Let me know what cha think below and your favorite part :)
Rainbow loved to have Applejack read to her. Every oyher day Applejack would sit with her in Rainbow's library and read to her girlfriend. Any book she wanted. Applejack enjoyed seeing Rainbow happy so she kept doing it. She never questioned why Rainbow didn't just read on her own.
She just assumed that Rainbow Dash liked the sound of her voice. She never stopped to ask if Rainbow could read at all. She had never seen her read a single book. Until one day, she did. Well kinda.
-----------------------
Applejack hummed as she walked down the stairs, a new book in hand.
She walked towards their library. When she got to the doorway she stopped. Rainbow was sitting there, a book for children in her hands. Rainbow was looking at the page with a half concentrated and half confused look on her face.
Applejack lightly knocked on the door frame. Rainbow looked up and hid the book behind her back. She smiled.
"Applejack. Hey".
Applejack walked over to her.
"Rainbow. Why are you reading a book fir kids??", Applejack asked.
Rainbow shrugged. "What book??".
Applejack knew she was hiding something. She frowned.
"Babe. You don't have ta lie. You can tell me".
Rainbow bit her lip, bringing the book out from behind her. She sighed
"Are you alright sugarcube??", Applejack asked sitting beside her girlfriend.
Rainbow nodded and smiled. "Yeah. I'm good. You have a book to read??".
Applejack nodded, showing her the book.
"Yeah. Here. Ah want cha ta read the title ta me".
Rainbow looked down at the book. She took it in her hands and looked at the cover. She bit her lip.
"Uh......".
She tried to make sense of the words in front of her but she couldn't. Were these even words??. She sighed. She had to tell Applejack sooner or later. But she was hoping it would be later.
"I can't".
"Why not??", Applejack asked.
Rainbow's shoulders slumped as she sighed.
"I can't read".
That took Applejack completely by surprise. Her eyes went wide in shock.
"What??. What do ya mean ya can't read??. Didn't cha learn how??".
Rainbow bit her lip.
"I have dyslexia".
Applejack's face softened. "Oh".
She knew what dyslexia was. It was a learning disorder. Rainbow couldn't read.
Rainbow nodded and looked at the blonde girl.
"Yeah. I can't read. That's why I never read on my own. I can't".
"What about school??. You seem ta be doin fine in school".
Rainbow sighed. "I'm in speacial classes for teens with dyslexia. That's why you never see me during the day except for lunch. I'm in a totally different part of the school. Except for lunch".
Rainbow brought her knees up to her chest.
"Sorry I can't read. I'm too dumb".
"You are not dumb Rainbow. Your brain just works differently".
Applejack brought her hand to her chin and thought for a moment. She had an idea.
"Hey", she said. "Why don't ah teach ya ta read??. Ah can help you learn".
Rainbow smiled. "You'd do that for me??".
Applejack nodded and smiled. "Coarse ah would. Ah love you".
Rainbow smiled and hugged the blonde. "You're the best".
-----------------------'
"You've gotta be kidding me".
Rainbow looked down at the stack of alphabet cards. Applejack sat down in front of her.
"What am I??. Two??".
Applejack chuckled. "No. Trust me. First lesson. Recognizin letters. When someone has dyslexia, they have trouble identifyin letters. That's why words on paper don't make sense to ya. In order for ya ta read, ya gotta first be able ta identify the letters and their sounds to make the word. This won't be an overnight thing. Ah hope you know that".
Rainbow sighed and nodded. "Okay. Let's get this over with".
Applejack picked up a random letter and held up the card. Rainbow looked at the letter.
"Uh.... R".
Applejack smiled and nodded. "And the sound it makes".
Rainbow thought for a moment.
"Rrr".
Applejack nodded. "Yeah".
Rainbow smiled at her accomplishment. Applejack chose another card.
"C".
Applejack nodded.
"Sound??".
Rainbow stared at the card. She had no idea. She knew it had two sounds to it but couldn't remember what they were.
"Uhh. Don't know".
"There's two sounds. The hard C. Cuh. As in car or cat or camera".
Rainbow nodded in understanding.
"Then there's a soft C. It makes a sss sound. Like ceiling or celery".
Applejack showed Rainbow the card again. Rainbow looked at it.
"C. It makes the Cuh and sss sound".
Applejack smiled. "Good job".
The girls went through the whole pile. Rainbow was happy with her accomplishment. The next day they did the same. And the day after that.
The weird thing was that by the end of the week, when Rainbow looked at the first card of the lesson. She felt her mind blank out.
What letter what that??. It was a circle with a line at the bottom. Which letter was that??. She couldn't remember. She didn't know. Now Rainbow felt it all crashing down on her. She didn't know a letter from the alphabet. From the ABCs. Something she learned in kindergarten.
And boy did she feel stupid.
