Chapter 36

really feeling the reminiscence

Jimin

Jungkook was gone for the day. He had started his part time job come Boxing day, so that had left Jimin alone in his apartment with yet another hangover.
He had lost the bet. Of course a bionic couldn't get drunk. Jungkook had even said before that his metabolism was crazy high, so he didn't even know why he had made a bet with the bionic in the first place. Sighing, he pushed away his laptop from his lap and turned the TV on. He had been making lesson plans for the past week after receiving an email from the headmaster who was in charge at the middle school he was joining in January. It was fun to an extent, but Jimin had also found how mentally exhausting sitting at a screen all day could be. And that was another reminder that he could never have a desk job.

The TV muttered quietly from the corner of the room as Jimin stared out of the window, "-at Yongdusan Park and Haeundae Beach where the sunrise festival will be held-"

The sunrise festival. He used to go annually with his family, and of course in the past few years Jimin hadn't been able to go. Of course he had friends to go with, but some part of him felt like he would be betraying his mom and brother if he went out and had fun knowing the situation.

He sighed again.
He was bored.

Without Jungkook around, Jimin's work ethic more or less decreased to bare minimum. He missed Jungkook.
God, was he really this needy? Maybe it was because he had accepted his feelings for the bionic. So now, his mind was constantly clouded with Jungkook's face.

"Aish I need to concentrate."

But he couldn't. The sun was shining through his windows, and was beckoning him to explore somewhere. Anywhere but here, alone. So he grabbed his coat and hat before leaving the apartment.

I'll visit home.

Jungkook

"Macchiato and blueberry muffin for table 7."

Swiping the plate from the side, Jungkook received a smile from the barista before he sped around the customers to the table in the corner. A middle aged man typing on his laptop looked up at his server. "Macchiato and a blueberry muffin," Jungkook said to the customer, repeating the order to him.

Jungkook smiled at the man, who nodded in response before picking up the glass. He was learning. Learning how to act around customers, and people. The barista who had greeted him earlier on, Seoyeon, had been in charge of him that morning for briefing the bionic on the basics, which included getting the orders right, cleaning the tables, and simply smiling at the customers warmly.
He had been told that since this was his first time working in a café setting, he would only be serving for the time being even despite the fact that he was bionotized.

"Hey Jungkook!" Seoyeon waved him over again when she noticed him stood with nothing to do. She smiled at him with a dimpled grin, and leant forward against the counter. "What are you doing for New Year?"

"I don't know, I'll have to ask Jimin."

"Jimin? Who's that?"

"My...friend."

She laughed, and lightly shoved his arm. "Why do you need his permission when he's just your friend?"

"We do everything together so I assume we'll be spending New Years together."

"Ahh I get it. You're a bionic right? Yeah that makes sense." She propped her elbow up and leant against her palm. "My grandmother had a bionic look after her a few years ago before she passed away. Your kind needs instructions right? You can't really make your own decisions?"

"I, um-"

"Can you like people? Could you get a girlfriend?"

"Uh-"

"Yah stop slacking!" Seoyeon winced when another barista scolded her from her left. He had small eyes and a wiry frame, but he seemed to be working at a faster pace than Jungkook could have calculated.
She sighed and turned back to the counter. The barista who had told her off came over to where Jungkook was stood and handed him a cloth. "Could you wipe table 2, the couple just left."

"Sure."

"Ignore Seoyeon if you want. I tend to with other simple minded people."

"Thanks for the advice..."

"Mike."

"Mike?"

Seoyeon raised her voice from the counter. "He grew up in America and moved back to Korea to make coffee."

"Ah, right."

Mike glared at Seoyeon, who yelped and walked into the back. "She's only 16 so of course she's still immature. But she's good at making coffee for her age. Anyway."

The barista nodded at him before turning back to a customer. Jungkook was still getting the gist of talking to strangers, and he knew that himself, but being exposed to this kind of social environment was a change.
It was why he had wanted to try this profession in the first place.
It was a change.
It was different.

The work hadn't been tiring, however Jungkook was somehow feeling strained. Maybe it was because he hadn't really slept due to the anticipation he had been feeling about the coming day, and even though he was a bionic, his body was still somewhat human and he needed rest from the previous karaoke night.
However, he also knew he felt strained because he was already missing Jimin.
It had only been a few hours since Jimin had dropped him off at the café, and yet he was already missing the small blonde man.

He started to smile to himself. He couldn't stop grinning like an idiot because...he liked someone.
He liked someone.
He still couldn't believe it. He liked Jimin.

"Jungkook, two mochas and an iced tea for table 3."

"Coming."

He was enjoying this. And picturing Jimin's smile in his head only fueled his own.

Jimin

He lifted the flower pot from the step and picked up the key below it. He always scolded his brother for leaving the spare key outside in such an obvious place, and now wasn't an exception.

When he stepped inside his house, a familiar smell hit him along with the wave of nostalgia that came along with it. It had been so long since he had come home. Everything was the same, including the family photos hanging on the walls, the aged in rugs and thick drapes, and the small silver chandelier that hung in the entryway.

