chapter eleven, traitor

Things haven't been the same since the Olympic coven left Forks Washington. Rosalie and Emmett went on a vacation (practically another honeymoon), Alice and Jasper were researching about her past. Even since it was discovered that Alice was one of James victims, she's been very curious to learn more about her forgotten human life.

Carlisle and Esme went to Esme Island, also on a vacation. So Persephone decided to join her cousins in Alaska, instead of sticking with anyone. She didn't exactly live with them, instead in the home next to them. But she often spent time with Tanya and Kate, just hanging out as each day passed.

She'd been checking up on Edward every once in a while but he was getting worse each time. Which was awful since no one was able to cheer him up. He hasn't even changed clothes, he still wears the ripped-up clothes from the break up. Steph's family isn't able to sleep which makes Edward's situation worse since each day goes by very slowly.

Things have been strange in Alaska. The girls were all welcoming however it was weird having Laurent around. Persephone and Edward never trusted him, but he was Irina's mate nothing could be done. But after what happened with James and the fact that Victoria is still alive out there. It made things very awkward but she made it work.

Leaving Forks was harder than she thought, Steph enjoyed the weather and area. High school wasn't so bad now that she made friends with Angela and Eric. She missed them a bit. Knowing she'll probably never see them again was unsettling. Maybe she'll meet their future great-great-great-grandchild.

Leaving Forks also meant she couldn't casually run into Sam, the mystery guy who made an impact on the blonde. Steph still had his jacket in her car, she couldn't bear to take it out. Just kept it as a reminder.

Persephone wanted to take her brother's pain away but knew she couldn't. But the dark thoughts lingered in her mind, Edward couldn't live without Bella. And that would mean, Edward couldn't be by her side forever anymore.

Bella had been sending emails to Steph and it was quite obvious how much she was struggling. Steph never replied knowing it was what Edward wanted. But it was getting harder and Bella wasn't getting much better.

She has been spending more time with Jacob Black and that seems to help her but it's only temporary.

The blonde half-vampire was at an art show, trying to focus on the art and not her life. Since the day had started off strange, Laurent had been very persistent and invasive about her plans that morning. As if wanting to make sure she had plans? His reaction was weird when he found out she had a art gallery to attend. Which only made the blonde more suspicious of him.

Persephone had accepted a glass of champagne when she got an upcoming call from Alice.

"Hi, Alice-" the blue-eyed vampire was cut off by a worried and yelling Alice.

"Steph! You have to go to Forks now! Laurent is going to try to kill Bella!" Persephone's eyes widened and she looked around to find the other humans distracted so she immediately started to walk outside avoiding everyone who tried to stop her. (Like the employee, saying something about her jacket)

"Where Alice?!" Steph yelled, looking down at her outfit annoyed. The girl was at a fancy art gallery so she had worn an awful outfit to run through the snow. Hopefully her heels wouldn't slow her down since she didn't have time to change.

"At their meadow. It's going to happen soon!" That was all Alice needed to say for Steph to understand. The blonde immediately hung up and started to run. Hoping and praying she made it on time.

As Steph ran, she kept thinking about Edward. Does he know? Will she have to kill Laurent on her own? Was that even possible? After all, she was only half? That and Laurent was a lot more older and experienced compared to her.

The negative thoughts left her mind as Steph made it to forks, she ran and was getting closer.

Everything clicked into place, that's why Laurent had been so invested about her day. He wanted to kill Bella but why? The Cullen's didn't do anything to him instead Carlisle helped him.

"You tried to help us." Steph heard Bella say nervously and that made her run faster.

"I went to visit the Cullens, but their house is empty. I'm surprised they left you behind. Especially since Persephone claimed she was the only one on vacation. Weren't you sort of a pet of theirs?"

Bella's smile falters, and fear begins to dawn on her. "Um...something like that."

"Do the Cullens visit often?" Laurent asks walking closer to the human. Bella quickly noticed his red eyes and suddenly felt her throat dry. Both the human and vampire felt a flash of air and a familiar voice.

"Of course, you didn't think we'd leave Bella unprotected did you?" A voice surprised both Bella and Laurent. Bella looked at her in relief and wanted nothing more than to hug the blonde and not let go. But clearly now wasn't the right time.

Laurent clenches his jaw, suddenly feeling nervous. He knew about her compulsion gift. "Persephone, I didn't think you were coming to Forks today."

Steph took her place next to Bella and wrapped her arm around her, "Why should I tell you what I do Laurent? Are you suddenly my father? What I do is none of your business."

Laurent glared at the girl, knowing he couldn't just kill her and get away with him. The others would find out and seek revenge.

