Chapter 4: Staying Up
You struggled to see through the forms of others, since you were after all only a child. You pushed yourself through the crowd, your mom struggling to keep up with you. You finally came to the front, an eager smile on your face, but that faded quickly once you saw the weak forms of the soldiers.
There wasn't one person that didn't have a bandage somewhere on their body. Some were badly injured, bleeding severely, some even missing body parts. Your eyes scanned the small amount of people that had actually came back alive, before you felt someone grab your hand. You looked up to your side, seeing your mom with a worried look.
"Excuse me," she stopped one of the soldiers. "Did (father's name) make it back?" You felt her grip on your hand tighten as her voice cracked a little. The man she had stopped looked down sadly, biting his lip as he searched for the right words to use.
"Did he?" Your mom asked, her voice cracking again as tears threatened to escape. The man looked up sadly, shaking his head slowly as your mom instantly sobbed loudly, gripping your hand even tighter as her other hand went over her mouth to cover her sobs.
"I'm sorry..." The man apologized sadly before continuing walking with the rest of the injured soldiers. You, only being a child, were confused, and looked up at your mom.
"Where's daddy?" You asked, as your mom sniffed and picked you up. Her eyes were red, and tears continued to stream down her cheeks.
"Daddy won't be coming back," your mom replied, her voice cracking again as her lips quivered.
You furrowed your eyebrows in confusion. "Why not?"
"'Cause he's up there," your mom said and pointed to the sky, your eyes instantly looking upwards before looking back at your mom, who smiled weakly. "Watching over you."
Everything got blurry again, as you heard your name being repeated, before shooting up from your bed, breathing heavily as you tried to catch your breath. You felt something wet on your cheeks, before realizing you had been crying in your sleep again. You quickly wiped your tears away, before looking back up, seeing Krista and Kadence looking at you worriedly.
"Are you ok?" Krista asked worriedly.
"Y-yeah," you forced yourself to speak, your heart still beating quite fast. "Just a nightmare." You forced a weak smile, as Krista furrowed her eyebrows in worry. You knew you couldn't fool Kadence, but you didn't want Krista to know about your nightmares or your past, at least not yet.
"Are you sure?" She asked, as you nodded.
"It's ok," Kadence assured Krista. "I'll stay up with her." Krista looked over at Kadence before looking back over at you, her eyebrows still furrowed in worry, but decided to shrug it off and go back to bed. Kadence looked over at you once Krista was gone.
"Wanna talk about it?" She asked warmly, sitting beside you on your bed.
"There's nothing to talk about," you assured. "It was just another nightmare."
"What was that one about?" You didn't like talking about your nightmares, as most of them were about your past, but you trusted Kadence. You had been living with her since you were young anyway, and she knew about your past and nightmares from before.
"This one was about my dad," you said truthfully, forcing yourself not to let any tears out, even though it was hard. Kadence gave you a reassuring smile in response, knowing you didn't want to talk about it anymore.
"I have an idea," she started, standing up from her sitting position on your bed and looking down at you. "Follow me." You stood up from the bed, as Kadence put on a jacket and her boots, you doing the same before she led you out of the dorm and outside.
It was dark out, meaning it was still very early. All the lights from inside were off, which made it seem even darker outside. You were confused at first, but realized where Kadence was taking you once you saw a familiar tree.
She sat down under it, patting the spot next to her for you to come over, as you sat down next to her.
"I'd understand if you don't want to go back to sleep," Kadence explained as she looked over at you. You looked back at her and nodded, before turning your attention to the starry sky, as Kadence did the same.
--
The sun was finally out and the lights from inside were on, meaning people had started waking up. You and Kadence had stayed by your signature tree all night, talking about random things to get your mind off of your nightmares. Kadence had even fallen asleep at some point, but woke back up after an hour or so.
Kadence groaned as she stood up, dusting herself off before turning towards you.
"We should get dressed," she said. "Coming?" You nodded in response, standing up and dusting yourself off as well before following Kadence to the girls' dorm, where both of you got ready before leaving to the mess hall.
Some people were up, but not too many. It was still early after all. You both grabbed your trays and sat down at a random table, eating your breakfast in the peaceful silence.
After eating most of your meal and laughing with Kadence, a small group of people you recognized came in, grabbing their trays. That small group was Krista, Armin and Eren, and you figured the rest of the 104th didn't like waking up early, and preferred sleeping in.
After grabbing their trays, they looked for a spot to sit. Once you and Kadence came into Krista's view, she instantly made her way towards your table, her concern for you from before still there. Eren and Armin instantly followed, the trio sitting across from you and your friend.
You wouldn't have noticed they were there if you hadn't heard the sound of trays meeting the table, causing you to look up from your meal.
"How are you feeling?" Krista asked, concern obvious in her voice.
"Did we miss something?" Armin asked, looking over at Krista confusedly before looking over at you. You instantly bit your lip and looked back down at your meal, not really wanting to explain your entire life, which you would have to do if you told them what your nightmares were about.
"She woke up in the middle of the night from a nightmare, but she's better now," Kadence explained, and Krista took the hint that you didn't want to talk about it. Eren and Armin were both wondering what the nightmare about, but shrugged it off once they figured you didn't want to talk about it.
You all continued with your breakfast, the others talking about random stuff while you listened as other trainees started appearing in the mess hall.
--
You zipped through the forest with your swords in your hands. You flew down, slicing the nape of yet another "titan", before flying farther up. You tried your best not to yawn, but failed miserably.
You were tired from getting barely any sleep last night, plus the little sleep you got before then. And on top of all that, you had been training a lot for almost three days, so saying you were tired was an understatement.
You were getting dangerously sleepy, and you even dosed off a few times, but you tried your best to stay awake. You decided to take a break on one of branches, making sure you slowed down a little before actually landing on the branch, to make sure you wouldn't fall off again.
Right as you were about to land, you had accidentally dosed off, causing your foot to trip on the branch, and before you knew it, you were falling through smaller branches until you hit the ground with a thump.
Luckily the branch wasn't as far up as the first time you fell, but that didn't stop you from getting hurt.
You had small cuts on your arms and legs, even a few on your cheeks from the branches hitting you as you fell. The fall had knocked the breath out of you, knocking you out since you barely had any energy, anyway.
The fact that there was animals in the forest definitely wasn't a good thing.
