You were glad to wake up on your own accord, no loud shoutings and no nightmares this time.
You rubbed your eyes and sat up in the bed, almost forgetting you were at Diego's. Five and Luther we're talking, Five sitting with his legs off the bed and Luther in a nearby chair.
Although you don't remember sleeping, you felt relieved that you did. I needed it. After your shower you had crawled next to Five, who was still asleep, and curled into his side. He didn't move so you got to enjoy his face and the way he looked so peaceful.
But all good things come to an end.
Diego burst into the room so harshly, the door slams into the wall. He points one of his knives at Five.
You flinch, suddenly awake and reach to put your hand on Five's shoulder.
"You little-" Diego's threat is cut short as Luther lifts him into the air easily. He struggles, feet kicking for the floor.
"I can do this as long as it takes to calm you down."
Diego gives a wheezing sigh. "Fine."
"What are you talking about," you asked, retracting your hand from Five's shoulder and standing from the bed.
"Are those my clothes?"
"Are you going to answer me?"
"He's been pretty busy since he got back," Diego said, cocking his head at Five. "He was in the middle of that shootout at Griddy's, then at Gimble Brothers, after that, the guys in masks attacked the academy, looking for him."
You wanted to speak up and say you knew that already, but you weren't ready for the consequences if you did.
"None of which is any of your concern," Five said. His face looked more alive and the dark bags were gone.
"It is now," Diego gives an aggravated frown. "They killed my friend."
There's a split second where you could see Five's look of remorse before he purses his lips to hide it.
Luther turns to Five, eyes widening and his body jerking. "Who are they, Five?"
You catch his eye as he gulps, his clasped hands tighten. "They work for my former employer."
Before he can get another word out, you cut in as everything molds together like a puzzle. Hazel and Cha-Cha were sent by the same person as Rob, the-
"The Handler."
Everyone looks at you and you freeze. Shit, I can't explain how I know that.
"Yeah," Five easily continues, but you don't miss the way his eyes narrow suspiciously.
"She sent them to stop me. Then, soon as Diego's friend got in the way, well, fair game."
"And now they're my fair game. And I'm going to see to it they pay," Diego threatens with a deep, threatening scowl.
"They've killed people far more dangerous than you," Five calls after him, a weak attempt to stop Diego.
"Yeah, we'll see about that," he said and slams the door close.
Luther turned away from the door, still standing before Five. You joined Luther at his side, idly playing with the twenty dollars you have yet to spend.
"Former employer?" Luther asked. "What's this really about?"
"Well, it's a long story."
Your head perked up and you sat on the ground, Luther sitting back in his chair. It's finally time to know the truth.
Thus, Five began explaining.
He explained how he met the Handler and what she did for him.
He explained that she gave him a five year job in exchange for getting out of the apocalypse.
He explained that he spent years eliminating targets for them, and along the way, he gathered information on how to get back.
Finally, he explained how he made it back here and broke the contract, that's why Hazel and Cha-Cha are after him.
You wanted to scream. That still doesn't explain why Rob is after me. You felt like asking Five about Rob and mentioning that you were being followed, but you didn't.
Instead, you held your words down and listened in as Five answered Luther's questions. If only mine were as simple to answer.
"So," Luther started, handing Five a plate of food and a glass of water. "You were a hit man?"
"Yes."
"Uh... I mean, you had a code, right?"
"No Code," Five said, staring down into the glass of water and washing it swish around. "We took out anyone who messed with the timeline."
Even those who were good?
"What about innocent people," you asked, eyes glued to glass Five held.
"It was the only way I could get back here," he said.
"That's murder."
"Jesus, Luther, grow up."
"He's right," you agree with Five. "We're not kids anymore and if he hadn't killed those people, they would've killed him."
"There's just people going about their lives." You could feel Five's stare as he spoke. "But when the world ends, all those people die, including our family."
A shiver runs up your spine and you clasp your hands together.
The apocalypse.
"Time changes everything."
You finally look away from the glass of hypnotizing water and stand quickly. Both Luther and Five turn to you, shocked by your sudden movement.
"I, uh, I need to...do something." You turn on your heel but a strong grip on your shoulder stopped you from moving any farther.
"What is so important," Luther asked. "You've tried you get out of finding Five to do that 'something'. It can't be that serious."
Now Five was looking at you in suspicion and you wanted to shrink back into your body.
"I-I just have my own things to fix, nothing that involves you guys." Lying out of my ass, right now.
They didn't seem convinced -at all- but you took the chance when Luther's grip softened to start walking for the door.
"I'll see you guys later, yeah?"
Neither said a word.
