You made your way to the dining room as the bell for dinner rang. Standing behind the chair, you waited for your father to allow you and your siblings to eat.
Five on the right of you seemed to fidget, like he was on the edge.
"Sit."
Everyone began to eat.
Luther and Allison stared lovingly at each other when the other wasn't looking.
Ben read his book as he chowed down on his vegetables.
Diego used the knife to carve designs into the chair.
Vanya stared silently at her food.
Klaus rolled a blunt under the table.
The faces Five was making made your nervous. It looked like he was going to do something.
Bad.
He picked up the knife and stabbed it into the table, shocking everyone into silence.
"Five?"
"I have a question."
Your clothes made a soft sound when you squeezed you hand tight. "Knowledge is an admirable goal, but you know the rules. No talking during mealtimes."
Five messed with his fingernails as he glared at your father. He pushed his plate away from him. The clattering of the china halted your movements.
"I want to time travel."
"No."
Father's words only made Five stand up, pushing his chair from the table. "But I'm ready. I've been practicing my spatial jumps, just like you said." His face scrunches up and he jumped, appearing next to father.
"See?"
"A spatial jump is trivial when compared with the unknowns of time travel. One is like sliding along the ice, the other is akin to descending blindly into the depth of freezing water and reappearing as an acorn."
Father took a sip of his drink. The others awkwardly ate. You couldn't. Five was going to do something bad. Really bad. "Well, I don't get it."
"Hence the reason you are not ready."
Vanya shook her head. Her hopeless attempts to stop Five did nothing against his cocky ways.
"I'm not afraid."
"Fear isn't the issue. The effects it might have on your body, even on your mind, are far too unpredictable." Father roughly placed his utensils down. "Now, I forbid you to talk about this anymore."
"Fine."
Your chair crashed to the ground as you bolted upwards. Five began to hastily make his way outside.
"Y/n, go." Vanya knew you had a chance of stopping him.
You chased after him, hot on his trail. "Five, please don't do this!" Your small whimpers lulled him back to face you.
"I want to show him I'm ready," he said, spatial jumping through the small force field you made at an attempt to stop him.
"He'll let you, just not now," you shouted, creating another wall that he easily dodged.
"I want to, now"
You didn't know what to say, and you didn't catch him when he jumped and didn't reappear seconds after.
"Five," you shouted, running forward even if you didn't see him. "Where are you?"
You ran along the sidewalk, passing strangers that looked at you wildly.
You halted, breathing heavily.
"No, no, please! come back!" you fell to the floor as you lost him.
He wasn't here anymore.
He wasn't in this time space, anymore.
"He's-he's gone."
You awoke with a loud enough gasp for it to echo through your old bedroom. Your cold sweat collected onto your body and made the clothes from yesterday stick to you.
You got up and searched through you childhood closest for a new, cleaner set of clothing. There were plenty of uniforms from the Umbrella Academy, along with a few pieces that you stole from Allison years back.
Peeling the damp clothes from your body, you replaced them with a simple pair of grey sweats and a long-sleeved black shirt.
It bothered you to look into the mirror and smooth out your outfit.
Same, young me.
You would never look your age and that angered you.
You had messed up so badly all those years ago and you can't take that back.
"No, no, stop! Please!"
Klaus' voice sounded from out of nowhere. He sounded troubled.
You followed the sound of his whimpering and rushed down the stairs, the years of hard work came in handy as you made no noise with each step.
Klaus lays on the couch, mumbling and twitching. He wraps an arm around himself.
"Please," Klaus shouts, shooting up to rock back and forth. He doesn't try to cover himself, his one article of clothing being a brightly colored pair of underwear that seemed too small for him.
He pushed off the couch and searched through his coat that was a laid on the table next to him. "Ah, ha," he gasped, holding up a spare cigarette.
"You can't smoke eggs," Klaus said, his free hand pointing at an empty chair. You took the moment to stare at the chair.
"Ben?"
"Yup." Klaus nodded his head, he glanced at you before digging through a dresser of dad's stuff. "He's there."
There wasn't much for you to see, but you pictured Ben sitting in the seat. "Hi," you said with a wide smile.
"One of these has gotta be gold-plated, right?"
You wiped down the couch Klaus had laid on before sitting, and watching him dig through the drawers.
"Ahem."
You flinch at the sudden sound of Pogo clearing his throat. Klaus has the same reaction. "Christ on a cracker!"
"Pogo," you send him a kind nod of your head.
"My apologies, Master Klaus," Pogo says, sending back the same nod of acknowledgement. "I have a query for you."
"Oh," Klaus exclaimed in surprise.
You ready yourself by covering your mouth with your hands to stop any laughter that might burst out.
