---Nightmare's POV----

Ah Christmas.

What used to be a time of lights, dressing up, presents and cheer, had now been practically reversed by the apocalypse.

This is was the first Christmas of the apocalypse. And for the first time in forever, all the streets were bare. No shopping music blasted from shops. There were no Christmas trees showing through the windows of houses. And there were no Christmas tourists anywhere to be seen.

The mansion wasn't very Christmassy either. We didn't have a tree. We didn't have any lights. And we didn't even have any presents to give to each other. The only thing we did have, were the few five Christmas jumpers we'd found up in the attic.

Because I'm a dick, I let everyone else wear them. I personally have always hated Christmas. But Horror, Killer and Error were acting know like little kids over it. Dust was a bit miserable -like me- but we had managed to convince him to wear one of the ugly Christmas jumpers.

Normally I wouldn't even bother to buy people Christmas presents, with the small exception of Dream. But this year, for the first time ever, I really wanted to find a Christmas present for someone. How perfect, the one time when no one can get anything for each other is the time when I decide that I want go get someone something.

Who was that someone that I suddenly wanted to get a present for? The answer is simple.

Cross.

The smol little bean deserves something for Christmas. And unlimited kisses and cuddles doesn't count.

"Still stressing Nightmare?"

I jolted, waking myself from my thoughts as I looked over at Killer, who was leant against the doorframe in front of me. I had been in so much thought, that I hadn't even realised I'd walked halfway across the living room.

Killer snickered, he smirked, rolling his eyes. "Chill, Nightmare. No ones getting anything for anyone. It's not like we all have presents for each other and you're the only one that doesn't."

"Well it feels like that!" I groaned. "I want to get something for Cross!"

"Aww, how cute~ Also I'm touched over the fact that you don't care about getting the rest of us stuff."

"Oh shut up Killer." I growled before exhaling shakily. "It's fucking Christmas Eve. I don't want to get him something, I need to get him something."

"Welp. I can't help you." He said, smirking. "Besides, my present to all of you will be Christmas dinner."

Surprisingly, Killer is actually a really good cook. He can make some bland ingredients into a truly delicious meal. So I know we're all looking forwards to whatever he's going to cook up tomorrow.

"Well I don't have anything."

"Have you searched the house? I'm sure there must be loads of things round here you could find and give to him."

"I've searched..." I muttered. "But nothing is right..."

"Well, its your fault for being picky." He muttered, rolling his eyes.
"Have fun panicking, it's already nine. Soon you'll be going to sleep."

"I'm not going to sleep till I've found something." I sighed, glancing out of the window. It was already pitch black outside, only the ghostly white light of the moon illuminating the tips of the trees of the forest to the mansion's right.

"Well, imma go up to bed. Good luck." Killer started walking off, humming to himself when suddenly an ear shattering screech came from outside, making the two of us jump a few foot up in the air.

"What the hell was that?!"

The two of us both rushed over to the nearest window, immediately peering out as we tried to see what could have made that noise.

"It's too dark to see anything..." Killer muttered, narrowing his eyes in concentration.

"Do you wanna go have a look...?" I asked, already walking over to our gun table and grabbing a revolver. "I mean, personally, I don't want to have to kill anything on Christmas."

Killer jumped over by my side, grabbing a flashlight. "Sure. It'll be quick if it's a zombie anyway. Just a shot to the head."

I nodded, unlocking the main defences for the front door. "You scan the area with the flashlight. As far as I know, I've never heard a zombie make that noise..."

"True...That really didn't sound like a zombie..." Killer muttered, gulping as I pushed open the door.

We both stepped out, shivering at the crisp cold air. It kind of smacked us in the face (how cold it was). The mansion was quite warm inside because of the fireplace in the living room. But out here, it was just cold and dark.

Killer fumbled with the flashlight for a minute before finally managing to turn it on, its beam sweeping across the front garden and behind the gates. "...I don't see anything..."

I narrowed my eye, glancing about as well. "Neither do I..."

And then, a little to the left of where we were looking, another weak screech rang out.

We both jolted, immediately making the flashlight beam swipe over to where the noise had come from.

In the centre of the light, a small lump was sat, now quacking softly.

"Uh..."

I stepped forwards, blinking rapidly. It had somehow managed to get inside our gate defences. But now it looked like it had given up. It was covered in blood, and looked terrified.

