Giant zombie chicken
Ink's P.O.V
In the dream...heh, funny, right? Dream? Get it? Never mind. I stood in a bright field of flowers. The grass was a healthy green, the flowers stood tall and proud with all kinds of colours. To me, it was something out of a fantasy. I've only ever seen anything like this when I was being delivered to the arena. I was able to catch a glimpse through a small gap in the door of the truck as we passed the field. It was full of glory, one of the only things left standing after the start of the apocalypse. The art of nature was something no human or monster would ever be able to catch exactly through their own art. You can try and try, but the real thing stands the proudest. Never will nature be overcome my humanity.
Even now, if the current life on earth will never be able to survive, what we built would become like a natural environment. Everything will be returned to the earth that we took it from, nature will take over again. When natures done, there will be no trace of humans or monsters. A right and just fate for what we've done to the world we called home. In a way, it's a scary thought, in another way, it's comforting.
But, the clouds covered the sky, it started raining, and the flowers wilted. Zombies stumbled out of the shadows. Not just any zombies, but the infected form of my friends. Blueberry, Fell, Error, all of them. But the one who stood out the most was a tall skeleton, wearing a ripped, orange hoodie. His bones were chipped and rotten, with old bone marrow and blood seeping from them. He was covered in bite marks. It was Papyrus, Blueberry's taller, yet younger brother.
"Why..." He groaned. "You left me to die...why..."
I opened my mouth to speak, but no words came. I tried to run, but I couldn't move. I tried to close my eye sockets, but I couldn't look away.
"Why did you run...why didn't you stay..."
I wanted to scream 'I wanted to help', but still nothing. I could only stare up in fear as he and the other zombies continued towards me with their semi-clumsy limping.
"You want your freedom..." One of the zombies said. "The only freedom here is in death..."
The zombified version of Fell stopped in front of me. "Join us...it's not so bad..."
I managed to shake my head, no, and step back. Fell smiled a toothy smile, his empty eye sockets staring right into my soul. It's just a dream. A dream turned into a nightmare.
Heheh...get it?
I woke up to Blueberry shaking me. I shot up, panting and sweating.
"It's just a dream, it's just a dream, it's just a dream." I repeated in my mind. "Just...just a dream..."
I looked around at the other's in the bus, everyone was asleep, but most importantly, untouched by the zombie infection. Just when you begin to feel safe, you're reminded of where you really are. There was a cold breeze flowing through the room, it was still night outside.
"Ink, are you ok?" Blueberry asked, wearing a worried expression.
I nodded quickly, taking a deep breathe. "Yeah, I just had a nightmare, that's all."
Blueberry hugged me quickly, I hugged back and pulled him onto my lap. He always knows when I need a hug. My breathing soon returned to normal. After a couple minutes, Blueberry pulled away from the hug. He still looked worried.
"Um...Ink?"
"What's wrong?" I asked.
Blueberry pointed up at the small ledge above the opposite rows of seats, where bags would normally be stored if this were a public bus. Up there was the shadow of what looked like a large bird. I couldn't see too much detail, but it's eye glowed in the dark. It was staring at us, studying us. It wasn't cautious or frightened, it was almost like it wanted to be there. It was too big to be Chip.
"I-I think it might b-be an owl." Blueberry stuttered.
"How did it get in here?" I asked.
"I don't know...I woke up and it was just...watching us."
I wanted to examine the bird closer, so I reached slowly and cautiously for the torch in my sash. I pointed it at the bird and turned it on. Sure enough, it was an owl. But there was something different about it. Something terrible. It's feathers were all dirty and all over the place. It didn't even have that many feathers on it's body, or much of a body at all. It was rotten, dead yet moving, a zombie. It's horribly mangled beak opened into a loud squawk and it's wings spread into a threatening position. The squawk was loud enough to wake almost everyone in the bus.
"What the heck's going on?" Fell asked, not looking very happy about being woken up.
At that moment, the zombie owl jumped off the ledge and glided quickly to Fell, letting out it's talons and scratching at his face. Fell cried out and tired to get the owl off of him, but the owl seemed determined.
"Oh for crying out loud- who let a zombie in the bus!?" Nightmare yelled, angry.
I looked up at the trapdoor in the roof of the bus and realised, I forgot to close it before we went to sleep. To make matters worse, there were a dozen other owls staring into the bus from the trapdoor, all of them now squawking and shrieking. Nightmare grabbed the owl that was attacking Fell with a tentacle and crushed it with pure strength. Fell had his hands over his face, covering the bloody scratches that the owl had made. Then, all the other owls flew into the bus and started attacking people by random.
