Chapter 30

Hoseok

Sighing, he shoved the paperwork to the side. So much paperwork and effort just to make one person a bionic. But it was his job as the person in charge to make the call on whether that person is fit enough to become a bionic. He also has to make sure that when they come to the factory, they come in a small package. If that person for example is alive with family or friends, or they still have a chance at life then he has to refuse.
If they change someone into a bionic even despite the facts then they could easily be sued.

The day so far had been a drag. Being the manager and having so much responsibility at such a young age was really draining his enthusiasm. He even used to go by the name 'J-Hope' but after taking over this factory he since dropped it and became a more official figure. He missed being that person: that smiley, loud friend who could cheer up anyone if he tried.

The telephone rang besides him, and he sighed again before he picked it up. "This is Hoseo-"

"You need to come to the lab pronto, it's an emergency."

"Jin-hyung? What's happened?"

"Just get here quickly, now."

The call ended, and Hoseok jumped up from his desk and ran out his office. He couldn't help but feel a bit excited as well as worried. He became a part of this whole bionic life because he wanted to do something different. Be something different. So creating artificial life who could help people just sounded so perfect.
And spending his time behind a desk really didn't.

When he arrived at the lab, he burst through the doors and walked up to the the pink haired scientist who was stood at the door of the storage room. "Hyung-"

"Get in quickly."

He complied, and when he stepped into the room, Jin locked the door behind them. Hoseok sighed, as he folded his arms against his chest. "What's happened?"

"This." Jin pointed at the figure stood in the corner. It was the same tall bionic he always saw in the lab with the sandy brown hair and dimples. Only he didn't look...good.

"What's wrong with him?"

"He's becoming unstable."

"What? Unstable?"

"Unstable...ill, out of sorts, plagued...whatever you'd call it!" the older replied hastily.

Hoseok froze. "How? Why?"

Jin took a breath in, and Hoseok took notice of the unsteadiness of his chest, and his clenched fists stuck by his sides. "He came in the day I finished synthesising the drug, only when he came in he inhaled the fumes."

"W-which is bad because?"

"When converting the drug to a pill we have to dilute it because it's too concentrated in it's primary form. And Namjoonie, he...he was intoxicated with the drug before we diluted it."

Hoseok swallowed. "So, when you said he's unstable, is he going to become like...the other 5.2's?"

The scientist looked at the bionic, who's face was pale with a worried expression. "No, he won't."

"O-oh?"

"It'll be about five times worse."

Hoseok's ears pricked up when the bionic suddenly spoke out of nowhere, his words ragged and heavy. "What...what do you mean? I still don't know what's going on..."

Jin faced Hoseok again with a firm expression. "What should we do? I can't legally make decisions without advising with you first."

"We wait it out."

"We...what?! Are you insane?!" Jin stepped toward him with wide eyes.

"Yes, this hasn't happened before. There's no way we can let this opportunity escape us."

"Do you realize WHAT YOU'RE SAYING?!" Jin grabbed his shoulders, and Hoseok felt his desperation in his strong grip.

"Yes, hyung."

"Oh god..."

Jin stepped away, and he shakily let out a breath. Then he looked at the bionic again, with fear in his eyes. Namjoon held his gaze, and the room went silent as each person allowed the decision to sink in.

Hoseok squinted at the pair. So it's like that. Clearing his throat, Hoseok broke the quietness and spoke. "Jin, you know what has to be done."

"...yes."

And with that, he left the room and the two, and headed back to the office. When he closed the door behind him, he squeezed his eyes shut, and he sank to the floor, envisioning himself screaming as loud as his lungs would allow him.
Why was he like this?
Why did he allow such things to happen?
When did he become...this person he was now? He couldn't even raise his voice like he wanted to. When was the last time he let go as freely as he wanted?

His heart thudded loudly, and an inescapable heat surged through his stomach as he clutched his torso with his arms. This isn't what he signed up to do.He didn't want to be this person. He didn't want to be the bad guy.
His mind went back to his most recent experiment. And the young-faced bionic who had sat across from him only a few weeks ago. They used to be people. He used to be a person.

How did it come to this? He knew the outcomes of every experiment he came up with, so why did he ever propose them?
He used to be a person.
He's still human, but since this promotion, he hasn't ever acted like one.
It was so ironic.

He missed his old self. Him and Jin used to be so close all the way through highschool, and he never forgot his ambitions and feelings from back then. The feelings, the want to help people, it never left his mind. But now he finds himself forgetting how it had ever felt.

The phone rang again, and Hoseok looked up from where he was crouched.

He stood up, smoothed down his shirt, and took a seat in front of his desk. What was he? What did he even used to be? Does it matter? The phone continued to ring, and before picking it up he took a deep breath, and closed his eyes. What was he? What did he even used to be? Does it even matter...?
This is who he was now.

"...this is Hoseok."

***
Jin

When Hoseok left the room, Jin had felt the world around him start to crumble. Why did this have to happen? His eyes never left the bionic in front of him. Namjoons skin was so pale, and he could see the heavy rise and fall of his chest. When he looked at him with those desperate eyes, Jin choked up because it was such a beautiful sight. "Namjoonie...where do I start."

The bionic walked over slowly, and wiped away the sweat which had formed on his forehead. "Hyung?"

"R-right, so...yeah um, so basically w-we did this, this thing...where...-what...?" something splashed on the floor beneath him, and when he looked closer he realised it was water. Then he felt something run down his face. "W-why am I crying, what the hell?" He wiped his eyes with his sleeve, and when he pulled it away, more tears only took the place of the last ones. "W-why...?"

"Hyung." Namjoon stepped closer, and gently placed his slender fingers against his cheeks.

"N-Namjoonie?"

The bionic wiped away his tears with his thumbs, and pulled him into an embrace. Jin gulped, and hesitantly placed his hands on the bionics back.
Why was this happening? "Hyung, don't cry."

The tears became more heavy, and Jin silently sobbed into Namjoon's shoulder. When had he come to care so much for this being? Over the years of knowing each other? After spending so much time together, and watching him work besides him? Or from the first moment Namjoon had woken up from that distant container?

"I don't know what'll happen, but don't cry, we'll get through this."

Jin tightened his arms around the bionic, and he felt Namjoon do the same. We won't. You won't. Because I know what'll happen, and you don't. "...Namjoonie..."

He pulled away, and looked down at his feet.

"I'm going to tell you about this...experiment."