What was it?

A peacock.

Not those blue ones with massive beautiful tail feathers. It was brown and Kréme coloured. So a female peacock.

"Is that a bird?" Killer called, blinking rapidly.

"Uh, a peacock." I called back, slowly edging closer.

The peacock panicked slightly as I walked over, letting out feeble screeches as it tried to stumble back.

"Calm down." I muttered awkwardly, not exactly sure how to comfort a dying peacock. "We're here to help."

It cocked its head to the side, quacking.

Deciding to fuck all, I just scooped it into my arms, ignoring its terrified screeches of pain and protest. Turning around, I walked back to Killer, thinking.

Cross always did say he'd like a pet... And he once told me he loved birds...

Killer blinked rapidly, looking at the peacock as it viciously pecked at one of my tentacles. "Uh... Are we keeping it...?"

I smirked widely, nodding my head as I glanced back down at the peacock, who was currently having a death stare competition with my tentacle. "Oh yes. We're definitely keeping her. Now I actually have something for Crossy."

---Cross' POV----

At this point, I was having a hard time staying awake. But I won't go to sleep without Nightmare. For multiple reasons.

One, I won't get to feel my 'nighttime snuggles' as he calls them.
And two, I can't actually physically sleep without him. Any time I do, horrible memories of what happened all those months ago would come flooding back, tormenting me until I wake up screaming.

I was currently sat up on the bed, my eyes half-lidded. I knew that if I laid down on the bed properly, I'd be asleep in an instant. So sitting up was part of my pathetic hope of not falling asleep.

Just as I was about to give up, the door handle clicked down and the door was pushed open, revealing none other than my tall, dark, tentacled lover.

"Nighty!" I greeted, sleepiness laced heavily in my voice and actions as I stumbled out of bed and collapsed into his chest.

He chuckled, wrapping his arms around my waist and kissing the top of my skull. "Have I kept you waiting?"

I whined, nodding. Being pressed against his warm body was just making me even sleepier.

He seemed to notice, and scooped me up into his arms before walking over to the bed, pulling the blankets back as he laid down, shifting me to his side.

I purred sleepily, immediately snuggling up to his side. "Mmm...you're so warrrmmm..."

"Really? That's odd, I've just been outside."

"You have?" I blinked, looking up at him. "Why?"

"Reasons. Don't worry about it." He whispered, wrapping his arms and tentacles around me as he hummed softly. "Just sleep, its Christmas tomorrow, remember?"

My eyes widened and I nodded quickly, burying my face in his chest. I'd been so caught up with trying to stay awake, that I'd somehow completely managed to forget that tomorrow morning was Christmas.

Nightmare chuckled, nuzzling me. "Don't I get a goodnight kiss~?"

I blushed softly, huffing as I pulled my face away from his chest and leaned up, kissing him softly.

He purred, pulling me closer as his tentacles tucked the blankets in around us softly before pulling back. "Good boy~ Now sleep."

I nodded drowsily, going limp in his arms as I closed my eyes.

I fell asleep in seconds.

---Nightmare's POV----

I woke up this morning a little different to the way I normally do.

Normally, I just wake up naturally, letting the harsh light of the sun stream through my half shut curtains to wake me up.

But this morning, I was awoken by something jumping up and down on my chest.

"Nighty wake up! It's Christmas!"

I groaned loudly, shoving Cross off of me and back to his side of the bed. Yeah, I wasn't really ready to wake up just yet.

"Niiiggghhhtttttyyy...!" He whined loudly, tugging at my arm.

"Croooooossssssyyyy...!" I whined back, batting him away.

"It's Christmas Nightmare! You can't sleep in!"

I smirked slightly, suddenly wrapping my arms around him and pulling him into my chest, ignoring his squirming. "I'll sleep in whenever I want."

"Nuuuuuuu..."

"Yeeessssss..."

I snickered, deciding to end his suffering by sitting up with a yawn. "Mmm...remind me why you're so excited?" I teased.

"It's Christmas!"

"Is it?"

"Yes!"

I laughed, scooping him into my arms before tickling him. "I'm just kidding with you, of course I know it's Christmas. Now go get on one of those ugly Christmas sweaters."

"They're not ugly!" He protested, whining as I slid him out of my arms.

"Maybe yours isn't, but everyone else's are." I muttered, watching as he suddenly gasped and ran over to the window, pulling back the curtains.