"Why are you here Laurent," Steph asked taking a step forward, placing Bella safely behind her. "And with red eyes, Irina will be very disappointed."

The red-eyed vampire continues to glare, "Tell me Persephone, Do you ever feel compelled to...cheat? Cheat this lifestyle."

"No, I don't, I don't want to be a monster," Steph says pushing Bella back a bit. Ready to fight if needed.

After the incident with James, Jasper thought it would benefit her to learn self-defense, just in case anything ever happened. Turns out those lessons weren't so stupid after all.

Bella involuntarily takes a step away from him, her hand still holding Steph's.

"That doesn't matter because that's not why I left. I came back here as a favor to Victoria." Steph's eyes widen at his words. I knew it, son of a bitch.

"You're still friends with her?" Bella asked but Steph ignored her.

Laurent shrugs as if it wasn't a big deal, "More or less. She asked me to get the lay of the land of the Cullens house because, well... I'm afraid Victoria is quite put out with you."

"That's...too bad," Bella says making Laurent keep his eyes on her. He knew what would happen if he met Persephone's blue eyes.

"Yes. She feels it's only fair to kill Edward's mate, given he killed hers. Eye for an eye, mate for a mate."

That was the final straw for Persephone, she took a step forward. "You're such a traitor! After everything Carlisle did for you, Edward was right we should have killed you when we had the chance."

"Edward will know who did it. He'll come after both of you." Bella says trying to help the blonde scare him away.

"I don't think he will. After all, how much could you mean to him if he left you here unprotected?" He looks at Steph with a mocking look, "Victoria sent me here for information. She won't be happy about my killing you both."

"No, Laurent...keep Steph out of this" Bella defended her friend, Steph wanted to smile at that. None of them said goodbye to the human and here she was, defending her.

Laurent looked at the human sincerely, "No, no, no. Don't be upset. I'm doing you both a kindness. Victoria plans on killing both of you slowly, painfully whereas I'll make it very quick." He inhaled, "And you smell so...mouth-watering." Then he looked at Steph, "and I want to test a theory, I wonder since you're half vampire, if I bite down will I taste anything?"

He faces her, taking in her scent, bloodlust building. Bella's eyes dart around, escape is impossible so the human closes her eyes and whispers, "Edward. I love you."

"No, I won't let you hurt her. You'll have to kill me first." Persephone says her tone trying to stay steady and not show her fear.

Laurent smirked, "That can be arranged."

He leans closer and is about to grab her when Steph punches him in the face hard.

However, it didn't seem to affect the vampire too much but then abruptly, his expression changed. He sees something in the forest and it terrifies him. "I...don't believe it,"

Persephone didn't have to turn around to know what it was or who they were. The wolves had found them.

He steps back and pushes Persephone forward hard causing her to fall on the floor as a distraction to the wolves.

"You asshole!" The blue-eyed yelled but was also worried. Would they recognize her? Or will she also be ripped apart?

None of the Cullen's except Carlisle had met Sam and maybe the others. They wouldn't recognize her, and Carlisle never told them about her being a half vampire. So how she smelled to them was unknown.

Bella is extremely confused as she realizes he's no
longer focused on them. She followed his eyes, slowly
turning to find a huge black wolf skulking out of the darkness of the woods.

It stalks towards them, a low disturbing growl in its throat, sharp teeth gleaming. "Steph! Are you okay?" Bella yelled, helping the blonde girl up, and started pulling her back.

The wolf comes closer to them, a mere twenty feet from where they stand, and then four more wolves emerge from the trees coming behind the black wolf.

They're the size of small horses, all of the different colors: dark silver, chocolate, ash, and russet brown. Their hackles are up, lips curling, bodies crouched, ready to spring.                                                  

Persephone pulls Bella behind her and Laurent grabs the half vampire harshly. "Did you know!"

He shook her body hard, as if upset with her even if it should be the other way around. If they both die, it would be all his fault for being stupid.

Persephone couldn't help but remind him, "Let go of me!" She snaps pushing him away, "You're a traitor, if we both die it's all your fault!"

Bella was frozen with fear as they came toward the two vampires. Persephone looked back and saw the black wolf getting close to her. Almost as if eyeing her cautiously.

She gulped and raised her hands up, trying to show, she meant no harm. Their eyes met and they both felt everything stop. Steph instantly felt a familiarity in his eyes. Practically as if she had seen them before.

However, there was another feeling. A feeling of comfort and warmth. But also safety? Which was strange when being stuck in a difficult situation.

It seems like the wolf was also stunned for a moment because he stared at her with widened eyes. Persephone tore her eyes away from the wolf and looked at Laurent who was still eyeing her cautiously.

