Safe and Sound part 3
Warning: contains mention of sexual assault
Applejack stayed silent as she watched the interaction between Rainbow and the child therapist. Rainbow was doing what she would normally do in a situation like this:
Glaring at the doctor and stayed as far away from her as possible as if the woman was a threat.
Nonetheless she answered questions if she felt like it. Applejack just held her hand, not saying a word, letting the woman do her thing.
"So, Rainbow." The woman said. "I understand that you were held hostage for about three days, right??."
Rainbow nodded. The therapist nodded. Applejack could see her storing the information into her memory for later.
"Can you tell me what you were doing when you got kidnapped??."
Rainbow shifted around. She looked down at the bedsheets, playing with her hospital bracelet. She didn't say anything.
Applejack looked at her girlfriend then the therapist. The woman looked like she had expected that from Rainbow.
"Don't wanna talk??." She asked softly.
Rainbow shook her head.
The therapist held up a pencil and an black notepad that she had on her lap.
"Think you can write for me??."
Rainbow looked up. She stared at the notepad for a few seconds. Then she nodded. The therapist handed her the items and sat back, crossing her legs, folding her hands over her lap.
Rainbow wrote slowly. Applejack didn't try to read what she was writing. She let Rainbow have her privacy. She didn't need to know if Rainbow didn't feel comfortable saying anything out loud. Rainbow held up the notepad, so the woman could read what she wrote down.
The woman's eyes scanned the yellow lines paper. She nodded.
"You were at the store. Buying some stuff??.
Rainbow nodded. She pointed at Applejack.
"For Applejack??." The woman guessed.
Rainbow nodded.
"And you went alone??"
Rainbow nodded again.
The session went on for about an hour. Rainbow nodded or shook her head in response to the woman's question or statements. She wrote down what she wanted to tell her. The woman didn't push her to talk. AJ sat silently through it all, only talking if the woman talked to her or if Rainbow "talked" to her as well.
"Rainbow." The therapist said cautiously. "Do you remember everything that happened when you were with the men that took you??."
Rainbow nodded. She wrote something down on the paper. She hesitated for a bit but eventually held up the notepad.
I wish I could forget.
The therapist slowly nodded, letting that statement sink in.
"Did something happen while you were held hostage you want to forget??." She asked. "You don't have to answer. I just think it might help me help you if I know if anything happened."
Rainbow looked at Applejack then the woman. She nervously swallowed. She looked at her arms and pointed at her bruises and scars.
The therapist nodded. "Ohhh. They did that??." She said, already knowing the answer before she had even asked.
Applejack guessed the therapist wanted Rainbow to tell her herself.
Rainbow nodded. The therapy was quiet for a moment.
"Now um. Rainbow. I need to know something, so I'm gonna ask you a serious question. And I want you to know that you shouldn't feel embarrassed if the answer is yes, okay??. It's okay to say yes if that's the truth. You don't have to say it out loud. You can nod your head or write down the answer."
Applejack had a feeling of what the question was, and she was terrified of the answer.
"Were..... Did......".
The woman tried to find the best way to phrase her question as gentle and subtle as possible. She inhaled.
"While you were being held hostage, did any of the men touch you in any inappropriate way??"
Rainbow didn't respond. Her eyes hazed over as if remembering something. She looked at her hands and brought her knees up to her chest. Applejack and the woman looked at each other, waiting for Rainbow to answer.
Finally........ Rainbow nodded.
Applejack held a hand up to her mouth. She hadn't expected that answer.
"Thank you for being honest." The therapist said. "I have to say, you're brave. Not many people would have told the truth about that. Good job, Rainbow. I'm proud of you."
Rainbow turned away. She pursed her lips together.
She grabbed the notebook and scribbled something down. Her expression changed to anger. She held out the notebook. The therapist took it and read it.
She looked up at Rainbow.
"I understand how angry and hurt you must feel, Rainbow. You went through something no one should have to."
Rainbow sat back, crossing her arms. As seconds ticked on, her posture changed. Rainbow's arms slowly wrapped around herself, covering her chest. She had a distant look in her eye.
AJ looked at the woman. The woman was observing Rainbow, analyzing her behavior and probably her answers. The woman smiled gently.
"We don't have to talk about that. Um, that's it for now. I'll let you rest while I go talk to some people, okay??"
Rainbow nodded. The woman stood up, holding the notepad. "I'll be back in a little while."
She looked at Applejack. "Can I speak to you outside for a moment??"
AJ nodded, standing up. She looked at Rainbow. The girl looked nearly frightened at the idea of Applejack leaving her alone.
