Chapter 34

Namjoon
"So...can you please repeat yourself hyung?"
Jin released an exasperated sigh, and held his head in his hands. "You're super intelligent, why do you need me to say it all again?"
Namjoon remained composed, and placed his hands in his pockets. "I just want to record what you said in my mind." That was a lie. They both knew of his photographic memory, and yet both knew they needed the reasurance of a second explanation.
The scientist breathed in, and turned away. "Starting where?"
"Starting from the beginning."
"Is this really necessary Namjoonie? I know you know."
"It is. Please."
"O-okay." He pushed his pink bangs from his forehead, and opened his mouth to speak. "Bionics haven't been around for long, and so a group of managers in charge of bionic factories across Asia grouped together to discuss improvements that could be made. And someone suggested to test their EQ, their emotional intelligence."
"Which was Hoseok."
Jin nodded. "It had never been brought up before because no one thought it was important." He paused, before starting again. "A bionic generation was randomly selected, which happened to be Jungkook's version: 5.2. People like myself started to synthesize a drug that would immediately make the chosen bionics susceptible to their emotional intelligence which they didn't know they had."
Namjoon remained silent, and only watched the scientist explain, who had worry plastered to his face.
"So, we drugged the bionics and placed them in different areas across the country to observe how they behaved in different social settings and environments. Jungkook was placed in Busan. And we have been watching him for the past couple of months."
"We?"
"Other bionics have been assigned to monitor their comportment which we expected would either be chaotic or successful."
"And Jungkook's transition was successful?"
"Yes, although if he had remained on the streets he wouldn't have been so lucky. The bionics that couldn't handle the sudden emotional strain have either killed themselves, turned to destruction of property or arson. But none have harmed a human, yet."
The bionic nodded, taking key mental notes of the conversation. "So where do I come in?"
"R-right. You already heard what I had to say to Hoseok; you inhaled the highly concentrated fumes of the drug, so you will-" he swallowed, and Namjoon slowly walked up the the scientist, "-you will experience symptoms so much worse than the bionics who went crazy did."
"I'll go insane."
Jin nodded.
"I'll...be unrecognisable...?"
"I don't know if you will be able to return from such a predicted state of mind." Jin turned to the bionic as Namjoon leaned against the workbench adjacent to the scientist. "We'll have to lock you up somewhere. Hoseok has already ordered the creation of a room stable enough to hold a bionic at full strength. It's just a matter of time before the symptoms flare up..." Namjoon placed his hand on top of Jin's as he started to trail off. Jin looked at the bionic with pained eyes, and squeezed his hand. "I'm worried about you, Namjoonie."
"Me too. Which is, amazing actually."
"H-hey you shouldn't say that. Nothing about this is good, in any way."
"There is something."
"Don't be ridiculou-" The bionic pulled the pink haired man into his arms, wrapping his arms across his wide shoulders. "J-Joonie?"
"Right now. Right now I know I'm feeling something, and in the next few hours, I'll be able to name what it is I'm feeling, but right now I'm unsure. I don't know what it is, but hyung, I know that I've wanted to do this for such a long time."
"To be like this?" Jin hesitantly placed his arms around the bionics neck, and moved closer.
"Yes. Just like this."
"Me too."
The two remained like that, with their arms around each other: just stood in the middle of the laboratory with their faces buried in each others shoulder. Neither wanted to move.
And it wasn't something either had to do, so for a while they remained unmoving, and in a sense, hopeful yet hopeless.

Jungkook
"Jiminie hyung, is it okay for you to get drunk again?"
The four of them stepped into a karaoke bar and were currently paying for a room. Jimin scowled at his question, and pouted with his arms folded. "That was one time, I can handle myself."
Taemin laughed besides him, and handed the worker his card. "That is 100% a lie. We went to university with you Minnie, we know."
"Y-yah come on hyung-"
"You got that right." Yoongi smirked at the blonde, and him and Taemin shared a look of mischief.
"Hey you can't gang up on me!" He turned to Jungkook with wide eyes, and the bionic smiled at his cute expression.
"Jiminie hyung, I think you can handle your alcohol, I just think-"
"Think what?"
"That you don't really know your limits."
Jimin's jaw dropped, and his friends laughed before walking down the corridor to their room. "That's so mean!"
Jungkook grabbed his hand, and pulled the smaller after Yoongi and Taemin. "Prove me wrong."
"What?"
He turned around and gave Jimin his bunny smile. "If you can prove me wrong hyung then I will admit that."
Jimin raised his chin in defiance as Jungkook opened the door to the room. "Sure, I'll prove you wrong. You haven't had alcohol before so I'm already ahead of you."
"Hyung, I may be a bionic but I'm still not allowed to drink."
Taemin spoke up from the couch. "Aw come on, it'll just be for tonight since it's Christmas."
"I can't get drunk, my metabolism is too high."
Jimin grinned. "Hmph, we'll see."
***
A couple hours had passed since the first song had been sung. Jimin and Taemin had sung a duet, Yoongi had rapped a few songs. They had ordered food and drinks, and while Jimin so far was living up to his side of the bet, Jungkook could easily see how the alcohol had flushed his cheeks. And his eyelids were starting to become heavy.
