Chapter 43
Yoongi
He stepped out his apartment, and took a breath in. The sky was layered in endless grey clouds that hung over the city as if to say "the sun ain't coming back anytime soon!"
And as the green haired man walked down the icy streets with his hands pocketed, he sighed and stared up skywards. What was he doing? He couldn't remember why he had come out that day. Maybe for shopping?
Or maybe going out for morning strolls had become a habit since cohabitating with the bionic. His thoughts last night had taken a twisted turn, and even now thinking back on them Yoongi shivered, and not because of the cold.
He had gotten better. In the past, if ever under attack by those malicious thoughts, Yoongi would have given in to them and maybe even thrived off of his miserable feelings. His life before university hadn't been bad, not at all. Yoongi's family had always been supportive of his decisions, and he had had good friends. But out of nowhere he had become bombarded with all these doubts, and before he knew it his confidence as well as his motivation to live his life had plummeted. Being alone during his college life hadn't exactly helped either, so for a long time Yoongi had remained quiet about his mentality, which only made everything worse. He had gotten used to losing against his mind, and had stopped fighting.
But for some reason, he didn't feel like losing today.
He was getting better, for sure.
Looking up from the pavement, he glanced around the street he had walked down. He didn't recognize this part of the area, and sighed to himself. Getting lost wasn't exactly what he had planned, then again, he didn't exactly have anywhere he planned on going. So he walked down another alleyway, and continued his walk in the cold.
He pulled out his phone, and checked his message log. So far, the bionic hadn't replied to his messages, and obviously not to any of his calls.
Chuckling to himself, Yoongi slipped the phone back into his pocket.
He felt like a needy boyfriend. He wasn't in reality, but for some reason that orange haired bionic really knew how to make him worry. Taehyung was probably busy, or his phone had died.
There were so many other things that could have happened, and Yoongi had even cried himself to sleep because of his irrational thoughts. How embarrassing.
"Yoongi?" He turned when someone called his name, and found a small girl with light brown hair staring curiously at him. Then her eyes widened, and she pointed at him. "It is you!"
"Jay?"
The girl grinned at him. "I'm glad you haven't forgotten me so easily!"
Yoongi smiled. "Obviously."
"Still cocky I see?"
"Obviously."
They both laughed, and Jay gestured around her. "Do you live around here?"
"I live close enough. How come you're back in Korea?"
"I'm visiting my grandparents for a couple weeks, I'm leaving for the USA in a few days though. How about you?"
"I'm still in uni."
"You found a hunk yet?"
"Aish you still have no shame."
She laughed, and they both started walking in the same direction. Jay had been an exchange student in the last year of highschool, and being a foreigner, Yoongi had found it easy to confide in his new friend. She had been the first person he had come out to, which made it easier to accept himself more as a person before telling his family.
She had chosen to go to a university in America, and after moving back they had lost touch with each other, like most highschool friends would.
"So I'm guessing you're working now?"
Jay nodded. "Yep, I've opened up a boutique in L.A. It's not too big right now, but it's something. And it'll grow, I know it."
"You're so confident."
"Geez, you're still such a pessimist Yoongi."
"I'm only kidding. I know you put a lot of work into it, so it'll definitely become popular in no time."
"That's gotta be the nicest thing you've said to me since you complimented my bangs 5 years ago."
"How do you even remember that?"
"Because it was the nicest thing you ever said to me."
She paused, as they crossed the street. "How come you're still in university?"
"I switched majors during my second year."
"I figured as much. I was surprised when you said you wanted to do law."
Yoongi shrugged. "It wasn't for me in the end."
"So what're you doing now?"
"Art."
"Hmm, that's also something which surprises me."
Yoongi frowned. "How come?"
"I dunno. You always liked to keep hobbies as hobbies."
"Yeah. I still don't really know what I'm doing."
"You'll be fine, you were always good at winging it."
"Adult life is different to winging a biology paper."
"It's not really. You seem to get the gist of it but unless you've had practice and experience you never really know what to do."
"So you're doing okay?"
Jay nodded. "I'm doing okay. When I first opened my boutique, I had no idea what I was doing. So I had a bachelors in fashion design and management. Being alone in the real world was still scary as fuck."
"Yeah I can see that."
"I mean, I had to make my own connections and do my own bills, and manage my own small business. It wasn't easy, and even though I'm used to it, it still isn't easy. I have a goal at the moment, which is to beat the ballet boutique down the street with the rude staff."
"Of course that's your goal."
"Yah it's only a small goal for now! But I have to ask myself what would the goal be after I beat their asses?"
"Find a new goal?"
"Precisely. So I also learned that when you're running your own business, you're also just blindly crossing different bridges at new opportunities that arise. You get me?"
"Yeah."
"I still don't really know what I'm doing, but I'm learning to cross the bridges when I get to them."
"...yeah. I get what you mean."