"IT'S SNOWED!!!"

"Huh?" I dragged myself off of bed, blinking curiously. "Has it?"

"Look!" He dragged me over to the window, his pupils stars.

It had snowed. A blanket of white covered the whole expanse of the outside world, covering up the decayed land, dusting over the trees, and icing the gates.

"...wow."

Cross was squealing nonsense, jumping up and down as he ran to our shared wardrobe, pulling out his Christmas sweater.

It was a red sweater, with the cheesy slogan of 'I've been a good boy this year' sewn out across its front in curly italic writing. Personally, I think it's not the worst sweater we managed to find.

"So, have you been a good boy~?" I purred, pulling him into my chest once he had it on.

He blushed, nodding softly as he looked up at me with that innocent expression I'm so obsessed with. "Y-Yes."

I chuckled, kissing his burning cheek softly. "Do you deserve any presents for Christmas~?"

He nodded, looking hopeful suddenly. "H-Have you got me a present?"

"Maybe."

He squeaked, hugging me tight. "Should we go downstairs?"

"Sure." I hummed, suddenly scooping him into my arms bridal style. "Come on my waifu, lets go."

"W-Waifu?!"

"Yup." I laughed, carrying him out of the room and downstairs. "You're my waifu. My smol waifu."

He whined, burying his face in my chest as I walked into then living room. Everyone else was already there.

Killer was sat down cross-legged by the fire, letting its warmth wash over him as he hummed, reading a book.

Horror was curled up on his designated sofa, whistling jingle bells as he sharpened his axe.

Error had fallen back asleep, snoring softly on his sofa.

And Dust was eating a sandwich.

"Look who dragged in Mr and Mrs Clause." Dust muttered, smirking as he took a bite of his sandwich.

I snorted, making my way over to Cross and my sofa before flopping down on it, keeping the smol to my chest. "Ha ha, very funny. Merry Christmas."

Killer glanced over at us, smirking. "Nightmare I wanna start cooking soon, so could you please vacate your present somewhere other than the kitchen?"

At the sound of the word 'present', Cross sat up straighter, looking up at me as he blinked rapidly.

"Yes, that's your present." I said, smirking. "You can go get it now, if you want."

Cross immediately sprang off of my lap, running over to the kitchen. "Why's it in here? Is it alive?"

"You'll find out!" I called, flopping back onto the sofa with a sigh.

"What did you get him?" Horror asked, blinking curiously.

Killer laughed. "So you know how I told you about finding that peacock last night with Nightmare?"

"Yeah?"

"That's what he's giving Cross."

"Wait-- Really?."

No sooner than he'd said that a loud, high pitched squeal rang out from the kitchen.

"Well that sounds like a decent reaction." Killer muttered, grinning.

Incoherent squealing nonsense came from the kitchen, followed by quacking noises before Cross stumbled back into the room, something in his arms.

"I-Is she for me?!" He asked, his pupils turning into stars once more.

"Yep." I said, glancing up at him.

The peacock looked a little better than she had been last night. Before going to sleep, I'd washed her feathers clean of the blood. She was screeching at me the whole time, but couldn't do much against me because of her broken leg and wing.

"Thank you!" Cross squealed, hugging her to his chest and nuzzling her.

"You'll have to heal her though. We think she has a broken wing, and a broken leg." I muttered, patting the spot next to me.

Cross' expression immediately turned to one of concern as he looked down at her, frowning. "What happened to her?"

I shrugged. "Dunno. Found her last night out in the garden. Somehow she'd managed to get past the gates, but she must have been too weak to get any further."

He sat down next to me, petting the peacock. Upon closer inspection, you could see that one of her wings was indeed broken. It seemed twisted and jarred, even though I cleaned it last night, fresh blood had dried around it. And you could clearly see her left leg was broken.

Cross pet her, whispering softly to the semi-distressed peacock as he gently rested one of his hands on her broken wing, starting to heal it up.

She let out a trill of alarm at first from the feeling, struggling weakly. But seeing as Cross wouldn't let her go, she went limp, quacking sadly in discomfort.

Cross hummed, nuzzling her as he let his magic touch heal her up.

Soon enough, the peacock seemed to realise that Cross was healing her and went limp, closing her eyes.

