Interlude in Pine Wood
I'm running again.
I can't quite tell where I am, or why I'm running, but I am. Trees line my path, big oaks and maples and conifers, whose needles filter sunlight until it lands red on the copper ground below.
I'm not alone. Kiera is next to me, her dark eyes filled with fireworks of adrenaline as her Dr Martens pound the dirt.
Although I don't turn around to look at them, I somehow know Aria is behind us, and behind her, Lucas. And behind him is something dangerous. Something ancient.
Yet, out of nowhere, I stop in my tracks after only a few seconds, as if I'm being controlled by an unseen puppeteer.
Maybe I am. Someone has their hands on my head, holding me in place as I watch my aquaintances blur past me, leaving me nearly by myself in an unfamiliar terracotta-tinted forest. I can't move. I can't move.
Whoever has cast a spell on me, the being standing behind me, drops their hands and comes around my side to look me in the eyes. My skin goes hot.
It's the woman - the one with skin like clouds and hair like pure light. She's wearing that same long white and silver dress, a strange contradiction to the pine wood around me.
"Daughter of Song..." she says sadly, as if I'm a student who's just failed a class and she's the frustrated teacher. "You have not made good choices."
"Uh, excuse me?"
"I told you, do not work with my brother's grandson. And yet... you did. Despite everything."
I try to step forward, but she holds me in place with her eyes.
"I don't understand what you're trying to tell me," I whisper, my voice suddenly becoming hoarse. "I never have."
The woman laughs softly, but her frown doesn't leave her face. "You will soon. You'll see."
She closes her eyes. When she opens them again, they're like pure, heavenly light.
And then, the forest disappears, and everything is silver and clean and burning cold.