"It'll be only a few minutes." The therapist promised Rainbow Dash. "She'll just be outside the door."
Rainbow hesitantly let AJ go. Applejack followed the therapist outside. Strike was waiting out there as well. He stood when he saw them walk out.
"I need to talk to you both." The therapist said. "Since you are her legal guardian." She looked at Strike. "And you're living with her." She looked at AJ.
They nodded. The woman sighed.
"That girl is so strong." She shook her head. "As you can tell, she's been through a lot of past couple of days. I need to talk to you about what I plan to do."
AJ crossed her arms, her full attention on the woman.
"Rainbow has shown some obvious signs of trauma. Emotional and psychological. She admitted that she was sexually assaulted during her time in captivity."
Strike gasped. Applejack looked at him. He was probably thinking of ways to kill the men that had hurt his niece. She couldn't blame him. She felt like murdering them herself.
"She's obviously having a hard time coping with what happened, and she has a lot of anger because of it."
"That's actually how she always is." Strike informed. "She has a bit of anger issues. She takes medicine for it. She used to go to therapy for it when she was younger after her mom passed away when she was about six years old."
The woman nodded. "I see. Does she take any other medication the doctor should know about or have you already talked to him about that??"
"I spoke with the doctor about that, yes." Strike confirmed with a nod. "Is there anything we need to know about Rainbow's condition so we don't set her off or upset her??."
"That's what I'm going to talk to my teammates about." The therapist said. "I'll be back in about an hour or two and then we'll discuss it then. Until then, I advise you not talk about it. Have her use this notepad to write on it if she doesn't want to talk. She seems to have muted herself. She refuses to talk with me nor Applejack. My guess is that she's embarrassed or too emotionally traumatized about what happened to her that she can't speak. It's normal in victims of sexual assault."
Applejack shuddered at those two words. Her poor Rainbow had been through something awful.
"So just watch her. Her mental state is questionable at this point in time so don't leave her alone. She'll need to be here for a few days to help with her recovery and such. We'll have a nurse check in on her every so often throughout the night. For now, let her sleep. Don't be alarmed if she had nightmares. It's almost expected for abduction victims, especially kids, to get nightmares about their ordeal."
Applejack nodded.
"I'll see you soon." The therapist said before walking away.
Applejack and Strike looked at each other, letting the information sink in. That was a lot to take in.
"Thank goodness it's July." AJ said. "Rainbow would have a hard time if we had school."
Strike nodded. "Poor Rainbow."
"She's gonna have a hell of a time recoverin'." AJ noted. "She's afraid of all men and strangers and she's even more angrier than she usually gets and she doesn't trust people she doesn't know at all. You shoulda seen the way she looked at the therapist when she first walked in. RD looked at her like she was the bad guy."
Strike shook his head. "This is crazy. You better get in in there. She's afraid of me, so I'd rather let her relax. Just get her to calm down and get comfortable here. Make sure she knows she's safe now."
Applejack nodded.
"Ah can do that."
Strike nodded. "I'll go find your friends and your dad. Call me if you or Rainbow need me. Any time at all. I'll be back later"
He turned and walked away. Applejack turned and walked back inside. She stopped at the entrance when she saw Rainbow. The girl was sitting up, blanket pulled up, hiding most of her. Her eyes looked at her in fear for a spirit second, before she slightly relaxed.
AJ grinned, walking up to her.
"Relax, beautiful. It's just me. Yir girlfriend. You're safe. This is a hospital after all."
AJ walked over to the bed. She sat down, looking at Rainbow.
"Why don't chu get some sleep??." She suggested softly.
Rainbow shrugged. Applejack helped her lay down. Rainbow was obviously in pain so it took a little while. Once Rainbow was situated, Applejack sat on a chair beside her bed, sitting close to her hospital bed. Rainbow stared at her silently, not saying a word.
Applejack rested be elbow on the soft bed, looking at Rainbow.
"Go on." She urged. "Rest. Ah'll be right here."
Rainbow reached out slowly and too her hand. She lightly squeezed it.
"I was so scared." She whispered, surprising Applejack. "I was scared I'd never see you again or that you wouldn't.........."
"Wouldn't what, baby??."
Rainbow shook her head, averting her eyes away from Applejack's. AJ rubbed her hand and gently kissed the top of it.
"Get some sleep. Try, at least."
Rainbow sighed and closed her eyes, obviously needing it. She was out in seconds. Applejack sighed quietly as she sat there.
Something was definitely wrong with Rainbow. Now she just had to wait for the doctors to come back.
The next few days were gonna be a pain in the neck.
So yeah. Comment what you think :)