Everyone took action. Killer and Dust took out a knife they had on them at all times and swung at the semi-fleshless birds. Horror took out an axe from, well, nobody actually knows where he keeps getting the axe from, but he grabbed it and sliced an owl cleanly in half. Dream summoned a bow with magic blue arrows and expertly shot three of the birds as they went to swoop him. Error used his strings to grab two birds and slice them to pieces. I quickly grabbed a paintbrush and used it to swing a large amount of paint onto an owl coming towards me. The paint hardened quickly and the owl fell to the ground, still screeching, but unable to do anything about it.
Three more owls left. Geno didn't grab any weapons, he just punched an owl out of the air. Because of it's weak, decomposing body, it's neck snapped in half and was thrown off it's body. Fell wasn't able to see another owl coming at him, but luckily Sci was there with a baseball bat and he whacked it to the ground and smashed it. The last owl was taken out by Reaper, who grabbed it by it's wing, ripped it in half and threw it back out the trapdoor in the roof. No more birds left.
"Man, this place is going to need a clean up." Error said, un-summoning his blue strings.
Nightmare growled and stomped up to me, grabbing me by my neck with a tentacle.
"You idiot, we could've died because of you!" He snapped.
"I-I didn't m-mean to!" I managed to choke out.
"Brother, let him go! It was a simple mistake!" Dream argued.
Nightmare glared at me, but let me go, shoving me backwards in the process. Blueberry managed to catch me before I tripped.
"Do that again and I swear I'll throw you off this bus myself." Nightmare threatened.
I didn't say anything. I couldn't, because our battle wasn't over yet. We heard something land on the roof, something big. It poked it's big, vulture-like head through the trapdoor and screeched angrily at us. Again, a big bird, who's body was rotting from the inside out. It only had one working eye, the other was hanging out of it's head by the fleshy cord.
"S**t, it's a giant zombie chicken!" Horror yelled.
That made the big bird even angrier, being falsely identified. It jumped down into the bus, it's wings open into a similar, aggressive position as the first owl. It was revealing it's true size. It was the size of a fully grown human male! The thing stank to say the least, but at the same time, it was freaking terrifying.
"Horror, you made the giant zombie chicken mad!" Killer blamed.
The so called 'giant zombie chicken' charged at Killer and leaped onto him, pecking at his face and flapping it's wings wildly. Error used his strings to grab the massive bird and fling it across the bus. From there, Nightmare used his tentacles to secure it's neck, wings and claws. But it was stronger then it looked and easily broke out, it's next target? Nightmare. Nightmare was knocked backwards by the bird before being jumped on, just like with Killer. It managed to bite into his shoulder and rip a huge chunk of it out. Nightmare cried out in pain.
Dream readied an arrow in his bow, but the bird quickly swung it's wing around and knocked the bow out of his hand. As if he had seen his master being eaten alive in front of him, Buddy snapped into a protective attitude that was completely unlike his normal self. The medium-sized dog leaped at the bird and bit down on it's neck. Buddy then begun to shake his head violently, attempting to rip the bird apart. It worked, the bird's neck was fragile and Buddy managed to rip it off. The bird went limp with one last dying squawk, both the head and the body. As soon as it did, Cross climbed up the ladder and shut the trapdoor, locking it.
"Geez, this is a disaster." Fell said, still covering his scratched face.
Sci grabbed a first aid kit and took out a small cloth, which he used to carefully wipe away the blood and bone marrow. Horror dusted himself off.
"I think that was a pretty decent workout. Something new for once." He said.
"This isn't a joke, you idiot! We could've died!" Nightmare scolded, clutching his shoulder as it regenerated with the rest of his body's black goop.
"Brother," Dream said coldly. "Calm down."
Nightmare huffed, looking down at the ground. Only now did FC appear.
"What happened here?" She asked.
"Don't tell me you slept through that whole thing." Dust said.
"OK, I won't then."
Nightmare let out a frustrated yell and stormed off to the back of the bus. Dream sighed softly and gently scratched Buddy behind his ear. Killer watched Nightmare as he went by, actually seeming a little worried. I held Blueberry close once again, both of us needing the reassurance.
"Look." Lust said, looking out a window.
Everyone looked. The sun was raising, from that we could see hundreds, maybe thousands of those owls watching us from the trees surrounding the road. There could've been a much bigger fight coming our way. And it all would've been my fault...
