It wasn't your fault

Her stomach growled again. Rainbow was snapped out of her daydream. She looked up from the book in her hands. She blinked, coming back into reality. She looked down at  her stomach.

She sighed.

"I don't wanna eat." She complained to no one.

She wasn't feeling very well. Hasn't been for a few days. Twilight diagnosed her with a cold. Applejack had been her nurse, making sure she ate enough and drank enough water and took her cold medicine. However, Applejack had to go to work that day, leaving Rainbow Dash alone in their house, with the dog to keep her company. Rainbow Dash didn't mind being alone at home for a few hours and assured her doting girlfriend she'd be fine.

Rainbow had watched tv, a movie, took her medicine, and was now reading in bed, Tank curled up at the end of her and Applejack's bed. Her stomach had been growling for about an hour, however she'd ignored it up until that point. She sighed and bookmarked the page she was on. She got out of bed and miserably made her way down to the kitchen.

She stood in the middle of the kitchen, trying to decide what she wanted to eat. She checked the pantry, searching each shelf. Rainbow smiled. She found a pack of her favorite soup.

Rainbow took it out and tossed it on the counter. She prepared a pot with water in it. She put it in the stove and turned on the stove. Dumping the noodles in the water, Rainbow suddenly yawned. She sighed. The cold medicine always made her sleepy. Rainbow checked the time. 6:34pm. She would go sit down and then come check on the soup in 10 minutes.

Rainbow reached into her back pocket for her phone. She didn't feel it there. She sucked her teeth.

"Man. I forgot it upstairs." She groaned.

Rainbow walked upstairs, entering her room. She looked around. She spotted her phone on the bed. Rainbow walked over and sat down on the bed. She picked up her phone and unlocked it. She laid down, deciding to go on the internet for a bit. She snuggled with a pillow, making herself comfortable.

As Rainbow scrolled, she felt her eyelids getting heavy, exhaustion taking over. She tried to fight through it, blinking a few times. She yawned once more.

"Let me just close my eyes for a minute." She mumbled.

Rainbow Dash closed her eyes, curling up in a ball. It was only for a moment. What could go wrong in a minute?
——————————
Rainbow heard an annoying beeping sound and barking. Loud barking. It was making her head pound. Rainbow's head lifted up off the pillow. Everything was dark. She could barely see. Rainbow sat up, realizing something was very wrong. The sounds continued. Rainbow looked down to see Tank stand up, barking like mad at her.

"Tank. What's wrong??"

Suddenly, it all made sense. The fire alarm. The smoke.

Rainbow shot up.

"Fire?!!" She shouted, her adrenaline spiking.

Rainbow looked around. Her room was filled with smoke. Rainbow immediately used her T-shirt to cover her mouth and nose. Rainbow remembered what she learned in school about fire evacuation. She got down on the floor. Feeling under her bed, she found a pair of shoes and quickly put them on, knowing it wasn't very smart to go barefoot. She quickly crawled out of her room and down the hall, Tank right by her side. The smoke grew thicker as she and Tank made their way down the stairs. They stopped abruptly when they saw that the first floor was completely engulfed in flames. Rainbow froze. She steeled herself.

"C'mon, Tank."

She picked up the small dog and put him under her shirt to shield him from the smoke. Rainbow Dash hurried through the house, the black smoke obscuring her vision. Her nose was clogged, so she couldn't smell anything.

Rainbow was terrified, everywhere she looked, there was fire. Blazing heat, destroying everything it came into contact with. Rainbow Dash walked through what she figured was the living room. Rainbow coughed violently.

She had to find a way out. She couldn't breathe in too much smoke or it'd kill her. And Tank was a defenseless dog. He'd have no chance of surviving this alone.

Rainbow suddenly jumped back as some part of the curtain collapsed. It fell in front of the window, blocking her. Rainbow looked around. The smoke was so thick, she couldn't see which way was which anymore. She was lost in the smoke.

