Love knows the heart
This was a request. You know who you are. I really hope you like it. Enjoy :)
Applejack's next door neighbor was definitely strange. They never came outside and Applejack has never seen them.
All she knew what that her neighbor was a girl. But in all the two years she had been living in her small house in Canterlot, she had never once seen her in the day. Applejack had seen the mystery person leave their home at night to gather their mail. But never in the daytime when the mail came. Applejack had seen a man leave the home every day and he'd come back at night. He always wore a jacket and a hat, so Applejack couldn't see his face. It was weird. But then again, nothing as normal in Canterlot.
Applejack was sitting at her desk in her bedroom, looking out her open window that faced said neighbor's home. She had been sitting there, not knowing what to do with herself. She had finished all her paperwork that she to complete that day for her company. At some point while she completed the paperwork, Applejack had looked out her window. Her thoughts began to go towards her unknown neighbor.
Now, she was just sitting there, wondering who they were and what they looked like. There was certainly something strange going on with them.
As Applejack thought about those things, she was suddenly snapped out of her thoughts by a flash of movement on the other side of the window. She blinked and straightened up, becoming more alert.
Applejack looked over to the window that belonged to the home beside hers. The curtains were being pulled aside. Applejack saw a girl. Her breathing halted. Was this the girl that lived there??
The girlopened the window curtains and opened up her window, probably to finally let some sunshine in.
Applejack had seen a lot of girls in her 18 years of life. But man. This girl sure was beautiful.
The girl leaned out the open window, prompting herself on her arms on the window sill, looking down. She hadn't noticed Applejack yet as she looked around casually.
Applejack stood up and walked over to her window. She leaned her head out, copying the girl's position on the window sill.
"Hey." She called, smiling.
The girl jumped. Her head snapped up and she looked at the blonde teen with wide eyes. She relaxed when her eyes landed on Applejack.
"Oh. Hi." She said.
"Are you on house arrest ir somethin'??." Applejack chuckled. "Ah never seen ya leave this place during the day b'fore."
The girl looked away. She shrugged, a grin on her face that seemed forced.
"Maybe I am."
Applejack couldn't tell if she was kidding or not.
"Ah don't mean ta pry." Applejack said. "But are you some kind a recluse??."
Rainbow shrugged. "Sort of. Don't exactly have much of a choice."
"WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING?!!." Someone yelled from inside the unknown girl's window.
Both girls jumped. The beautiful girl stuck her head back inside the window.
Applejack watched her back away from the window. A man came into view.
"WHAT HAVE I TOLD YOU??"
A man suddenly stuck his head out the window. The man looked just like the girl, but had tattoos and was very built from what Applejack could see of him. He looked like someone you'd see in a gang movie. He looked at Applejack and sneered.
"Fuck off, blondie." He spat. "I don't wanna see you talking to her again."
With that, the man pulled his head back in and slammed the window shut, pulling the curtains close. Applejack was stunned. What was that all about?? Was that her father??
Applejack pulled her head back inside. She closed her window and went back to her desk. Sitting down, she glanced over the papers on her desk. Her thoughts were filled of that girl at the window. She looked out her window once more, looking at the other house.
What are those people hiding?? Why didn't that girl ever leave?? Applejack had enough common sense to know that there was more to the story. More to uncover and find out.
All she knew was that she needed to see her again.
-----------------------
"Are you serious??."
"Yeah."
Applejack tucked a lock of hair behind her left ear as she spoke into the phone.
"The guy just took one look at me n' told me ta fuck off. He seemed pissed that she was talkin' ta me. Ah haven't talked seen her again in like four days."
"What does she look like??. Twilight asked.
Applejack sighed, laying back on her bed. She looked up at the ceiling. She smiled at the thought of the girl.
"She's beautiful, Twi. The most beautifulest gal ah ever saw. She had long, wild, rainbow colored hair, big magenta eyes, skin the color of the sky."
"Too bad she never comes out. She'd probably be a nice addition to our friend circle."
Applejack made a humming sound of agreement.
Ever since their first brief, very informal meeting, Applejack couldn't stop thinking about the girl. Why couldn't she leave?? What was her name?? Was that her dad that had yelled at her?? Was she in trouble for talking to her??
So many questions swarmed her head, she didn't notice the light tapping sound at her window.
It shook Applejack out of her train of thoughts. She turned her head towards the window. She smiled and sat up quickly.
"Twi. She's back at the window. Ah'll call ya later."
"Alright. Tell me what happens."
Applejack said a quick goodbye before hanging up. She got out of bed so fast, she nearly tripped over herself. She clumsily made the short walk to the window.
