Rainbow looked at the object in her hand.

"So this is a hat??".

She looked up at Applejack. Applejack smiled and nodded.

"Yup. Human wear it".

Rainbow looked at the hat. It was rough to the touch. She was holding Applejack's stetson. The girls were teaching her some things about the human world since. Rainbow was a very curious girl and so her friends decided to tell her us much information about the human world as they could cram into Rainbow's brain.

Applejack watched with amusement as Rainbow looked at her hat with wonder. Rainbow then bit into it.

Applejack giggled when Rainbow immediately pulled away, a disgusted look on her face.

"It's not food, RD", she said. "It probably tastes back".

Rainbow nodded.

"It tastes gross".

Rainbow handed Applejack back her hat.

"So, anything else you guys wanna show or tell me??".

Applejack looked down at Rainbow's tail. It swished slightly, the scales shining in the sunlight.

"Actually", Twilight said.

"We were hoping you could tell us about the mermaid world. We'd love to know more since humans know nothing about mermaids. Mermaids are suppose to be myths".

"Oh", Rainbow said, genuinely surprised.

She shrugged. "Well. What do you want to know??".

"Is Atlantis real??", Twilight blurted out.

Rainbow looked at her. She smiled, knowing that she'd be asked that question.

Rainbow nodded. "But don't tell anyone".

Applejack made "hm" sound.

"Who'd believe us??".

Rainbow glanced at her and shrugged.

"You never know, Apples".

Rainbow and Applejack made eye contact. Both were smiling like idiots.

"Hey Rainbow??", Fluttershy spoke up.

Rainbow looked at her. "Yeah??".

Fluttershy was looking at something. Rainbow looked down. She immediately covered a spot on her left side. The others noticed.

"What??".

Applejack looked to Fluttershy. Fluttershy pointed. Applejack looked at Rainbow Dash. Rainbow had a slightly panicked look on her face.

"Rainbooow", Applejack said suspiciously.

Rainbow Dash bit her lip, looking away.

"Yeah??", she said, not looking at Applejack.

Applejack reached a hand out and took Rainbow by her wrist.

"C'mon. Lemme see", she said.

Rainbow shrugged. "See what??".

Applejack gave her a look.

"Rainbow. Move yir hand off".

Rainbow looked at the water. "Why??".

Applejack rolled her eyes. She yanked Rainbow's hand away from her body. She held Rainbow's wrists securely in her hands. Rainbow struggled against her.

"Hey!!".

Applejack looked down. She saw a fist sized black and blue bruise on Rainbow's left side.

Applejack looked at Rainbow, trying to make eye contact.

"What happened??", she asked, genuinely concerned.

Rainbow shrugged. "Bumped into a table", she said. "Got pushed by accident at home by one of my sisters and-"

"You have sisters??", Twilight asked.

Rainbow nodded. "Three older sisters. Dazzle, Trixie, and Sonata".

"How come you never talk about them??", Applejack asked.

Rainbow shrugged. "I don't like talking about them. They get enough attention as it is. We are royalty after all".

"Wait what??!!", the girls chorused, eye widening.

Rainbow nodded. "Yup. I'm a princess. My father is the king of the ocean".

Rainbow's face fell. Applejack noticed.

"What's wrong??", she asked.

Rainbow shook her head. "Nothing. I'm fine".

Applejack gave her a look that said, 'Yeah right, liar'.

Rainbow sighed. "You saw the bruise right??".

Applejack nodded, already having an idea where this was going. Rainbow looked down at her tail.

"One of my sisters hit me", she said. "On purpose".

Applejack's eyes widened.

"Why??"

Rainbow shrugged.

"I don't know".

Rainbow Dash laughed dryly.

"They've done it a bunch of times before so I'm used to the hits and bruises. I guess they just hate me".

Rainbow looked at Applejack.

"Does this happen in your world too??. Am I the only one with this problem??".

Applejack shook her head. "No. It happens a lot in our world. Kids get abused all over the world. It's a horrible truth but it does happen".

Rainbow's mouth fell open.

"To kids??".

Applejack nodded.

"Yeah".

Applejack looked at the large bruise. She couldn't stand the thought of someone hurting Rainbow Dash. It made her heart break.

"Why doesn't chur dad do anythin' about what chur sisters did to you??", she asked.

Rainbow shrugged. She smiled sadly.

"He hits me too".

The girls gasped.

"How could he??", Rarity said. "No child should ever have their parent lay a hand on them. Especially their fathers".

Rainbow shrugged. "It's not fair", she said. "My dad only beats me. My sisters...... well...... he actually loves them. He treats them like jewels. He really cares about them and tells them he loves them. He used to do that for me but......."

Rainbow looked at Applejack. She shrugged.

"Not anymore. He can't stand to be near me sometimes. I guess it's because I'm different".

"What do you mean different??", Twilight asked.

Rainbow looked down at her tail. She slipped a hand from Applejack's.

"You see this??", she asked, pointing to a picture on her sky blue tail.

It was a cloud with a rainbow coming out of it in the shape of a lightning bolt.

