Chapter 45

if you haven't listened to the video above, please do, because it's honestly amazing

Taehyung

Something wasn't right. He didn't know what, but he knew that something was out of place.
Something wasn't right.

Having spent a few days now back at the factory, the orange haired bionic had used his time to explore the factory, to places he hadn't been to before: around the laboratory, between the courtyard's, the other accommodations etc. His assignments had always taken place outside the factory because they were more personal, and involved direct approaches with his clients, so he had never taken it upon himself to explore the place.
He hadn't once seen his hyung. Not once. And that had made Taehyung even more aware of the worry building up inside of him. This wasn't normal, even for bionics such as Namjoon who could spend days in the laboratory without rest. But the scientists were human, so they would end their work at night to rest and the bionics would always go back to their rooms too. And Namjoon hadn't.

For the past two nights, Taehyung had waited outside his room, and his hyung hadn't returned. Now that he thought about it, he hadn't seen any of the scientists who Namjoon tended to work with, including the pink haired scientist with broad shoulders. Kim Seokjin? He had to find him.
Knocking on the managers door, Taehyung was soon greeted by a voice from behind the door.

"Come in!"

"Excuse me..." He closed the door behind him, and saw Hoseok at his desk furiously typing away on his laptop. "Hoseok, sir?"

"Yyyyes..." The red haired man reluctantly pulled away from his laptop, and spared a glance at him.

Taehyung breathed in, and took a seat in front of the desk. "I know you told me that Namjoon hyung is fine, but I'd still like to see him before I go back to Busan."

"You can't."

Taehyung faultered. "...Why not?"

Hoseok continued typing, the gentle taps of his keyboard sounding across the room. "He's in the middle of a very important experiment at the moment."

"Not to be rude sir, but how do I know you're not lying just to send me away again?"

"I can assure you I am not lying. Taehyung."

The bionic swallowed, as the manager looked up at him with an eerie smile. A deceiving one. He was definitely hiding something. Maybe he should change his tactics. "Okay I believe you sir. Can I at least ask where Kim Seokjin is, the scientist?"

Hoseok blinked. Then he looked up at Taehyung with a slight frown on his face, still smiling. "Why do you need Jin?"

"I haven't had a checkup in a couple months, so I'm twice behind."

"But why him specifically?"

"He has my paperworks sir."

"Aish, stop calling me sir, hyung will do just fine." The older pinched the bridge of his nose, and let out an exasperated sigh. No one spoke for a while, and Taehyung could only watch as the manager held his head in his hands with his brow furrowed, probably due to stress and fatigue.

Then Hoseok grabbed his phone from his desk, and made a call. "Hyung, can you come here a minute? You need to do a checkup on someone...sorry for troubling you but the other scientists are busy...I know you're not doing anything now."

Taehyung looked up, and focused his attention on the call: "You know very well that I'm busy."

"Sheesh hyung, it'll be fine if you leave for ten minutes."

"But you don't know that!"

"I do, trust me hyung."

"Sure fine, whatever you say. If anything happens then I will blame you Hoseok."

Hoseok glanced at Taehyung, then looked back down at his desk. "I'll send him down to the main lab for his checkup."

"Sure."

He hung up, and gestured for Taehyung to make his way out. "Thank you hyung."

"Why are you thanking me?"

"I...uh-"

"Just leave it, you can go now."

Taehyung slipped out the room, and once the door closed behind him he released a breath he didn't know he had been holding. At least now, he was getting somewhere. Whatever 'experiment' was going on, it was big, if even the infamous Seokjin was constantly busy. So...maybe Namjoon was fine. Maybe he really was just busy too.
He made his way down to the main laboratory, and waited inside. A few minutes later, he heard footsteps and the door opening behind him. The pink haired man paced past him, and walked straight towards the filing cabinets at the end of the room with no regards to his presence.

"Ah, Jin hyung?"

"Wait there, let me get your files. What's your identification model?"

"5.0."

"Name?"

"Taehyung, Kim Taehyung. Um, hyung, can I ask-" The scientist started frantically searching the cabinet, and the bionic was slightly shocked at the sudden almost aggressive behavior coming from this scientist. Even from across the room, Taehyung could clearly see the devastating dark bags under his eyes, and his hollowy pale skin. A clear sign of lack of sleep. "Hyung, I need to ask something."