Applejack looked out to see the girl at her window, looking at her. Well, she assumed she was looking at her. The girl was wearing a hoodie, the hood up, and dark sunglasses. Applejack opened her window and stuck her head out.
The girl gave a nervous smile.
"Hey." She said. "My dad's downstairs so we have to keep our voices down."
Applejack smiled. "Hey."
Her expression then changed to concern.
"Are you alright?? Was that chur dad that yelled at us a few days ago?."
The girl sighed. "Yeah. I just wanted to apologize for that. He's just trying to protect me."
Protect her??
What possible danger could come from talking to another teenage girl and making a friend?
"From what??."
The girl shrugged. Applejack couldn't help but feel that she knew the answer to her question.
"People." The girl said. "Things happen all the time. Let's just say people aren't so nice these days. Especially to my dad with his reputation on these streets."
"What do ya mean??." Applejack asked, confused. "What does the world got against ya??."
The other girl shrugged.
Applejack thought for a moment.
"Are you hidin from someone??."
The girl laughed but it seemed forced. She looked around, as if looking for someone.
"I guess you could say that."
She grinned at Applejack and flipped her hair dramatically.
"It's hard being so famous."
Applejack could help but chuckle. The girl then became serious, all jokes put aside.
"Look. We can't keep talking."
Applejack frowned. "Why not??." She asked
The other girl sighed.
"It's just better that you forgot you ever saw me. It'll keep you safe."
There was a sadness in her voice. Applejack didn't understand why. So many whys and whats.
The girl was about to go back inside, when Applejack stop her.
"Wait."
The girl looked back at her. Applejack couldn't imagine not being able to talk to other people. She wondered if this girl's family was in any form of trouble and that's why she couldn't leave her house. Was someone trying to hurt her and her father??
"Are you safe in there??." She asked.
The mysterious girl seemed to have hesitated. She smiled. It was fake. She nodded. It was a lie.
Applejack had the ability, some said it was a gift, to tell if someone was lying. And this girl was definitely lying. Applejack wanted to know why.
But she chose to play along. The girl wouldn't tell her anything anyway, so she might as well.
"Alright. Just checkin."
"Not to sound rude." The girl said. "But why do you care so much?? You don't know me."
Applejack grinned and smiled.
"Don't matter. Ah care about chu even if we just met a couple of days ago. Ah care bout everyone that might be in trouble or somethin. Plus, ah find ya interesting."
The girl snorted. "Well, blondie." She grinned at the nickname. "You shouldn't. I don't think you'd like me once you got to know who I am and who I'm related to."
Her smiled faltered. "I'm keeping you safe. Please. Forget you ever met me."
"Ah can't do that." Applejack said. "You've honestly been in mah mind a lot ever since ah moved here. Ah always wondered who you were and why ya never leaved the house. Trust me. Ah noticed."
The cyan colored girl huffed. "Yeah. Well. I can't exactly keep talking to you like this."
Applejack had an idea.
"Do ya have a phone??."
The crossed her arms, not saying anything at first, but then sighed
"You really wanna talk to me, don't cha??."
Applejack nodded her head.
"You ain't scarin' me away, Skittles."
The girl snorted. "Skittles??."
Applejack smirked. "Since you won't tell me yir name, ah gotta make one up."
Skittles, as Applejack will now call her, shook her head.
"You're unbelievable. But I like you."
Applejack smiled.
"Glad ta hear it."
Skittles looked back into her room. She looked at Applejack. She seemed disappointed from what Applejack could tell. Skittles' sunglasses made it impossible to tell her emotions with her eyes.
"I gotta go in a few. It's almost dinner time." She said.
Applejack was disappointed. She didn't want the conversation to end. She could talk to her for hours.
"Alright."
Applejack watched her as she pulled her head back into the room, closing the window. She smiled at Applejack.
Applejack then remembered to give her her number. She held a finger, telling her to wait. She pulled her head back inside, closing the window. She made sure the girl was still there before hurrying over to her desk. She grabbed a washable marker and went back to the window. Skittles was still standing there, waiting.
Applejack scribbled her phone number onto the glass. She looked up at Skittles, smiling. Skittles pulled out her phone. She typed in the number. A few seconds later, Applejack heard a notification ring from her phone.
She looked down at the phone on her hand. She unlocked her phone and looked at the text.
Hey, blondie :)
Applejack looked out her window over at Skittles who was smiling shyly back at her. AJ looked back at her phone and typed a response.
AJ: Hey. My name's Applejack, in case you're wondering. But you can call me AJ. Can I tell you something??
Applejack l looked up at Skittles then back at her phone. Her phone buzzed, a new text appearing.