Rainbow coughed as the smoke filled her lungs, making her throat and lungs dry and raw. Rainbow had to get out. She'd die if she didn't keep going. Rainbow just walked in whatever direction she thought was right. She had to find the front door. Her sickness and the smoke blinding her and limiting her oxygen intake wasn't helping.

She felt so disoriented and weak, blindly stumbling around. The heat was suffocating. It made her dizzy. Rainbow tripped over an unseen object. She fell to the floor, Tank falling from her grip. The dog yelped. Rainbow groaned. She felt a sharp pain in her left ankle. She hissed in pain.

"Shit."

Rainbow slowly sat up. Her shoulder hurt from slamming it when she landed. Rainbow pushed her hair out of her sweating face. She looked at Tank.

"Are you ok, buddy?" She asked.

Tank gave a "Yes" bark, bringing some relief to Rainbow. She got to her hands and knees. She got to her feet, but a sharp pain when she took a step made her whimper and slump a little.
She'd definitely hurt her ankle badly. Rainbow panted lightly.

Just great.

Rainbow looked around, trying to think. The front door. Rainbow Dash called for Tank and the two made their way out of the burning room, dodging falling objects, trying not to catch on fire, keeping high alert of the fact that even the ceiling was quickly catching on fire. The duo finally turned into the area of the house that led to the front door. They stopped.

Rainbow's stomach dropped. The ceiling in this area had partially caught on fire. Rainbow looked up in horror. This had to be a nightmare.

Suddenly, the doorframe Rainbow was standing under collapsed. Rainbow screamed, falling to the floor. She covered her head, her eyes squeezed shut. She laid there for a second, not feeling herself on fire. She opened her eyes to see that the beam had missed her when she fell to the floor, luckily out of the way in time.
Rainbow heard Tank bark. She looked towards the sound. Tank was on the other side of the collapsed wood, looking at her. He had access to the door.

Rainbow gasped. She had an idea.

"Tank. Go to your door!" She commanded.

Tank immediately looked at the front door. The little dog run up to it and jumped through the doggie door that let to the front yard. He was out. Rainbow smiled. Tank was safe now. At least one of them could escape.

She suddenly coughed, feeling lightheaded. Rainbow was more than exhausted. Her throat hurt, her body was weak. There was no escape for her here. She'd have to go to the back door, but that seemed impossible to get to it in her state.

Rainbow looked around. She knew she wasn't getting out. It was hopeless. Rainbow went into a coughing fit. She felt so weak. Rainbow laid down on the floor, staring at the front entrance. She wondered if help was on the way. She could only imagine what the house must look like from the outside.

She wondered if any of her friends or family knew what was going on. She was going to die and they probably had no idea.

And Applejack.

Rainbow's eyes welled up with tears. She'd never see her again. Applejack would have to come home to her house gone and her girlfriend dead. Rainbow hoped her mom would take care of Applejack and Tank.

Rainbow felt her vision clouding over. Was she going to die right now? Seriously? She'd burn to death??

A banging sound broke Rainbow out of her thoughts. Rainbow weakly opened her eyes. She hadn't known she had closed them. She looked towards the front door. The sound continued. It took Rainbow to realize that someone was trying to bust it down. Help was here.

Rainbow Dash's eyes fluttered closed, exhaustion taking over. She listened to the sound of the door being kicked in. She would've jumped at the sound of she wasn't so weak.

"There right!!" She heard a few seconds later from a muffled male-sounding voice.

Rainbow heard something like wood, breaking. A moment later she felt a hand on her shoulder.

"Can you hear me, miss??" The person, most likely a man, asked.

Rainbow was too weak to talk, but she managed to open her eyes a slit and barely move her head. She weakly reached a hand up and grabbed on to any piece of clothing she could. It was enough.

The man gently picked her up in his arms. If Rainbow wasn't half conscious, she'd cry in relief. She was saved. The sudden rush of cool air surrounded her. Rainbow could barely hear sirens and voices and sounds when she couldn't hang on any longer and her eyes closed.

An annoying beeping sound was the first thing Rainbow Dash heard. She felt cold. Her throat and mouth felt dry as a desert.

