The hybrids I call family part 1
Some people said it didn't show up, so I'm gonna try this again.
This was a request. Both the story idea and the title. Enjoy :)
Applejack sighed. Mist escaped her lips and into the cold winter air. Applejack stuffed her hands into her warm-ish pockets, walking down the sidewalk. She cursed the cold weather.
"Why the hell did it have to snow yesterday?? It just snowed a few days ago. If I slip on a patch of ice out here, I'm going to kill someone."
The winter this year was miserable. The first snowfall of the year was peaceful and exciting. Applejack had played outside with her friends. But now you couldn't go anywhere because the ice was everywhere you stepped, causing many car accidents and injuries to pedestrians. It was nearly 0 degrees Fahrenheit every night. Now Applejack was just annoyed. A strong gust of wind blew from behind her, pushing her forward a bit. Applejack got her footing and stopped. She scrunched down a bit, trying to block out the cold.
"Stupid wind." She muttered before carrying on.
She was relieved when she reached her destination. The bakery. Applejack pushes open the glass door, fighting against the wind. She made it inside, the warmth of the shop engulfing her. She instantly felt a million times better. Applejack let out a sigh of relief. She pulled her hood down and went up to the counter. The shop wasn't very busy that day, thankfully. Applejack ordered a hot chocolate and a grilled ham & cheese sandwich. Applejack used the hot items to warm up her freezing hands. The poor things were pink at the fingertips.
Applejack took off the top of the coffee cup. She figured that the hot chocolate piping hot and the cold would cool it down on the way home. Applejack opened the door and headed down the street. Her teeth were chattering the entire time, her poor hands were exposed to the bitter cold since she had forgotten to wear gloves. Everyone she passed were also bundled up in coats and scarves and hats. Some also had a coffee cup in their hand or were walking with someone and cuddling together as they walked to try and stay warm.
Applejack made slow progress with all the ice in the sidewalks. She made sure to be extremely cautious. One wrong step and she could end up with a fractured skull or a broken bone. Or just public embarrassment. She treaded carefully, keeping her eyes on the ground. She almost missed something out of the corner of her eye. Applejack looked up. She stopped in her tracks. Her heart broke. There, sitting on the sidewalk, curled up, was a girl. She had only a hoodie, blue jeans and red sneakers. She was curled up, shivering like crazy, hugging herself. Her rainbow colored hair was dirty and messy. Her face and clothes were a little torn up and old looking. Applejack wondered how long she'd been out here.
Then, Applejack noticed something out of the ordinary about the girl. On the top of her head, she had wolf ears. They were were pressed down against her head. A tail was also visible. It was the same colors as her hair. The tail was also dirty and matted down with dirt and such, almost concealing it. It was wrapped around the girl's body, probably a poor attempt to keep warm. Applejack was having a hard time processing what she was seeing. She never thought she'd see an actual hybrid. They weren't suppose to be real. Only science fiction. Well, the girl was there in front of her and very real.
Applejack had seen many homeless people in her life. All of them were adults. Drug addicts or runaways with their dogs or people who lost their homes and had nowhere to go. But never a hybrid teenage girl.
Applejack wasn't sure whether to do something or not. She knew that she shouldn't get involved with strangers, but the poor girl looked so miserable and sick and.... that was it! She was going to give her her sandwich. Applejack approached the girl. The girl noticed her right away. She scampered back, fear in her eyes. Applejack stopped.
"Hey." She said gently. "Ah'm Applejack. What's yir name?"
The girl said nothing. She just stared at Applejack, tense and seeming ready to bolt at any second. Her big magenta colored eyes were filled with fear and distrust. Applejack assessed the situation. She slowly knelt down. She scooted closer to the girl. The girl suddenly growled, surprising Applejack. She'd never been growled at by a person before. Only dogs. It was weird. Then again, this girl was half animal. Animal hybrid.
One of her friends was an animal expert. She always said that an animal only growled if they felt threatened. Applejack smiled gently.
"It's ok. Ah'm not gonna hurt cha. Ah won't even touch ya if you don't want me to. Ah bet you're really cold and hungry, huh?"
The girl gave Applejack a once-over. She then nodded. Applejack held out the hot chocolate and sandwich.
"It's hot chocolate and a ham n' cheese sandwich. You can have it. It'll warm ya up."
The girl looked at the sandwich. She looked at Applejack then at the sandwich. She slowly scooted towards Applejack. Applejack said nothing. The girl swiped the sandwich from her hand. She quickly scampered away. She rounded a corner, into an alley way. Applejack got up and quickly followed her. She entered the alley. She saw the girl sitting, her back against the brick building. She tore off the wrapping around the sandwich and took a huge bite out of the sandwich.
Applejack couldn't imagine living in the streets. The dangers, the struggle, the hunger. She was always grateful for what she had and the people in her life. She sympathized with the girl. Applejack watched her eat, not wanting to leave her.
"Hey." She called.
The girl looked up. She saw Applejack and froze. Applejack entered the alley and slowly approached the hybrid girl. The girl suddenly snarled. She got to her feet, in a crouched position. Applejack raised her hands.
"It's alright. Ah'm not gonna hurt cha." She said, getting on her knees. "Ah just wanna talk. Can you talk?"
The girl eyed her for a moment. She relaxed a little, nodded and took another bite of her sandwich. Applejack smiled.
"You like it? Ah just bought it at the bakery."
She held out the cup.
"Ah have hot chocolate too, if ya want it. You look like you need it more than ah do."
