XI. dinner
( real life )
|| INDIGO'S POV ||
My original plan of burying my feelings wasn't going very well as I could barley even look Kate in the eye, which made things very awkward as I'm sitting across from her at dinner.
I'm barely even eating the queso she bought for us because she knows how much I love it. I'm just breaking the chips into smaller parts and dipping them every now and again, as Kate watches a sports game on one of the tv's.
I was brought out of my thoughts when our server came back over to us, her dark brown hair was pulled back into a slicked back ponytail and she has small thin gold hoops on her ears, "What can I get for y'all" she smiles, but her eyes are clearly staring at Kate as the girl looks through the menu and finds the item she wants to order, but is too scared to say it wrong, "One Tacos De Carne Azada, got it, and for you?" she laughs at Kate before turning her attention towards me still holding a smile on her face.
"Pollo Con Chorizo, please" I smile before taking the menu from Kate and handing it to the girl once she's done writing.
"Great! I'll get those put in right away, just tell me if y'all need anything!" she says smiling, mostly directing it towards Kate before she walks off.
"She's kinda cute" Kate giggles as she takes a sip of her drink, I just nod my head feeling like my heart just got a little pin needle poked at it. "What's up? You've been so quiet" the blondes voice is as serious as a heart attack when she asks me that.
I stay silent for a couple of beats until I respond, "Nothing, just tired" I shrug before playing with my straw in my Shirley temple.
"In, I know that's not what's bothering you. Talk to me"
But how am I supposed to talk to her about the one thing no friend should talk to their best friend about. I mean maybe it's not even a crush? Maybe I just like the fact that I'm getting attention from her, even in a friendly manner.
"Seriously, I'm just tired" I say, but it sounds a little more harsh than I meant for it to.
"Ok" was the last word directed towards me that left her mouth.
We pretty much ate in silence because I knew if I said anything right now it would just come off as hateful, but that's not what I'm feeling. It's really the opposite but for some reason every time I open my mouth my words come out negatively, like I can't stop myself from saying them, as if it's holding a weight on my tongue.
The only interactions between us were her hitting my foot to get me to look up at the TV to see a good play in a game and then we would go back to our food.
"Can I get y'all deserts or will that be all for tonight?" our server asked politely bringing us out of the silence we were so comfortably sitting in.
"That'll be it, just the checks whenever!" I smiled at her, which she smiled back to and removed our plates from the table. It wasn't long before she was back with two pieces of paper for the both us, though on Kate's there was scribbles in black ink. My eyes wandered over to get a better view, and that's when I saw the girls phone number written out with a small heart beside it.
The same feelings of my body flashing with heat for a quick moment returned. I wasn't mad at Kate, I can't control that she's an attractive person with a good personality, of course she's going to get hit on by random strangers.
But I just pushed those feelings down as I pulled out my phone to scan the little barcode to pay for the meal. Once I was done Kate looked over at me with that smile that was so her, "Ready?" she asked, which I nodded as answer before we both got up, but I could see her tuck the little slip of paper into her jacket as we left.
As we walked out I felt her hand lay on my back as the guided me through the busy restaurant full of college students. Her hand left my back as soon as we were in the fresh air walking to our cars parked beside each other, but instead of her going to her own she walked up to mine. "Indi...I can't help you if you don't tell me what's wrong" Kate spoke with her voice laced in sincerity looking down at me, I rarely ever felt this little.
"Everything is good, I promise you" I smiled softly looking up at her, which she just nodded in response. She then wrapped her arms around my lower waist as the pulled me into a hug and my arms found their way around her neck. I could feel my heart beating out of my chest and I only hope she couldn't feel it.
I quickly backed away tucking my hair behind both my ears nervously, "Ok well goodnight" my words were sharp and fast as I dashed into my car, but I could still see her confused expression as I hit the start button.
Why do I always end up liking her?