"Items from you father's office have gone missing. In particular, an ornate box with pearl inlay."
"Really?"
Klaus leans over the back on the couch with an expression of mock surprise. "You don't say."
Liar
"Any idea where it went," Pogo speaks softly, his face telling he pretty much knows it's Klaus' fault the box is gone.
"No, no, no. No idea."
Klaus looks down to the empty spot in the chair and says, "would you shut up!"
"Excuse me," Pogo looks offended and takes a step back, thinking Klaus meant it towards him.
"Pogo, I didn't mean you, I just..."
Unable to stop yourself from laughing, you excuse yourself from the room and head up the stairs, letting your laugh slip through your lips.
"Y/n!"
You flinch when Five pulls you aside suddenly.
"Follow me, I need your help."
You want to ask what he needs, but there's a call for him somewhere in the house. He cursed to himself and shoved you onto his bed. "W-Woah, Five! Wait, I-I," he cuts you off by throwing a pillow next to you.
"Pretend to sleep."
What?
You give him a questionable look but still slide the blankets over your body and turn to the side, 'sleeping',
"Oh, thank god!"
It's Vanya.
"I was worried sick about you."
"Sorry, I left without saying goodbye."
Had he went to visit her? You don't remember him leaving after you both went back to the house. Maybe after I feel asleep he-
"No, no. I should be sorry. I was dismissive, and... I-I guess I didn't know how to process what you were saying."
Your eyebrows pulled together.
What did he tell her?
"Maybe you were right to be dismissive. Maybe it wasn't real after all."
Real? What might've not been real?
There was a dip in the bed as Five sat down, you could feel his body heat through the blanket. You shifted in your 'sleep'.
"The old man did say time travel could contaminate the mind."
Oh.
Had he told her about what he say when he left? He hasn't said a word to you, but maybe, just maybe, he explained some things to Vanya.
"Then maybe I'm not the right person for you to be talking to. Look, I used to see someone. A therapist, I could give you her information."
"Thanks, but..." he shifted in his spot. "I think I'm just gonna get some rest."
"Okay."
Her footsteps receded and she finally left the room. You're tugged from the bed by Five. "Hi," he says, the close proximity to his face makes you heat up.
He hands a pair of jeans to you and proceeds to shove you into the bathroom. "Put those on."
You quickly change into the jeans Five gave you. It's a pair from Allison's closest. In the pockets you find a twenty dollar bill and some chapstick.
These haven't been worn in a while.
"That was so touching... all that stuff about dad and time," you hear Klaus say, followed by the clattering of items.
"Would you shut up? She'll hear you."
"I'm moist."
You grimace and zip up the fly.
"I thought I told you to put on something professional," Five says.
You open the bathroom door and step out.
Five is still in his uniform and Klaus is dressed in a patterned blouse that have ruffles on the sleeves. His pants have cutouts and he paired them with a set of boots. "This is my nicest outfit."
"Come on, Y/n." Five pulls you by your sleeve and you stumble over your feet. What is going on, you wanted to ask. And when did Five have time to talk to Klaus?
"What are we doing," you ask, pulling away from Five. Klaus wraps an arm around your shoulders.
"We're finding out who this belongs to," Five says, showing you a prosthetic eye. He doesn't even turn back to look at you as he holds it up.
You blink.
H-How does one get a fake eye...?
"Yes, but," Klaus interjects with a raised finger. "Finer details: I need to go into this place and pretend to be your dear old dad, correct?"
"Yeah, something like that."
"What our cover story," Klaus asks. "Like, how young was I? Sixteen, and terribly misguided?"
You don't question it, only give a small shrug of your shoulders. Klaus claps his hands, his arm still around your neck so you flinch when the action happens right before your face.
"Your mother, that slut! We met...at...," he then snaps the fingers of the hand not around you. "The disco. Oh, my god, the sex was amazing."
Five turns around and pushes Klaus's arm off from your shoulders. "What a disturbing glimpse into that brain of yours."
"Don't make me put you in time-out."
luther placed you onto the soft floor with great care, terrified of hurting you. you sighed, your body sore from the use of your powers.
"It's okay," vanya whispered. Everyone had left the room, leaving the two of you alone in awkward silence. She handed you a glass of water.
You had stopped crying, cheeks now stained with dry tears.
You took the glass and gingerly took a sip.
"I couldn't stop him," you whimpered and held back tears, not wanting to cry again.
"Hey, you tried to stop him," she reassured, placing her hand over yours. She smiled, but that didn't stop the tears from filling her eyes. You took a huge gulp of the drink. "You know him. He gets cocky. He'll be back, I promise."
"I promise."
