I woke up in my childhood bed
Wishin' I was someone else

July 17th, 2019

Indigo was sat in the corner of her bed staring out at the Clairo poster across from her. Today was her father's funeral, the day she had been dreading for two weeks.

Her legs were pulled to her chest as she had her arms wrapped around the hedgehog squishmallow Kate had gotten her a few years prior. She wished the blonde was right beside her, but she wouldn't even answer her texts.

The white door of her room then creaked open, revealing her mother standing there in a floor length black dress, with her hair pulled up, and tear stains left on her cheeks. "You ready?" her voice was soft as she kept herself in the doorway.

Indigo managed to pull herself off of her bed and walk over to her closet, throwing on a purse, and then walking into the hallway with her mom.

As they entered the living room Indigo was met with her thirteen year old sister, Seazynn, sitting on the couch with her head buried in her phone. "Seaz" Indigo's voice almost broke as she tried getting her sister's attention. The girl immediately looked up and got off the couch and headed over to the two older women.

They all then headed outside into the summer heat before getting into their mom's car. The ride to St. Boniface Catholic Church was silent besides the slight hum of the air conditioner in the car.

Indigo's head was rested against the window as she watched the buildings they passed. She softly closed her eyes trying to push her tears back as her hand reached up for the necklace her dad gave her only for her to remember the had lost it at Kate's early in the year.

As the Aro girls entered the church they felt all eyes on them. Many people coming up from all directions to console them and give them hugs. Many of the people that came up to Indigo she had no idea who they were.

The only people she recognized was the Martin family. All had showed in attendance expect for the one she wanted to see the most.

"Hey, do you know if Kate's coming? I texted her, but she didn't respond" Indigo asked walking over to Kennedy, Kate's sister. Indigo's hands were shaking from the anxiety of the day and just everything that was happening around her.

"She didn't tell you?" Kennedy asked with a confused face as she took the younger girls hands in hers. Indigo just shook her head no, "She already left for Iowa."

"Oh" Indigo's heart dropped to her stomach. She had no idea if she had done something wrong to make Kate not want to say goodbye to her before heading off to college.

"I'm sorry" the blonde frowned before bringing the girl into a hug. Kennedy squeezed the girl extra tight before letting go. Indigo then gave her a sad smiled before feeling her mom's hand rest on her shoulder.

"They're about to close the casket if you want to say bye. You don't have to" Indigo's mom whispered in her ear. The brunette nodded before she walked down the aisle.

It was safe to say that when she imagined herself walking down the aisle one day it would be with her father in hand, and not to go see him lying down at the end of it.

When she reached the casket she laid her hands on the outside before bowing her head down.

I know I wasn't always the perfect daughter, but I really tried to be. You were the perfect Dad for me and I will miss you every day. Especially the moments when you held me as I cried in your arms, over something as stupid as stubbing my toe. Or the moments when we danced in the living room to Taylor Swift. I love you Papá. I know God already has a place set up for you.

She then walked away allowing her sister to say something to their dad.

She was sat in the front row along with her mom and sister. All their hands intertwined together as they participated in the mass. Indigo read the first and the second readings, while Seazynn did the Prayer of the Faithful.

"Thanks be to God" everyone said to conclude the mass. The priest then left, followed by his alter boys, before all of the Aro family and David's friends joined in on carrying the casket out to the car.

Everyone was then quickly escorted to the grave sight. Everyone stood around as it was lowered into the ground. Indigo had put on dark sunglasses so that no one could see the copious amount of tears falling from her doe eyes.

All the guests held frangipani flowers as they watched. Mrs. Aro was the first to go up and drop hers in before blowing a kiss down. Indigo and Seazynn went together to drop the flowers and then everyone else followed.

The workers then placed the dirt back on top of the casket. Indigo and Seazynn both had their heads turned into their mom's arms as they cried, not wanting any of this to be real.

Both of her hands found her daughter's hair as she soothed the back of their heads and gave them both kisses on their foreheads.

Once everything was over all the girls piled back into the silent car and drove to their home. There was small sniffles heard every now and again, but no one said a word.

And as soon as they were home they all sat down together and ate dinner. Conversations only last for a few minutes before dying out. No one really wanted to talk. They all wanted to be alone.

This was when Indigo realized that she hadn't only lost her father, but her best friend too.