"This is my destiny mark. All merfolk are born with one. They mark what we are meant to be".

The girls nodded in understanding.

"They could have something to do with music or art or singing. My sister Adagio, the eldest, had a crown for her mark. She's meant to be the next in line for the throne".

Rainbow sighed. "But I'm different. My mark has something to do with clouds and a lightning bolt. Nothing to do with water or a normal merfolk destiny. Mine is a human mark. That's bad in our world if we're different. It means we don't belong. My family knows that".

Rainbow smiled fondly.

"My mom didn't mind it one bit. She loved that I'm different and always said that it made me speacial and she use to tell me all the time".

"What do you mean use to??", Pinkie asked.

Rainbow's face fell. She looked at her tail, swishing slightly.

"She died when I was little".

The girls were silent.

"Ah'm so sorry", Applejack said.

Rainbow looked at her.

"Thanks".

Rainbow sighed. "But yeah. My home life isn't so nice. It's the reason I come here to the cove in the first place. To get away from it all and where my family can't find me".

Rainbow smiled. "But now I have you guys. The first friends I've ever made".

Rainbow looked at Applejack.
Applejack winked playfully making Rainbow blush. The mermaid and the human teen girl stared at eachother.

"Oh my", Rarity spoke up suddenly.

The girls looked at her.

"Um girls", Rarity said. "Pinkie, Fluttershy, and Twilight. Come with me to the car. I think I forgot some things for our lunch. C'mon".

Rarity looked at Applejack.

"You stay here".

The girls looked at eachother in confusion but nonetheless, did as told. Twilight, Pinkie, and Fluttershy got up and followed Rarity.

Once they were gone, it was awkward. Rainbow glanced at Applejack. She saw Applejack looking at her and quickly looked away. She concentrated on the waterfall nearby.

It was so pretty. The way the light shined on it made look colorful.

"Hey Rainbow".

Rainbow turned her head and looked at Applejack. Applejack was fiddling with the ends of her hair. She was nervous.

"Yeah??".

Applejack bit her lip. She deep breath and exhaled.

"So ah wanted ta ask you somethin", she said.

Rainbow nodded, encouraging her to keep talking.

"Okay. Ask".

Applejack twiddled with her fingers.

"Okay. So we've been friends fir a while now and have gotten ta know eachother".

Rainbow perked up a little.

"Yeah".

"And ah've been thinkin' about cha a lot the past few months ever since we met. You're beautiful, and funny and loving and awesome and kinda cute in my opinion".

Rainbow nodded. "Yeah??".

Applejack bit her lip, looking at her hands.

"And um-".

Rainbow giggled. "Just ask me".

"Would you like ta be mah girlfriend??".

Rainbow smiled. "Really??. You mean it??".

Applejack nodded. "Yeah. Ah mean it".

Rainbow's smile fell. "Why??".

Applejack was not expecting that question. She thought for a moment.

"Well......".

Applejack thought of something.

"Ah like you. You're smart, funny, an amazing friend. You're just great and ah couldn't help but fall fir you. Even though we haven't known eachother fir very long, it feels like we've known eachother forever".

Applejack shrugged. "Ah don't know. So will you??".

Rainbow smiled and nodded. "Sure".

Applejack smiled. The two stared at eachother. Their hands linked together.

"Awww".

The two girls jumped. They quickly looked back to see the other girls standing there. The girls were smiling.

"I knew it", Rarity squealed. "I knew you two would get together".

Rainbow looked at Applejack, pulling her hand away immediately. She looked down at her tail, frowning.

"We don't have to tell them", she whispered quietly. "If you don't them to know we're together, I'll go along with it. I don't want you to be embarrassed".

Applejack looked at her like she was crazy.

"Hide this??. What??. No".

Applejack laughed. "Nonono. That's not what I want".

Applejack's smile fell.

"Rainbow. Ah'm not ashamed of you. They know ah like you. They won't mind. And even if they do mind, ah don't care. Ah really like you, Rainbow. More than you know. Ah'm not going ta hide you or how ah feel about chu".

Applejack took Rainbow's hand, squeezing it gently. Rainbow looked down at their hands and smiled at Applejack. Applejack smiled and looked at their friends.

"Yeah. Ah just asked her out".

The girls came over to them and say down.

"We brought the sandwiches", Pinkie said, holding up a picnic basket.

"Let's eat".

The girls passed out the sandwiches and water bottles. They chatted as they ate.

"Oh yeah", Rainbow spoke up, getting the girls' attention.

"I forgot to mention", she said. "There's this music playing thing here next week. Merfolk are going to come to the cove, including my family. There'll be music, singing, merfolk hanging out and playing. It'll be fun. You should come and listen to the music merfolk play".

Rainbow shrugged. "Of coarse you can't be seen. I'll tell you more about it tomorrow and we can probably meet up somewhere away from everyone else".

"That sounds like fun", Pinkie said. "I love a good party".

"Me too", Rarity said. "We'll be there".

Rainbow and Applejack looked at eachother for the millionth time that day. They smiled. Things were great.
