It takes longer than Reine had hoped for Jimin's wounds to heal. She watches silently as the open wounds slowly close themselves, and after what feels like a lifetime, the only thing left on Jimin's body is the dried blood.
She decides not to wake him up. He needs to rest because of the blood loss, so she continues to sit next to him, trying to keep her teeth from chattering so loudly.
She has no idea how long she's been sitting here watching Jimin heal. Her body is sore from sitting in the same position for so long, and her fingers have long gone numb from the cold, but she's afraid that if she steps away for even a moment, the rising and falling of his chest may stop.
Reine's numb fingers move to run through Jimin's hair again, trying to comfort him and keep him as calm as possible until his body is ready to wake. She has no idea what exactly happened out there in the woods with the wendigo and the rebels, but she does know that he saved her life again and he may have even saved others' lives by putting himself in harm's way to keep the monster distracted from everyone else.
Jimin moves his head in his sleep, nestling it against Reine's hand as she moves her fingers through his hair, softly trying to get some of the tangles out of it because of the dried blood. She smiles to herself, her chin resting on her knee as she intertwines her free hand with one of his. She wants him to know that he's not alone anymore, and that she isn't going anywhere.
"Are you okay?" Jimin's voice sounds, though his eyes don't open. Reine's eyes widen slightly as she moves even closer to him, peering into his face.
"Jimin?" she asks, her voice shaky because of her insistent shivering. "Are you okay?"
"I asked you first," he says, the corners of his mouth turning upwards as his eyes slowly flutter open.
Reine's chin quivers as tears pool in her eyes. "I'm fine. Are you?"
"I've had better days," he says, a soft chuckle escaping his lips as he frowns slightly. "Fuck, I don't feel great."
Reine sighs, tightening her grip on his hand as her other hand comes from his hair to rest on his cheek. "You saved me again."
"No big deal," he shrugs, his eyes closing again as he slowly turns to lay on his side. Reine sits with her legs crossed, watching his every move with her breath held.
"Are you in pain?" she asks, rubbing her thumb across his cheek.
His eyes open again and zero in on her legs. With slow movements and groans of pain, he moves so his head is resting in her lap instead of on his cloak.
"Put my cloak on," he says, reaching to hand it to her with his free hand. "You're freezing."
"I'm fine," she insists, moving to place it over his exposed torso instead. "You must be cold."
"Reine," he says, his eyes opening again as he stares at her. "Put it on."
She sighs in resignation, not in the mood to argue with him. After placing it around her shoulders, she inadvertently sighs as the warmth surrounds her. Jimin reaches and grabs both of her hands, wrapping his own around them as he nestles them against his chest.
"How long were you sitting there?" he asks, his face leaning against her arm.
She shrugs, though he can't see it as his eyes have closed again. "I was afraid to move away."
"You missed me," he smirks, his eyebrows raising as his eyes stay closed.
"I did," she says, knowing there's no reason to be shy about it. "I thought I'd lost you... and Yoongi."
Jimin's eyes open and he stares at her again. "I tried to find him, but I can't sense him anywhere. I don't know where he is."
"Taehyung said the same thing," she says in a quiet voice, her grip on his hands tightening. "We were going to look for you and him when you came in here."
"I appreciate the sentiment," he says, a small smile on his lips.
"What happened out there, Jimin?" she asks. She can't stand not knowing any longer.
Jimin sighs, his breath fanning over Reine's sleeve as he snuggles into her even more closely.
"Yoongi was tossed like a rag doll by that thing, and when I saw it look at you, I kind of lost it," he says. "I got it as far away from the camp as I could, shooting arrows at it and throwing whatever I could get my hands on at it. I fought it for a while, but I ran out of arrows and at that point, it had gotten over the shock of me attacking it so suddenly. It got the upper hand after that, and there wasn't much I could do to keep it from coming at me. I knew the second I tried to get away, it would go back to the camp so I kept letting it use me as a chew toy until I could tell it was getting bored of me. I tried to keep it occupied and more interested in me than anyone else, but it eventually ran off and I was too weak to follow it. I tried to sense where Yoongi went so I could go help him, but I couldn't feel him anywhere. I could feel Taehyung though, so I decided to find him because I knew he would be with you and I needed to know that at least you two were safe."
"You were incredibly brave, Jimin," she says, sniffling with unshed tears in her eyes as she looks at him. "You could have died, you know."
He shrugs. "I heard you begging Yoongi to help the rebels, and how terrified you looked knowing they were getting hurt, so I did what I could since he wasn't able to."
Reine lets her tears fall. "You need to stop almost getting killed to protect me. I would prefer you being alive."
"I can't die. So don't cry, please," he says, smiling at her. "I would prefer you being happy."
Reine manages a laugh, and he grins at her at the sound.
"How are you feeling?" she asks.
He sighs before letting her hands go and sitting with a loud groan.
"I'm getting there," he says. "I think the internal injuries are still healing, but I am healing. That counts for something."