Jay stopped outside a small cafe, and clutched her purse to her side. "I'll have to catch up more with you later, maybe in a couple days before I leave? I've actually got a date."
Yoongi raised an eyebrow. "Wow, I feel so proud of you, the foreign girl who was so shy she could only speak to the one male in the class who turned out to be gay."
"Be quiet! You're right, you should definitely be proud of me since I really like this guy!"
"I am. But didn't you say you were leaving in a few days?"
Jay smiled, and tapped her temple. "I'll cross that bridge when I get there."
She stepped inside the cafe, and Yoongi watched through the window as a tall guy with dark hair stood up to greet her. He seemed to really like her, and Yoongi could see Jay blushing furiously even from where he was stood. He was happy for her, and smiling to himself, he shook his head and walked away.
He didn't know what he was doing. Then again, who ever did, really?
His chest rose and fell, and for the first time in a while, rose without a weight on it. Vibrating against his side, his phone whined, and Yoongi pulled it out his pocket.
Bastard bionic.
He quickly answered the call, and pressed it to his ear. "Yah Taehyung, you're actual lying scum."
A warm low, gentle laugh sounded down the phone, and Yoongi felt his heart race. "Hyung, that was so mean!"
"W-well, you said you would call and you didn't."
"I know, I'm really sorry. I had no service at the time, and I when I got to the factory I didn't want to wake you up." There it was. His mind had been playing him. And now, his anxiety was dropping. "But I wanted to call you hyung, I promise.
"Right..."
"I did."
"Yeah I heard you."
"Maybe even too much."
"What?"
"I-it's nothing. Did you do anything last night?"
Apart from cry myself to sleep? Nothing really. "Nothing really."
"Are you sure?"
"What do you mean am I sure."
"Well..."
"Well what? Just spit it out, stop being so mystical."
"Y-yeah, sorry I was just happy to hear your voice hyung."
"W-what the hell?!"
"It's nothing! Just ignore me!"
"Too late shitty bastard, what are you trying to say?" His heart was probably going to explode any moment.
"W-well, you may be able to tell when I'm lying, but I can do the same too. Did you go out last night?"
"No, I didn't."
"Watch TV?"
"No."
"Ah, did you work on your mixtape?"
"I was wait- no, I didn't really do anything interesting."
"Waiting?"
"No-"
"Did you really wait for me to call you?"
"I-I never... I never said that."
"You're not denying it either."
"I'll kill you."
Taehyung laughed again, and Yoongi shoved his face into his palm as he felt his cheeks turn red. "That's so cute hyung."
"D-do you want me to actually kill you?"
"Haha no hyung, I'm sorry if I kept you waiting. I really am."
"...right. You should've just called anyway. I was worried something had happened."
"Why would something happen?"
"You didn't really tell me why you were going back, so anything could have happened."
"I just needed to check up on something, that's all. On a friend."
"I see. Is your friend okay?"
"I...I don't know. I can't find him."
"Have you checked in with the person in charge?"
"Yeah, but he didn't tell me anything. He just said he was busy doing some kind of assignment with some scientists. I'm a bit worried."
"Yeah...I would be too. He's probably okay, if he's with scientists."
"Yeah, hopefully. I'll come back when I find out for definite he's okay. And I still have another thing to ask the manager..."
"What about?"
"About Jungkook. I want to know why he was in Busan. Why they placed him there."
"Placed? Jungkook said he reckons they threw him out because he had something wrong with him."
"Throw him out across Korea? Why would they go out their way to 'throw him out' on the other side of the country?"
"...you have a point."
"These people...they don't do things for no reason. They're the most technologically advanced company in the world. I just...need to know that in the long run, my friends are okay. And that they will be okay."
"I understand. I would do the same. It'll be fine Tae."
"I'm glad I could finally call you hyung."
"Me too."
"I really miss you."
"H-haha, you only saw me not too long ago?!"
Why was he freaking out?
"Yeah but we spent everyday together, so it feels weird being back at the factory again."
"R-right, yeah I get ya. I would miss me too." The bionic chuckled, and sucked in a breath over the phone. "...so I miss you too, okay?"
"Really?"
"Yeahhhh. Don't be so down, it doesn't suite you."
"That just made my day, so that won't happen."
Yoongi smiled. "Okay."
"Okay!"
"Keep me updated. And don't forget."
"Never."
Yoongi couldn't see the bionic, but through his voice, he knew he was smiling. It was apparent now that himself and Taehyung had become dependent on eachother. Maybe even too much.
So while the bionic was away, he'd fill his head was thoughts. Reassuring thoughts. Even if they were lies, he would look on the brighter side of things.
He was tired of being unhappy. Or feeling apathetic. He would be happy, even if he felt lost all the time. Because right now, while he stood in the middle of an unfamiliar street, he didn't feel unhappy whatsoever.
He felt...maybe even free.