"She's so cute..." Cross whispered, running his free hand -the one that wasn't healing her- across her head feathers softly.

"Mmhm." I watched, blinking as Cross gently spread out her wings to check for any more damage.

The peacock trilled in protest at first, but upon seeing that her wing was completely fine, she blinked rapidly, letting out a screech of confusion.

Cross laughed, petting the top of her head. "What a good girl you are. Now I'm gonna heal your leg, okay?"

She tilted her head to the side, looking up at him with her dark eyes, blinking.

"That's yes in peacock language!" Horror called, snickering.

Cross rolled his eyes gently taking hold of her broken leg before rubbing uh softly, letting his magic flow.

She hissed in discomfort and pain before pecking viciously at his hand.

"Ow!" Cross yelped, pulling his hand back. "I'm trying to help!"

"Leave it Crossy." I said, sitting back up to lean against him. "It's slightly healed now, so let her walk about on a slightly aching leg."

Cross sighed, nodding as he ran his fingers down her feathers. "Okay then."

The peacock seemed to huff, looking at all of us distastefully before hopping off of Cross' lap and onto the floor. Her still damaged leg collapsed beneath her, and she fell, screeching in confusion. She'd probably forgotten it was broken.

Cross flinched, but didn't go after her, shifting onto my lap instead as we watched her pull off the thin blanket that had been on Error before limping over to the fireplace. She shoved the blanket together, making a sort of nest before flopping down, shivering at the warmth the fire gave off.

"That's one sassy peacock." Horror muttered, snorting.

"Mmhm." I nodded, looking down at Cross and kissing his neck softly. "You need to name her."

Cross nodded, narrowing his eyes in thought as he eyed up the peacock. "I'll think..."

"Okay." I yawned, cuddling him closer. "Well then Killer, you can go cook whatever marvel you've been working on."

Killer laughed, standing up as he looked at the peacock. "You know... We don't have a Christmas turkey, so Christmas peacock anyone~?"

Cross immediately stiffened, throwing a cushion at him. "NO!"

Killer yelped, stumbling back as the cushion hit him square in the face. He fell back, managing to land on Error before rolling off and collapsing on the ground.

Error cried out in pain, waking up thanks to that. "H-Huh?!"

Killer immediately jumped to his feet, scrambling out of the room to the kitchen. "Ohwellnevermindguysbyeee!"

I snorted in amusement, glancing back over at the peacock.

She was looking at all of us with an expression of almost disgust. The kind of expression a Queen gives her subjects when she catches her subjects doing something they shouldn't be.

Cross was obviously thinking the same thing as me, because he suddenly sat up straighter on my lap, clapping his hands together. "Queenie!"

"Hm?" I blinked.

"I'm gonna call her Queenie!" He said, smiling happily as he looked at her.

Queenie blinked, cocking her head to the side before quacking softly and flopping down on her side, getting comfy in the nest.

"Yeah, I think she likes that name." Horror grunted, placing his axe down on the floor beside his feet. "Now, can we eat her?"

"No!" Cross hissed, looking like he wanted to stab him. "Don't you dare even touch her!"

"Yikes!" Horror held his hands up in surrender. "Alright, alright! I won't touch her!"

"Good." Cross huffed, burying his face into my chest.

I chuckled, rubbing his back softly as I kissed his neck, making him shiver. "So do you like your present?"

He nodded softly, purring as I pet him. "I love it... Thanks, Nighty."

Horror let out a loud "Awwwww~!" But we ignored him, rolling our eyes.

"Mmm... After we've eaten whatever Killer cooks up, we can go out and play in the snow." Error mumbled, shaking the sleepiness from his skull as he sat up.

Cross nodded happily, fidgeting on my lap. "Yay! Nighty, you'll join us in the snow, right?" He asked, looking up at me hopefully.

"U-Uh--"

"Of course he will." Dust said, smirking widely. "We'll even drag him out if we have to."

I groaned, flopping down on the sofa, bringing Cross with me onto my chest. "You're all going to kill me..."

"Having fun won't kill you, Nighty." Cross whined, poking my cheek.

"Mmm..."

"Please?"

"..."

"Pretty please?"

"..."

He huffed before smirking and leaning down to whisper in my ear. "You let us have fun in the snow, and I'll let us have your fun later~"

I blushed slightly, looking up at him before chuckling and kissing his lightly purple cheek. "Alright then, Crossy~"

He blushed, purring happily as I nuzzled him. "Such a good boy~"

Cross squeaked, looking away quickly as his blush darkened.