"What are we going to do about Yoongi?" Reine asks, and Jimin slowly turns to look at her, a solemn look on his face.
"Did Taehyung explain why he can't feel Yoongi's presence?" he asks, his tone cautious.
Reine shrugs. "He doesn't know."
"Reine," he says quietly, his eye contact faltering as he leans against the wall of the cave, wincing slightly. "I have no answers either, but it can't be anything good."
She nods. "I guess I should be used to losing people I care about."
"We will find him," he promises, nodding slowly. "You have my word."
Jimin and Reine hear shuffling outside the cave, and they both look to see Taehyung walking in, his hood covered in the falling snow as he shakes it off and pulls it back to reveal his dark expression.
"Hey Taehyung," Jimin says, sending his brother a halfhearted smile as he waves.
"Jimin," Taehyung says, the smallest of smiles on his lips as he walks further into the cave.
"What happened out there? What did you find?" Reine asks, moving to stand. "Did you get hurt at all?"
Taehyung looks at Reine, frowning slightly before shaking his head. "I'm fine. I went back to the camp to see if I could find anything useful; I searched the woods for Jimin's stuff."
He holds Reine's bag. "This was in one of the tents. I'm guessing someone took it from Jimin's body and decided to keep it when we were brought in."
"These," he continues, holding his other hand up that has Jimin's bow, sheath of arrows and his mask in it, "were scattered around the woods. Took me a while to find them all."
Jimin smiles at his brother. "Thank you."
"Did you manage to shoot any into the wendigo?" Taehyung asks, gesturing to the arrows as he hands Reine her bag.
"Plenty of them," he says. "It kept pulling them out of its skin, though. It's much smarter than it looks. Much stronger, too."
"Taehyung," Reine speaks. "Did you find anyone alive out there?"
Taehyung shakes his head. "There were a few bodies at the camp, but I think most of them ran off while Jimin was fighting against the wendigo."
"Did you find any trace of Yoongi?" Jimin asks, the dried blood on his face creasing as he frowns.
"No," he says, walking to hand Jimin his things. "I searched for a while, but there was nothing."
"What now?" Reine asks, her voice hoarse with unshed tears as she thinks of where Yoongi could possibly be.
"I think we should track the wendigo and kill it, first of all," Taehyung says. "I think maybe the wendigo found Yoongi on its way back from fighting Jimin and maybe it took him back to its hiding place as a snack. I also have a feeling wherever it stays is where the last box is. I'm sure it was put here to guard the box, so it will want to live close to it."
"Let's go," Reine says, strapping the bag on her back underneath Jimin's cloak as she slips it off her shoulders to hand back to him. She picks her own cloak up and puts it on, pulling the hood over her head to stay as warm as possible. "You can sense the beast, right?"
"I think if we follow our last brother's presence, we can find it," Taehyung says. "But we can follow its tracks too to be certain that they're in the same place. Whatever the leviathan can do with cloaking itself, the wendigo is doing it too so I can't sense it."
"Jimin, are you okay to walk?" Reine asks, turning to him as she watches him stand and put his armor back on before his bow and arrows are put on his back. He clasps his mask on around his neck and he takes a deep breath before turning to them.
"I'm fine," he says, nodding his head. "This dried blood will come off in the snow. Put this on to stay warmer, Reine."
Jimin hands her his cloak, and she takes it without arguing because she knows he won't take no for an answer.
After putting it over her shoulders, Jimin and Reine turn to Sinclair, who is putting the fire out. "I filled your canteen on the way back. Drink some of it now so you're not dehydrated."
Reine nods, taking it out of her bag to take a few gulps of it. It's still cold, and she shivers as she places the cap back on the canteen and puts it back in her bag.
"I can carry your bag," Taehyung offers, holding his hand out for it but Reine shakes her head.
"I can carry it. Do not worry about me," she says, sending him a warm smile that he doesn't return, but his gaze lingers on her for a moment before turning to his brother.
"Let's go," he says. "No need to waste time."
Without another word, Taehyung leads Jimin and Reine out of the cave. He holds onto his obsidian dagger in his right hand while keeping his left arm near his torso to defend himself if need be.
"Once we get back to the camp, we'll follow the tracks made from the fight between the wendigo and Jimin," Taehyung explains as they move through the snow. Reine pulls the cloaks closer to her, her teeth chattering as she stares at Taehyung's back. "After that, we'll follow the trail the wendigo left behind to find wherever it is. If it seems to be headed in the same direction as where the last box is, we'll be able to knock out two birds with one stone."
"Won't the footprints be covered by now because of the snow?" Reine asks, continuously glancing at Jimin to make sure he is okay. He smiles back at her, giving her a thumbs up while holding his loaded bow in his hands.
"It left a pretty messy trail of blood on the trees," Taehyung explains. "Jimin did some damage, and it left a lot of evidence of its injuries behind."
