It was that day again. The dreaded day where you'd get pelted by red rubber balls and nearly killed by the jocks. If you're not so athletic, you're a goner. If you're a nerd, you might as well be dead anyway. But everyone still played.

Dodge ball day.

Rainbow was pumped. She jogged in place, a concentrated look on her face. She was one of the few kids in school who actually liked playing the dreadful game. She was really athletic so it was fun for her. The teen stretched her limbs.

She looked over at her friend Fluttershy.

The girl was chewing on her nails nervously. Fluttershy wad one of the weaker ones in the class and hated the game of pain and humiliation.

"This is gunna be awesome", Rainbow said excitedly.

Fluttershy looked at her friend.

"Awesome??. I'm gunna be killed out there".

Rainbow made pshh sound.

"No you won't. Stop being dramatic".

Fluttershy looled at the floor. Rainbow walked over to her. She sat down in the bleachers beside her.

"Don't worry", she said. "I'll protect you. Just remember to pay attention to your surroundings and keep your hands up so you can try to catch the ball".

Fluttershy bit her lip.

"I-I can try. We're playing with another class. I hope they're nice".

Another class??. That sounded exciting. Suddenly the sound of a door opening grabbed their attention. The girls looked across the gym room to the other side. Another class filed in.

Rainbow's eyes widened. Fluttershy squeaked in fear. Just great.

They saw Dumbbell and his friends walk in. The boys noticed them and smirked. Dumbbell and Rainbow Dash glared at eachother.

Suddenly Rainbow felt her hip bumped. Turning her head, she saw Pinkie Pie. The pink haired teen smiled.

"Don'tworry Dashie", she said. "Someone else is here".

There was a hint of tease in her voice. Rainbow raised an eyebrow. She looked around the large noisy gym, looking for anyone Pinkie might be talking about.

Suddenly she saw her.

Applejack Smith. Her three year major crush. Miss popular. Student body president. The girl who everyone likes or wants to be. Applejack was smart, had good grades, was pretty athletic so she wasn't just a pretty face.

Rainbow couldn't help but like her. She was cute and an amazing person.
All around amazing.

Applejack was with her friends. Rainbow turned back to look at Pinkie, a glare on her face, her cheeks pink.

"Shut up", she growled.

Pinkie giggled. "Applejack is heeere".

Rainbow suddenly felt self-conscious. She adjusted her shirt, tying her hair in a ponytail. She she glanced over at Applejack.

Wait. Why the heck should she care what Applejack thinks of her appearance. The blonde never looked at her as far as she knew. They never had any interaction or ever talked to one another. Applejack probably didn't even know who she was.

Rainbow felt her face fall at the truth of that thought. Applejack was the most popular girl in school. Rainbow was only the sports teams captain. Plus, Fluttershy, Pinkie and her weren't exactly invited to any kind of cool kid parties or ever part of the that crowd. Of coarse people knew them but they weren't speacial.

Suddenly she felt a hand in her shoulder. Rainbow turned her head to see Fluttershy standing there.

"I know what you're thinking", she said. "Don't think about Applejack and just have fun today".

Rainbow nodded. She felt herself swing back into her fun loving, competitive self again.

"Let's do this", she said, smirking.

It was like a war zone out there. Dodge balls flew like bullets from either side. Students were knocked to the ground.

A few weak ones were injured and sat on the sidelines with an icepack to their head or side or face. Fluttershy was one of them. Rainbow, Pinkie Pie and some others were still going strong. Rainbow was lightening fast, dodging each ball that pelted her way.
She got a few people out herself. It was kinda hard to concentrate with Applejack on her team. Yup. That's right. Applejack and Rainbow were on the same side. Rainbow Dash could barely keep a straight mindset with the blonde teen so close by.

Her eyes caught sight of one of Dumbbell's friends. He threw the ball at her. Rainbow was ready and caught the ball, getting him out. Rainbow laughed.

Suddenly she heard, "WATCH OUT!!".