A bright light made her realize she was waking up. Rainbow's eyes cracked open. She saw the ceiling. Rainbow was confused for a moment. She blinked a few times to clear her vision. Her eyes slowly roamed around the room. She was in a hospital room. Why? She thought back to the last thing she remembered. Fire. Smoke. Dark. Hot. Burning.

Rainbow gasped. She only noticed the feeling something weird on her face. Rainbow slowly reached up and touched her face, only to touch something plastic and cold. It covered her nose and mouth. It had to be an oxygen mask.

Rainbow's throat hurt with every breath she took. Must've been the smoke or something.

Rainbow suddenly heard the sound of a door opening. She looked at the door to see a man with a white coat and dark green scrubs walk in. He rubs hand sanitizer on his hands and smiles kindly at her.

"You're awake. That's great." He said.

He walked over to her bed and sat on a stool beside her.

"Can you tell me your name and how old you are?" He asked.

Rainbow cleared her throat as best as she could.

"Rainbow Eden Dash. I'm 17 years old." She said.

The doctor gave a nod.

"Do you remember anything before you blacked out?"

"There was a fire." She said, her voice raspy all of the sudden. "It's a little hazy. All I remember is so much smoke and I couldn't breathe or see and there was fire everywhere."

Rainbow felt a lump in her throat.

"Where's Applejack?" She asked. "A-And my dog. Is he ok?"

The doctor looked at the papers he had in his hands.

"Your girlfriend was worried sick about you. You're in the ICU. That fire was not small, I'm sorry to say. Your house was destroyed. You were lucky they got to you in time."

Rainbow Dash thought back to that horrible experience. The heat. The smoke. The fear. The panic.

Rainbow Dash felt herself get choked up. She looked at the doctor.

"How long have I been out?" She asked.

"I'd say a few hours. How do you feel? Not good at all, I can only imagine." The doctor said.

Rainbow grimaced.

"It hurts."

The man smiled sympathetically.

"I can't imagine what you went through. But you're lucky. The burns weren't as bad as they could've been. We treated you for 1st degree burns. You're pretty lucky the fire barely touched you. It will take a couple days for them to heal. You'll be here for the duration of those days so we can keep an eye on you. You have a bad bruise on your right shoulder. Your left ankle was fractured. We put a cast on it and it should heal in about two months if you stay off it completely the first few weeks. You are also dehydrated from the cold we were told you have, so we have you on an IV with medication and fluids."

Rainbow stared at the man, barely registering the information. This is was all too much. Rainbow's eyes welled up with tears. She squeezed her eyes shut, sobbing quietly. The doctor stopped talking when he noticed her emotional state.

"I know this all sounds scary and you're so young. You've been through a lot and I'm sorry. Is there anything you need?"

Rainbow sniffled.

"Applejack. I want Applejack here."

The doctor nodded his head.

"Of course. Once we move you into the regular wing of the hospital, they can come see you."

Rainbow's face must've looked confused, because the doctor then said,

"Your family, friends, and girlfriend are all here. They're all worried sick about you. They'll be so happy to know that you're awake."

Rainbow couldn't help but smile. She wiped her eyes, sniffling.

"Thanks." She said.

The man gave a nod.

"Of course. I'll be back in a few minutes so we can move you to another room. Now that you're awake, we can move you out of the ICU as soon as we can."

Rainbow nodded. The doctor left the room. He came back a few minutes with a few more doctors and nurses. They checked her vitals, her pain, her vision.

After she was all cleared, they moved her bed down to the floor below. She was set up in her new hospital room. It had a tv, a bathroom with a shower, a closet, a small couch that looked very cushy, and drawers for clothes.

One of the nurses had been kind enough to go get her some water bottles. The lady helped Rainbow take a few sips. The water was like heaven to her parched throat. After she had her drink, she felt much better. She loved that her room was cold. It felt so amazing against her burned skin.

"Would you like me to tell you friends and family that you'd like to see them?"

Rainbow looked at the doctor man and nodded.

"Oh yes, please." She said without hesitation.