Reine hums, nodding to herself as she glances at the pearly blanket of snow crunching beneath their feet.
"Do you think maybe we can't sense Yoongi because he's with the wendigo?" Reine asks, biting her lip. "You can't sense the wendigo either, so maybe it's cloaking Yoongi as well so he can't be found."
She sees Taehyung shrug. "I don't think so. Even when we were all with the leviathan, I could still sense Jimin and Yoongi above the water."
"We could sense Taehyung too," Jimin says, nodding.
"There has to be another explanation," Reine says, more to herself. "He can't just be gone."
"We'll find out soon enough," Taehyung says, trudging through the snow at a fast pace as Jimin and Reine struggle to keep up.
Reine sighs, her heart pounding in her chest as her mind fills with images of Yoongi - his scarred body and face, his fiery red hair and his signature smirk all cementing themselves into Reine's conscious thoughts.
While she has been given so much comfort knowing Jimin is alive and okay, she can't feel any kind of true peace until she knows that Yoongi is okay as well. She hasn't known these men long, but all three of them have become important to her in their own ways.
Each of them has saved her life, in more ways than one. She has grown so much with them, realizing so many things about who she is that she doubts she would have ever figured out if not for them.
She can't imagine continuing this journey with one of them missing.
Reine comes back to her senses when she sees the camp coming into view. There are still wisps of smoke from the previously burning fires, and her muscles tense as she realizes she is going to have to see the devastation left behind by the monster.
"You can close your eyes, if you want," Jimin says, nudging his shoulder with hers as he steps closer to her. "I can carry you."
She looks at him. "I'm not going to make you carry me when you've only healed. You're still healing, in fact, and you're too worried about your brother to insist that you need to rest."
Jimin grins, shaking his head as he turns away from her.
Taehyung glances over his shoulder. "I'm not healing. I can carry you again."
Reine shakes her head. "I am okay. I need to see this."
He shrugs, turning back to the front as the three make their way into the camp.
Reine holds her breath as she takes in the scene. The tents are reduced to tatters; anything that the wendigo didn't touch, the fires destroyed since the surviving rebels fled from the camp, leaving the fires blazing.
She can see a few bodies slowly being buried in the falling snow near the entrance of the camp, and she can also see splatters of blood in nearly every direction she looks in.
Not even the purity of the white snow can cover the truth of what happened here.
Reine tries not to look at the faces of the corpses; she tries to hold on to the hope that most of the rebels were able to escape.
When they reach the back of the camp, Reine sees what is left over from their own experience with the wendigo; Yoongi's blood is smeared in the snow, barely visible now as the ice falls from the sky at a steady pace. She sees the unrest in the otherwise flat ground of where Jimin tackled the wendigo, and from her place in front of the main tent, she can see how many trees the two knocked over in their scuffle.
"This way," Taehyung says, gesturing for Jimin and Reine to follow him as he walks into the woods. "See that?"
He points in the general direction in front of him, and Reine immediately sees what he is talking about; there is a trail of smeared blood marking the trees in the direction the wendigo and Jimin went during their fight. Trees snapped in half in the path make it easier to follow the blood trail as Reine stares at the sight with wide eyes.
Jimin stays silent, following behind his brother as Reine walks next to him. She reaches for his hand, her cold fingers grazing his skin as he holds onto his bow.
She can feel how tense he is.
"I'm fine," he says, smiling over at her as he turns back to the front.
She sighs, knowing him well enough by now to know that he isn't okay. She doesn't want to push him too far, however, so she lets her hand fall back to her side as they continue to follow the trail of smeared blood and broken trees.
"Feel that?" Taehyung asks Jimin, who holds his bow higher in front of him. Taehyung's grip on his dark blade tightens.
"The box and the wendigo have to be in the same place," Jimin nods. "The closer we get to the monster's hideout, the stronger I can feel our brother."
"Reine, when we go in, we want you to look for Yoongi. Don't worry about the box for now, and don't worry about the wendigo. We'll take care of it," Taehyung says, not glancing at her as the three approach a cave nestled in an alcove of trees in the heart of the woods.
"What do I do if he isn't there?" she says, her stomach dropping at the thought.
"Run out of here and hide until we come for you," Jimin says, turning to place his hand on her back. "We have a better chance against the wendigo with it being two against one, and if we know you are somewhere away from it and safe, we can focus on killing the bastard."
Reine nods, pulling her shoulders back. "I'll do my best to keep him safe if I find him. I want you two to stay safe too. I need all of you alive. Okay?"
Jimin smiles, leaning over to kiss Reine's cheek. "I won't leave you again. I promise."
"No talking once we go in," Taehyung says, twirling his dagger in his hand. "We need it to focus on us and if you go in there blabbing, it will want you and it will be harder for us to keep it distracted from you."
Reine nods.
"Let's go," Jimin says, running a hand through his hair before gripping his bow with both hands tightly as the three silently walk into the darkened cave as the sun sets.