Skittles: Sure
Applejack hesitated. She glanced up at Skittles before she typed.
AJ: I think you're beautiful 😳 and you're pretty cool to talk to
She looked up to see Skittles looking at her. She shrugged, grinning. The other girl looked down at her phone and Applejack did the same.
Skittles: do you like girls??
Applejack hoped to God the other girl wouldn't turn her away at the answer
AJ: yeah. I'm lesbian
Skittles: me too!! 😃 gay buddies!!
Applejack laughed out loud. She looked at Skittles, covering her mouth, trying to control her laughter. A new text grabbed her attention.
Skittles: you don't need even know me. If you did, you wouldn't want anything to do with me.
Applejack frowned. Looked out the window. Skittles was looking right at her. Applejack couldn't tell what emotion she had on her face because of the sunglasses. Applejack typed a response without a second thought.
AJ: I don't have to know you to tell that you're beautiful, caring and funny. I don't care who you really are. A person's background don't make up the person. I don't judge someone by their background or family's background. All I know is that I like you even though I don't know you. I just do and nothing you say will change that. Kinda intense for someone you only met a few days ago, but it's how I feel.
Applejack hit send and looked up. She saw Skittles reading the message. She smiled. It was beautiful. Applejack felt good inside that she made this girl smile.
A text made her look back down on her phone.
Skittles: you're a real pain in my ass. But it's the good kind of pain. I'm telling you, though. You don't want to get mixed up with me. Last chance to back out. I gotta go eat dinner. Can't have my dad see me texting you, so I'll talk when I get back
Applejack looked up. She nodded. She saw the girl turned around and take off her sunglasses. She walked away from the window, leaving Applejack starting at darkness.
Applejack lowered her phone with a quiet sigh. She went over to her bed. She decided to get ready for bed. It was about ten o'clock, which was a strange time to have dinner, but Applejack didn't wanna judge.
She got ready for bed. She called Twilight and told a her a little about her conversation with Skittles. Afterwards, she just watched videos on YouTube for a while, her bedroom lights off.
As she was in the middle of watching a let's play, a text popped up in her screen.
Skittles: Hey, pretty girl. By the way........ thanks. You're my first friend in a very long time. I don't leave this house for anything so I haven't talked to anyone my age in so long. I know we just met, but......You make me feel normal and like everything in my life is ok. I feel like I'm free now that I have you
Applejack felt honored and humbled at her words. She had no idea one conversation with someone she just met could surface such feelings. Applejack smiled and texted back immediately.
AJ: Hey. I honestly don't know what to say. I'm honored you feel that way about me.
Skittles: I think you're really beautiful, too. And I don't want to stop talking to you. I kinda wanna be friends......... we shouldn't. We really shouldn't..... but I want to........ am I crazy??
She wants to be friends!! Score!! Applejack was finally getting somewhere with this girl. She smiled so wide, she felt like her face might break.
AJ: Of course not. I wanna be friends, too. You don't have to tell me anything about you. Not your real name, your age. You don't have to tell me about your family or if you even have a job, which I'm assuming you don't which I could be wrong. Nothing. We can just chat and you tell me anything you want and I won't pry for information. Promise. If it's better for me to know as little about you as possible, then I'll take your word for it. But on one condition
Skittles: what??
Applejack knew she was probably asking for trouble, but she didn't really care. She just wanted her safe.
AJ: If you ever need help, for anything, call me if you're ever in trouble. Okay?? I'll be there
Skittles didn't text back a for a few minutes. Applejack was scared she had scared her off. She was about to put her phone away to go to sleep when a new text came in.
Applejack looked at the screen.
Skittles: can't promise you that. trust me, I'd rather not get you involved in anything that'll get you in some serious trouble. I'm trying to protect you from getting hurt....... or worse....
Applejack knew what she meant by worse. Killed. Dead. Applejack was starting to question herself if this was a good idea. Being friends with someone who might get her killed. It was very very risky and stupid.
Then she thought, imagine how she must feel. Not having anyone to turn to or talk to to make her feel better about whatever it is going on in her life. She must be so lonely. Especially since her dad is a prick.
Applejack then decided right then and there. No turning back. She would risk it all to be this girl's friend. Even if it killed her. No questions asked. She was sticking around.
AJ: fine. But I'm sticking around. Don't think you can get rid of me so easily. I can be just as stubborn as the next guy. You got yourself a friend, Skittles 😊
Applejack felt good inside. She gained a new, very closed off and mysterious, friend. She could tell her life would only get more interesting from here on out.
So yeah. I hope that this met the expectations of the person who requested this. Comment your thoughts on this chapter :)
