18: Swamp
"So... what possessed the great Tahno to bring back our gal to the Swamp?" Your parents greeted you warmly. "Passin' her along?"
"Absolutely not." Tahno scowled. "Isn't the swamp past that yet?"
"'Sides, if Tahno done wanted to share me, he wouldn't've stole me away!" You put your arms on your hips. Tahno could only smirk at your sass.
"I'm simply a person with a lot of free time now. And I care about YN gettin' happy."
"She ain't happy!?" Your father turned and looked at you. "I got a right lotta men lookin' for--"
"Since when do ya care who I'm seein'?!" You scowled at your dad further. "Like you ain't got six other kids!"
"Eight now, I'd reckon." He laughed and rubbed the back of his head. Tahno was happy his parents hadn't reproduced like most Swamp people did. It was hard enough to deal with his sister-- and she was nice. He laughed at your scowling face and pulled you close. It was funny to think that you hadn't actually fit that well into the swamp culture-- that was just a testament to how completely opposite he was from that.
"I care who you're seein'." Tahno kissed the top of your head. "I gotta admit, I did bring ya back for a reason..."
"TAHNO!" Shaozu shouted and he and Ming mucked through the swamp, finally arriving. "WHY would you leave us behind?! We have never experienced such..."
"Muck." Ming finished his sentence.
"Such muck! Ugh! Terrible! And the bugs..." Shaozu complained as you laughed a bit. It was funny seeing these city folks in the swamp. But it was even better to see Tahno talking to your parents. Slowly and surely, he was returning to his true self. Before Amon had taken his bending. Before he became a pro-bender. Before he hated the swamp. He was starting to be able to accept that he would have to live on regardless of his bending abilities and repair the relationships that he did have.
Tahno knew he had you to thank for that. It was not a surprise to him that you provided warm sentiments and gestures whenever he truly needed them; that was why you were his very first and truest friend. He loved everything about you and had every reason to. You and you alone were the reason that he had recently been motivated to get better-- not for his own sake, but yours. Angst and despair had swirled around him in a deadly aura for years, yet you never left. He would have; certainly being screamed at and getting things thrown at him would have made him reconsider.
And that was how you had all ended up here. He wanted to repay you for always being there for him; for being a friends when he didn't know how to even be kind. And that was why he wanted to marry you. Here, in the swamp.