Rainbow turned her head to see a ball flying towards her. Rainbow knew it was inevitable. She quickly covered her face and shut her eyes tightly.

She wasn't hit. Rainbow realized and looked up. Her breath got caught in her throat. Applejack stood there, the ball in her hands. The blonde smiled.

"You're welcome", she said.

She tossed Rainbow the ball. Rainbow was in shock. Applejack was talking to her. Her heart pounded in her chest, her brain in a scramble to find words.
"Uhhh".

Nothing. C'mon stupid brain. Rainbow mustered up a nervous smile.

"Thanks".

Applejack winked. "No problem".

For the rest of the game, Applejack stuck close by to Rainbow Dash. The two dominated the game. They won for their team.

Rainbow fist pumped the air.

"Yes!!".

Pinkie and Fluttershy walked up to her.

"You were great Rainbow", Fluttershy said.

"Yeah", Pinkie agreed. "Especially teaming up with Applejack".

Rainbow's cheek turned pink.

"Shut up".

Suddenly Rainbow felt a tap on her shoulder. She turned around. Did not see that coming.

Rainbow's eyes widened. Speak of the devil.

Applejack stood there with her friends. The blonde smiled.

"Hey".

"Hi!!", Pinkie said, beaming.

Rainbow was dumbfounded and speechless. What should she say??.

She suddenly was elbowed in her side.

"Hi!!", she blurted out.

Applejack giggled. "Cat got chur tongue??".

Rainbow laughed nervously.

"Uhh I guess so".

She sounded so stupid. Applejack must think she's an idiot by now.

Rainbow cleared her throat.

"Sorry. It's just...... you've never talked to me before so I'm not sure waht to say".

Applejack placed a hand on her hip.

"Understandable", she said. "Listen, ah just wanted ta say that you were awesome out there".

Rainbow was shocked.

"I was awesome??. You did even better. In fact".

Rainbow crossed her arms.

"You saved my face from being smashed in my that ball Dumbbell threw at me. Thanks by the way".

Applejack shrugged. "Not biggie. Just didn't want cha ta get hurt. Wouldn't want the captain of like every sports team in school ta be sitt'n out a game".

"You know I'm the team cpatain??", Rainbow asked. "Wait a sec...."

Rainbow's eyes widened. "You know my name??".

Applejack nodded. "Coarse ah do", she said. "You're a great soccer player".

Applejack smiled and crossed her arms.

"Those punks couldn't keep up with ya. Ah coulda sworn ah saw that soccer ball light up in flames when you kicked it".

Rainbow laughed lightly.

"Same. I didn't have time so I just kicked it as hard as possible and hoped for the best. I'm surprised you go to my games. You got friends on the team??".

Applejack shook her head. Rainbow raised an eyebrow.

"Do you like soccer that much then??".

"It ain't the game ah watch", Applejack said. "Ah go ta see you play".

Rainbow's eyes widened.

"Me?".

Applejack nodded. "Yeah".

Woah. "Why me??".

Applejack rubes her arm slowly, eyes on the floor.

"Cuz, ah kinda like you".

Rainbow felt like her heart would explode. Was she being serious??. Was this really happening??.

"You....... do??".

Applejack nodded. "Yeah. Ah kinda wanted ta ask you ta hang out some time. There's a movie next weekend".

Rainbow smiled.

"Sure. Give me your number".

Rainbow handed Applejack her phone. Applejack made her a new contact for herself. She handed it back to the younger teen.

"Ah'll call ya later".

Rainbow stared at the number in shock. She was on cloud nine right then and there. Things couldn't get better. Then it did. Applejack winked and walked away, her friends following, giggling like crazy and whispering.

Rainbow looked down at the phone screen. Applejack.

"Way to go Dashie".

Pink leaned on her, smirking.

"I knew it would happen", she said. "It was destiny".

Rainbow shoved her off, smiling.

"Destiny my ass".

Pinkie and Fluttershy followed her down to the girls locker room. Rainbow secretly smiled. She was so excited, she could burst. She had Applejack's number. This was quite a day for her.