"Come here first, I need to scan your chip."

The bionic walked over to Jin, and the scientist grabbed a device and pushed it harshly against Taehyungs neck before it beeped. "That's strange, I don't have your files here."

"Well, you wouldn't hyung. You don't do my examinations."

Jin closed his eyes, rubbing his nose bridge with his thumb and forefinger. "Why did you ask for me then? I'm really busy right now, I don't have time for this."

"I need to ask you about my friend."

"Who?"

"Kim Namjoon."

Jin's eyes shot open, before they were quickly directed towards the bionic. "Why do you need to know about him?"

"He's my friend."

Jin took a step forwards. "Why should you care? You don't have friends."

"I-It's just out of curiosity."

The older scientist took another step towards the bionic, and another, and another after that. "You don't feel curious. You don't feel at all."

"H-hyung-"

Jin's bloodshot eyes widened, and stared at Taehyung with such ferocity it sent shivers down his spine. "You're changing."

"Uh-"

"I can't be dealing with this shit too. How is this happening?!"

"How is what happening?"

Taehyung could see the utter distress in the scientists face, the exhaustion, the irrationality. The fear. Jin shoved the files back in the cabinet, and started walking out the lab. "You'll have to get another scientist to do your checkup."

"Hyung wait! I didn't come here for a checkup."

"That was obvious enough."

Taehyung rushed to the entrance of the lab, and blocked off the doorway with his body. "I came here because I need to know that Namjoon hyung is okay. I need to see him with my own eyes."

"Who do you think-"

"And I'm not leaving until you tell me, because I know you and Hoseok hyung know."

"Move out the way. You have no idea how many laws you're breaking right now."

"I said I'm not leaving. Not until I get answers." Taehyung met Jin's fierce gaze, and he felt his insides set alight and burst as he gathered all his courage to stand up to against everything that he was, everything that he was told to be. And he breathed in, before he opened his mouth. "Where is he?"

The scientist glared violently at the bionic, and didn't move. His arms were crossed, and Taehyung started to see his eyes start to glisten in the dim laboratory lights. "I told you to move out the way. Now do it before I call for you to be taken away."

"I'm a bionic hyung, and you're human. I'll stop you before you can."

"Did you just threaten me?"

"Yes."

"You, a bionic? Threaten me?" Jin started laughing, and he clutched his sides as his harrowing laughter echoed around the empty laboratory. Taehyung let out a shaky breath, and he pressed his hands firmly against the door frame.

"What's so funny?"

"You just broke the number one rule for bionics. And yet you can't even seem to rationalise the epitomy of what you just did." Jin suddenly stopped laughing, and eerily looked up at Taehyung. "Are you even a bionic? How fascinating."

"I-I'm not moving until you tell me where he is. Namjoon hyung."

"Taehyung, if you let me by now, I won't report you for this. This is the only time I am offering to do so."

"I will, only if you answer me."

"That isn't for you to know."

"Is he alright?"

Jin went to open his mouth, and Taehyung could read the hesitation in his movements, and the slight glance to his left. "Of course."

"That was a lie."

Jin stepped forward, closing the inches between them. "Listen to me, and listen close, because I'll only say this once. I'm not telling you because it's for your own good."

Taehyung scoffed. "My own good?"

"Clearly, you've changed, and I'm not sure how but you have. If you don't leave now back to your green haired friend then you'll end up like your friend here at the factory."

"How did you kno-"

Jin's face darkened. "Leave now. Leave the factory, before someone else finds out about your condition."

"I..."

Taehyung felt his arms slip from his stance, and he could only look at the tiled floor as the scientists words sunk into his conscience. Jin stepped by him, ruffling the bionics orange hair on the way, and disappeared behind him. His steps started to fade, and Taehyung's inhumane rapid breathing sounded in his ears, along with the pattering of the rain against the glass windows.

What had happened to Namjoon?Taehyung looked up, and stood up straight, as Jin's steps became quieter and quieter. Then he straightened his posture, before turning on his heels and making his way down the corridor, after the pink haired scientist.
Wherever Jin was going, that was where his friend was. He would find him, and get to the bottom of this. This 'experiment'...

It involved everyone now. Him, Namjoon, Jungkook...even Yoongi hyung.

And he wouldn't stop until the safety of his friends was assured.