"You know what?" Horror called, eyeing the two of us up. "Seeing you two constantly flirting or planning to fuck each other really makes me feel like I need to find a guy or girl to fall in love with."

Dust snorted, rolling his eyes. "As retarded as this sounds, same. You two are always so lovey-dovey. You make us feel left out, you know."

"Well why don't you just pair up with each other?" Cross asked innocently.

"Pff--" Error laughed loudly. "Hell no!"

Cross blinked, looking down. "Okay then."

Horror stretched, humming. "Maybe next time we search for supplies in the next town we raid, we could possibly find some people to join us."

"Oh yay." I muttered, rolling my eye. "Well, we won't need to raid anywhere for at least a month. So you're gonna have to stay single for a bit longer."

Horror whined, but laughed after, humming. "Oh dear. Soon enough this world will have to start building up the population again. So Cross, next time Nightmare wrecks you, which I'm assuming will be tonight, make sure you get pregnant."

"WH-WHAT?!" Cross shrieked, his face flushing an incredibly dark shade of purple.

"You heard me!"

Cross let out a muffled scream, burying his face in his hand. "N-Nightmare tell him to stop!"

I smirked, uncovering his face before tilting it up to mine. "Maybe I don't want him to stop~"

He froze up, his blush level meeter rising to its maximum shade of blush. "I-I-- Y-You--"

I laughed, kissing his burning hot check. "I'm just messing with you, Crossy."

He buried his face in my chest, muffling his screams of flusteredness and embarrassment.

Everyone laughed, watching as I wrapped my tentacles around him affectionately, humming as I kissed the top of his skull.

"You're so precious, Cross~" I cooed, still smirking widely.

"Th-Thanks..." He mumbled weakly, trying to press himself further into my chest, wanting to disappear.

"Don't be so embarrassed." I whispered, nuzzling him affectionately. "We're only teasing."

"Are we?" Horror snorted.

I went to answer when suddenly something shoved itself completely in between Cross and I, wedging itself in.

We both blinked rapidly, looking down to see none other than...

Queenie.

She quacked, snuggling between the two of us happily before looking up at Cross and pecking his hand.

Cross -who was still quite flustered from earlier- let out a yelp, clutching his hand. "What was that for?!"

She screeched, glaring up at him before somehow managing to shove him off of my lap and onto the sofa again.

"H-Hey?!" I called out in protest, only to get screeched at.

Queenie glared at me before quacking happily at Cross and flopping down on her side. She used her head to nudge Cross' hand over to her leg, blinking.

"Uh...I think she wants you to heal her..." I muttered, narrowing my eye.

Cross nodded slowly, cautiously reaching his hand down to brush over her leg lightly. "Please don't bite me..."

Surprisingly enough, she didn't, simply letting out a soft quack and closing her eyes with a sort of hum.

We all blinked in surprise, watching as Cross healed up her leg fully, smiling widely with happiness.

"We're keeping her forever." He said, looking up at me challengingly. "A peacock is for life, not just for Christmas."

"I'm pretty sure the saying is 'a puppy is for life, not just for Christmas' but sure." I snickered, patting my the top of his skull. "As long as we can keep Killer from cooking her."

Cross hugged her protectively to his chest, narrowing his eyes. "I won't let him near her."

I nodded, kissing his cheek. "Good boy."

"FOOD IS ON THE TABLE!"

We all yelped, looking over at the kitchen door to see Killer stood there, smirking.

"Welp I'm not waiting!" Horror yelled, jumping to his feet and running into the kitchen, Error close behind.

Dust rolled his eyes, also getting to his feet before walking off. "Come on love birds, or we'll eat your half of the food."

Cross immediately jumped off, placing Queenie down on the sofa before dragging me to my feet and pulling me along to the kitchen as well. "Lets go Nighty!"

I laughed, letting him pull me into the kitchen where the normally empty dining table was now decorated and laid out with gorgeous smelling food.

Killer had got out one of the old red table clothes, making the table look even fancier than it already was.

There were six places laid out on the table, each of them full of food.

"And what has Chef cooked for us today?" I asked, eyeing up the food as I took my space next to Cross.