The girl nodded. Applejack got up and walked over to her. She knelt down and handed her the cup. The girl took it with a shaky hand.
"Thank you." She said, scooting away from Applejack.
Applejack watched her eat. The girl devoured the sandwich and drank the hot chocolate. They both looked at each other in silence. Finally the girl put the wrapper in the empty cup and set the cup on the ground beside her. She wrapped her arms around her knees. She looked at Applejack.
"Thank you, miss."
Applejack smiled.
"You're welcome."
The girl fiddled with her sleeve. Applejack frowned.
"What's your name?" She asked.
The girl looked at the ground.
"R-Rainbow Dash." She answered, her voice shaky. "Is there something you want from me?? I don't have anything on me."
Applejack shook her head.
"Ah don't want anythin' from ya. Ah just want ta help you."
Rainbow Dash suddenly whimpered. She scooted further away, fear in her eyes.
"That's what they all say."
Applejack watched her. She slowly scooted forward.
"Ah won't hurt you, Rainbow. Ah promise"
Rainbow scooted back. She suddenly got up and ran. Applejack got to her feet and chased after her. She didn't want this girl to get hurt or something.
"Wait!!" She called following her.
Rainbow Dash ran down the alley way. She was fast. Very fast. But that wasn't useful during that time of year. She didn't see the ice. Rainbow Dash suddenly fell. She hit the cement, falling awkwardly on her leg. Rainbow was in shock for a moment.
Applejack hurried to her side.
"Are you hurt?"
Rainbow looked at her and panicked. She scrambled to her feet. She turned around to run but when she took a step, crippling pain shot up her right leg. She yelped, falling back down. She caught herself on a gate. Rainbow looked up. She looked at the black steel gate that trapped her. She turned around, pressing her back to the gate. She looked at Applejack.
"Please, Rainbow." Applejack begged. "Don't be afraid. You don't have ta be scared of me. Ah wanna help you."
Rainbow curled up in a ball. She growled.
"Don't come any closer. I-I'll bite you." She threatened weakly.
Applejack stood up. She slowly approached Rainbow Dash.
"Shhh it's ok. It's alright."
Rainbow pressed herself against the gate, trying to make herself as small as possible. Applejack knelt down in front of her.
"It's ok." She assured. "It's alright."
Rainbow flinched when Applejack reached a hand out. She squeaked when Applejack touched her hair. Applejack gently stroked her hair.
"It's ok. Shhhhh. Don't be scared. You're safe."
Applejack could feel Rainbow relax as she kept stroking her hair. Applejack looked at her ears. She gently scratched behind her left ear. To her surprise, Rainbow leaned into the touch. The hybrid girl was completely calm now, seeming to like the scratching. Hm. Just like a dog. Applejack smiled.
"See? Ah won't hurt ya. Good girl."
Applejack continued to pet her for a few more minutes. Rainbow seemed to relax the more she did. Applejack thought it was adorable. She pulled her hand away.
"Ok. Now let's try that again." She said quietly. "Hi. Ah'm Applejack."
Rainbow looked at her shyly.
"I'm Rainbow Dash."
Rainbow wrapped her arms around herself, sniffling. She exhaled, mist coming out of her mouth. Applejack frowned as she remembered Rainbow's circumstance. She couldn't leave her out here. She'd die. She made a crazy decision.
"Do you have a home?"
The answer was quite obvious, but she wanted to make absolutely sure.
Rainbow Dash nodded, averting her eyes in shame. Applejack looked over her shoulder. She then looked at Rainbow.
"Well, would you like ta come home with me??"
Rainbow's eyes lit up.
"Really??"
Applejack nodded. Rainbow seemed to be contemplating.
"Even if it's just for the night." Applejack said. "Ah saw you fall while runnin' away from me. Did you get hurt??"
Rainbow shrugged, looking away.
"A little. My ankle hurts."
Applejack looked down at the ankle.
"May ah?" She asked, glancing to meet Rainbow's eyes.
Rainbow hesitantly allowed her to see. Applejack carefully pulled up the leg of Rainbow's jeans. Rainbow yelped in pain.
"Ow"
Applejack looked up at her then at the ankle. She carefully touched it, making Rainbow yelp again.
"Yup. It might be sprained." She said. "Ah have a friend that'll make you all better. She's really nice. If you come home with me, ah can give ya a bath and somethin' ta eat and get cha all nice n' warm. Then we'll make your ankle feel better. How does that sound?"
Rainbow nodded weakly. She suddenly shivered, curling up on herself. She sneezed. Applejack had to get her out of the cold. She went to pick Rainbow up. Rainbow whimpered and shied away.
"Oh don't be scared." Applejack soothes. "Trust me. It's gonna be alright."
Rainbow looked up at her and they made eye contact. Rainbow stared at her for a moment. She finally nodded. She let Applejack pick her up. She was surprisingly light. Applejack could only guess how much she weighed. Probably was underweight.
Applejack stood up and carried Rainbow Dash out of the alley and down the street. She felt Rainbow Dash bury her face in the crook of her neck. Her hair tickled Applejack's neck. Applejack heard her sniffle every few minutes. Her bare hands were nearly numb, but she couldn't imagine how cold Rainbow was with little protective clothing to block out the winter weather.
Applejack had no idea what she was getting herself into. All she knew was that this girl needed help and she was gonna help her.
So yeah. I hope you guys liked this and let me know what you think in the comments and if you want a part 2 :)