Looking down at his own drink, he placed the glass down onto the coffee table and leant his back against the couch. All three were stood jumping around and yelling into their microphones, hair flying and voices breaking. Jungkook had a huge grin on his face. This was fun. Spending time with the friends he had made outside the factory on a special occasion was...something he knew he would cherish. He closed his eyes as he embraced the music blaring from the speakers, the smell of the alcohol, the sound of uneven yelling, and the saltiness of the fries and chicken wings.
"Yah Jungkook!" Taemin had yelled his name through the mic, and was pointing at the bionic. "Get up here!"
"What-"
"Don't be the only one not singing." Yoongi rapped that last part, which sent Jimin into fits of laughter.
His blonde hyung smiled at the bionic, and held out a hand toward him. "Come up here and sing with us Kookie?"
"I..." He raised his voice over the music. "I don't know if I can!"
"It doesn't matter! Karaoke isn't about sounding good, it's about sounding terrible together!"
His hand wasn't pulling away.
"Okay."
Standing to meet his hyungs, they forcefully handed him a microphone and pushed him toward the screen. Jimin punched in some numbers, and grinned when the song he had sung at the hospital rang out into the room.
Jungkook's ears immediately pricked up, and remembered back to when Jimin had angelically sung the melody.
He opened his mouth.
"We don't talk anymore..."
And he started singing. It didn't sound like how Jimin had sung it, but by his friends surprised reactions followed by loud cheering, he was sure he sounded fine. Jimin was grinning at him with his crescent eye-smiles, and Jungkook smiled back through the lyrics as they locked eyes and as he moved through the verse.
"-Ooo it's such a shame.
We don't talk anymore.
We don't talk anymore.
We don't talk anymore like we used to do.
We don't love anymore.
What was all of it for, ohh, we don't talk anymore, like we used to do-"
Before he could start the second verse, he was interrupted by a sultry, higher pitched voice, who finished the lyrics before Jungkook could.
"I just hope you're lying next to somebody, who knows how to love ya like me."
Jimin held the microphone to his mouth, and held it above his lips to protude his voice.
"There must be a good reason that you're gone~"
The blonde man smirked at Jungkook, who stood gazing at the singing individual before him. "...wow..." He mumbled this under his breath as Jimin sang the chorus, and as Taemin and Yoongi also watched the scene before them. Both continued to take in turns singing their parts, and when the song ended with their eyes meeting once again, the bionic heard someone whistle behind them.
(P.s I'm sure you've all heard this already but I never get tired of listening to them :P)
"Well damn."
He felt someone punch his arm, and found his green haired friend stood with his arms folded beside him. "If you can sing then why didn't you earlier on?"
"I...that was the first time..."
"Dang, if that's the case I'm sure all bionics can sing."
Jimin walked over to where they were walking. "I doubt it hyung. Not everyone has the vocal chords for it."
"Hm fair point. You must've been a singer before you became a bionic."
Jungkook looked down. "Yeah...maybe."
They were silent for a moment. Taemin sat down on the couch and started looking through the menu. "Well, either way you two are hot together."
"H-hyung!" Jimin whined.
"What? I didn't mean as a couple I meant as a duo!"
"Yeah, you two sound great together."
The bionic looked from Taemin to Yoongi to Jimin. The blonde had rosy cheeks, and was looking at Jungkook waiting for his reply. "I think we do too."
Jimin's smile reached his eyes again, and gestured to the bionic to sit at the table. When they were all seated, Jimin suddenly spoke out. "Hey Yoongi hyung, what time's your friend getting here?"
"Uh I don't know, he should message me when he gets here. But I reckon pretty soon." He paused before looking at Jimin. "Yah Jimin, I need the toilet."
"What? You can go on your own hyu- oh. Yeah me too."
They both stood up and quickly made their ways out the room. Before Yoongi closed the door behind him, he shouted behind him, "Hey Jungkook, if my phone goes off then go meet my friend at the entrance."
"Y-yeah, sure."
When they left, Taemin raised his eyebrows at the bionic. "So. What's happened between you and Minnie?"
"What do you mean?"
His hyung folded his leg over the other and squinted at him. "Don't act dumb, you two have gotten pretty close since the last time I visited."
"How do you-"
"It's so obvious Jungkook. The way you two look at each other, it's like you were having eye sex the entire time you were both singing."
"I...what?" Jungkook felt the heat rise to his cheeks.
"You like him don't you?"
"...like?"
"As in, romantically."
Before he could reply, a phone on the table vibrated against the wooden top. The message read outside now, which room? The bionic stood from his seat and bowed slightly to his hyung. "I should-"
Taemin clicked his tongue and shook his head. "I'll hold the fort down. I will get this out of you Jungkook."
"R-right, okay hyung."
He left the room and made his way down the corridor, and he started to smile to himself again. And when he tried to stop, his smile would only return. As cliché as it sounded, it made sense. He liked Jimin. The sensations in his stomach, the kiss, how whenever he looked at the blonde he would feel nothing else but immense happiness. He liked Jimin. He was a bionic, and he felt romantically about another person. He liked Jimin. So this was what these feelings were...
When he saw a shadow of a figure standing outside, he bowed towards the worker before exiting with his grin still stuck to his face like glue.
But when he saw a mop of orange hair atop the slim individual, he stopped in his tracks, and his smile immediately peeled away.
"T-Taehyung?"
"Jungkook...?"