She then looked behind the black wolf and found the other four looking only at Laurent.

But he continues to retreat, slowly, as if trying to fool them. Then suddenly, almost simultaneously Laurent bolts across the meadow trying to get away.                             
The wolves spring into action, but to Persephone's shock. They completely ignored her and went straight for Laurent.

Steph could feel their excitement as they all chased Laurent. And turned around to see a brown one look at Bella before it turned his gaze on her. This brown wolf nodded his head towards the woods almost as it trying to say, get out of here.

And Steph did not need to be told twice. She grabbed Bella's arms and followed after the human running at Bella's speed. From far away, Steph could hear Laurent's screams and knew that he wasn't going to be a...problem anymore.

WOLVES POV (point of view):

The wolves almost immediately smelled and sensed Laurent as they got closer. They rushed over but stopped at Sam's command. 

The wolves hide and watch the interaction consciously, seeing Isabella Swan once again in the middle of trouble. Expect this time she brought a friend.

"Who's the blonde?" Embry Call asks as they all watch Bella and the red-eye cold one.

"Not sure but she's definitely not from around her, I mean look at her," Paul answers back, though their mind link.

Sam tore his eyes off the vampire and looked at the blonde who spoke up.

"No, I won't let you hurt her. You'll have to kill me first." The small blonde yelled.

"That can be arranged." They watched as he leaned closer and was about to grab her when the blonde punched him in the face.

"Ow, that looks like it hurt," Jared adds, fascinated by the strength she showed.

"She can't be human, did you notice how hard she punched him," Jacob says his eyes following her every move.

Sam shook off their words and took a step forward, finally making himself known.

"I...don't believe it," The red-eyed vampire stepped back and pushed the blonde forward hard causing her to fall on the floor as a distraction to the wolves.

"You asshole!" The blue-eyed yelled causing the wolves to finally see her face.

"Persephone," both Sam and Jacob ask unsure. They both looked at each other stocked. It had been a while since Sam saw her, months ago.

"How do you know her?" Sam immediately asked, a bit agitated causing Jacob to blink for a moment stunned before he answered.

"Bella's friend, met her once....is she a Cullen?" Jacob asks unsure.

"No she can't be, I've met her and she has blue eyes and I've seen her blush," the interaction came up before Sam could stop it. This mind link was a pain sometimes.

"Oh, blush?" Paul says in a playful tone before it turns into disgust, "Wait, that blonde may be a Cullen. She's a leech."

Sam growls at him softly, before turning back to the scene in from of him.

The wolves now placed a name on the blonde, so they watched Persephone pull Bella behind her and the red-eyed one grabbed her harshly, "Did you know!"

"Let go of me!" She snaps pushing him away, "You're a traitor, if we both die it's all your fault!"

"Don't touch her until we know exactly what she is," Sam orders, wanting them to stay away. Anger filled him as he sees the vampire push her, Sam had so many questions but knew it wasn't the right time.

Sam steps forward, getting closer to Persephone, eyeing her cautiously. But she raised her hands up, trying to show, she meant no harm.

Sam met her eyes and felt his entire body freeze, at that moment everything changed. Sam always thought she was beautiful but now..now it was more. In his mind, she was the prettiest girl he's ever seen. He's ever going to see. A warm feeling hit him, all that mattered was her. Sam didn't hear the annoyed comments coming from Paul or the surprised looks from Jared and Embry or even the angry look from Jacob.

The alpha saw a future with her, holding hands by the beach, hugging her...kissing her.

Sam was staring at her with adoration in his eyes, he couldn't stop himself from memorizing every detail of her face, he took in her beautiful blue eyes, and pink soft lips but everything snapped in place again when he saw the fear on her face.

"This has to be a fucking joke, right?" Paul asked both annoyed and harshly through their link, "She's a Cullen, probably a leech in disguise. We should be ripping her into pieces not protecting her-"

Paul wasn't able to finish because Sam immediately growled at him in a threatening manner. "Stay away from her or else I'll rip you apart."

"Got it, no touching the possible leech girlfriend," Paul says nervously, not wanting to get on Sam's bad side.

At that moment they all ran toward the red-eyed vampire in full force and ready to tear him apart. However, once it was over Sam was disappointed Steph had left with Bella, hoping to see again soon.

"The ancestors have to be pulling a joke right? I mean a wolf and a vampire together romantically, huge disaster." Embry joked trying to lighten up the tension but Jared suddenly remembered something very important.

"Aren't we all forgetting something?" Jared reminded nervously, "Sam, you're technically still engaged with Leah."

The wolves didn't mumble a single word because Jared's words were true. Sam was still an engaged man and a soon-to-be-dead man because Leah was going to kill him.