The doctors and nurses left the room. Rainbow was left in quiet. She laid there, soaking in the information that was just crammed into her head. So much has happened in such little time. It was unreal.

Rainbow was brought out of her thoughts by the sound of the door opening. She looked at the door. She saw Applejack walk through the door. Rainbow had never been so happy to see her girlfriend in her life. When, Applejack saw her, she immediately closed the close and all but ran across the room. She sat down on the edge of the bed. She threw her arms around her. The girls embraced, relief evident from both of them.

"Ah was so scared." Applejack whimpered. "Ah thought you....."

Rainbow heard her sniffle. Rainbow lifted her head in surprise. Was Applejack crying? She never cried.

Sure enough there tears running down her tan freckles cheeks. Rainbow was lost for words. What do you say in a situation like this?

Applejack looked her in the eyes, cupping her soot stained cheeks. She didn't say anything for a moment. She just stared. Finally, she looked down.

"Ah'm sorry." She whispered.

"For what?" Rainbow asked. "You didn't do anything wrong. You didn't start the fire or anything."

Applejack looked back up.

"Ah wasn't there to save you. Ah left you all alone, thinking it was alright ta leave a sick person alone at home and expect you ta be able ta take care of yirself. This is all mah fault."

Rainbow could not believe Applejack was actually blaming herself.

"AJ." She said. "This is not your fault. You didn't know this would happen. I honestly can't really remember much of what happened. Now that I think about..."

She paused for a moment. She shook her head at herself, smiling.

"I fell asleep and the food I had on the stove burned, them caught on fire. I have no idea how long I was out. Then I woke up Tank barking. Smoke was everywhere and I could barely see."

Rainbow rolled her eyes.

"It was a stupid decision to cook anything after taking cold medication. It made me so tired, I fell asleep and didn't hear the smoke alarm."

She giggled.

"That's not funny, Rainbow." Applejack scolded.

Rainbow became serious when she saw the look on Applejack's face.

"You almost died, RD. You almost died. Ah almost lost you and...."

Tears ran down her face. Applejack grabbed hold of one of Rainbow's hands, careful to be gentle. Applejack ran her thumb over the skin. She'd come so close to losing Rainbow in that fire. If the neighbors hadn't notice the flames and smoke and called the cops, Rainbow might've not survived. That scared her.

Applejack brought the hand up to her lips and gently kissed the skin. She looked at her so they made eye contact. She released the hand and hugged her. Rainbow relaxed in her embrace. She felt safe.

"Ah love you." Applejack whispered. "So much."

Rainbow smiled.

"I love you, too. Please know that the fire wasn't your fault."

"But it's mah job to protect you." AJ argued immediately, looking at her. "You were in danger and ah wasn't there to save you. You almost died because ah left you alone while you were in no condition to be left alone. You went through something traumatic. Alone. Ah wasn't there to help you. You got hurt."

Rainbow reached out and caressed Applejack's face.

"Applejack. Listen to me. It wasn't your fault, ok? It wasn't. I don't think it was, so neither should you. I was the idiot here. I got myself into that mess."

"Now, don't tell me you're saying it's your fault." AJ said, raising an eyebrow. "Cuz it ain't. Mistakes happen and you were medicated."

Rainbow shrugged. Applejack observed her face.

"How do you feel?" She asked. "Does anything hurt? What did the doctor say?"

Rainbow shrugged.

"Well, I broke my ankle, cuz I fell. I have a few minor burns they treated. Um.... I think that's it."

Applejack looked her over for a moment. She had a sad, distant look in her eye. Rainbow recognized it.

"AJ...." She said. "Stop blaming yourself. I know what you're thinking. This wasn't your fault."

Applejack huffed.

"I shouldn't have left you alone."

Rainbow went to sit up. A pain the spread all through her back made her cry out and lay back down.

"Stay still, baby." Applejack said. "You'll hurt yourself more."

Rainbow grimaced at the pain. Her whole body was in pain. She tried not to let it get to her. She needed to comfort her girlfriend. Rainbow coughed suddenly. She removed the mask and coughed into the crook of her arm. Her body trembled, her throat painfully sore.