"Well, we have roast potatoes from our little allotment patch out back, and salad from there as well with some probably-out-of-date-but-okay-smelling-gravy. Oh, and some of a jar of cranberry sauce I found in one of the cupboards." Killer said, bowing mockingly.

"Sounds delicious." Horror said, grinning widely as he picked up his knife and fork. "Makes a change from cold or hot beans every day."

We all laughed, nodding as we dug into our meal, eating our way  though Killer's meal quickly.

Surprisingly, it tasted fine. The gravy had a small off aftertaste to it, but otherwise everything tasted generally good.

"Better than expected, Killer." Error called, smirking as he bit into one of his roast potatoes.

"Thanks." Killer said, looking rather proud of himself.

Soon enough, we'd all finished, sighing happily as we leaned back in our chairs.

"You know what the only thing that could make this even better is?" Horror yawned, stretching.

"What?" We all asked, blinking curiously.

"A Christmas pudding." Horror groaned. "I remember, my mum used to make the best Christmas puddings ever."

Killer laughed, glancing over at the oven. "Well you know what, Horror? There is something currently cooking in the oven."

We all blinked rapidly, looking over at the oven immediately. There was indeed the silhouette of something cooking inside it.

"Is it the peacock?" Dust asked, only to let out a screech after as something bit his foot.

A cross quack rang out from the other side of the table before Queenie strutted into view, looking up at us curiously.

"You hungry?" Cross asked, picking up some of his left over potato and lettuce.

Queenie sat down, almost like a dog, as she looked up at the food longingly.

Giggling, Cross put the food down on a little napkin for her, seeing as the floor is quite dirty.

She immediately pecked at the food, quacking happily.

Killer laughed before looking over at the oven as it let out a ding. "Oh, it's done."

We all immediately returned our attention to Killer, watching as slipped on some oven gloves and opened it up, pulling out a tray of some sweet smelling, gorgeous looking thing.

"I-Is that?"

Killer smirked, placing it down on the table. "Christmas pudding."

Horror immediately jumped up, lunging at Killer. "My PrEcIoUs--"

----------

After we'd all filled ourselves up on Christmas pudding -what Horror would let us eat- we relaxed. That is until Cross reminded all of us that we're going out in the snow.

So here we are now.

"I'm not going out there!" I hissed, gripping onto the doorframe tightly as the guys tried to drag me out into the snow.

"C'mon Nightmare! It's just a bit of fun!"

"No! Never!"

They gripped onto me suddenly before yanking me away, tearing me from the doorframe and shoving me out into the snow.

I let out a mix of a yelp, cry of anger, shriek and curse words before stumbling down the stairs and falling face first in the snow with a thump.

Everyone cheered, running out onto the snow after me, Horror and Killer immediately flopping down to make snow angels.

I groaned, rolling onto my back to look up at the cloudy sky. The view was nice, but was soon obstructed by Cross' cute little face looking down at me.

"Are you having fun Nighty?"

I groaned, closing my eye as I felt the peacock jump onto my chest and nudge me. "I hate all of you."

"You're not allowed to hate us, it's Christmas!"

"Mmm...I'll hate you all tomorrow then." I mumbled, feeling my back slowly freeze up from the cold.

Cross huffed before letting out a small giggle and starting to shuffle about.

I didn't look up to see what he was doing. I couldn't be bothered.

But then all of a sudden something cold slammed into my face, exploding at impact.

A snowball.

I immediately jumped to my feet, hissing loudly as I looked to see who threw that.

Cross laughed nervously, taking a few steps back as he dropped the other snowball he had been holding in his hands. "N-Nighty you remember you love me--"

"Oh you better start running, Crossy." I growled, smirking widely. "You don't want to know what'll happen to you once I catch you~"

Cross let out a squeak, immediately spinning on his heals and running, me close behind. "I-I'm sorry!"

"Oh you're gonna be sorry!" I yelled, catching up easily.

"I-I love you!"

I laughed, tackling him down to the snowy ground with ease. "I love you too Crossy~"

He blushed, squirming weakly beneath me. "U-Uh, m-merry Christmas?"

I smirked, leaning down to kiss him quickly. "Merry Christmas, Crossy~"

The king let out a roar, lifting the struggling Jevil up in the air before slamming him down to the floor.

The jester let out a shriek, which was then abruptly cut off as his body collided with the cracked cobblestone floor of the courtyard.