"Jihyun?" He took his shoes off and made his way up the stairs, digging his toes into the soft carpet on every step. His brother was sat at his desk in his room with earphones on and furiously clicking his mouse to whatever game he was playing. Knocking on the door with his knuckle, Jimin called out again to his younger brother. "Yah Jihyun?"

"Hmm-oh Jimin hyung?"

He removed the earphones from his head and turned in his seat. "What's up?"

Jimin walked into the room with dark blue walls and plonked himself onto the bed in the corner. "Nothing, I had nothing to do today so I wanted to drop by. How was Christmas for you?"

"It was fine. We walked around the centre for a while trying to find a club that would let us in-"

"Hey!"

"It's fine hyung no one let us in, stop worrying."

"So what did you do for the rest of the night?"

"Just hung out."

Jimin raised an eyebrow at his brother. "Just hung out."

"Yeah."

"Doing what?"

"Well, one of my friends older brother bought some beer."

"Ahh, right."

Jihyun frowned and leant forwards in his chair. "I thought you'd be mad."

"Nah not really. You're responsible so I trust you wouldn't do anything stupid, let alone get caught."

"I didn't. I can't say the same for Minsoo."

"That reckless kid who accidentally set fire to the teacher's hair? Oh what did he do?"

Jihyun smirked. "He made a bet and said he would get laid, so he drunkenly flirted with every girl that passed him and he was slapped like 10 times."

"He could get done for harassment," Jimin laughed.

"No it'll be for reckless endangerment of his friends."

They both laughed, and Jimin leant back on the bed. "So what are you thinking of studying at uni?"

"Who knows?"

"What?" Jimin sat up again. "What do you mean you don't know?"

Jihyun shrugged and turned to his computer again. "Maybe some kind of engineering or science. I don't really know what I want to do."

"Shouldn't you have it written down in your application?"

"Well yeah I've written something down. But it's just work you know?"
When Jimin didn't reply, Jihyun carried on speaking. "You and me have been working nonstop for the past couple years, and it kinda got to the point where now I don't really know what profession I would even enjoy. I don't know, I'm just tired of working I guess."

"You want to live your life."

"...yeah."

They were both silent for a few moments, before Jimin spoke up. "You know, you can always apply next year. Take some time off."

"Eomma would be mad. You know how she's always been about education."

"Eomma's eomma. It's your life Jihyun. You should always make the choices that will in the end make you happiest."

He scoffed. "What about when you have to make sacrifices?"

"You make sacrifices that will make you happiest in the long run. It would be difficult for a while but in the end you see the benefits."

"Yeah well, working this much hasn't really made me happy."

"Really. So, you don't feel at all proud that we've managed to keep the house, pay for my tuition and medical bills for eomma by working?"

"Y-yeah but, it all came at a cost. I feel like I've missed out on so much."

"But Jihyun-" Jimin threw a pillow at his younger brother, "-there's always the possibility that, eomma wouldn't be here if we hadn't worked like we had." His brother remained silent, before standing up and walking to his bookcase. "I know we both had a lot on our plates, and eomma is really proud of you especially. It's just something you have to endure for the people you care about," the older spoke, almost nostalgically.

Jihyun turned around with a small paper bag in his hands. "I know hyung, I'm just a pessimist. Unlike you who always seems to look on the brighter side of things. Also, this is yours."

Jimin took the bag from his brother as Jihyun took a seat besides him. "What's this?"

"A late Christmas present."

"I thought we agreed that we wouldn't spend money on each other and only on eomma?"

Jihyun shrugged. "I saw it last night and thought you would like it."

"What is it?"

"Open it and see hyung."

Digging into the brown paper bag, Jimin pulled out a little black box.
And upon opening it, he found two silver rings.

"What are they?" He asked, pulling one out and inspecting the jewelry.

"Couple rings."

"Huh?"

Jimin felt his face heat up, and he placed the rings on his lap. "Why did you buy me this?"

"You and Jungkook are obviously dating if he's living with you, so I got you both something as a house warming gift-."

"W-we're not!"

Jihyun sighed. "Hyung you don't have to lie to me."

"But we're seriously not..."

"But you will?"

"I-I don't know..." Jimin's heart was pounding. He couldn't really believe that his little brother was the one to bring up this topic. "So...so you know then?"

"Hm? Know what?"

"That...that I'm gay..."

"Mhm."

Jimin shyly rubbed the back of his neck. "Is it that obvious?"

"It was for me since I've lived with you almost all my life."

"Y-yeah but, how long have you known?"

"Mmm, maybe since when I started middle school?"

"That long?!" Jimin shoved his brother in the arm. "That was like six years ago!"

"I know."

"How, when did you find out?"

"You just always seemed so close with your friends, and never really was very masculine. You always got embarrassed whenever I brought friends over, and you've never had a girlfriend."

"Aha, yeah..."

"And when you dyed your hair blonde and got piercings I was pretty sure but then I was never 100% sure until now."

"R-right...I suppose I thought I'd be more affected by people finding out but, I'm not as much as I thought."

"Were you ever going to tell me and eomma?"

Jimin sucked in a breath, and rubbed the metal band around the rings with his forefinger. "I don't know. Of course I would have but it's not something I could just bring up."

Jihyun grinned at his brother. "Well now you have an excuse. You can introduce eomma to your new boyfriend."

"You know I'm actually gonna kill you!"