Once Rainbow's coughing fit was over, Applejack placed the oxygen mask back on her. Rainbow looked at her.

"This isn't your fault." She said once more. "Don't blame yourself. This was out of your control."

Rainbow suddenly had a flashback. She remembered laying on the floor of that burning building, accepting that she was going to die. She couldn't breathe, could barely see, losing consciousness.

Rainbow gasped when she felt a hand on her arm. It shocked her out of the flashback. Rainbow saw AJ looking at her, worry clear on her face.

"What's wrong?" AJ asked. "You spaced out for a few minutes. Did you remember somethin' bout the fire?"

Rainbow meekly nodded. She felt something wet on her cheek and wiped it. Looking at her hand, she saw a tear. When had she started crying?

Rainbow looked at Applejack, suddenly feeling very emotional. Rainbow couldn't shake the fear she had of almost dying. Rainbow removed the oxygen mask.

"Applejack." She whimpered.

Applejack saw her brave exterior crumbling and immediately wrapped her arms around her. Rainbow clung desperately to her. She felt the tears flow, allowing herself to cry openly.

"I was so scared. I thought I'd never see you again. I was all alone and I couldn't breathe or see. It was so scary. I'm still scared and I don't know why." She sobbed, her face buried in Applejack's shirt.

Applejack held her in her arms, doing her best to comfort her. She whispered comforting words in her ear, assuring her that she was safe and sound. She knew that nothing was ok. Their house was gone. Their belongings was gone. They'd have to find somewhere else to live. That shouldn't be a problem. The hospital bills would be insane, but it would be mostly paid by their insurance.

So many problems were stacking up. Applejack had a headache just thinking about it. But a whimper brought her out of her thoughts. She remembered where she was at. Laying down with Rainbow in a hospital bed. She hadn't registered herself laying down beside her girlfriend.

Applejack realized that she had to put all those problems to the side. Rainbow needed her right now. The girl had been through something traumatic. She had almost died.

Applejack decided that nothing mattered more than the girl in her arms. She could deal with her guilt and money-issues later. Rainbow's well-being was her first priority right now.

"You're alright now." She soothed. "It's alright, baby. You're safe."

She lightly kissed Rainbow on her soot-covered forehead.

"Ah'm here now."

"I'm so sorry." Rainbow suddenly said.

Applejack felt her pull back. She looked at Rainbow.

"Why're you sorry?" She asked.

Rainbow sniffled.

"If I had just ignored that I was hungry and tried to make some soup, none of this would've happened. All our stuff is gone. It's all my fault. Please don't hate me."

Rainbow was sobbing now. Applejack shook her head.

"What? No. Baby, ah don't hate cha. Ah could never hate you. It's just stuff. It can be replaced."

"But there were pictures of your parents in our house." Rainbow sniffled. "They're gone now."

Applejack smiled. "Those are copies."

Rainbow sniffled. "Copies?"

AJ nodded.

"Yeah. Big Mac has the same exact picture albums in his house. Ah made sure that we'd have an extra set of all pictures with someone, in case somethin' like this happened."

Rainbow was in awe. Applejack really was prepared for everything. She gave a laugh.

"So, the pictures of us...."

"The copies are in your mom's house." Applejack reassured. "Don't you worry."

Rainbow giggled. She reached up and kissed Applejack on the lips. Her dried and cracked lips hurt slightly when they came into contact with Applejack's soft lips. Rainbow must've looked like a mess, probably even a little charred from the ashes and spot that fell on her during her journey through the burning building. But she was too relieved to be in Applejack's arms to worry about her appearance.

"You really are the best." She said.

Applejack smiled.

"And you're the most beautiful and bravest gal ah ever met." She replied. "Ah love you."

Rainbow sighed, a smile on her face. She knew that everything, in that moment, was going to be alright.

"I love you too."

So yeah. Comment what you think. I'm realizing these chapters are very long. Longer than I usually do. But I'm sure you guys like long chapters anyway :)