Rainbow's eyes lowered to the floor. She got up and ran out of the room. Applejack got up. She ran after Rainbow Dash upstairs to their shared room. Rainbow slammed the door closed and locked it.
Applejack sighed as she looked at the white paint.
"Rainbow??. Are you alright??".
No answer. Applejack sighed. She kneeled down and looked at the lock. Using her nail she turned the lock and opened the door.
Walking in she saw Rainbow sitting in the corner, her face hidden in her knees. The country girl walked over to her girlfriend and sat down in front of her.
"Rainbow. Talk ta me".
Rainbow looked at her and then looked away.
"What's wrong??".
Rainbow sighed. "Nothing. I'm just too stupid to read".
Applejack glared to her. "Rainbow. You are not stupid. Get up".
Applejack grabbed Rainbow by her wrists and pulled them both up so thehey were standing. Applejack looked at Rainbow Dash.
"Rainbow. Listen ta me".
Rainbow looked up at her. Applejack saw a look on her face. Rainbow was giving up on herself. She had no self esteem left in her. She was done.
"You can do this. Ah know ya can. Do what if you can't remember a letter. It's only been a week. You can remember all the other letters. No one's expectin ya ta know them all in a week. Don't give up now".
Rainbow sighed. "I already have. Just leave it. I don't wanna learn anymore. It's impossible".
Applejack reached out and touched Rainbow's arm.
"No it ain't. You just have ta have a little self confidence".
Rainbow looked at Applejack. She sighed.
"You really believe I can do it??".
Applejack smiled. "No. Ah know you can do it".
Rainbow smiled. "Okay".
-------------------------
Weeks passed. Applejack did alphabet cards, the ABC song. Then taught Rainbow the sounds of them. She had Rainbow identify small words that she could remember easily. It'll make reading easier if Rainbow memorized some small words.
"Th-th-ank you. Th-Thank you.
S-Saaaam I am".
Rainbow closed the book, her jaw dropping.
"I did it".
Applejack smiled. Rainbow got up excitedly.
"I did it!!. I read a whole book!!!".
Applejack stood up. Rainbow hugged her tightly. "Ah'm so proud of you".
Rainbow laughed and pulled away. She smiled so much it made Applejack's face hurt. The blonde kissed her cheek, taking her hand.
"See??. Told ya".
Rainbow blushed and rubbed her arm.
"Yeah. I-I guess you did. Sorry for doubting".
Applejack smiled softly.
"It's okay babe. Ah get why you were frustrated".
Rainbow looked down at the books scattered across the floor. She picked up a book.
"Can we try a real book next??".
Applejack smiled. "Sure".
The girls sat down on the bed. Rainbow opened to the first page. She frowned and looked at the page.
"Are these even-".
"Rainbow".
Rainbow looked at Applejack.
"Try".
Rainbow sighed and looked at the page, her eyes squinting.
"Once upon a time. There were two..... uh k-ki....king- kingdoms. Th-The rulers of those two kingdoms w-were at war".
Rainbow stopped and looked at the next sentence.
"I can't read that!!", she exclaimed.
Applejack looked at the sentence Rainbow was talking about. She looked at Rainbow who was trying to form the word in her mouth. It was cute but sad. Applejack decided to help her out.
"What letter is that??", she asked.
"H", Rainbow said.
Applejack nodded. "And what sound does that make??".
"Hu. Like huff".
Applejack nodded.
Rainbow looked at the word.
"H...ow....how.....ev....howev...".
Applejack smiled. Rainbow was so cute when she was sounding out words like that. It was adorable. Applejack felt herself fall more in love with the girl than she was before.
"However".
Applejack rubbed her chin.
"You sure that doesn't say milk??. Ah coulda sworn that what it says".
Rainbow giggled. "No. It doesn't silly".
Applejack face palmed. "Ohhhhh okay. You're right".
Rainbow giggled. Applejack looked at her.
"I'm pretty sure it says milk though. You sure that's not what it says??".
Rainbow nodded still giggling.
"Yeah. I'm sure. That says however. Not milk, silly".
Applejack laughed. "Okay. Ah believe ya".
Applejack loved that Rainbow was so confident with her answer. She loved this childish side of Rainbow Dash. The girl reminded Applejack of a little kid. Applejack wouldn't mind making a fool of herself on purpose just to make Rainbow laugh.
She would make a mistake on a word on purpose any day if it meant Rainbow would be able to be this confident with her reading skills.
Applejack listened to her read. She smiled and sat back, her arm around Rainbow's waist.
She cheered when Rainbow finished the page about half an hour later.
"That's a new record", Applejack said smiling.
"Can I keep going??", Rainbow asked.
Applejack nodded. "Coarse. As much as you want".
Rainbow laughed. "Maybe I should start reading to you from now on".
As she slowly read Applejack got to thinking. That might not be a bad idea.
