Interlude in Pyrite
The world is on fire.
Waves of gold and amber scorch the land beneath me, giving off such intense heat that I feel like I'm melting. I can't tell where I am. In the distance, I see the Statue of Liberty, never wavering. Further than that is the Empire State Building, and Rockefeller Center.
Storms are clashing around Manhattan.
But it's just fire around me. Suddenly, the flames lurch up. And I run.
I don't know where I'm going. I just know I need to escape. The smoke is tearing at my lungs, so I keep my head tucked down. And then, suddenly, I run into something as cold as ice.
"Artemis Julia Hood," the something says, and I feel a jolt of familiarity. "So we meet again."
It's her, the woman of light. I stumble backwards, trying not to get caught up in her silken robes, but finding the only other place to go is the fire.
"What do you want?" I ask.
"You know who you are now," she says with her thousand voices. "Now you must choose who you want to be."
"I don't know what you're talking about."
"I'm talking about the world, daughter of song. You can have it, if you make the right decision."
She sweeps closer to me, but I feel stuck to the spot. Like my feet have melted into the ground.
"Don't chase the sun, child." The woman gives me a smile. "Instead, shoot for the stars."
Make good choices, she'd said. Now, shoot for the stars. Does this woman know how corny she sounds?
I don't get a chance to ask her. She fades back into the flames. And then the fire takes me over, until all the world is dark again.
