there a word for 'you're the light in the dark?'" he smiled at you and replied, "Luminous." You try to pronounce the unusual word, but butcher it up. He laughs and picks you up, and you go into a fit of giggles. The brightness blinded you, and then you're falling...the floor seemed to disappear.

WAVES. You fall into a body of water, unaware of your surroundings. Then, you not knowing how to swim, choke on the salt water and gasp for air. A merman watches you from a boulder, and you're annoyed at him for not helping you. His purple tail flipped magnificently before he stared at you. He quickly went underwater, leaving you to die. You don't know what to do, and then you forgot that it was a dream and in dreams, you can do anything. You shut your eyes, imagining the shore.

GRAINY. It's the feeling of sand on your arms, sticking to you like glue. You stand up with great difficulty, and you see the merman again. There's a girl with him now, with her black hair all the way down to her waist and she had a flair of arrogance around her. The two talked normally, like two best friends. They turned around, only to face you. The beauty of the strange friendship almost startled you, but you waved your hand meekly anyways. The girl pursed her blood-red lips before disappearing. The merman goes back underwater, leaving you to wonder about them. Then, you felt long, cold fingers around your mouth, and everything went black.

PANICKED VOICES. It's all you can hear, along with the smells of cigarettes and royalty. You can't see anything, but you hear whispers. "How did she get here?" said a voice with a thick accent, and it seemed like a woman's. "No one's dreams can get to here," said another, their voice as rich as gold and wise as time. New fingers, now softer than ever, remove the handkerchief from your eyes and then you look up. The woman was covered in freckles, with a comforting smile. There was another woman, with a permanent frown plastered on her face, seeming to hate you for no reason. Then, there was a loud burst of laughter from behind, and you quickly turn around, only to find a lamp. The red-head groaned and took the golden lamp, and held it out to you. The frowning woman clucked her tongue, but the younger rolled her eyes. You took it, shaking it, and then you were transported.

LOOKS CAN KILL. There was a knight, and a king that sat on his throne lazily, eating grapes. He looked about the same age as the knight, but he had the arrogance of someone who ruled the world. His crown dangled from his black hair dangerously, and the knight gave him a look of pure disgust, and took the armor off, revealing the same girl that talked to merman. She looked sickly, with her olive skin turning into grey, her hands were scarred, and her lips were chapped. She did not look anything like the princess you seen earlier, but you recognized her for the flare of fire in her eyes, the look could kill. The king smiled at the knightess with his disgusting beauty, and she cocked her head over to him, her eyes flashing. He locked eyes with her, and he fell the ground, his crown tumbling to her feet. She smiled at the frightened villagers and slaves as she bent down and twirled the crown in her fingers. She slowly turned around, her amber eyes onto you.

YOU WAKE UP.
